The original dub from the 80s is still way better it has more heart. They redubbed it early in the 2000s and it just has no personality to the voice work.
That’s what I was saying lol. I watch the original dub on RUclips all the time and one of them had the new dub and it weirded me out…..and did not like it. I’m too attached to the original dub and it’s way better
People used to say streamline dubs were bad, but I always dug them. D and the Fist of the North Star one are actually quite a bit better than the japanese version. The writing is also bad ass. I notice they often take the original OST and alter it slightly. In D, they'd often extend the music in some scenes and it worked a lot better.
The designs for the VHD OVA were done by the same guy (Yoshitaka Amano) who did the book illustrations, concept-art for final fantasy and a bunch of anime series for animation-company Tatsunoko pro but very few other OVAs. His work here looks like his work on television series but slightly upgraded. They snuck in the monster from Basket Case into the hallway with all the other monsters. Also the dub is glorious, like Roquefort mixed into a quiche lorraine.
I can't wait for you to watch the next movie: Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust! It is one of my favorite anime movies without underminig this film. Also can't wait to see this reaction!
I do like this movie for what it is but I completely disagree, Bloodlust makes it completely redundant. It makes this one look like a rough draft of a masterpiece sketched out on a napkin.
Wow never expected to see you watching vampire hunter d, especially this one. I always like D as a character, its a like the anime version of Blade. I would say, watch the second one, its better, and even if it have a lot of digital effect and stuff, the art it's pretty great (i think it was a high budget movie, higher than this one or a tv series at least)
Bloodlust is much much better! The big reason for the weird pacing is that this was supposed to be a 2-part OVA, but part way into production, the studio decided that they would turn it into a feature film and they left out a lot of the story, which unfortunately the result was as you saw. It's a shame though, I kinda understand their thinking, but a 2-part OVA would have made for better viewing.
I grew up with the original dub of this-which this sadly is not. However in 2008 I met not only the creator of Vampire Hunter D, but the original artist/illustrator of the books. First time I've ever bowed, quite happily, to someone in my life!
When you watch Bloodlust (which is excellent), go ahead and watch the English voice track, as it's the original track. They dubbed it into Japanese after.
Nerdy fact- this is a whole different voice track than the one I'm used to. Not just the voice actors, but the dialogue is slightly different too. I'm guessing this is newer, as the picture is also as lot cleaner than the DVD I have (circa early 2000s) That bit about "rather be dead than hear Gecko's voice any more" was hilarious tho, I guess the NOLA accent sorta fits the character design but it's so bad 😂😂
Yeah, this is the 2015 Sentai Filmworks dub instead of the 1992 Streamline Dub, I’ve heard people talk about the more recent dub supposedly being more in line with the original Japanese script, barring differences stemming from translating between language families with different grammar styles and rules, combined with the animation of mouths/lip flaps, but I’ve also seen a strange reverence for the older dub from the same folks who whine and complain when even the slightest change is made to convey the same point between languages, lots of pictures of machine translated Japanese text next to official subtitles as if machine translation isn’t the stiffest, most awkward, and unnatural way to translate between two very different languages.
Vampire Hunter D is a lot of things (horror, sci-fi, & adventure), but people are surprised to find that Hideyuki Kikuchi's original inspiration for the franchise was American Westerns. D is the quintessential Western hero: a wanderer motivated by his past while also running from it, stumbling upon the troubles of others who enlist his aid, before forsaking himself back to the wasteland like the man caught between worlds he truly is. D is the same classical transient hero as Rooster Cogburn, Shane, and the Man With No Name, but instead of fighting outlaws and bandits he fights mutants and monsters.
I seen this in the theater when it was originally released 🎭 as a child (10)years old, in Chicago. Just after my dad passed away & when my mom was hospitalized for cancer shortly afterwards.. dark times indeed . Read all the original novels before, this film & books helped me understand how cruel things can be no matter how kind you are.
This was the very first anime I ever watched back in 1990. The first. My parents had a satellite dish that could find dozens of video feed satellites, each with thirty or so channels on them. I don't even remember where I found this movie, but it caused a fascination with japanese anime that still persists thirty years later. They don't make them like they used to, but you still find the occasional gem. Akira, Tank Police, many others from that era are great. Vicky, the dub you watched is not the original dub. A lot of the lines were changed, and yes, the lines were not changed for the better. It made them worse. Almost every line of dialogue was changed a bit in this version compared to the original, altering the original story. It's not a writing problem, it's crappy dub dialogue alterations. There were also sound effects changed like with the flying bat guy noises. I just checked IMDB, and yes, there was a re-release in 2015, with entirely new voice actors and different lines of dialogue. Terrible that you got that version. As for Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, English is the original language it was voiced in. So, there is no awkward translation type dialogues.
