- Comprehensive footage of Günter Netzer, one of the greatest footballing playmakers ever and arguably the finest midfield playmaker in German footballing history.
Credit should go to the relevant figures and tv channels (Canal/BR 50 etc). Also took some stuff from christinayan's vid so credit to him/her.

My all-time footballing hero. Gunter encapsulated everything that a footballer should be and I was priveleged to watch him every week for many years when I grew up in West Germany. He re-wrote some of the rules and even as an administrator he was a massive success. HSV would never have won the Eurpoean Cup in 1983 without his influence. Brings a tear to my eye watching him as I am still Borussia born and bred. Pure genius!
I concur 100% I am from England and the first match I ever saw was England v West Germany in 1972 and Netzer (and the whole German team) had a tremendous impact on me from then on. He was a little fragile but never tried to kick anyone and just used his skill, anticipation and intelligence. A corinthian spirit in the cynical professional era and physically and mentally he probably suffered for it. Kazimierz Deyna and Antonin Panenka were similar players. And I never saw Netzer verbally abuse a referee unlike today's awful Erling Haaland.
Unbelievable player. Genuinely one of the best passers of all-time, up there with the likes of Michel Platini.
It is wonderful to watch this compilation. Netzer glided through games, effortlessly spraying passes to his teammates.
The best player in the best German side of all time . That 72’ side was playing better football and were even better than that 74’ even Gerd Muller said the same thing . That 74’ side weren’t playing like World Champions , while that 72’ certainly were . Thanks for the video on a truly gifted playmaker.
You are welcome!
Netzer was truly a special player and it was a treat watching that '72 vintage strut their stuff, with Netzer & Kaiser pulling the strings!
It's a shame how that Euros winning German side and Netzer's Gladbach are somewhat forgotten, whilst the only remaining rhetoric is that of the efficient German machine somehow triumphing against Cruyff's total footballing side in the 1974 WC.
@@footballsgreatest2645 Can’t disagree with a word you said . If only that German team of 72’ had played against England yesterday.
Germany never played better than with Netzer in Euro '72.
Again, absolutely amazing. Made my night!
This compilation is a wonderful piece of work. Many many thanks to the uploader for creating this! Netzer's abilities as one of the greatest classic playmakers are now finally visible to all of us who came too late to watch him live!
30 minutes of pure class! Excellent passing, keepin' the pace and the rythm of the play, long balls and great controlling. A german legend! And what a style!
Gran jugador. Fue el Mago de los pases largos. 👍
one of the best playmaker I have ever seen, extraordinary long passing skills especially crosses and has an eagle like vision
Netzer along with, Beckenbauer, Overath, Schuster, Matthäus, are the five most technical skilled German players, I've ever seen.
I don’t think matthaus is even in the top 10 most technically skilled players in German football. He was more of a powerhouse than a technician.
Littibarsik?
I am in awe at the amount of research it took to compile this extraordinary video! 30 minutes is really not easy for a player who played in the 1960s and 70s! Günter Netzer is one of my favorite players ever although he was before my time. What a superb player he was, definitely superior to any German player of today (my opinion).
Cheers
Probably the most technical german player in history
Outstanding creative offensive midfielder✨
Borussia Mönchengladbach is my favorite ✨
I would like to have been a Moenchengladbach or Real season ticket holder between 1971-75.
He was the best Spielmacher ever, Bernd Schuster was also great !
Indeed. Both Schuster and Netzer were absolutely brilliant and alongside Overath, 3 of the best playmakers ever in German footballing history.

Compilations of Schuster if you are interested!
surely one of the best football players in all world football history Gunter Netzer . an amazing and fantastic football genius .
A truly great player.
Probably the greatest passer the world has ever seen. He could pass and shoot with both feet with accuracy, with the inside or the outside of both feet. Tremendous runner, covering spaces like a gazell. His career was short. He lost his form when he went to Real Madrid. Probably a culture shock, but also some other intangibles as well. Was left out of the ‘74 squad due to that, and some politics in the German squad, probably spearheaded by Beckenbauer. One of the greatest.
Karl Johansson, Netzer made the squad for the 1974 WC. He was understudy for Overath, but Netzer played against East Germany. Agreed, his international career suffered after he went to Spain.
@@robcoward6940 My mistake. He was on the squad. Thanks.
Elegant and nonchalant; seem to play in his own time and rhythm-playmaker and conductor extraordinaire ⚽️
Wow! Many thanks!
You're welcome
He was my favourite player because of his passing, presence and ballhandling
Amazing player.
Like other comment, impressive to compile 30mns of a player of the 60's~70's.
I came here because of a very famous Spanish football analyst called Julio Maldonado 'Maldini' who said he's one of the best 11 German players ever because of his high class. Indeed, you can hear this commentator voice in this video haha.
Was?
Egal woher du kommst, egal wohin du gehst,

