Will this work with a board, or does it have to be cylindrical, like a pipe? I needed to carry a 16' 2x6 I'm my Ford Ranger. I had to put one end overhanging my cab, the other hanging off the tailgate at an angle. I don't remember how I secured it, but I wondered afterward if a pipe hitch would have been better.
I don't think i would trust lifting pipes or poles to a clove hitch. It's a decent not when pulled straight from the center of the knot but when pulled at an angle it loses some of the security as it's not designed to be pulled from an angle or lift loads that are erected rather than laying flat. If that makes sense. Just thought i would mention that in case someone decides to do that.

Do a modified version but where you tie a constrictor knot instead of a clove hitch at the end
