YES! I landed on an Asuss2 this morning and an old brain cell fired "WHARF RAT!" - -and then there you were telling me everything I needed to know. Thanks!
Thanks for the video Clif ... Im in a band called Relatively Dead and we do Dead Different plus we do some original stuff too. We cover Wharf Rat and I will be implementing some of your tips here into my guitar parts when we do it! Great job here.
I learned this about 35 years ago but hadn't played it in forever. I was looking for a refresher on it and your playing it pretty much exactly how I learned it. Thanks for helping bring it back to life! ✌💀👍🧠🌌♾🎸🎼🎶🎵⚡
Hey now Cliff... I just want to send a compliment and thanks to you. Your a fine guitar player. I really enjoy your stuff. It's a staple in my guitar life, when I need to play/learn some GD. Thanks, please keep on truckin with your great teachings.
Well done Cliff. keep them coming. you've helped me limp through a lot of tunes that I just couldn't figure out on my own. And you seem to be playing perfectly with a bashed up finger on your fret hand. I try not to let anything slow me down either.
Just found your videos through the Wharf Rat lesson. Great job on a song I don't see too many lessons on! I really like the Dead's version of Hard To Handle too if you're looking for new suggestions.
It would be really cool for you to analyze how Jerry played the song and also how Weir played his part too. This particular lesson seems to be more of a mix between both guitar parts, but if you could separate the two parts that would be great too. Still good stuff either way. I gotta say it gets tiring trying to watch exactly how Jerry played songs from the videos that are out there and figuring it all out. It's definitely not impossible, but this type of video saves a ton of time for learning the songs. Thanks.
Good observation. For many songs (Terrapin, Casey, China, Brown Eyed, Playing, Friend OTD etc) I know both parts really distinctly but, I don't actually know Weirs part for Wharf Rat. Set from grateful guitar lessons showed me some of bob's inversions and the harmonics he would hit before the whammy, but I will have to explore further!
@@vedantus That's great. I also love trying to learn the distinct parts that they both used. I personally think Jerry and Bobby wrote some of the best dual guitar parts of any band out there. Jerry's parts complements Bobby's perfectly, and vice versa. Different rhythms, textures, note choices, chord voicings work together perfectly. However I'm the only guitarist in my band, so whenever we play Dead tunes I try to mix the two parts together in order to fill all of the sounds that need filling. A very worthwhile endeavour, I find. Learning and mastering Dead tunes on guitar has got to be one of my favorite things to do. I love getting deep in the nitty gritty to get everything nailed exactly as the band would play it, so your thoughts are much appreciated as well. I find the best way to explore this sort of thing is watching videos that show them both playing, so maybe you will find some stuff out there as well.

@@STSGuitar16 Great stuff! Liked the Bertha Lead, you have the touch! The Riders was really enjoyable and the jam did take fun turns. You had the quality of not rushing on to the next thing, but living in the moment that had arisen
Thanks for the lessons Clif. Wish you were in the neighborhood. Have you tried the new Elastomer Guitar Picks from Ibanez? Check them out , I really enjoy the 2.2 soft triangular shape might help to improve ones playing. They can be found on ebay as well as utube.
Great vid. Really like your stuff. I was looking for a easy song to start playing again. I had a bone transplant on my left thumb and bone removed from left wrist so now I'm trying to get it to bend again. Guitar is very good hand therapy when such extreme trama is aplenty. Haha What happened to you finger if you don't mind me asking. Your nail is black. That sucks when there black and blue under nail don't it. Thanks for posting your stuff.
Oh, I had it crushed by a sliding piece of furniture we were carrying, not too bad actually. Based on seeing it in videos though, I have been thinking of coloring my fingernails for future guitar instruction to make it easier to follow which finger is where! If you have a left hand injury, consider how you play. There are two styles of grip, the standard with the thumb on the back of the neck that requires a lot of wrist bend, and the garcia/townshend/richie havens style where you are gripping the neck with your thumb over the top, and it is way easier on the wrist...
Clif Edwards I hold it differently for different styles but its healing quit nicely. I've been over working it so I'm told. But soon no restrictions and I can do as I please. The mental memory is there but I have to train my hand again. (~);}
Haha, no effect, just a cheap amp (Peavey Blazer), a tiny one with its reverb turned up to 6. The smaller cheaper amps are more like what people were using in the sixties so it sometimes sounds authentic in a funny way.
+tktrips9 Ha, I don't own any effects!. Thats not true, I got the Mutron for christmas, but I control tone with toggle switch settings on the guitar and the reverb on the $30 amp I play through. So its almost always straight guitar.
Thank you for that beautiful lesson on wharf rat. Your professional teaching and guitar playing skills are superb. I am certainly not at such a level but you give me something to work with and I thank you
