Thank you for clarifying some questions generated in your last vlog post. I lived in France in 1982. I was on a study abroad program while attending Moorhead State University (now University of MN Moorhead). People can be quite unfriendly until they get to know you, no matter where you are in the world. I remember moving in with my French family and overhearing the oldest son comment that I was a "rich American" because I had 2 suitcases full of clothes. I was planning to be there from January to June, so I didn't feel like I over-packed. To be clear, children of rich Americans rarely attend state universities and I was not one of them. That said, I met wonderful people there, as I do wherever I go. I'm so glad to hear that you have not given up on your chateau. You probably have more prayer warriors than you realize. Please remain open to the suggestions of your supporters and fans. You might not wish to pursue some ideas personally, but your neighbors, friends or family members might wish to build cottage businesses there and compensate you in kind. The raw materials for a soap making business could support your neighbors. Flowers from your gardens or ones planted by local farmers for cutting, hay from your fields, fruit from your orchard, etc., could help locals build successful businesses on land not used productively for decades. Local churches could use your facilities for events in exchange for a organized day of labor at the chateau. The possibilities are endless. Please don't assume that all chateau owners were horrible monsters. They were businessmen not too dissimilar to ones today. They were dukes, counts, viscounts, etc. and employed the people in their communities and led them in defending attacks from foreign invaders. France would not have been France without them. Not every chateau owner lived like the monarchs and they employed many people around their properties. What you are doing there will affect people for many years to come. Kerp the faith! Love in Christ!
GREAT perspective on what your future is on this property. Love the way you take one day at a time. The trolls are not worth the time to talk about. They are the misfits that are jealous of what you are doing.
What a great place to call home. wow. So glad you have employers who are willing to work with you on scheduling, maybe a semester in France for the students to learn the language and culture. Food and drink appreciation. I would sign up for that one. Something will come your way. Thanks for sharing and so glad you got the porch braced up. Looking forward to your next installment.
The purchase of your chateau is faith in action. You are so correct, nothing is safe when going beyond your comfort zone. However great things are rarely accomplished by being safe or practical. I’m restoring a rare gothic barn at my home in Vermont that will become a family chapel. Nothing made sense financially about my project or yours, but the joy of preserving a small piece of history makes it so worthwhile.
:O The support of the terrace needs some serious repair. That steel needs some cleaning and then painting with rust inhibitor. If you haven't already, call in a concrete engineer. You need a game plan. If there's metal rebar inside, there may be spalling.
So glad to see a good ol’ Saskatchewan boy working & solving problems. I am from BC but married a Saskechewan boy too and he is my “Best” handyman. I would not hire anyone else. Good job with the beam & posts. 🇨🇦 Calgary
I have.been watching your videos since you started sharing your journey. I very much enjoy seeing your challenges and triumphs. Thank you most sincerely for sharing your life with your fans.
I'm so captivated by your vlog, your mission, and your beautiful Chateau. May our Lord Bless you, provide for the chateau and it's ministry and keep you safe during any necessary travel. Thank you both for allowing us to follow along as you work hard and also pursue a non profit ministry.
I watch many different blogs of chateaus adventures but I can really relax when I watch yours. You have come a long way and do what you can when you can. Keep it up. Safe travels back to the States. The "fair" sounds so interesting and can hardly wait to see it.
Beautiful dream became reality for you. The upkeep and freedom gone I've been through before I have many children to worry about. Now I'M content with several places not to worry as I age. I enjoy watching your progress and dreams and best of all is sent.
Ithink you’re really right about owners have to have a really strong work ethic. When I watch other vlogs, I don’t know how the owners have the energy to work on their properties 24/7. They’re young couples investing blood, sweat and tears. I feel sad that you have to leave as well. And hope somehow the vlogs will keep people interested in your home in France and it’s improvements. I’ve worked in a Christian boarding school in food services for a decade while our kids attended. And your ministry has a lot of potential. I hope your plans are manageable but I know God will instruct your path.Blessings!
Sounds like another business venture in the form of a b&b or retreat /conference/ events venue would help provide an income stream for the chateau's maintenance and renovation?
while your ideas may sound great on paper, the realities are that they all require a large financial investment and a continuous workload from morning until night (B & B).
What you have said is actually the truth which is really why I watch and wonder in awe at all the people who are doing this right now. It must be an ingrained dream first of all but somewhere along the track reality must set in and a wakup call will follow.Still it will be nice while it lasted.
