I really enjoyed your video but I think it would really enhance the informative aspect if you gave prices. When I look at similar routes, Virgin has always come out way more than BA and that is a really important aspect, what is affordable. In addition, I need to point out that a Gatwick, BA did not have a dedicated check in - you had to use the economy check in but keep up the good work and thank you!
Thanks so much and great to hear! Appreciate the input, good to know on the Gatwick check in also, surprised that’s the case! I typically don’t mention price in these types of videos as it can vary by route and when each airline is pushing deals. On the Virgin flight I flew they came out cheaper for example but do agree if there’s a significant difference often it’s well worth calling out. ✈️
As a new subscriber and fellow aviation geek, I really enjoy your all round views of both experiences and keeping it positive. Looking forward to the next one 😊
I dont usually leave comments, however, this review was exceptional. I have no faults, very in depth and straight to the point. Voice was clear and no loud music, well done and thanks for sharing. I agree virgin is always my go to airline for PE.
I'm currently in the process of arranging a 7 day trip to NYC for my 50th birthday in Feb, just got my ESTA authorized and found this video at the perfect time as I'm currently in the process of booking Premium on VA (on the Airbus A350-1000 outbound and Airbus A330-900neo return), but keep flitting between VA and BA-one of the reasons being there's currently a £1 difference in the price lol. Really well put together video and really useful. Great stuff.
So glad to hear it! Hope you have a fab trip and so good to hear the newer Virgin options are price competitive also, just makes such a difference getting the latest product with airlines. Enjoy!
That was very useful, and for me I'd choose the calf-rest seat over a real glass. Comfort is everything! Mind you, I can't see why BA don't do both, then they'd really win out 🙋♀️🤗
We have done premium economy on Virgin from London Heathrow to San Francisco twice and next year we are doing BA's premium economy from London Gatwick to Orlando for the first time. We always splurge on the premium economy seats when we go to the US because it's nice not being squished while on a 9-11 hour flight. It's also less exhausting. Great video!
great review again , definitely agree that virgin have the edge when it comes to the service. I once flew Virgin atlantic premium and went upstairs into what is known as the bubble and it was very good. maybe about 30 seats and felt very special.
@@TravelsbydreamerDid 747 bubble PE exit row to Miami several times. It was exceptionally good. Impeccable service and shared cabin with UC made it super exclusive. Great memories of some very happy flights!
I recently flew BA Premium Economy transAtlantic A380 and B777. NIce flight, good service. Sort of equivalent to EK Economy with catering below EK Economy. One way, the power socket had no power to charge my phone. The other way, the entertainment screen froze and I just watched maps. I haven't flown Virgin for many years, and am anxious to try Virgin Premium Economy in the next year, to see if I like it or not. NIce thing about BA is that in T5 with my BA Gold Status I can use First Wing check-in, security, and lounge. Also, I did get complimented by the air host both ways on my Gold Status. So, I can't say BA is a bad experience. But I am curious about Virgin, which seems to be a direct competitor on transAtlantic routes.
Really good overview! Those A380’s are in desperate need of their refurb just now. EK do really well, I’ve reviewed them on the channel but yet to compare them in their premium economy to other airlines. Agreed completely on the T5 and gold aspects. I’d definitely give Virgin a go, they’re for sure BA’s most significant competitor on the transatlantic routes I’d say 😊
Wish you had compared A350 with A350... or 787 with 787.. but very informative thanks. A350 -narrower PE seats ... widest PE is on the A330 -300 and neo..
Thanks so much! Great input on the A330. Having flown it however (older type) I didn’t notice a huge difference but would be so keek to try the new one. For me, I was keen to contrast their up to date offerings, exact aircraft perhaps a little bit more for the purists. Softer offerings such as service and food of course independent of exact aircraft type 😊
I’m planning a trip to Los Angeles next summer. I’m on a budget so I want the best value for money and so will be flying economy. Which product would you recommend more- Virgin Atlantic or British Airways? (United & American are consistently higher price so I’m not considering them). The price difference between BA & Virgin fluctuates depending on the day and it’s usually a £10 ish difference.
That’s a really good question. I’d say both fairly similar but like my thoughts on premium economy, I would just about consider Virgin at the moment. Does depend on the route however as of one airline is flying one of their newer aircraft frequently on the route that might swing my decision. Look out for availability on the Airbus A350 for both airlines, that’s typically their most up to date across both carriers.
I travelled in May from Trinidad to Gatwick with BA premium Economy on the Boeing 777 and got real glassware all the way through as well as prosecco offered as the welcome drink. The departure flight only had the Economy toilet option, which was annoying, but for the return, which seemed to be a newer plane, premium economy cabin had separate bathrooms. The food was great and lots of pre-book options for those with special dietary needs. I had the low cal menu on the return flight, and it was delicious.
