  • So many mechanisms so little time to learn them! Thankfully this video explains the hydroxide and water reaction with a haloalkane in double quick time. All with explanations of what a mechanism actually is.

      No I don't have a PhD. Just a passion for chemistry and education. You certainly don't need a PhD for that. :-)

      Allery Chemistry Most of the British pennies are either a copper alloy or a ferrous metal plated with copper.
      I had some old coins and someone told me adding ethanoic acid and sodium chloride, both common household items, would remove the rust, cooper oxide from the old coins....and It worked!!!!!! I had no idea how
      please explain. Thank you

    i dont understand why the bromine has a 1- charge, shouldnt it be 2- as it has gained 2 electrons?

    In h20 there are 2 lone pair of electron on oxygen, you have shown only one lone pair in the mechanism, Where did the other one went?

    at around 7 minutes, you said the oxygen has a positive charge because it has too many bonds but oxygen has 6 electrons in its outer shell and is only forming three bonds so how is that too many?

    With the water, do you need another water molecule so that the hydrogen ion gets removed from the oxygen if that makes sense, like with the ammonia

    Hello, in the reaction with water, in the last step, what happens to the br-, as youve added H+, but I was just wondering if the br- is still present? Thank you :)

    What would be the reaction if a Halogenoalkane reacts with aqueous silver nitrate in ethanol? it is in the specification for Edexcel and I have no idea how the reaction would look like

    HBr will not form in reaction with H2o becous water is a polar protic solvent due to its protic nature it will surround the Br- 1st , due to which all br- will be surrounded by h2o and no hbr will form ,, SIR PLEASE REPLY IF I AM RIGHT??

      It has 2. Only show 1 in mechanisms as only one gets involved in the reaction.

      Heat under reflux with a solution of sodium or potassium hydroxide (source of OH-) in a solution of 50/50 ethanol and water
