Great video Kit. My jigging knowledge is basic, so I especially found the first half of your video very educational and well explained. I will pass it on to my fishing mates (beginners to very experienced) over here in Okinawa as I think we can all learn from your comments. All the best.
Hi i m from malaysia, nice of full information in this video, both of them is the great slow jig fishing reel but the big different between shimano and SOM is the price, not all malaysian can buy SOM for their slow jig reel. But most malaysian angler want this SOM reel. Now i using Shimano F-custom, its suitable for selat melaka ocean.
the F custom is not cheap either - if you can save for an F custom, it won't be a stretch to save for an SOM as well. The point of the video was not to compare reels, it is to show choices - end of the day, it is up to the person...if you want more of everything, then you can get SOM, otherwise, ordinary OJs or F customs can do the job extremely well already.
I do understand the dilemma. The price gap between oj and som is quite huge, i don't have any knowledge about other countries, but in malaysia it is quite a big margin. A used Oj f price range is between rm1600 to rm2000, which i believe it's around 350 to 430 usd, while som blue heaven price can soar as far as rm6600, correct me if i'm wrong but i guess it is around usd1400. Phew. I can buy 3 brand new oj f, it's crazy. Btw, nice video Ps : i had already tried oj f custom recently, i hope one day i can stand a chance to grasp the ultimate feeling of the fable som, perhaps......if i'm motivated enough
spool lock? yes, and the automatic engage both matters actually. The point is, if you don't have access to OJs, the Trini 16A/16NA are both good reels you can use, just a handle change would do it. Especially if you already have the reel and want to get into Slow Jigging, if you happen to like Slow Jigging, then hey, you can go ahead and invest in an OJ.
My problem with Ocea jigger that I’m left hand user , I only can find left handed reels size 2001 HG/PG/ XHG But I can not find 4000 size for a better line capacity. I am thinking to buy Capcha 50 or 60HG for Tuna fishing
I'm sure Shimano has a very good reason why they don't have left handed 4000s. but yea, look at other brands and see where it gets you. I'm sure you will find a perfect fit after a few reels.
Great video TheFishingKit, thanks! I also have the SOM BH-L50, as well as Ocea Jigger 2000s and Accurate. Quick question, you mentioned you thought your L50 had about 13kg of drag. The cork drag washer models have 9kg~10kg, but the carbon drag models have 13kg. Do you have the carbon drag model, or did you maybe swap out your cork washers for CF? Thanks!
You can't really say the max drag of a lever drag reel is this coz they put put more but you lose freespool and it becomes harder to wind. When I measure my "max drag" it would be how much it can output on a full spool BEFORE I feel that slight bit of resistance when I put it on the MAX Lever Position. Since you will be measuring the drag according to the line you put in, you only have to deal with percentage of increase rather than actually computing what the max output of the reel is, for example, if you put in PE 1, your max drag would be different when you put in PE 5. That is on lever drags at least, different on Star Drags because they don't use a draw bar. Having said that - the guidelines the manufacturers use is so the reel is in optimum operating parameters - if you use what they state and not go over it, their engineering won't fail. The Z Japan has Carbon drags installed as stock. So the output will be stronger.
@@TheFishingKit , thanks for your reply. Actually my main question had to do with whether you had the carbon drag washers or not. In Japan, the SOM BH series has taken a lot of heat because of the cork drag system, which many have criticized because of the drag locking up. The earlier models were very succeptible to the cork washers getting wet and expanding, causing the drag to surge, then lock up, causing line breaks or even rods getting yanked out of peoples' hands and into the ocean if they were on a very big fish with heavy line. The newer models now have the semi-waterproof cap so they are much less succeptible to the cork getting wet. Nonetheless, there are many opting for the carbon drag models, or even swapping out the cork washers for CF. I'm in the process of that myself. The CF drags on my Ocea Jiggers and Accurate BF are much smoother than the cork drag on my BH, which I feel like it tends to "surge". Got CF drag washers on order now. I'm going to guess your Z-Japan also has the stainless/alu drag plate? I'm not sure if I want to shell out the high cost for that yet. We'll see how just the CF washer change works out. Thanks for your expertise!!
@@ralphjustiniano2961 The Z models are already upgraded with the plate, waterproof cap etc. so carbon came as stock. The other L50 I have has cork washers. I actually like cork drags because of the low startup inertia and smoother drag it puts out. You have to put a bit of oil (not ordinary oil) on the cork washers. I don't plan to swap out the cork washer on my other reel any time soon. Carbon Fiber is much more durable though. You have to maintain cork and more importantly, know how to maintain it. I am already used to cork washers because some of my fly reels have cork drags.
@@Francisco-zm9oc there is a reason why it weighs that way I am sure. Shimano is one of the standards...so it is safe to say that that weight is "normal" sort of.
@@lifeoverdrive for me, I got the reel for a purpose, so quite justified. I needed the extra capacity and the weight to size difference with other options. So, for what I am using it for?...Totally. The price is the greatest drawback, but since I have this, I don't even look or think about other options because it's exactly what I need.
@@lifeoverdrive well, the biggest thing is the weight reduction. the one I have is already very light (Z Japan model) the s2t is lighter still. For me, I like this better. But if you are upgrading from say an OJ, then I'd go straight to the s2t. I chose the Z japan because the was no s2t available that time.
Nice Video, Could you post links to where you would recommend buying the Studio Ocean Mark and handle please? Also what would be your ideal rod to go with it?
I buy mine locally here in Dubai. Unfortunately, I don't know where to get them online. As for the rods, the truth of it is - it depends on your style and budget, so if you want to go top end, there are rod brands like deepliner, poseidon and beat that suit these reels - but again, when you buy a rod, it really depends on what your style and preference are. I use a Hots Stiletto with my L50.
If I'm going to spend $1,000 I'm going with an international 130 or avet trx130.. I need to get rich and get all the gear I really want. I was robbed for all my gear, I'm starting over and it feels like I'll never have everything I had before.

Thanks for the Video Kit, can you tell me the exact model and name for the handle you have on the Trinidad?
Studio Ocean Mark Handle HN AE100/A11098 (L) S this is the one i have in all the reels ive swapped the handles of. :)
i wish i have any of the 3 :) nice one kit!
You save for them Ford. :)
great video do you use maxel rage reels
No, I don't have Maxel reels. I have tried them though, they are quite good.
Very informative and great advice Kit! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.... damn sexy reel too! 😍😍😍
Always a pleasure bro. :)
I just bought an f custom. I would have gotten a trinidad if they offered lefty models
The F custom is a better reel than the Trini in terms of build, only downside is the narrow spool.
They are showing up in the US, but I’m
unsure if they could be serviced here.
That is one thing to consider, but these reels are so easy to take apart. buying parts from Japan is easy too. :)

ok for fast jigging. too heavy for slow jigging. kind of old tech but they can be used.@@johnlee6216

Yes I have, I like the FG and PR better.
Any thought on the marfix reel? Thanks!
I have only held them but haven't had a chance to use them, so until I have some usage on them, I can't really say anything.
Does the blue heave have that drag clicker sound when the fish is pulling like ocea jigger?
No It doesn't have the clicker sound - you don't want that there in the first place.
@@TheFishingKit nah, thats boring

Right on
How abt the seals on the SOM and trinidad 16A? Is it good for offshore use as well??
SOM has semi waterproof drags. Trinidad has the old style sealing.
SOM has a higher quality build than OJ, period.
