Great review, and thanks for relating the SFL to your binocular evaluation from last year. I find myself agreeing exactly with the findings in that review each time I get to check out binos on the list, so whatever the testers were seeing, my eyes see the same thing. Doing my own test on an elk hunt this year - taking along SFL 8x40 and Swarovski EL 8.5x42 and seeing which comes out on top. With the recent decrease in EL price, I’m seeing a lot of comparisons between these two, we’ll see!

I'm very interested because I am seriously thinking of buying the Meopta Meopro Air 10x42 and since the GPO Passion 10x42 is so close to the Meopta in your '26 binocular for hunting comparison', maybe you could comment on the comparison between those two, or better yet on the Meopta. Hey there John! Yeah, the Razor UHD perform very optically! There is certainly a benefit to these lighter weight ones when weight and the compact size matters though. Thanks for watching!
Have you had the chance to test and handle the new Zeiss Conquest HDX that just started selling this week? I would love to see and hear your thoughts on them. I am interested in the 10 x 42 size.
@crimsonpearl4686 hey there! I was able to briefly look through them, but nothing extensive. If I understand correctly, they are virtually the same optically as the previous version, but have some upgraded eye cups, locking diopter, and better focus mechanism. They seemed very nice! Thanks for watching!
Hey there! I 100% agree with that. I've compared and used them both side by side and the NL Pure are better. That said, for roughly half the cost, these SFL's are pretty phenomenal. Thanks for watching!
I just pulled the trigger on the SFL 8x40's! Waiting to get them from Germany. How do they compare to the Zeiss Conquest HD 8x32? I own those. Hoping for better edge to edge clarity. Thanks!
Awesome Maxx. Let me know how you like them. I wasn't able to put these next to the Conquest HD, but these should have better edge to edge clarity based on our testing. They were excellent in that department! Thanks for watching!
I love the conquest hd 10x42. They are heavier but man they are built like a brick shit house. The hinge is incredibly rugged. These have a flimsy broken hinge in comparison with a thin front hinge. It appears like these sfls, conquest hds and even the zeiss victory rfs all use the same eyepiece design as they all have the same 345 ft fov. I'm sure everything zeiss out resolves my eyes though anyways. My conquests are awesome
Nice review on the new Zeiss SFL! Have you ever owned or used the Nikon EDG 10 x 42? Just recently picked on pair on birdform in brand new mint condition. Truly amazing optical and build quality with the smoothest, silky focus knob I have ever experienced!
Very little is said about the NIKON EDG, but there are people who consider it the best binoculars in the world. I'm confused about which one to buy. Leica Noctivid 10x42, Zeiss Victoty SF 10X42 or Nikon 10x42 EDG
@@vikinona hey there! Yeah, I haven't had the opportunity to test the Nikon EDG, but the Leica Noctivid, Swaro NL Pure, and Zeiss Victory SF (not this SFL) are the best 3 binoculars we've tested to date. These SFL are amazing, but not quite in the alpha glass category like those three. Thanks for watching!
Oh man, that's a tough one. They are ver similar in size and weight, but FOV is better in the NL as well as the edge to edge clarity. I definitely prefer the focus mechanism of the SFL, and given the massive price difference, it's hard not to go with the SFL unless money is no consideration. I'd say overall the NLs are a bit better, so if budget is no concern, they'll perform a little better. Thanks for watching!
I’m really liking what I am hearing about the Zeiss SFL? I’m looking for something lighter. smaller, as well as less expensive than my 35 oz Swarovski EL 10x50 for those trips that I want to go light as possible?
Hey there! Yeah, these Zeiss SFL should definitely fit that bill! They are excellent optically and extremely lightweight and compact. Thanks for watching!
That would be a great side by side! I do have the GPO Passion ED 10x42 and the SFL 10x30s are far superior in optical performance. The Passion ED are much less expensive, so they can't be expected to match the performance of the SFL. Thanks for watching!
Great comparison! Thank you for the review. It has convinced me to get the the Zeiss 8x32 which will offer a wider field of view. I see that you have the GPO Rangeguide. Would you please let me know how good is the glass compared to the Zeiss. I bought the 8x40 Passion ED and have been very impressed when comparing them to my Zeiss and Leica much more expensive binoculars.