The original Vampire Hunter D is okay. It's one of the first anime I've ever seen and it came out before some of the big 90s classics (Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, Battle Angel, etc...). But Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is on another level. It's one of the greatest vampire stories in ANY medium -- live action or anime. And it's so slept on. Bloodlust came out in the early 2Ks so it's showing it's age a little, but the story, action sequences and character designs are still epic. Put it definitely on your must react list.
I never liked the first movie a lot, but Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is really really cool! So even not likening this one i can guarantee that Bloodlust is something completly different!!! Give it a chance! 😀
I’m so happy to see somebody react to this (hopefully you do the sequel as well). The novels these are based off of are absolutely fantastic, especially the full cast audio drama versions
The time setting is 12,090 and takes place 10,000 years after WW3 and there was a nuclear war. Gotta say, I’ve never heard this dub. I originally watched it in the late 90’s and that dub was so much better. Greco wasn’t southern. He sounded almost Spanish if I remember. Lamica and Magnus Lee also had an Eastern European, possibly Romanian, accent. Also, it wasn’t called the “woman’s moon”. It was the blood money or sanguine moon. It was supposed to be a metaphor for a woman’s period.
The streamline dub is the best way to watch this not the new one. It's very good. They always made very slight alterations to the Japanese films osts (extend or reduce the music that's already there) and dialogue that just made them better. And the voice actors are iconic. I love them both, but this is my favorite of the two. I watched it 3 times in the weekend my (high school )friend gave me the VHS, but that was in the late 90s. Watched the second in 2000 at an anime club on a nice big University projector. Incidentally, my friend back then said he didn't like it for its cheesiness too.
Yoshitaka Amano, of Final Fantasy fame, did the covers for the novels, never finished the series but read a few of the books. Great far future premise. but yeah, dubs were like this for a long time, check out an ep of speed racer :P for a movie from the same era that lives up to expectations, probably, would be Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. but that's a Ghibli film and all of them are pretty great.
Thanks for doing a reaction video of VHD. I'm a big VHD fan and it's nice to find someone watching D. Also, the dub that you heard in the 1985 film was a newer 2015 dub from Sentai Filmworks.
This anime was pretty revolutionary. Many in the early 80s were pretty cheesy, filled with stolen star wars sound effects, and appealing to the classic juvenile comic book crowd with gratuitous robots and boobs, but this one was next level. Blew my little 10 year old mind when I first saw it.
yes, you got spoiled with starting out with some of the greats first. so many of the anime from this era suffered from quick, inexpensive voice overs. i remember joining an anime monthly dvd club and this was one of the first titles. watching so many of these in the original japanese audio is so much better. One Piece suffers badly in some areas with the american voice over. great reaction V!
The audio novel with dramatic reading is really good on audible. This movie is based on the first book which are all different. Bloodlust is better in every way and based off another adventure he had. The artist is Yoshitaka Amano who does a lot of the early final fantasy character art drawings and the title drawings for each entry.
This must be re-dubbed, because the voice overs sound much worse and the dialogue is slightly different in many scenes. Still, the anime itself is fantastic. Bloodlust is even better.
huh... this is a rare one for YT reactors to watch. next thing I'd know, she'd be watching something rare like Cross Game. but yeah, some older anime films or OVAs can be kind of hard to get into and can be a bit of an acquired taste, especially those from before the 90's. sure, you get ones that are a must watch that are either wholly a cinematic spectacle and/or had a high production value for the time like Akira, most anime based off Shirow Masamune's work and a majority of Ghibli films. but having to compared to what we have now or even the last decade or two, no one's gonna fault you for having a hard time liking a nearly 40 year old anime.
I remember my brother got me this when I was a kid I was like 8 back in the 90s and I loved it this was my 2nd anime I ever saw after I first saw dbz back in 97 I was 8 going on 9 love vampire hunter d
I second this. Record of Lodoss War was the first fantasy anime I ever saw, and it came out in a time when there wasn't a whole lot of other fantasy anime. I feel like ROLW really kind of started the genre.
