    You have no idea how much this helped me - thank you so much. I have been trying to start in Art Journaling and everyone who teaches assume there is some knowledge already. All of the gessos are a mystery to me and it stops me from any mixed media art journaling. This was so awesome - thank you again :)

    What a great little video - so much info! Thank you. How does one know if a clear gesso that you're purchasing doesn't have the grit? Both brands that you show aren't readily available to me, so I'll need to know what to look for as this "no grit" is a real game changer! Now I'm off to see about your offering!

    I'm definitely buying some clear gesso - I want the gritty effect - are there any that do not have this? I want to avoid them.

    Great video! Really interesting to see the difference it does! I'm really new to the painting world and it was so nice to know!
    I have a few questions: Do I need to use gesso on wood as a prep? And if yes, what kind of clear gesso or brand would be better? And do I need to apply a varnish as well for a better finish?
    Thank you!

    Clear gesso can be extremely gritty and damage paint brushes if one wants to paint. But its great for using pastels

    Thank you for showing this. But I’m so confused; I have Amsterdam clear gesso, and it’s not clear at all! It really dulls the fabric and puts a white layer on the fabric. Even if I’ve thinned it with water. I thought it would be clear but it’s definitely not. Do you maybe know what? Your gesso seems very clear. 🙏🏽

    Hi! I was wondering if I can use clear gesso to create a clear transparent 3D waterdrop on a canvas, that sticks to the canvas. Do you know that by incident? 🙃
    I was also thinking of candle gel, but I don’t think it’s gonna stick to the canvas…
    Lovely video!! 🤗🧡

      Hi! I don't think that's going to work. Clear gesso is too runny, won't hold the shape. I would try a product called Glossy Accents by Ranger, it will be perfect for that. :) K.

    When would you ever mix clear & white gesso on a new canvas for acrylic paint?

    After you apply the pastels over acrylic, can you brush varnish over the painting without moving the soft pastel around?

      Hi! I found that spray fixative works best, it won't smudge the pastels. :)

  • @ant11368
    @ant11368 Год назад +1

    can you also use it on top of oil pastel or is it not compatible since it's acrylic based?

    • @EverythingArt
      @EverythingArt  Год назад

      No, the pastel will resist gesso, gesso won't adhere to pastel. If you're making some messy art in your art journal then it's worth giving it a try because who knows, the result (and the process!!) could be fun, but in theory clear gesso won't go on oil pastels.

    Do you ever use it as a glue (like collage or art journaling)? I see people doing that and it never sticks for me.

    What would you recommend to seal a drawing done over clear gesso? In particular oil based colored pencils which I use to add fine details to acrylic paintings.

    • @EverythingArt

      Hi! I've used Sennelier Oil Pastel fixative and it worked ok, so it could be worth giving it (or a similair spray fixative product) a go. :)

    Question: can I use clear gesso over oil paint and then apply spray paint or acrylic paint on top. I always hear never apply acrylic over oil. But does the clear gesso solve that issue?

    My understanding is that Matt Medium also works over glossy magazines and paints as a ground. Also Matt medium seals the pastels, making them permanent. Is there any advantage to using clear gesso instead of Matt medium for these purposes? Thank you!

    • @EverythingArt
      @EverythingArt  2 года назад +1

      Matt medium (matte gel/matt gel medium) is much more glossy (even though it's called matt) than clear gesso. Gesso will give you a truly matte surface and it's super easy to work on. Sealing soft pastels with matt medium could be tricky? Have you tried it? If the pastels are soft and dry applying a layer of any medium on top will only smudge them. Instead you could use spray fixative (or even hairspray). Have a great day! Kasia

      @@EverythingArt for oil pastel I learned that if you put Matte medium on top it won’t smudge if I put gesso on top and satin gel medium on top of the gesso would it make it scratch resistant?

    Gesso is NOT a glue, collage or paper prep medium. Gesso has GRIT and ruins paint brushes, blending brushes/sponges, pencils, pens, markers, Micron pens, Gelatos, pastels. You DO NOT need gesso to blend and or apply colour to your paper collage.
    STOP using gesso incorrectly.
    Proper application of Gesso on CANVAS involves application, SANDING, application, SANDING until the SMOOTH finish is achieved to paint on to ensure there is NO absorption.
    IT IS NOT FOR PAPER. Use the correct paper for project you want to create.