I didn’t realize you were still a professor and the funds were separate for the chateau. An idea is maybe set up projects that need to be done with a cost and get donations for it. You can even list several projects that need money to complete. Another idea is to do online classes for the college. I have my masters and took many classes online, if I didn’t take them online, I would not have been able to finish my degree. My plan was to always get my PhD and teach online classes but since I’m going blind and seeing the screen is difficult even though I have it set so that the font is big enough to read, I don’t feel confident enough to continue as I planned. God is in charge and leading the way as I am now on disability so I am refocusing my life from a career. Anyway, great job, just some suggestions, I’ll be continuing to pray for your ministry, I think it’s a great idea and God has His hand in it. .
I work with structural steel and would had really love to give you a hand with those beams but I am too far away. Please brace it all very well, you may want to put a couple of additional wood beams and paint them to help them last longer. The main steel beams may be reinforced with a plate and new W beams installed but in the meantime the wood beams and shoring will work.
Amen. T o that. It all belongs to God. We are all of us temporary dwellers here. Our time here is limited and unknown. I love the Chateau. It is to bad that the French government does not support its beautiful historical buildings. I have seen a few that people have simply walked away from. Gorgeous buildings abandoned with everything left behind. Such a shame! God bless you two.
I get everything u said in ur vlog. So sad though to think that maybe if you guys go that’s it for this absolutely beautiful chateau. Follow what “Doing it ourselves” is doing to get some xtra income to be able to maintain this beautiful home.
Oh, yes they will. The thieves, that would go for a chateau, often don't care, if there are no valuable furniture, paintings, etc. But things, like copper pipes, fireplace surrounds, panel walls, architectural details, chandeliers... I watch alot of the chateau channels, and more than a few are missing especially marble fireplaces, that have been removed, when the places stood abandoned, because they can be very valuable, and hard to track. And that has to be done by somewhat "professionals", because they need special tools, trucks and gear to lift things. So make sure, you have those cameras running, and warning signs all over. You might even want to get an alarm, that tells you, if power is cut from the whole place. BUT... If I where in your shoes, I would stay put, set up a patreon, "Buy-me-a-coffee", and make a LOT of vlogs. DIY, decor, brocante shopping, cooking, you name it. Since you own the place, you can legally set up a chateau restoration fund, for the patreon money, which will mean, that you don't have to pay tax of that money. But then all of that can only be used for restoration. Stephanie from "Chateau diaries" did that, and she is doing great! She then takes her paycheck, from the RUclips income. So, go see a lawyer 😉
Happy to hear about the repair. Sounds like it will be great when completed. Y’all have made so much difference. But leaving a chateau empty for extended periods is really iffy. Could you get someone or a couple to stay there while you’re gone. Just to keep things going? I understand it might be hard. How long will you be back over here?
Nothing like a good Comice to meet people. You need to try un pâté aux prunes if you haven’t yet. You buy it in a boulangerie/pâtisserie 😜 it is Angevin and delicious and it is the perfect time, August.
I would check that learning new things utube channel to learn some French. They may even sponsor you and give a discount to viewers. I wished I could remember the correct name of it, but I’m sure you could find it. Sumbersion in the cutler and events as well as using dialogue with the merchants will help you learn too. I have lived in several countries and learned their languages as well. Hugs and love from Texas.
How will you keep your vlogs going when your not there? Maybe a future co owner that loves it as much to stay and keep improving it while your in the states making vlogs in it to generate $ for fixing it. I love what your doing!
You have one of the most beautiful chateaus I have ever seen. My wife and I live near Steinbach, MB, will have to play the Mennonite game some time and see who are mutual connections are, lol.
We've thought about it all right. We're well situated for it, but right now our visa won't allow us to take money (we're not paid for the study abroad stuff).
I so agree, but of course, it's none of my business... but with potential lockdowns etc, planning on going back and forth half way across the planet on a regular basis just doesn't make any sense at all IMO. I get the faith concept, but on the other hand, sometimes God says "I sent you a beautiful Wedding business opportunity, and...".
I think it would be illegal at this point for us to take money for hosting a wedding. But.... when the visa's are being granted again, and we get one, it's a good idea.
That could be caused by water ingress from your steps the Petherick s had the same problem i think they re surfaced up above in the end and the problem was solved
The non-profit org should be paying you rent for the use of the house. And you can draw salaries, you've said otherwise in a couple other videos and I don't understand the reasoning why it couldn't.
The non profit can't afford it. We're just a start up, but we're ok with that. Someday, we may take a salary, and hopefully someday the non profit will be able to buy the chateau and own it. But for now, this works fine.
I (Rob) work at an interdenominational school Multnomah University in Portland OR (Christian). But we also worked at an E. Free Church for around 10 years, and I'm ordained Mennonite:). We've had kids from lots of backgrounds come with us on the study abroad.

Love each and every blog! You two are amazing and inspirational.
You both are doing a wonderful job restoring this beautiful Chateau !!! So happy to be a Patreon. God bless you both.