Hey there Enrique and I don't think you'll be disappointed in these Zeiss SFL! The GPO Rangeguides are quite nice, and particularly lightweight and compact for a 10x32 rangefinding binocular. The glass/optical performance is not s good as the SFL, but the SFL isn't a rangefinding bino either, so not really a fair comparison. Rangefinder binos tend to offer less optically than non-rangefinding binoculars. Thanks for watching!
@@BackwoodsPursuit Thank you for your prompt response. Looking forward to the new video where you will compare the GPO Rangeguide with other rangefinder binoculars. I have the Leica 8x56 Geovid which is amazing but quite heavy, so I will like to purchase a smaller and lighter unit for hunting.
@@enriquelopez-contreras4423 absolutely! We've got quite the selection of rangefinder binos for this review, so should be able to find something to fit what you are looking for!
A nice and descriptive review. I have ordered SFL 10x30 after watching this a few times and hearing it is how close to NL 10x32 optically. However, I would like to know more about their comparison; the differences between them with regard to the contrast, resolution, CA control, and daytime brightness. I read your detailed review on the website as well. But, I couldn't extract any detail regarding those aspects. Furthermore, I would like to know your opinion about choosing SFL 10x30 or 10x40. Is there a significant difference in contrast, CA control, and daytime brightness among them? I am looking forward to receiving your kind opinions as I can still change my order and buy a SFL 10x40 or an NL 10x32. Thank you again for your nice review. Edit: Currently I have an Ultravid 10x32 HD. I really like them, however, their poor CA control makes them not pleasant to use in certain conditions. Furthermore, they are a bit dark for my liking.
Hello there! Sorry for the slow reply...I missed this comment/question. Like I mentioned in the review, the FOV of the NL is certainly better, but I actually preferred the SFL in regards to contrast and resolution. When next to the NL, the image appeared more pleasant to my eyes, and in low light, I felt like the SFL provided better resolution and color contrast as well. The weight and size of the SFL is also a huge benefit vs the NL. I have not put them next to the Ultravid, but my guess is that they would fare very well. As for the 10x30 vs 10x40, I personally prefer the 10x40 as they are more comfortable to hold when glassing for long periods of time. However, if you are looking to save weight have have a more compact size, the 10x30s will blow your mind with how small they are, and just how incredible the optical performance is, particularly for their size. You don't give up much vs the 10x40 overall. I hope that helps and thanks for watching!
@@BackwoodsPursuit Thank you so much for your very kind reply. Your review really helped me to make a decision to buy a SFL. I have received the 10x30 however, I ordered a 10x40 as well. Just like you, I preferred the 10x40 for more comfortable handling. However, I returned it because it had a small play in the focus wheel. I am waiting to receive a replacement pair. Thank you again for sharing your experience with me.
@@BackwoodsPursuit This is a quick update. I received a replacement pair for SFL 10x40 which had a bad focus wheel. The new unit had a perfect focus wheel. However, unfortunately, the replacement pair contained a lot of dust or big smudge marks on the inner surface of both objective lenses. Obviously, the view was dull due to that fact. So, I had to return it too. Then I ordered another SFL 10x40 pair from another seller. That one also has an okay focus wheel, but sometimes I feel it is too stiff and reminds me of the Habicht 10x40 I had. I hope it will loosen up with time. The new unit also has dust inside the tubes more than I am happy about. I have never worried about that issue earlier. However, I decided to keep it considering its weight and size which fit me well. I am going to use them as my primary pair of binoculars. It seems SFL really has a quality control issue at least in the lot I got my previously tested units. It is so unfortunate considering how fine binoculars they are. Maybe all the SFL units I got were customer returns. When comparing the image quality I felt like 10x30 were brighter in daylight conditions. I don't know the exact reason for that. However, I felt the image of SFL 10x40 has more contrast into it. I compared the newly received unit with my NL 8x42. As you mentioned in your review they are not far apart with image quality aspects. However, SFL 10x40 is a bit dull even in daylight conditions and it is obvious due to the magnification, exit pupil, and price differences. As far as I remember the view through SFL 10x40 is not as bright as the view through Habicht 10x40. However, I could never get along with Habichts due to uncomfortable eyecups and low eye comfort. Overall, I really like the design of SFL. One more plus point of it is the good glare resistance compared to the NL line. The FOV is also wide enough and I never felt it is too small. The eye comfort is also excellent compared to the NL. Again, thank you so much for your nice review. It made me think about the SFL purchase and it was a good choice I made. I am looking forward to seeing more optics reviews from you in the future.