Hello. I know this is a year later. But this is actually the first story in the 'Vampire Hunter D' series. It is not a lot of stories in one movie. The book actually explains things better. Some of the questions you ask, you would have to read the whole series to get pieces of answers for. I know you did a reaction for 'Bloodlust', which i am about to watch. 'Bloodlust' is actually the third book in the series. Both this movie, and 'Bloodlust' took liberties with the books, which is why this one seems a bit more cheesy. I do like both movies, but i like 'Bloodlust' a bit more, and i was really excited to be able to read the books which these two animes were based on. I would recommended that you read the series because you would understand more of lore. Also, i did see these two animes before i started to read the books. How they depicted the decayed world really does the books justice. Also, this is supposed to take place thousands of years in the future. Vampires had ruled the world, but then everything went into decay [the author never gets into too much detail]. It is cool that you were able to react to both of these. Now to watch your reaction to 'Bloodlust'...
the Author - Hideyuki Kikuchi actually HATED this movie. By the time this movie came out there were maybe 3 or 4 books out. The series was gaining momentum but the Studio didn't think it was going to be a very good movie or series and they basically cut the budget in 1/2 when they produced the movie. One thing though, the MUSIC IS EVERYTHING. IT HELPED MAKE THE MOVIE IMO 1000%
Why the hell am I just barely found out you have a anime reaction channel and you saw VAMPIRE HUNTER D. 😅 anyways you’ll love bloodlust for sure. It has more…..well to put it this way…bloodlust was made with a Japanese studio but collaborated with American studio as well, with the music and story, voice actors. So….you’ll see that it’s way different than this one but in my opinion, bloodlust is better.
Wow, I haven't seen this in ages, but this doesn't seem to be the original English dub. Some of the lines seem unfamiliar to me, and the accents for a lot of characters are WAY different.
@@JnEricsonx Well, since Sentai redubbed it, and she didn't watch the Streamline dub I'm familiar with, I'm going to go ahead and assume there are some differences between the two.
I've never heard this dub before. It's really throwing me off, because I keep expecting the original English dub voices. I also didn't realize it had become hard to find these days. Here I thought I was having a hard time finding my DVD.
however it inspired even the castlevania series and the castlevania netflix series had so many from the games but in the heart it was vampire hunter d. aluard is even son of dracula and a dumpire. but the director made even ninja scroll .
Don't feel bad about not caring much for it. I don't think this holds up like other "classics" like Akira. I'd be interested in what you think of Ninja Scroll.
Demon City Shinjuku is pretty similar to this. Plot is all over the place, the art is great, and kinda ends on a "oh, that's it? We're suddenly done here?" Iria: The animation ova series was pretty good though.
Bloodlust is much better, in animation, style, voice work, music, pacing, etc. Also, the English version is the original, and it was dubbed in Japanese later, so don't worry about having to hunt down the Japanese version.
While this anime has a special place in my heart as one of the first ones I have seen. I can freely admit its not super great. It's story feels convoluted and its pacing is pretty bad. I highly recommend watching the remake they did.
oh god These dubs are not the original ones. You definitely watched the wrong version. I would suggest either not watching it with dubs or finding the version with the original dubs and re-watching the movie to cut out the cheese from it. Edit: The setting in which Vampire Hunter D takes place, the pureblood vampires are called 'Nobility.' They are also EXTREMELY powerful. The mutants are more powerful than the humans by default, and even THEY serve FAR below the vampires, yet stand above humans. The reason the Vampires even seem to keep humans around is because of their beauty and the chance for fun, and for peoples to rule over, because they originate from humans themselves. So... Yeah, their personality is entitled, but it's engrained into them. And you can't really blame them for it once they've lived for like... as they've said about him(Count Magnus Lee), 5,000 to 10,000 years and have accumulated so much wealth and power as he has.
Yeah, the first episode is spoiler heavy. The introduction "Hand of God" at the beginning of every episode is too iconic for that series to be omitted from anybodies experience with that series.
Oh man, this anime is a classic.
I watched it late night on Sci-Fi channel when I was just getting into anime.
me too, 1996 i was in highschool and this bad boy came on TV when i was home alone.
The "THIS IS A HORRIBLE WORLD TO LIVE IN" really was what everonye was thinking, in that moment.

Same thing happened to a lot of late 80's anime dubs when MANGA got the rights to redistribute them. Guyver suffered extremely badly because of this.
