Weller was 21 (I think) when he wrote this track. How, at that age, do you have your finger on the pulse of society so clearly? & then elucidate it so eloquently? Breathtaking talent.
Well, I think he might have been watching Coronation Street one evening with Mike Baldwin, the factory owner, buying cigars from Alf Roberts' corner shop but that's just my take on it. Great song.
Men of a certain age and mind are brought to tears remembering being young lads, and lasses, at Jam gigs in their youth. I know coz I'm lucky enough to have been one of those lads 😄👍
Men of that age in Australia are still pissed The Jam never came here . They would have got a scooter escort in Adelaide from about 30 Vespas , the Clash got one and seemed to dig it , drank beer after the gig for a few hours & answered Q's about The Jam.
@@stuartharrison165 Didn't know they didn't get to play Australia, still the Clash had that energy in their gigs and was lucky enough to have seen them.
@@jonathansteadman7935 Clash were great but within a few yrs Mick Jones turned them into the rock cliche they said they hated & Joe couldn't prevent it . Weller's never let that happen , although Style C had their dodgy moments .Never team up with a Mick , especially if he thinks chewing matches is cool .
That would probably be myself mate.... I was at that Toronto performance I believe it was government... Kool haus.. . Looking forward to the History show September 2024 should be a good one after 7 years waiting patiently.....🇬🇧🛵🌻🍵❤
Seen the Jam live in Dublin 1978 brilliant gig , Fair play to them for coming over not a lot of bands would play in Ireland then . Much respect for Weller ! ☘️
One of those amazing songs that makes me wish I was from the other side of the pond. Paul Weller is a British treasure who has left an immortal legacy of great music.
The sentiment of the song is the same where ever you are! The dreams of being more successful and rich and being envious of others who are; but forgetting that it is not money that makes us Human!
Watching this i really got to thinking that Paul does really need to pick up the phone and tell Rick and Bruce to meet him at the van and be ready to take back this Country We All Love ! GOD Bless the Jam and the Generation that followed them which remain to this day, Children with a Dream !
In parts he sings the verses a little different to the record (like at 48 seconds )..sounds better than the original. Every now and then, everything comes together perfectly and a little bit of magic happens - this is one of those times.
I am a creative writer and decided to put this song with the Hollies Bus Stop and man at the bus stop was born, I love the jangly 1966 sound of both songs, this would have fitted easily on Revolver
This looks like Braehead...If it was then the sound in the auditorium was abysmal, I know i was there. Weller kicked up fuck the next day, swore he'd never play it again. This sounds great though.

Agreed mate.
@@alanwyattI read somewhere that they had to knock off recording at a set time so Paul could go home and have tea/watch Coronation Street 😁

Indeed. Apparently one of their greatest ever tracks was originally titled: Last Tram Home at Midnight.
One of the greatest songs ever written.
Someone make me a time machine please. All my hairs on my arms stand up to this one. Always will be my favorite album.
Does the same to me, Quality!!!
Love the Jam seen them in Dublin 1978 fair play to coming over with all the
Shit was going on at the time
Setting Sons for me but still love Sound Affects.
God created all men equal ❤
They aged in front of us as we aged also. Amazing song writing. It’s humbling.

Hello ... there were a few of us girls too!
@@Wattsie Yes, you're right there, took my sister to her first gig, think it was the Sound Affects tour 👍

The youth of today should listen hard!
Yes they sound listen ! Never be a band like the Jam again Lucky enough to have seen them All mods Cons Tour in Dublin 1978 . Never forget it !
Best lineup of solo Weller. Steve white was an amazing drummer
Damon Minchella stinking the place out on bass though. Arrogant prick if ever there was one
@charlatanefc
Almost as good as Rick 'pube' Buckler.
Met Steve abd Damon in Toronto 2012 I think it was at their concert...got a pic with both thanks to Steve...he got someone to take the pic of us.

@@dannyvine3605 : Absolutely.
Steve White's loving it. Thinks he's died and gone to heaven playing this with the Modfather!
Absolutely. His smile is as good as a nod and a wink to the modfather during this fab tune.
I'm one of thousands of mods that bought Sound Affects on release day. Never thought his voice could get better,.
I play it everyday before I go to work, nuff said
Cant believe it's been more than 40 years since I brought the album home ...
My truth , the lyrics come God....god bless John, the old Man helped Paul and hsd a Heart of gold❤
Not all great bands can perform so awesomely live!!!
I am by no means a religious person but that "For God created all men equal" really is quite moving
Ps. The drummer is having the time of his life :)
If it is moving
He did move you
😜🙏
Steve White was also in the Style Council
The best thing about this is the bonding of the audience. The togetherness is universal with all people of the world. ALL PEOPLE ARE EQUAL
This is phenomenal
Anthemic, timeless, uniting. If this doesn't stir you if it doesn't make you want to pogo with your mates then you are not alive.
Makes me weller up,!! Love you jam fans, never to be repeated, legend x
My all time favorite jam song

If you want solidarity this is your tune from a iconic Mr Paul Weller.☯️
There's me thinking - 2002, of that's only a couple of years ago...
No, it's 20 years! Two decades! Where does the time go?!
In parts he sings the verses a little different to the record (like at 48 seconds )..sounds better than the original. Every now and then, everything comes together perfectly and a little bit of magic happens - this is one of those times.
Agreed. Thank you.

The guy jumping with his m8 at 2:40 made me give a massive smile, coz thats what it's aw about imo