@virajgunarathne9284 hey there! Thanks for the details on your experience! That's too bad you had some QC issues with the units you ordered. Glad they seem to be mostly worked out though. Thanks again!
People don't talk about the eye-box comfort enough! Thats one of the biggest factors for me in a handheld lower power bino. I hate hearing about how the optical quality of a certain model is sooooo good, then you try a pair and they're picky about perfect alignment. Ruins the experience. Could you guys do a ranking of the most forgiving and comfortable binos for hand holding? I'm not sure what the criteria would be other than subjective opinion.
From a value perspective, do you think the NL pure’s give you that much more to justify double the price of the SFL’s? I need some new binos and have basically narrowed it down to one of these two. Thanks again!
Hey there Kurt! Man, that's going to be personal needs in binos, but realistically, it's not worth double the price for most folks. If you think down the road you light wish you'd saved extra for the NL, then probably do that, but overall the SFL are a better bang for your buck for sure. The NLs are certainly better, but it's not drastic. I hope that helps!
Thank you! I'm glad the videos are helpful. Of the $1,000 price range, our team preferred the Zeiss Conquest HD. Feel free to check out our full review here: backwoodspursuit.com/26-best-binoculars-for-hunting/ Thanks for watching!
Hello! I'm about to upgrade my GPO Passion ED, and I already have 2 bins in my mind: The SFL 8x40 and de Leica Ultravid 8x42, I know they are two total different bins, but I wonder which one has the better optics. It's going to be my "end-game" bin and need to last like 10 years at least.
Hey there Roger! I haven't yet had the opportunity to test out the Leica Ultavid, so I can't say for sure how the two compare. I was however extremely impressed with these Zeiss SFL binos. They are a very very good value and exceptional performance. Thanks for watching!
Hey there! We didn't put these side by side with the Razor HD, but have tested those in the past. We did put these next to the Razor UHDs though since they are in the same price class, and I'd personally take the SFL. The Razor UHD were slightly better in low light, but every other category the SFL was better. Given that the Razor HD came in behind the Zeiss Conquest in our big binocular comparison, and the Razor UHD provided best in class optics(prior to the SFL), I'd expect you'd see a nice improvement over the Razor HD with the SFL. Thanks for watching!
Hey there, Andrew! That's a great question, and one that's going to be difficult to answer since these weren't out when we tested those side by side, but I did have a chance to put these next to the Vortex Razor UHD(which was the optical leader in the $1500 class). I preferred these over the Vortex Razor UHD in everything but the lowest light situations. The massive weight and size savings of the SFL would push me to them for hunting purposes. However if you don't care about weight or size, and low light performance is the most important to you, the Razor UHD were a little better in low light. I did prefer the SFL in every other lighting situation though, so that combined with the minimal gain the Razor UHD give you in low light (its very minimal), I'd personally rank them above the Razor UHD overall, which would put them #1 in their respective price category. Thanks for watching!
Hey there! Yeah. I've used 10x with one hand. It's definitely doable hut obviously going to be better with 2 hands. I do a lot of bow hunting as well. Thanks for watching!
Hello, the focus wheel looks low on these, like it's in the middle of the binoculars, is this a problem? Looks awkward to use your first finger for focusing?
Too bad you didn't compare the SFL with the Swaro CL. That would have been the right comparison. The CL costs the same as the SFL. (The NL is twice as expensive), almost the same weight. I'm sure Zeiss released the SFL as a competitor to the CL. The comparison would be very interesting.
Hey there! Personally, I preferred the SFL 30mm and 40mm over the NL Pure 32mm...and The NL Pure 42mm are my favorite binos. I felt like the SFLs offered better low light and very similar resolution to the NL 32s. The NLs have a larger FOV and better edge to edge clarity though. Thanks for watching!
