I have some reservations about this mask. I’m a frontline healthcare worker who has been in direct contact with covid patients. The gold standard in NHS hospitals are FFP3 masks. But even with these there are a lot of obstacles to overcome. Briefly face shape, facial hair (clean shaven is recommend and correctly putting the mask on. Staff are also required to undertake a FIT test, to see how well it fits your face, to learn how to put it on create an effective seal. We also (with the mask on) are put inside a sealed plastic hood and a very bitter chemical is sprayed inside the hood at different intervals to see how long it takes for you to taste it. This shows you how effective the mask is if it is fitted correctly or how ineffective the mask is if it’s not fitted correctly or does not fit your face type. Unfortunately the mask would not fit my face effectively so I was not given clearance to wear one. This led to me catching Covid and getting very sick due a high viral load on an infected ward. So be cautious with any claims or hopes that you will be ok.
It's always good to see new products like this coming to the market, the major downside is the price being as high as it is, even factoring in a cost per use, it is still high. I think the only thing I would like it to have is a reusable washable filter set, although not sure if that would be more environmentally friendly or less. Great video Jon.
Thanks for the feedback - I agree with your comments on the price - I think if they sold at volume the price would fall - but may never get volume at the price!
Despite providing a referral link, I felt like this was a very fair review representative of your honest opinion, and while I'm not interested in the product, I respect and appreciate that. Great content!
Yesterday I noticed a box of Honeywell N95s at the Walmart entrance for those without them and when I remarked on them they gave me one to try. First mask I’ve had that was breathable, sealed well, was comfortable, and did not fog my glasses. When I thanked them while leaving they gave me a handful to take along with me. This being Florida there was not more than 30% of us masked inside.
I don’t care about the looks… if I want a mask that works I just get the 3M Aura 1862+ FFP2 ones… 20 for the same £50. The surface area of these is probably double or triple this example - and breathability is absolutely fine. CE marked, made in UK too - much better fit and finish than the Chinese KN95s on Amazon.
Hi Jon, that’s really interesting! I have had a special mask already since the beginning of the Pandemic which is manufactured in Australia (came it in 2019 in respose to the bush fires there). The Manufacture is called “Australair” and has a vrey similar construction with an outer neoprene mask shell and a renewable filter element which fits inside! The manufacturer claims better than 99,99 % at submicron size. It also has aluminium encapsuled Non return valve rubber membranes. The air breathed out is discharged radially over your cheeks and does not cause problems for others in your immediate vicinity, but makes exparation a “breeze”. Replaceable filter elements last 28 days with continuous use! The filer also has a special wel fitting nose bridge with a neoprene seal and fits really snugly around the nose preventing fogging up of any spectacles!
If the air breathed out is unfiltered that makes the mask unsuitable for use in a pandemic. It's just as important to protect other people from your own bacteria and viruses as yourself from theirs.
Many thanks Jon, very useful. Looks like the mask with the mostest. I cannot see an urgency to purchase one now but will instead wait for an (almost) inevitable price drop.👍
Hello Jonathan. Love your videos and review of this product. I checked the web site and didn’t find an answer to my question. Perhaps you can. Do the elastic straps fit around your head vs around the ears? I find straps around the ears to be very uncomfortable. Cheers. 👍🏻
Hi, and thanks for the kind comments - just round the ears is the answer - I've not seen any round the head options with this one. It is extremely lightweight and the straps are wide and the tension is not too strong so better than you might expect round the ears., and very quick to put on.
The mask looks interesting and I have just one question: how do you storage it when you are not using it? e.g while dining in the office room. If you can't storage it safely to avoid potential contamination of viruses, this design is actually worse than any other kind of Non-disposal masks.
The FAQ website of Masuku did not have guidelines on how to storage it. All they said is don't fold or bend the mask because you might damage the mask. But the storage problem is one of the essential questions for all long-time keepers, and a mask with $70 costs is definitely not for one-time use only. I would rather use KF94 if Masuku couldn't solve this problem.
Hi - I am not sure what you mean - if I plan to use mine I store it in the bag I have with me. I am not sure how this is different to how you would store a cloth mask?
@@JonGadget You wouldn't want to put the mask in the bag tho because the outside could be contaminated, then causing everything in the bag to become contaminated. I guess there are two solutions here, either loosen the straps to make them longer and keep it under your jaw. The second is a zipLock bag. I'd probably take a paper towel and place it on the table, outside up while eating cuz I’m lazy and the odds of anything going underneath to the inside are very slim.
Isn’t that a little too much of an advertisement? Just asking. Also announcing 99% filtration is a pointless statement as it depends on the size of what you are filtering right?
Most of the higher end mask materials don’t work as a ‘net’ to catch particles of a given size - they use electrostatic charge in the fabric to attract much smaller particles. So while you make a good point to question this particular mask - the general point that folks make about viral particles being too small for FFP2/3/N95 masks is not correct.
Thanks for the feedback. I have no affiliation with Masuku, I researched extensively based on my experience (like we all have over the last 2 years) purchased and tested. The video includes my thoughts on the item and is designed to be informative so people can draw their own conclusions. I also try and make it interesting - music, cutaways etc. - this is quite new so if I get a lot of negative feedback I can always tone it back. The N95 standard is derived from the fact that these types of masks can at least filter 95% of aerosols around 0.3 μm. Hope that helps.
Reading the technical specifications, it seems that these masks are certified to filter 94% of particles > 3 micron. A typical N95 mask will filter 95% of particles > 0.3 micron. I would think that an order of magnitude difference is significant.
FFP2 masks operate at 94% I believe and are considered comparable to N95 in terms of safety. I found this comparison information with medical mask which highlights the significant differences. 'FFP2 respirator masks filter down to 0.075 micrometre solid particles. The masks are then tested by seeing what percentage of these small particles make it through and, in the case of getting FFP2 certification, only six per cent or less can do so. While standard medical masks only filter three micrometre droplets.'

I'll start with I'm biased. I'm a Paramedic of 30 years, I've vaccinated thousands from the age of 6 to 100 and I'm a Covid case tracer. On a personal side ..wearing a mask and getting vaccinated does offer protection to you and those around you. We live in an age when you can find any "fact" that will confirm the mindset you already have. It's not a conspiracy, it's not an infringement on your rights....it's just being unselfish and looking out for others. Anyway...mask wearing has been common around the World prior to the pandemic and a quality mask...worn correctly may become commonplace. The countries who have been successful in keeping the numbers down have been those who follow medical professionals, don't take things personally, work together and think of others. Japan is a prime example of this. In the future I most likely will mask up in heavily congested area or in any medical setting. One key thing...if the ones around you are conspiracy theorists you need a mask that will offer protection to you equally or maybe more than protecting them. As people refuse to get vaccinations proven safe and effective...we will certainly see a huge resurgence of small pox, measles, mumps and other diseases that were knocked out years ago. On the job I was exposed to diseases that were all but gone. Pollution, dust and pathogens are always around us. The population is ever growing and some are choosing to ignore facts and responsibility. This virus will be here for some time to come...and the next one may be just around the corner. Be safe-Be well.

No problem 👍
Would it be considered an everyday mask or only for special circumstances.
for me it would be for when it's needed ie. busy train, choking pollution, etc. If I was immunosuppressed it would be more everyday

About £1/$1

94% vs 95% is not an order of magnitude, its 1 % difference so practicaly the same. Doesn't change the fact that this mask is useless by design.