Really helpful insight, thank you! One can hope the glassware is being rolled out across the fleet. I’ve always had it but sadly a good portion of the drinks then default back to paper and plastic cups. Great news about the bathrooms also, with the exception of a small number of the 747’s with a very odd layout (Premium Economy ahead of business class) I’ve always shared the bathrooms with economy. Really appreciate the comment, it’s so useful having other up to date insights from across the fleet!
How do you know if your flight has calf rests? I'm flying premium economy out of Gatwick in September and all it says on ba's website is that it's a 777.
Interesting video, maybe I should try Virgin sometime, it looks very nice. I do love the A380, which is why I always end up picking BA, I usually fly to LAX. Great video, very informative :)
That’s a great catch. Didn’t go into detail on this one as they’re really similar. From a width point of view, they run the same seat layouts. 2-3-2 on the 787 then 2-4-2 on the 777/A350. Then on the all important legroom from, both airlines feature a seat pitch of 38 inches which is fairly standard across the industry however, some are pushing beyond 40 just now 😊
Great video. I agree with you that its very closely matched, the one thing that always puts Virgin ahead for me though is reliability. BA seem to have huge amounts of cancellations and delays these days, I seem to recall a statistic that came out earlier this year that something like 5 out of every 100 BA flights is cancelled completely, and 15-20 out of every 100 is delayed at least 1 hour. I know some things are outside of their control around delays and faults but they do seem to have an abnormally high cancellation rate compared to most other airlines.
Thank you! Very interesting insight about reliability, also seems from many comments that people place Virgin as being far more consistent also. BA suffering from technical issues on the older planes just now, A380 has been a bit of a nightmare since Covid as I understand.
I fly a lot transatlantic between the UK and Tampa and I've always found the British Airways seat better when flying back to the UK overnight. The centre console is a nightmare on VA if the people in front have seats all the way back and you have to get past it, marginally more space on the BA 777 then on the 330s.
I fly regularly to Atlanta from Manchester, over the years have tried American, BA and Virgin, for the past few years now, I have settled on Virgin premium economy, I find the consistency of service excellent and I never really felt that with BA, American were okay but they stopped flying out of Manchester during Covid, I have to agree though, those premium economy pillows on Virgin are not great. Great review though, enjoyed it
Flew recently to Vancouver with BA Premium economy (A350) and it was crap, they ran out of our choice of meal both going and coming back, we could not eat the other choices. They advertise two meals, well we got none, the second meal was a wrap with choice of water or orange juice, I asked for a Diet Coke sorry we do not have one. I have a problem sitting for a long time, I booked the rear seats on the left hand side, so when we reclined our seats no one was affected. But the two in front of us reclined theirs, they went into a deep sleep, we could not get out of our seat, my wife had to climb over me to get to the loo, then again back to her seat. I was in agony my problem was due to an operation to remove cancer a few years before, eventually the woman woke up and I was able to stand. Would never fly BA again, we paid a lot extra for the Premium Economy and did not get the service they advertise.
Goodness, sounds awful. Business would probably be best budget allowing. Virgin potentially worth considering however space wise, they won’t be an upgrade sadly…
From memory I’ve heard mixed things. A quick good image search would suggest potentially not but hard to say, hopefully someone can jump in and clarify! 😊
I normally fly Virgin cos had a really bad experience when use to fly with them over 25 year. Constant delays and never returned to them apart from 10 years ago. I agree that the fact that you do not get an amenity kit on a day flight sucks and you get the same blanket as someone in Economy. But love the fact that I do not have to share the toilet with Economy, pre -drinks service. The truth is Premium Economy is Economy just a step up. I might try British Airways for places Virgin do no fly to but want to try Emirate Premium Economy also.
Yeah, Emirates are a good step up, well worth considering at the very least I’d say. I’ve got a few videos featuring them on the channel including their premium economy - hope this is useful!
Have only flown Virgin premium in the past. Though in December we will be flying BA for the first time. I do like the food choices VA has to offer but I think the quantity is way too much when you’re just sitting there for hours. After watching the video, I Personally Prefer the quantity of BA. We have an overnight flight 😍
Back in the day, First Class, Club or Economy, a video screen on the bulkhead. What you are experiencing here on both airlines is akin to business class
Yeah, I think in many ways it’s fairly akin to the business class offerings pre flat beds. Great way to travel and I think the segment will only continue to grow
Great video! I might have missed it but what’s it like when the person in front of you fully reclines? I’ve heard horror stories of being stuck in your seat on BA, but not sure about Virgin
I’ve never honestly found it to be a massive issue. The seats for sure recline at a great angle than economy which is great of course for sleeping however it does then mean they advance more into your space but with the additional legroom I’ve never found it to be a huge issue personally 😊 BA vs Virgin here very likely much of a muchness as offer the same seat pitch etc
Second service often overlaps with economy in my experience which is a real shame. Main service however is a significant enhancement in my experience on the economy offering, I’ve had some really super meals on BA premium economy. Do feel that Virgin are ahead in this area however…
BA Premium Economy is fine. For long distance we choose business class for overnight & PE for daytime. Obviously you get a lounge with Business Class. Havent flown Virgin.
