This is still possibly the most gorgeous vampire film ever made. The action is topnotch, the art design and direction is unparalleled and the story and style is so good that its simply unbelievable what they made in 2000. Its awe-inspiring. So many filmmakers have tried to make vampire films, but none come close to this perfection and they always mess up one way or the other with tropes and stuff, making predictable, mediocre films. They cant even come close to this.
And its so underrated so few people even know about it. And the anime medium is so perfect for this too. You can't do this stuff with live action. I literally HAVE to watch this every few years. Its just TOO good.

at first when I watched this movie I felt like D as the main character lacked luster but after finishing the movie and some time to mull it over in my head it felt like a rather accurate representation of a immortal being who's lived many life times. it shows in how little he interacts with the other character as he would have had countless life times of interaction and building relationships only to watch what the outcome always is, at least when it comes to humans. it forms a special kind of isolations which gets shown really well I felt.

D is an amalgamation of western, science fiction, horror and Lovecraftian horror, dark fantasy, folklore and occult science
taking place in the year 12,090 AD
After a nuclear holocaust in like the 1990's or so dubbed as the Nuclear war of which reset human civilization and after 300 years humans reverted back to a more middle/dark ages society and it was then that the Vampires of old mythology long forgotten emerge from their coffins and crypts seemingly predicting the self assured destruction of humanity and using it as their chance to take the reigns of this new world armed with the technology the babes of a new human race had long forgotten
The Vampires enter this new Dark Future as "The Nobility" which is what they're reffered to in the books developing and highly advance technological society eventually though around 5000 years into their rule they began to show signs of decline.
Now Nobles stll exst but in much fewer numbers but they're touch on the earth shows as with their advanced science and technology they recreated mythological monsters like werewolves, dragons, and even developed other chimera's and beastiaries to terrorize the peasentry humans the likes of which infest the frontier and the villages that dot the frontier which are split into sectors
D by the way is rumored to be around 10,000 years old

The world that Hideyuki Kikuchi build with the Vampire Hunter D universe is one of my favorite si-fi universes that exists the unique genre mashup is genius and the crazy stuff that happen there like the vampire war vs aliens or the story and ambiguity regarding the Sacred Ancestor (that is heavily implied but never outright stated to be D's father) and the downfall of the vampire civilization just to name a few.
The only gripe I got with Kikuchi's light novels is that his actual writing is atrocious. The characters are mostly horribly written (especially his women characters) and the stories never properly end or are structured so weirdly that reading them is just headache inducing. I stopped in the middle of Volume 13 because after all theses novels the stark realization hit me that Kikuchi will not improve, that this is his "style" of writing and as much as I love the world of D that was when I was done.

    • @michaelcrabbe3722
      @michaelcrabbe3722 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@g0dhand310
I’ve heard a lot of critics about Kikuchi’s prose and I agree it can be a bit superfluous in its over-elegance. I think as an author, he works well within sizeable novel-length stories. I remember the stretch of novels that were split up into parts were very long and just action-dense and felt padded as stories. The man is a very prolific writer; he writes multiple books yearly, and you get a sense that he’s constantly generating ideas for stories and adding them in without thinking about the overall structure or pace of the story. That's why simpler, straightforward D stories that are consolidated into single novels have been my favorites in the series. Even multiple-part stories like Pale Fallen Angel or Mysterious Journey to the North Sea can feel stretched of a good idea, so stuff like Raiser of Gales, Tale of the Dead Town, or Pilgrimage of the Sacred and Profane are amongst my favorites in the series.
As for the female characters, my one criticism was in volume 3 where I feel like Leila’s arc of “getting married” sounded strange. In book 3, Leila is raped by her brothers and made into a cold killer, but in helping D at his weakest and protecting him, she finds a redemption from the cutthroat world of a hunter that she felt binded to it's like her soul returns something that went away when Grove mounted her after all her brothers. It doesn’t really make sense for the end of her arc to be “now that the Markus clan are dead,” I’m gonna go marry that dude from a couple towns back. Not to mention D’s attitude about women shouldn’t be Hunters is strange, considering Doris from book 1 is a badass, and there are tons of dangerous female warriors in the universe. Otherwise, I don’t have much of a problem with Kikuchi’s female characters. If this is about a lot of the rape in these books, I don’t think it’s out of place in the setting, and it’s always depicted as really vile and evil, which is apt.
Iriya the Berserker, Granny Viper, Tae, Doris, Miska, Lina, and Elena are all pretty good female characters for me. Not all of them really fall into Damsel roles; some of them are quite adept and skilled. Some of them are quite archetypal like the bullheaded girls Kikuchi likes to write about. That being said, my main problem with some of the novels is the gross amount of action that takes priority. I get it’s an action series, but I always preferred the adventure or lore and ancillary characters that tag along for the ride rather than D facing opponents he’ll obviously cut down. Kikuchi goes out of his way to build opponents up for D just to show off D’s strength, and it’s not that compelling when I’m not quite attached to the villain, and simply making him impossibly strong is not enough for me.
The stuff I like about D is the mystery and the characters that accompany D, learning about the world and the history across a fractured frontier amidst the twilight of a declining race, and D’s place being in neither, making him suitable for being a lens to view the best and worst of both sides of this conflict.

Minor Nitpicking of the film is that one of the big lore points is how due to a nuclear war that wipes out most humans regressing them to medieval society they’ve forgotten how to deal with Vampires and after Vampires took over they also attempted to psychologically suppress any knowledge forcefully
It’s one of the reasons why Vampire Hunters are extremely cutthroat warriors cause the normal safeguards against Vampires have been buried by time and oppression
So the fact that there are crosses is kinda weird

So to summarize. The Dracula of VHD is different from Bram Stoker's.
The Sacred Ancestor, this version of Dracula, predates humanity. Once humanity appeared on Earth he decided to make it so the Nobles, aka Vampires, went into the shadows.
For thousands of years they observed humanity until a nuclear war that was dubbed The Holocaust in which....well, human society ended fucked. The Vampires had seized all the resources needed for humanity to reconstruc society, and humanity, after hundreds of years, was reduced back to tribalistic societies.
Once that happened the Nobles and Sacred Ancestor swooped in and took control.