@@BackwoodsPursuit thanks for your reply, great reviews on your channel. I'm looking for the best bino which is lighter than the 42mms, as I carry a scope too 👍, the sfls are not quite as good as the victory 42mm are they?
Hi, i have the NL Pure 8x42. And Zeiss Victory Pocket 8x25. I want to add an extra mag. Do you recommend a 10x30 (or 32) or is that not logic? Or a 12x42 NL?
Hey there! Either of those are fantastic. Surprisingly thought, my eyes preferred the SFL 10x30s over the NL 10x32. The NLs are better in edge to edge as well as offer a larger FOV, but otherwise the price point and other optical performance features went to the SFL. Thanks for watching!
Hey there! That's a great question. I'd say if you can swing it, you'd be happy you did, but as you probably know, the gains you'll get aren't massive. Thanks for watching!
Hey there! Yes, I would definitely consider these to be better than the Conquest HD. The Conquest HD are great as well, but these offer better performance and are lighter weight. Thanks for watching!
Hello, can you comment on how the smaller 30s handle and if the focus wheel is too far forward? Is it more comfortable focusing with your pointer or middle finger?
Hey there Johnny! Yeah, the focus wheel on the 30s can be used with either finger, but it's probably best with your middle finger. Either way worked fine for me though...but I prefer my index finger. Thanks for watching!
@@BackwoodsPursuit Thank you for the quick reply. What about the eye box of the 30s? Would you say they're about as forgiving as the 40s? Would I be giving up anything on the 30s aside from slightly worse low light performance?
@@johnnyliuphoto I didn't notice any difference in how forgiving the eye box was between the two. The 30s actually have a larger field of view (345 vs 360 in the 10x version. Otherwise they are extremely similar!
At less weight I would argue that the sig zulu6 20x42 binos out class these by a long shot! And they come in at a much lower price! But nobody in the industry wants to talk about them because they'll put old school optics out of business.
Stabilized bino are certainly interesting! We've been using/testing the Sig Zulu 6 and Kite APC stabilized binos for the last 6+ months, and the the stabilization certainly makes a massive difference. There are absolutely some compromises that go along with stabilized binoculars, though, which some folks will be OK with, and others not. The weight difference of these SFL and Zulu 6 is about 0.7 ounces, so not significant, but the stabilization is pretty amazing. The FOV is massively smaller and the low light performance not as good in the stabilized, but price point of the stabilized binoculars is much better like you said. Give and take! Thanks for watching!
Hey there Tanner! I didn't have the Swaro Companion CL to put them side by side, but given how favorable they compared to the NL Pure 10x32, I would imagine they would be better than Companion CL. Thanks for watching!
Hey there Mazen! I didn't have the Conquest in hand to test next to these new SFL, but I would guess the SFL would be better than the Conquest without question given how close the SFL was to the top performer of the $1500 category of the ones we tested in our big review from a year ago. I'll have to try to get the Conquest side by side with these SFL though. Thanks for watching!
Hey there! The SFL is made in Japan according to Zeiss. They stated that this was to help keep the cost down while still maintaining excellent performance. Thanks for watching!
Hey there Martin! I can't say how they compare to the Swaro Companion as I've not put those two side by side. I'll see what I can do though. Based on how favorable these SFLs compared to the NL Pure in the 10x30, I'd guess they would do well though. Thanks for watching!
thank you for your reply. Would be nice, if you guys can make a video about small binoculars like 8x30 and 8x32. I am sure a lot of guys prefer them for hunting more than bigger ones.
@@GM-bq6zo hey there! I can say for sure on that as I haven't put the two side by side, but given how favorably they compared to the Swaro NL Pure, I'd say so. Thanks for watching!
Hey there Peter! Yeah...amazing glass! Not my favorite eye covers either, but I typically never use them anyway....binos go in my harness, so not an issue for me personally. But, if you are one who uses them...I agree. Thanks for watching!
The Kowa Genesis 8X33 and 10X33 have a locking diopter. Same optical performance as Zeiss or Swarovski at much less cost a hidden gem quality binocular made in Japan. Why Zeiss cannot make a locking diopter but keeping costs high is not worthy of Zeiss quality only to cut costs for max profit having a non-locking diopter is unacceptable. For such an expensive binocular.
