Greetings fellow city planners, I'm finally here with my Let's Play Series. I wasn't actually going to start this until the weekend, but I stayed up late working on Episode 1 last night since there's just been soo much support for this already!
I'm in this for the long haul, so expect many many episodes. I'm really hoping that we can unlock everything and eventually fill up all 9 city tiles. Along the way I want to try and keep a focus on traffic, transportation and just overall aesthetics. So if this is up your alley, stick around!
Feel free as always to make suggestions, I usually film an episode or 2 ahead just so I don't run out of content, so it might maybe take me a few days to implement it :)

Oh my. I decided to rewatch this series after having watched the latest Lakewood video from about a month ago, and it's amazing to see the start if this again now that it's a such a huge city. Especially your excitement at the possibilities of getting all the way out to those smaller island. Ah, I've missed Lakewood.
+Madame Traffic Jam it's crazy to think about how far things have come along since this episode was released. Not just with the city, but with the channel in general.
It's been quite the journey!
I definitely need to get the whole mod situation sorted out and get back into making more episodes for Lakewood. I miss this place!

Just discovered your series and starting to follow this build from the beginning. It is great to find someone intelligent and articulate who can communicate at a level that does not include profanity in every sentence or who thinks they are some hilarious wacky "dude". I don't understand how you're so relaxed when you play this game. I get so frustrated on how I want to build my city in the beginning and I want it to look perfect.
Maybe do something pleasing, like squishing a rubber duck :P

I recommend placing a one way road from your residential area to your industrial area so that the morning commutes don't interfere with the truck traffic.

This was an very fun and useful video for me! Especially after the road tips video!
Going to check out more of the series. I was completely convinced that the AI was bugged for Schools and Healthcare. Yours seems to be panned out maybe I was just expanding/building too quickly with dense residential zoning. Helped a bit with road ideas as well I can't stand grids yet didn't realize one ways were so helpful.

This looks better than SimCity. I've been a fan of the SimCity series but wasn't very happy with the last one and got bored pretty fast. I'm tempted to buy Skylines after watching a few videos :)

Just be prepared to shut yourself off from the world for the first week of playing, you'll be so consumed!! In a good way :)

I'm hoping to use them to make little mini series for common problems, and then just focus on the Let's Play for progression. Mirko T Yea I think I'll be moving the cargo station a little bit further out on it's own, just to help with traffic. And I wish I was graduating, but it's just a summer break, I still have a few more years to go, but it's going to be nice to have some time off. Your English isn't bad, no problem understanding you at all :)

discovered your channel yesterday because of your 'How to Grow& Manage a Small City' series and with this you earned a Sub and another like ;) keep going
and a question... are you going to upload this every day or once a week or in different intervals?
der comtor the eventual goal is to be doing daily uploads, but I'm just trying to juggle quite a few things right now, so for the moment probably 2-3 a week. BUT, my classes will be done for the summer in about a months time, so I'll have plenty of more time soon to make content :)
I had to subscribe, no way of letting this series go away, even if it will take long to follow.

I am working on some newer series currently for the game as this one is missing some DLC and upgrades - still a lot of fun though!
You're the Bob Ross of Skylines. Just another happy little bridge... ;) A good name for a city with King in it, Kings Town, or as it is more commonly named "Kingston" (where I live). There's actually quite a few cities in Canada and the United States named Kingston. ;)
***** my uncle lives in Kingston, we seem to be crazy about names that have a regal sound to them here in Canada. Not that I have a problem with that or anything, I think it's actually pretty neat that we sorta have a monarchy.

Yup, I like our monarchy and am quite proud of our history and the fact that we never rebelled. :)
I currently have a city with 32k+ people, 90% happiness all around, and a good mix of farming and forestry so low pollution, but I might just start over because traffic is kind of congested in some areas and I actually kind of like the feeling of starting a small town compared to maintaining a large city.

If you're still running into money issues, you can always adjust the slider bars for some of your services, and then when it's available, don't forget to bump up your tax rate!

So I was following your first series with the Great Plains map ... The one you lost when switching hard drives or something --- well I had finished the series and was starting to build on my own I was just starting my downtown section and then my saved file was corrupted .... And I only had one save (yea I know stupid). But now gonna follow this one!
There's a town in Ohio called "Kings Mills". So the local municipalities are referred to as Kings, e.g. Kings High School, Kings Fire Dpt. etc. But, there's a theme park there called Kings Island, and seeing as this is the Islands map...
I dunno where I'm going with that. But it's food for thought! Also, calling the city just "Kings" would be cool, because then when anyone refers to it, it's "The City of Kings".
Kevin Macku yea we've got a King City just north of us. Always thought it was a cool name for a place. I think I'll name one of the high density areas the Kings, has a nice ring to it!

You're like the third person I'm watching for this game's LP. It's so interesting watching different people's vision of their own city, but you all share one thing in common. It's the whole grid-like street. lol No one likes it. I find that interesting.
+crimson2knight I think where each RUclipsr lives has a bit to play, I find that since I live over in North America I can't help but build cities and layouts that feel familiar to me. I do try to mix things up a bit though :)
I do honestly love the little differences between everybody though. Always nice to see someone be creative and have fun at the same time :)
Btw if i may complain just a little bit, i noticed since i use headphones, that your mic makes a little bit of a backround noise. Anyway awsome vid as always! Big thumbs up

In my personal opinion, I think the 4 lane roads are a bit excessive for just starting out. I recommend upgrading later on if the need arises. You could've saved a couple 1000 dollars by building the roads smaller.

epicman786 this game is surprisingly quite demanding on the system. It's also soo much fun :)
epicman786 I want to suggest to you SimCity 4. Great game with a lot of land to work on, and no DRM like most games coming out today. Though, roads are limited to 8 directions and they can't pass over each other like Cities Skylines.