I didn't realize that there were multiple english dubs, this isn't the version i knew, still a classic
the most recent release opted for a new cast for reasons i don't understand. much like persona 3 reload.
I don't normally like videos, but I'm really glad someone is reacting to some obscure ones that I love like this.

however it inspired even the castlevania series and the castlevania netflix series had so many from the games but in the heart it was vampire hunter d. aluard is even son of dracula and a dumpire. but the director made even ninja scroll .
Yes this is a classic...you didn't like it? We hate you! Forever 😂 it ain't for everyone lol
You got to react to vampire hunter d blood lust movie, it got smooth 2d.
Dampire is half vampire I learned it was hard to here they say dampylye too
Don't feel bad about not caring much for it. I don't think this holds up like other "classics" like Akira. I'd be interested in what you think of Ninja Scroll.
Demon City Shinjuku is pretty similar to this. Plot is all over the place, the art is great, and kinda ends on a "oh, that's it? We're suddenly done here?"
Iria: The animation ova series was pretty good though.
I did not expect you to watch this but I'm glad u should definitely watch Bloodlust
If you want to know more about Vampire Hunter D left hand you need to watch Marvelous Anime video on it.
Vampire Hunter D - the book is better than the movie
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust - the movie is better than the book
May you see it soon!
and if you like this the fist of the northstar is even from that time.
I know you asked for anima but I am hoping you will check these out anyway. Heavy Metal, Wizards, and the animated version of The Hobbit.
Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust is literally the perfect gothic horror anime.
This one's good too but it's very 80s 😕
I hope you will watch the sequel as well.
Good reaction though, thanks for sharing.
What a terrible shame that you were subjected to the abysmal re-dub/rescript. They truly buthered a classic :(
Not really an Anime fan, but I would like to see a reaction to Tales from Earthsea, one of the only anime's that I like
Bloodlust is much better, in animation, style, voice work, music, pacing, etc. Also, the English version is the original, and it was dubbed in Japanese later, so don't worry about having to hunt down the Japanese version.
Bloodlust is not as cheesy and is a lot newer.
While this anime has a special place in my heart as one of the first ones I have seen. I can freely admit its not super great. It's story feels convoluted and its pacing is pretty bad. I highly recommend watching the remake they did.
Play playlist my first time singing reaction video I grew up watching Vampire Hunter being bloodless also do is have humans have vampire
Idk how i missed out on this.
now watch Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust
The second movie is very best
Great reaction, Bloodlust is leagues better. A true classic.
Bloodlust definitely is better love the fight scenes
oh god
These dubs are not the original ones.
Do watch vampire hunter d bloodlust. Its great.
Love your reaction, but this English dub is COMPLETELY different from the one I watched.
The original dub was from Streaming Pictures, and I agree it is the superior dub.
This isn't the original English dub.
Yea this is the 2015 dub not the 1992 ver.
❤❤❤
Sending love ❤️
D'S whut?
In my head it's hard for me not to make a "He's gonna give you that D, girl" comment every time somebody says his name in that movie.
I think part of the problem is the version you acquired. I have an English dub that is immensely better. This sounds like a low budget remake.
Also yeah this movie can feel pretty weird but the next one follows a more conventional pacing and story. Also please watch it in japanese xD
Classic
Girl, you watching the wrong dub version.
yeah dubbing in the 80s wasent to hot, bloodlust tho is way better
This not the '80s dub. This is much newer and for some reason a lot worse.
Bloodlust is much better.
You should have watched the original 1992 dub, way more gravitas. Sentai redubbed it 2015, sucks
I think Berserk series in 1997 would be right up your alley, but if you watch it I'd recommend skipping the first episode.
Yeah, the first episode is spoiler heavy. The introduction "Hand of God" at the beginning of every episode is too iconic for that series to be omitted from anybodies experience with that series.
@@parker469a thank you someone agrees for once lol. If I had a choice to watch it first time I'd skip it till the end.
Vampire hunter D : Bloodlust is far better
I hope you don't stop watching Attack on Titan. ((((
I wont!
This is really dubbed lol
the original dub is much better.
The voice dub for this version of Vampire Hunter D is pretty terrible.
HAi Veeee =)
hi!!!
Buy yea, no anime is good dubbed. Use japanese with english sub instead
vampire hunter d 2000 is better
I see it's the bad dub, sorry can't watch.
Lost me at English Dub.