He had the power to assume the form of a wolf, a horde of rats, or a bat (even his own coachman and gatekeeper and the damn fog), he was a master shape-shifter, and it goes without saying that he also assumed the role of his own father and he before him all the way back to the beginning.

I came across Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust sometime in the early 2Ks. It was towards the tail end of my weebo phase and while I was still into anime, I was starting to outgrow it. I forgot what motivated me to see it -- I was familiar with the original Vampire Hunter D but wasn't super impressed with it. But Bloodlust blew me away. I own the VHS - one of the last VHS tapes I ever bought and shared it with as many friends as I could.
I consider Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust as one of the best vampire stories I've ever seen, anime or live action. It definitely doesn't get enough love by reactors, so I am glad you have decided to see it.
Other anime that hits in the feels in a similar way to this: if you haven't seen Spirited Away, go watch that - it is a masterpiece. I also recommend Tenchi Muyo in Love. This shows the difference between a production being designed as a movie from the outset and one being converted into a movie. The original Vampire Hunter D production should have stayed as a two-parter like it was intended, it wouldn't have felt so disjointed if they had put in the parts they had to leave out for the new run time.

So some story clarification. D is the son of Dracula and a mortal woman who Dracula actually loved. It's implied that Dracula knew that Vampires couldn't be dominating forever and that coexisting with humans was the true future, but the other nobles didn't accept his ways and as the years went on, even outright twisted his will. The story of this countess shows one such noble who was so obsessed with her bloodlust that Dracula himself murdered her out of sheer disgust over her disregard for human lives.
D is implied to either have had training from hell or even had genetic manipulation at a young age to become as powerful as he is and he harbors intense hatred for Dracula and his travels have a passive overarching mission to try and find him.

The muzzle in Mashira’s, the werewolf’s, stomach is a symbolic organism from a species called countenanced carbuncle. It’s the same species as D’s left hand.
Vlad Dracula III Tepes was the basis for Count Dracula. The historical figure died in the late 15th century and the book by Bram Stoker was from the late 19th century. This series takes play over 10 millennia in the future from us, but Vlad Tepes is the Vampire King in here.
I loved this movie but then red the novel and has a hard time getting into the series again because it was so messed up. Like in here Layla is not related to the Marcus brothers but in the novel she is their biological sister and they regularly SA her. 🤢 I could not stay away forever. He’s one of my favorite characters.

As I understand it, Mier loved Charlett for her humanity, and turning her into a vampire would have destroyed that. I like to think that her spirit lived on after her body died and was able to go with him to the stars where they found peace together.
D hadn't been contracted to kill Mier, only to either get Charlett back or make sure she was dead. He must have noticed her ring bouncing along the floor and decided he had no quarrel with Mier, so he let him leave with her body.
It is sad how Grove died, but I think he would have been happy to know Leila had found peace, had a family and that there were people to place flowers on her grave.

Bloodlust is an instance where I believe the adaptation is better than the source material. The third Vampire Hunter D novel, "Demon Deathchase", is much, MUCH darker and tragic than the film: Leila's story is more gut-wrenching because the Marcus brothers are absolute scum (involving her in a history of SA, including Groveck), Carmilla doesn't exist in the book and the spaceship Meyerling and the Daughter are seeking is just a broken down ruin that can't fly, and Borgoff ends up killing Meyer as he dies after which the Daughter takes her own life in grief (a much more Romeo & Juliet type of ending).
All in all, Bloodlust is less oppressive of a story and even with a similarly tragic ending it feels more romantic and less of a downer overall.
P.S. The bit with the Barbarois Elder hitting on D is actually something of an established fact in this world. D is supposedly such a beautiful creature that everyone (yes, EVERYONE) is enamored with him to some extent.
P.P.S. Also, I'm sorry to have to tell you that D's bad luck with horses is something of a running gag in the series, always losing them in one way or another. Heck, one of the books even starts with D carrying his saddle in the middle of nowhere because he's lost it before the story even begins.

This is awesome, I also watched your Vampire Hunter D original reaction and when it comes to the voice acting sounding "cheesy" to you, I can only say that english dubbed voice acting has evolved tremendously over the past few decades... However had you watched that movie back in the 80s or early 90s, you'd have a different experience because english voice acting in most cartoons was even worse. The voice acting could be considered great for it's time but it's hard to articulate that to people from todays time period.
In the 90s we used to say that Vampire Hunter D was one of the hidden treats of the anime world. Bloodlust definitely expanded on what the first one introduced though and I really enjoyed both your reactions to it.

Hey thanks for your review VKunime. I'm not sure what you mean by "condensing books into one movie" because the 1985 anime is based solely off book 1 of the series whereas Bloodlust was based off book 3: "Demon Deathchase".
As for Bloodlust, this is one of the few instances where the movie was better than the book. While the movie follows the book 80% of the way, Carmilla is not present in the book, and there are way more instances of rape, violence towards women, and the overall tone of the book is depressing. This all leads up to, in my opinion, a dreary letdown of an ending whereas the movie ended on a hopeful note.

No anime out there even comes close to being this good. It's a shame this movie isn't more widely known. Ninja Scroll is great but I don't recommend it to people (for obvious reasons...), and even Ninja Scroll does not have a soundtrack & editing as polished as Bloodlust.