Hey, Great videos and I'm pretty much hooked after the first video!
I want to ask you a question, what city service would you go for first and why? I think Fire Station, then police then education. However no matter which building I place I end up with either to many criminals, overload of ill people or constant fires. I find it difficult to manage all three without getting into debt. Please Help!
i really like your tutorial gameplay........and I'm getting ready to do my city exactly like yours........because I hate spending tons of time trying to figure out just how to plan ahead.......I really hate building a beautiful city only to have to tear down most of it because the streets are all fucked up with traffic and shit.

tried to build 5 cities already, they all failed, i can't spend less and make more money, just can't i'm so bad at this.
+PandaGamer Zone START OUT SMALL! SMALL SMALL SMALL! The way I do it (I'm not great at all) is I pretty much don't even think about making a city, I start by thinking 'what would this small village/town look like' and I just keep it small, only expanding to follow demand, only spending to keep up whatever the city urgently needs, and make sure you keep an eye on your budgets! how much water you're actually using for a small town might be a lot less than you're pumping, so put the budget down for that etc. I hope this helps a little, sorry if it doesn't, it's 6:AM here! :P
a good strategy is to build slowly and only when they demand. also manage good traffic flow that's extremely important. it just takes practice I was kind of bad at first too. RUclips is a great tool hope this helped a little bit.
TheNastyBAGL i already did a big city, but the game is boring, and it doesn't have a lot to do on cities so i gave up
Maybe its not your cup of tea but what I like doing in this game is traffic management imo its most fun. disabling vehicle despawning. managing airports, buses, trams, trains and boats is also alot fun. and try create interesting cities rather than grids .

SilentGames Aww shucks!! Thanks! I actually am not going to be using any mods for this series, it's going to stay vanilla. BUT I will definitely be doing a modded series later on down the road. I'm not opposed to introducing mods later on though, especially if there's one that would be really really helpful if we're in a bind, but I think we'll just play it by ear.

TOvlogs I think selfmade parking lots are very usefull, cuz you can put it beside your mainroads where u dont want to build and with some entertainment accumulation you dont need to build parks at your industrial zone, although too much would be kinda cheating. ...I wish you will tell us some more about the subway, even though i have built some, but i think its still not ideal. ...i hope my english is okay ^^ edit: i chose the same map btw :P it'll looks great, when all the small islands will be full of buildings =)
Tim Cartel good call! Those I might have to look into.. Seems weird that they aren't in the game. I'll try to remember to go a bit more in depth about subways when I eventually place them in the LP series :)
TOvlogs Tim Cartel - Someone recently released a 3-level parking garage that has 64 parking spots... probably one of the greatest assets you can add into the game for you busy cities!! Check it out!

This reminds me of TheoTown, where you build your own pipes, power lines, and Ect. It's very close and accurate though, but TheoTown is in 8 Bit, and doesn't have the same mechanics as City Skylines. still fun.

Niklas Beick I'll be rebuilding certain areas to accommodate higher traffic volumes when the city gets larger. I find that this layout generally gets me to 40K people without too many traffic headaches. But I kinda wanna tackle that stuff together :)

2:02 That 3 road intersection will cause lots of traffic buildup. Especially considering the fact it's off of the highway.

In the future, would you consider building parks and connecting pedestrian paths with zones to create some green districts?

I like this playthrough a lot.
Have bought the game yesterday, and have been looking or good ideas on here.
I do want to share something I found out on another channel here - another youtuber also made a very long playthrough of the game, 40+ videos so far, and very early on he shared with all the viewers that there is a trick with water lines and their territory.
The trick, according to him is the same trick as you have in Sim City, and it basically means that if you put two parallel water lines that have a distance between them that equals to a short pipe that costs 440 credits, both of the pipes will touch with their territories but not overlap - perfect full coverage.
I'll include the link to the video where he actually shows this below...I got to say that while it might not be very cost effective, it's very liberating, at least for a noob like me, to know that I have perfect water coverage when I zone areas.

How did your buildings maintain power with only one power line tower connecting them?(btw love the vids)
Mack Jabroni the buildings will pass power onto the their neighbour, you just need to supply the power initially and keep a line or two to keep larger zones powered.

have you tried any of the workshop maps? there are some really cool ones. i think the vanilla maps are good for starting out with the game, and the costum maps are just a little but more fun.

bit stuck on landfills. If I place my landfill by my industrial it seems to be affecting my citizen's health even if it's far away from residential. How much should I be isolating landfills?
Joel Garman you can always build a service road that's a few hundred meters away from everything - it could have it's own highway access or just be on a long road away from everything. You can also relocate your power plants over to there as well, or just really anything that's a heavy polluter. Just keep an eye on service coverage and you might need a fire station close by just in case.

Only issue I am having with extensive one way street use is crime. Police cars will simply patrol some areas far less, which brings up the crime rate, especially in shop areas.
+Anders Kristensen Perhaps avoiding to zoning commercial and residential on one-ways might solve that problem. If not, one can never have too many rozzers...