Thanks for the feedback, Mark. Yeah, I'm a huge fan of Kowa as well! I've not used the 33mm Genesis, but have tested the 44mm extensively. Great binos! Zeiss indicated to me that the locking diopter is something that hunters typically want, but birders do not, so they try to meet both needs with a stiffer mechanism. Personally though, I'm also in the locking diopter camp. Thanks for watching!
Look at the official Zeiss Brochures for the USA there it is stated that these have field flatteners. Here in Germany it is also stated that these binoculars have field flatteners.
@@Kra3uter thanks for confirming....I was also informed by Zeiss directly that they do have a field flattener, but I'll also double check that to be sure. Thanks for watching!
Hey there! I just double checked(want to make sure we are getting correct info out there), and information on the Zeiss website, as well as Zeiss representatives state that both the SF and SFL have the Zeiss Field Flattener Technology. Thanks for watching!
The position of the focuser in relation to its size on the 30, looks like a bad position for the index finger, almost like the two center fingers would fall on the focuser. Also the 40 I tried definitely didn’t have a flat field, if theres a field flattener, it doesn’t work.
@@Paultricounty thanks for the feedback back! We didn't find the focus wheel position on the 30 to be a problem, but, but I'm sure it won't work for all folks. Thanks for watching!
Ask yourself this. Why are roof prism binoculars so expensive? Answer: more expensive to manufacture, more glass elements, more precision needed. Porro prisms are just better. There's no astronomical Roof prism binoculars. They can't gather enough light. So.. why buy £2000 binoculars? Answer: Status! Its just marketing bs.
@@BackwoodsPursuit No roof prism binoculars are a gimmick. Flat view. Not 3D like porro prism binoculars. Don't believe the hype. Yes they're lighter. But no way superior.
@@kerryfry1857 I'll have to snag some porro prism binos and compare. We tested a ton of roof prism binos already. I'd be curious to put them side by side. The durability challenge of porro prism binos is a concern for backcountry hunting where the terrain can be rough... Another consideration.
@@BackwoodsPursuit Don't be silly.. binoculars are light buckets. Roof prism binoculars, are not as well able to work under low light. Too much glass. I'm sorry.. marketing is bad for truth.

I would have liked to have seen how well the SFL 10x30 compared to the GPO Passion ED 10x32.
@virajgunarathne9284 thanks for the info and please share your thoughts once you have e a chance to test them out! Thanks again!
Hey there! Yeah, the eley box forgiveness is a big factor in using binos for sure. That's a great review idea! Thanks and thanks for watching!
Oh...and I will say that in my humble personal opinion, these SFLs have the most forgiving eye box I've ever tried of the many we've tested.
@@BackwoodsPursuit Awesome, that's a huge compliment to those SFL's since they're already getting rave reviews for clarity and ergonomics!
@@AB.284 absolutely! Yeah, they are quite impressive all the way around.

I have the regular Vortex Razor HD's 10x42. Just a tab bit heavier than the 10X40 SFL. How do those compare if you guys had a chance to look at both?.
Thanks for watching!

if you had to add these to the 26 bino review (make it 27) where would they rank? what place?
Curious if you tested the 10x single handed?
I'm looking for a pair to take bow hunting. Everyone recommends
Hey there!

Does the SFL 40mm have better 3d effect than the flat image of the swarovski el?
Hey there! You know, I'd have to put them side by side and compare that aspect to really give you and accurate report. Sorry! Thanks for watching!
Thanks Rod....I'll have to see if I can get some Swaro CL to compare. Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching!
I think SFL will kill CL
How does the 40mm sfl compare to the 32mm nl pure? There will be more eye comfort in the sfls. But what about brightness and resolution? Thanks
Hey there! Personally, I preferred the SFL 30mm and 40mm over the NL Pure 32mm...and The NL Pure 42mm are my favorite binos. Not expecting a response but would you consider these much better than the conquest hd?

Do these out perform the Swarovski cl companions for 10x30 size?

Which are brighter this SFL 10x40 or conquest hd 10x42?
Hey there Mazen! I didn't have the Conquest in hand to test next to these new SFL, but I would guess the SFL would be better than the Conquest without question given how close the SFL was to the top performer of the $1500 category of the ones we tested in our big review from a year ago.
