Stealth Locomotive: BLI NYC GP35 Decoder and Details

  • I decided to try one of the new Stealth locos from Broadway Limited. I certainly do not need this unit, but I wanted to try it. (Do any of us really NEED model railroading stuff??) Let's face it, if you get one of these you are planning to uncork it so you can add a DCC decoder. So I show what I did in that area, in my usual rambling way. (This is a long video...) I added an ESU LokSound 58429 DCC/Sound decoder.
The unit comes with a 21 pin motherboard and a speaker, so all you really need to do is add a 21 pin decoder. I thought about adding a stay alive device, but can't find the room for one. I babble on about what I did, show some installation differences between the ESU, TCS, and Soundtraxx decoders, discuss the BLI light settings/decoder Aux settings, and show the unit running with the ESU decoder installed.
I also added some details, despite BLI indicating that the unit had "road specific details". I found this to be untrue, as the unit was missing the front truck ATS shoe and the short hood ATS motor-generator. These are both glaring examples of road specific details - for the NYC- that should have been included. I added them both, using Custom Finishing details.
Despite this, the model is very nice overall. I have not investigated other roads, so I can't properly speak to those units.

Rambly or not, I am so happy to see a video from you again, and thanks for this in depth discussion. I found it very interesting indeed.

This is an excellent review video! Great job discuasing the details of the model and looking into the interior of the models to see what can be worked with and what cannot. Most reviewers never go inside to dicuss about electronics and the prospects of mechanical reliability.

Good one Rob!!! One final last detail is drilling out those molded in class lights and replacing with MV clear lenses #LS 19/ .078 lens dia. Use a #47 drill.
I've added these lens to all my Kato EL GP-35's, looks awesome.

Very true. Worth looking into! I must say however, the BLI speaker sounds okay, at least to me.

Is it strange that every time I start wondering when you're going to post a new video, you come along with an update within the next few days? 😄

Have you ever done a cab ride on your layout? If not? I think it would be interesting to see.

There is a new firmware update for the ESU programmer also, now you can adjust the treble and bass independently.

I was gonna comment on the rail then realized I had much more video to go, so I removed the comment, haha! Sure enough, you noticed it.
No real idea, but it's possible that it's both got the details as ordered and delivered, and also not be exactly how they put them into service. A few of my Walthers NYC locos also came with black side rails when vintage pics show yellow. I figure maybe NYC painted them after delivery or something.

You are correct- you need to look at the era you plan to model as things did change overtime. In this case, every photo I have seen (and I certainly have not seen them all!) show the handrails as yellow. From delivery as new up to the PC merger. So I painted them yellow last night.

I like these- the beauty is you get the ESU decoder programming AND a keep-alive on the motherboard!

Looks good and sounds good but does not go very fast though, I guess the manufactures had to reduce costs in some places which is too bad because I would love to see that thing go around corners lifting off the rails.

I slowed it down in the LokProgrammer- I don't like fast trains. The unit can go much faster. Very easy to adjust some CVs for this.

ESU power pack has 3 wires, I thought one would have trouble programming or updating the ESU decoder using other keep-alive units that has 2 wires as it is still energized? Am I wrong about this?

    • @robbennett1965
      @robbennett1965 8 месяцев назад +1

I have added the two wire TCS KA's to several ESU decoders. You are correct- the third wire is for "control" so that the power supply is disabled during programming. I am using a SPROG on my programming track and thus far have not had an issue programming an ESU decoder with a 2 wire KA attached. Please note- ESU doesn't like it when you do this, and it may void the warranty. I know I'm risking it, but the TCS KA's can fit in many more places than the ESU PowerPack. Plus the ESU PP is a bit more expensive than the other options.