Today's game he would've more like a regista.
He plays like gerson nunes of brazil of that winning 1970 team.
So Netzer was there. I've never seen such precise long balls in football. I thought Pirlo was the best in those but this guy is miles clear of pirlo.
quelle technique
Legendary player,legendary team BMGB
Natürlich ein Gladbacher!
Wow, what a beautiful compilation! Thank you so much!
Cheers
Netzer ,cervello fine , fisico teutonico e piedi da brasiliano !
Pues yo lo comparo con Diego y no es broma 16:59
A brilliant player, but 3 WC (1966, 1970, 1974), West Germany team played with Overath as a conductor. And one major full by Gunter tournament only - Euro 1972, despite the fact they are almost the same age - Netzer - 14.09.1944, Overath - 29.09.1943.
Well, that's a bit disingenous tbf. Netzer's Gladbach had just been promoted to the Bundesliga and Netzer made his debut for Germany in 1965 whereas Overath had a headstart with Köln in the Bundesliga from 1963, the year in which he also made his debut for Germany. In 1970 he was unfortunately injured and in 1974 he was reportedly out of favour with Schon.
Overath is a great player in his own right and Overath vs Netzer is a never ending debate in itself, but Netzer's credentials speak for themselves. He was the conductor for arguably the greatest German side ever (where even Beckenbauer took the backseat to him) in 1972, and was the star of one of the greatest Bundesliga sides ever which went toe to toe with the mighty Bayern featuring Beckenbauer, Müller, Breitner, Maier etc. In my opinion, I'd say Netzer was the better individual as opposed to Overath but I do realise that I'm biased as Netzer is a favourite of mine, and it's definitely a fair claim to state otherwise as Overath was a fantastic player too.
First, thank you very much for the Netzer compilation. I am also biased because I think Netzer was one of the best, probably from a certain point of view the best player and I include Pele, Cruyff, Messi, Maradona, etc. While Maradona could probably peel potatoes with a football, none of the mentioned players had the “bee line instinct” of Netzer going suddenly - just in the right moment seeing a gap - from the own box to the goal of the opponent (several times during a football match). I confess, I am not so much interested in football any more (because nowadays there are no Netzers…), but I saw the 2014 final between Germany and Argentina and Messi was endlessly dribbling from the “south to the north” not serving the final purpose of the game, i.e., to achieve a goal. In comparison, Netzer was much more effective probably not so much looking what he can do, but what the entire team can do in a specific moment. From this point of view he was the best conductor ever - so far.
Hi Bruno. I agree with you absolutely. I play many years and I love this kind of players. Not lucky enough cause I was born a little late, 1965, to enjoy this BIG guys at the pick of his career. Nowadays is just a poor imitation of the Game. If the best for ten years, are Messi and Cristiano, nothing more to say... is a joke. As you wrote: No Netzers anymore :( And No Kempes anymore, No Socrates anymore, No Pele anymore... I could write such a huge list. Cheers!
Netzer has always made clear that he was not quite as keen as Overath to play in the national team. He was a very independent-minded player and always had his troubles with managers, particularly with Helmut Schön.
Hi vitka0120,
I appreciate the stimulating discussion! I believe that Netzer was like Pink Floyd. You cannot compare the music of them with other musicians. It is intrinsically Pink Floyd. Likewise Netzer is Netzer, a comparison is hardly possible. I mean he was really conducting the game in a unique manner.
Cheers!
Bruno
Grandissimo fuoriclasse forse meglio di Beckenbauer
world class of his day
💯👍
Ottimo video!
germany play on and on against Italy but it will end up losing every time
Crack súper Crack Netzer 👍🏻
Great Video ✨⭐
Shit, they had so much space in those times... I doubt that classic playmakers like Netzer would have a career today.
Or how players like Messi, Cristiano and most modern attackers wouldn't have been able to forge a career facing some of the physical and no-nonsense defenders 'of those times'. It works both ways.
very good point Tyrion !!
Netzer could blow weedy messi over with his breath,
