- Part 3 of the building of our first small off-grid cabin in Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula. This week we set hardware and build floor beams. Jay also makes a second attempt at using the chopping block he made last week.

Been chopping wood for years and last year bought a wood splitter- game changer! Splitting wood suddenly became fun!
Yeah. Won't take long for us to get one I imagine.
Same here. I’m in my 70s and bought a small electric splitter last year to use at our house . It’s slow but I have time. At our remote cabin I still do it by hand. I use a real heavy splitting maul to half or quarter the big stuff then a small one to finish. We have small wood stoves at both places. It’s great to see the sonotubes in the ground. The old saying “ the house is only as good as the foundation” comes to mind and your efforts will pay loff. Deck or pier blocks should only be used on decks and sheds.
@@Chris_at_Home thank you Chris. Hope I'm still splitting wood in my 70s. A big part of why we moved here and choose this life was to give us a less stressful and hopefully longer more meaningful life.
@@JayAndEleinne Welcome to Alaska. I came up here in my mid 20s. I love your attention to detail. We have an off road place I built close to 25 years ago for recreational purposes not far from Talkeetna and a home in the Meadow Lakes area. At our off road place we collect rain water in a cistern and have solar for a 48v inverter and a 12v system for lights, Rv pump and water heater. I’m changing out the inverter batteries this summer after using them 22 years.

I admire your effort! We have a wood fired central heating at home, now way would I (or any of my family) chop wood by hand, I'm so glad we have log splitters that attach to our tractor and a log saw!
In time I'm sure we'll have one.

Looking good. Using the tire does work the best. ... Make sure to spend some time every week to chop wood, you will need a big pile come winter.
Yeah it is becoming part of daily chores. Every day, chop 2 days worth of wood.

The tire method is a win.. I understand what you are trying to do to support the house with the brackets on the piers. But it seems weird that only 8 bolts can support the weight of the whole house over a long period. I'm sure that you have researched it and it works. Just never seen it done that way. Looking good and making progress. Be safe...
I have to admit I was a bit skeptical of the bolts being the only thing holding it up also. But I did research it and spoke with others that have used it. I even considered adding more washers, but then realized it's really the nut, not the washer taking the weight.

Salamat. Eleinne always talks about going to Baguio when she was a kid and how cold it was there. Haha....now she lives through Alaskan winters like it's nothing. Our next trip back is about 18 months away.

Have you thought about digging for a root cellar? Far be for me too provide you with more work but thinking about the future it might be a great idea.
Yeah great advice. Absolutely we will have one. Can't wait. But it is not in the plans for this building. When we build the main cabin it will have a walkout basement/cellar. This first cabin will only be our temporary home while we spend a few years building the main cabin. Then it will be our woodworking shop.

@@leigh7776 lol yeah. Gotta give her credit for trying. Every single tool I use she wants to try. With her hair I panic a little with power tools, but teach her the safety precautions.

I do enjoy about 20 to 30 minutes a day of splitting. It's kind of my "workout". But in the future, a splitter will be part of our homestead.
Greenwood is very hard to chop you got to let it dry some hun
Yeah, I'm finding out this the hard way. I originally was going to chop this all and try to have it seasoned by winter. But that plan is already out the window. Now we plan to buck all this, dry it, then split it and season it a year, and burn it next winter. This first winter we will burn some dead recently fallen trees we have which will probably only be 1 cord worth, and buy the rest.
