@@brandonkelusky2493 that's the problem with major events like this when it comes to major historical events especially world changing events such as WW2 we always know about a lot of the main players even maybe mid level people and maybe third tier but interesting life stories like lord haw haw always fall between the cracks and it's a real shame because even minor people like this leave a mark on history and in my opinion some can be just as wild and interesting as a major event like mad Jack Churchill or even someone who is relatively well known such Arthur Harris but doesn't get talked about as much as others from his era

In Norse Sagas, Athelstan (or Æthelstan) is best known for being the foster parent of Norway’s first Christian King, Håkon the Good/«Adalsteinfostre»(«fostered/raised by Æthelstan»! While the Sagas tell that Athelstan was tricked into fostering Håkon (typically something done by subjects) as payback from Håkon’s father, Harald Hårfagre/«Finehair» (the first King of a United Norway), for a similar ploy for dominance from Athelstan, he is remembered for aiding his foster son Håkon to the Norwegian throne as «Æthelstan the Good»!
Great video, but there's a problem. Every time there's a letter "s" or "c" you're whistling. It's very noticeable around 6:10. You may want to check your sound levels.
They have a preset they use for my audio, but I think some of the juniors get carried away messing with the levels. One of my friends does the audiobook recordings for my publisher, so I'm gonna consult with him about it. Jen and her team are not audio experts.
Would also like to see one on michael Collins and other irish leaders during the irish war of independence and i would love to hear other ideas on who they want to see
First Alfred and Edward the elder and im a have been wanting this one for a while since he have all the the kings who eventually built a united kingdom of England maybe Richard of Bordeaux next or maybe Louis xi he's nicknamed the universal spider and the cunning for a reason would love this one
Most of the information covered here is unlikely to be religious propaganda. It’s easy for a monk writing about a recent king to, say, be harsh or generous to him in his take, depending on his opinion of the king’s piety or how generous he was to the church, but most historians don’t think that the broad outline of figures like Aethelstan is likely to be fiction - if nothing else, there is little point in lying about something so grossly that your readers know it to be untrue. It’s good to be critical readers of our source material, but while bias is the norm when it comes to medieval chronicles, most of them aren’t regarded as outright fictions. Religious propaganda is along the lines of “Cnut attempted to command the sea and, failing to due so, responded with humble piety”, not “a major battle or set of laws are inventions fabricated out of whole cloth.”
@VersteheNZI can see that but to throw another name in, Henry V? It's noted amongst chronicles of the time even the French deemed him a pious king and praised him, take away all the Shakespeare stuff, I've heard via Empire Podcast he was a most pious king.
My favorites early King of the English is Edgar. He decreed that no work shall be done from sundown on Friday to dawn on Monday. Thus, he created the weekend.
Great video sir, Athelstan's name translates as "Noble Stone" and I think this is apt, I don't think he was far behind his grandfather Alfred the Great, especially after Brunanburh.
Out of all the Anglo-Saxon kings of Old, Athelston is my favourite because he united the country except for Cumbria and he is my third favourite King of England only behind Henry the 8th and my all time favourite monarch of England Richard I the Lion Heart or Richard coeur de lion in French
Ehhhh... at what point did he conquor the whole of Britain???? He got a 7 years peace with Scotland I think. Does that class as conquering somewhere? Didnt he just make peace with Wales too?
Few times in England’s history do we have a great king and a great son, but to have a cheeky trilogy like this. No wonder those 3 brought the kingdom to what it is today
Really disappointed in this channel these days. This moves way too fast and all of the “humor” interjected throughout prevents me from taking the speaker or the subject matter seriously.
You should cover william joyce lord haw-haw.
That would be interesting.
Believe it or not prior to your comment I actually had no idea who that was but now that I do and I agree that would be a great video

Excellent video. Thank you.
Interesting video
Hell yeah thank you Eric
You bet
It's a shame that England's ancient history documents were destroyed by the Roman Catholic church at the slaughter of Bangor in 600AD
Makes me wonder why they were destroyed...
He who conquers the past...
It’s also a shame to know that throughout history people are a bunch of scumbags and still doing it today!!
@@wrathfordSo… like it’s a conspiracy or something?

This isn't Simon's channel?
Never was. He was the host, not the owner
I hope you can also do a video on CNUT the great
England's most Pious King was Henry III. Can we expect a video of him?
@VersteheNZI can see that but to throw another name in, Henry V? It's noted amongst chronicles of the time even the French deemed him a pious king and praised him, take away all the Shakespeare stuff, I've heard via Empire Podcast he was a most pious king.
Can you do the rolling stones bio
My favorites early King of the English is Edgar. He decreed that no work shall be done from sundown on Friday to dawn on Monday. Thus, he created the weekend.
Glau-kester 😂
I assume Gloucester, and not some brand new city of Glow-Caster?
Eric has a cool last name 💪
Thank you!
What's up with Mad Man ?
Just ignore that final "h".
Let's go! Finally a video about my boy Athelstan, who deserves a lot more recognition than he gets.
I miss Simon 😢.
I would also eventually like to see one on cnut the great edward ii henry Bolingbroke or ethelred the unready and edwin the first and Benito Juarez
I love the British history segments
Using maps can help understand where these events took place and where other threats or further conquests are as well

What about video of Edmund the first
Edmund the Elder? The channel did him a year or two ago - I think he was one of the last figures Simon covered?
@@JackHankeAnd someone else is called Edmund the first and it is on Wikipedia
@@Hamzakhan-dt3gv you're right, and it was even covered in the video, I just blanked on this fact as I was writing my comment! My bad. :P

Jesus pal... 😂
Where's Simon?
Should have been Ughtred, son of Ughtred. Real history be damned, DESTINY IS ALL!
2.4m subscribers but only 17k views after 3 days?

Your intro is completely wrong! You confused England, which Athelstan ruled, is not the whole of Britain, Buy a map!
That hair is SUPER dark, and, with the widow’s peak, looks to be in the style of Eddie Munster…
Last kingdom pretty much does a great job at looking at time period along with the kings of Wessex.
In the end the Vikings win, just had to play the waiting game!
Dude. Unbutton that top button on your shirt!

he has doubts about his Christianity...

Legend has it that Edward’s first wife was named Equine because her parents thought her face looked like a horse, hence the moniker “horse face”.