Travelled to Barbados with Virgin and have to say what a decline in everything they do, 90% great but cabin dated, food awful, entertainment awful. The virgin difference used to be positive. Now, the only difference is that virgin is slightly better than Ryan Air.
@@Keepontravelling this was Virgins A350 shown and a British Airways 787-9 and 777 in the video. Bit of variety of destinations/origins in the vids shown :) As for the previous comment I’d assume that was London origin…
The Caribbean routes on virgin are mainly there older A330-300s , as it’s classed as a leisure route / ba do the same with older 777-200s on carribeqn routes “
Consistency has been a real issue for BA in my experiences in the past. I think they’re getting better just now. As you say though, Virgin seem pretty on the ball here.
I recently did Premium economy on BA this year from Canada to Heathrow, very very disappointing . I flew out economy, excellent food and good service , came back Premium, terrible service, terrible food . I wrote and complained.
One of the greatest things about flying is that one can use it as an excuse to turn your phone to flight mode and not receive annoying, worthless notifications😂 In comparison to 40/50 years go the food on aeroplanes is dreadful. One now gets over salted mircowave meals.
BA is ok if you get on the plane but four times I’ve had them try to downgrade me from business to economy. On one flight to Dubai they sold me a first class return and then told me about five days before I was due to leave. There was no first class cabin on the way back and they’re putting me on air Belgium! I have regularly flown Virgin upper class and the service, the staff, and the treatment are a million miles away from the dreadful behaviour of British Airways.
Esssh the downgrade from BA F to air Belgium (business I assume?) sounds really rough. Interesting to hear yet another comment backing Virgin for consistency. They’re quickly becoming the fan favourite here!
Great comparison review, I think we are both fans of BA but the food on offer with Virgin looked so much better, particularly the 2nd meal service. It seems as though BA are going through a cost cutting exercise again at the expense of customer satisfaction.
Thanks so much. Yeah too true, always willing BA to be better and better. As you noticed though, they really do need to up it on a number of catering aspects. Airlines make the most money from premium economy, bizarre they wouldn’t go the extra mile. Let’s see how things go as time moves on…
@@msingh9634 yeah, saw quite an interesting breakdown some time ago, was a great insight. The really premium cabins don’t generate as much as they give up so much space per seat etc
@@Travelsbydreamer I’d disagree with you on that one. I work for BA and most profit comes from Club World hence why they’re increasing the size of the Club World cabin across their newer aircraft.
@@itsdanny7502 great insight, would be keen to see the numbers. PE works so well for most airlines as they typically charge double the economy rate and give a little extra room and largely the same catering. Business whilst more expensive is a significant additional space allocation and the air tax is huge out of the UK.
Having flown LHR-SYD and back several times in BA PE on B777s, the seats and service are appalling. By the time we got to Singapore the seat was eating into my butt where the hinge for the (useless) leg rest was. Sleep became impossible. On the way back the leg to Singapore was on Qantas, which was much better. Greeted by name, bubbly in a proper glass, and a hot towel. None of which was offered on BA from SIN-LHR. Not worth the price increase over economy.

One of the greatest things about flying is that one can use it as an excuse to turn your phone to flight mode and not receive annoying, worthless notifications😂
In comparison to 40/50 years go the food on aeroplanes is dreadful.
One now gets over salted mircowave meals.
Haha yep, the flight mode can be blissful in this day and age!
Let’s see how things go as time moves on…
@@Travelsbydreamerreally? I thought Club World and First Class would generate the most revenue. I learnt from you today. Thanks!
Virgins older A330s have far superior PE seats to any other aircraft with 21 inch seat width. All the newer Virgin seats are 18.5 inches wide....
Good call out! I did the A330 a little earlier in the year also. Retro but very comfortable 😊
Very fair comparison.
BA Premium Economy looks great! Just like business class.
It’s a great way to fly for sure! Virgin Atlantic well worth a look also 😃
I assume that is sarcasm. There is a world of difference from business.
Would like to give Qantas a try in PE, always had fab experiences with them. Haven’t suffered the same fate ever on the BA 777’s thankfully!
Been twice BA premium economy it’s ok nothing special the foods was not my thing, sleeping was uncomfortable
That’s fair enough. Any other carriers you’ve tried in PE which you’d prefer?
@@Travelsbydreamer
I prefer 1st class been there comfortable bed and plenty room. Air virgin the best
@@tryphoniajones7781 oh for sure, very different price point though!
