Bowser Loal Loads- Quick Review

  • I know, it has been a while! I'm still here, just busy and not doing a lot of RUclips. BUT- work is happening on the layout. This is a quick (for me!) review and use of the new Bowser Coal Loads. I have been working on loads for my hoppers- both home made and commercial offerings. I also ask the question- what is your TIME worth? This is in comparison to home made coal loads.
I have also done a LOT of DCC Sound installs- but didn't video any of them. There are tons of other YT videos covering this topic; not sure what I can add to the general knowledge.
I do hope all are doing well.

Agree Rob , sometimes it is your time that's a lot more valuable.

Rob, you have a point. Good to hear your ramblings again.
Maybe we need another overview of the layout?

I hot glued about 5 4-penny finishing nails to the bottom of my coal loads. Still pops out of the hopper easy when I hold a magnet over the load. And I still have about a pound of the finishing nails that I found out in my garage....
And nice to see you back.😀

Good to hear from you Rob.
I do a bit of both, making and buying. With the bought ones I tend to "customise" them slightly by adding a few sprinkles of the same material so they don't all look the same, but as I'm in my attic and no one else is ever likely to see them, it's just for my own satisfaction/entertainment. Cheers

Good to see you back my friend. Hope all is well with you and the family. I think I've seen the magnet trick before but it was a lot more work. Magnets on both ends of the load, counter sunk into the load for connectivity between the load and lift magnets. His first attempts countersinking the magnets in the middle resulted in a bunch of broken loads. All of his loads were glued ballast on cardboard and he had a great system for building them. I like your way better, cleaner, easier and far more efficient time wise. That leaves time for scenery details and "fixes" of the little things that no one but you notices. Can't wait for a new overview of the layout as we follow a couple trains around, hint, hint 🤭
    Be well Rob,
    Blaze

I have a bunch of real coal chunks that I am going to make into coal loads eventually. Thinking more of live coal loads for my modular layout. The big layout will be a little difficult for live coal so might not do live coal for that.

The magnet setup I'll have to try. The plastic coal loads I spray with Krylon make it stone 18212 Obsidian. It's a textured paint. Looks like coal when applied usually 2 coats.

For the Rapido car maybe you could add spacers at the bracing location to raise the load depending on how you want the load to sit in the car.

I bought a set of BLF coal hoppers with the loads and covered the loads with real coal and that made them look good

I think using glue would be a bit better with the magnets just to ensure you're getting the proper polarity. I like the idea to rapidly empty a whole drag of coal carrying cars.

I have cars that have loads that are no longer made. Therefore, if I want to have loads for the same car, that's a new release but no loads available, I either build my own for it or just resin cast the number of new loads needed. I have a number of loads that I have to make.

They all look nice to me. Definitely worth the cost IMHO, even if you have tons of time to spend modeling there are probably better places to allocate it.

Yep your right. If you waste your time making everything. A person probably will burn out or never get close to your goal. The term work smarter not harder. In this case buy smarter and not work harder.
