In this video I react to the shocking reality of Ebbw Vale, a town that's earned the notorious title of being the fattest town in Britain. With a staggering 80% of its residents classified as overweight or obese, and an overwhelming number of takeaways in every direction, the extent of the issue becomes evident.
Located in the south Wales area of Blaenau Gwent, this region holds the highest obesity rates in the entire country. The fact that four out of five people here are overweight or obese not only puts a strain on the local health service but also solidifies its position as Britain's fattest Borough. Join me as I delve into the concerning realities of this obesity epidemic.
Thanks for watching. If you enjoyed this reaction please give this video a thumbs up, share your thoughts in the comments and click the subscribe button to follow my journey to learn about my British and Irish ancestry.

Many of the kids these days eat crap, don't play outside and don't walk to school.
You could say they've been Americanised.
That's exactly what's happened. We fell under the spell of McDonald's, Burger King and KFC and Hey Presto we're fat as fuck like the Yanx.
@@atorthefightingeagle9813 I have another example to add to that list of American chains. In a few days the town I live in is getting a branch of Popeye's - an American chicken restaurant that I had never heard of in this country before seeing videos on life in America over the last year or so. I can't wait for all the reports of salmonella poisoning...
@@jameslewis2635 never heard of it either. How many chicken shops do we need? It's all pretty much the same.
Well done to the lady thats lost 13st or 182lbs for the Americans, that is such an achievement!
Yeah, that's quite an accomplishment--a lot of hard work and dedication.
Thought you managed the Welsh valley accent very well!
@@OneTrueScotsman I think 25 kg in five months is impressive too. I'm sure you reach your goal, just give it some time.
Researchers say foods high in vegetable fat can help lower your stroke risk while foods high in animal fats can increase it. Experts recommend eating more plant-based foods as well as seafood and whole grains. They also recommend reducing the amount of red meat
I used to weigh 35 stone. Over 2 1/2 years I’m down to just under 21. I have a long way to go but I’m slowly getting there.
I don’t blame anyone but myself.
You are an inspiration.

You are doing brilliantly! I am in awe of your success....
That's amazing! You should definitely be proud of yourself, because losing weight is hard work.
Well done , keep going 👏.
Good grief, imagine having a kebab every day 🥴
Bad enough on a Friday night after the pub lol
Dripping with fat and grease. Ofnadwy! ( Awful!)🤮🏴
Fat people make excuse after excuse, you are a product of the lifestyle you choose to live.
I have been over weight, I lost 5.5st 8 years ago and have remained fit ever since, I do hard exercise every day without fail, if you really care about being fat then you will do something about it.
I have a dad bod, i.e just a bit of a belly, and i'm 'over weight' by BMI standard.
I weigh just more than I should for my height, i'm about 10 pounds over.
when i didn't have a belly, i was just on the fringes of over weight and i was an unhealthy looking stick.
BMI isn't always accurate for every body type.
Yes, it's only a part of the picture, for sure.
Kebab, not kebob 😉
There are other reasons why people can be overweight, some could eat less than a skinny person but put on weight
I used to know a woman who told me she had dropsy (now called edema), which is a water retention condition, she was huge with swollen legs and arms.
Overweight people might also be in the middle of a weight loss program, if you don't know them don't judge, like in the case of the woman on the beach.
I've driven through Ebbw Vale several times & it felt like a ghost town. It was honestly DEAD, the buildings are old industry worker homes and they're dreary looking places. For reference, 13 stone is 182lbs. 14 lbs in a stone.
Shame. It's a beautiful area, my mum's side of the family come from crickhowell which isn't far from Ebbw Vale, we used to spend a lot of time down there until my last Welsh relative died about 5 years ago
It does look like beautiful scenery there!
Fast food is a fairly new phenomenon in the UK, the past 20 or 30 years. It seems to be the worst culprit !
Fast food has been available in the UK wherever I was for my whole lifetime and I am 45. The big difference is that rather than having a one or two shops in an area like a Pizza Hut, a McDonalds and chip shop in a small town, these days the variety is massive and they are everywhere. The latest trend to make things worse IMO is how easy delivery apps make ordering these foods. When I was a kid I would have to walk down to pick up my order, these days you order with an app and a bit later it arrives at your door making it not as much of an easy option as opposed to knocking something up in the kitchen. This also means that people are not even getting that little exercise. Then add how cheap (relatively) it has become to keep some kind of motorized transport (from e-bikes that you don't need a license for through to cars) and it is easy to see how people are simply not burning off the calories as they once would - and that's without factoring in how things have changed in regards to our working lives.
it is not actually fast food that is to blame it is how it is cooked. vegetable oil thought to be healthy is now being proven to be harder for you body to digest and causes much more to be laid down as fat deposits whereas animal fats are much easier to metabolize (saturates are not bad if controlled transfats however are deadly).
@@Adrian-kj3uc Fast food is always going to be the worse option. Have you seen how many calories & fat there are in a pizza for example? 1,000 for an average shop bought pizza, then add chips, fizzy drinks. The average kebab contains 2,000 calories. Then there's the latte coffees that no one used to drink 30 years ago, instant coffee has 2 cals, latte up to 300 cals. Our eating habits have been transformed over the last 30 years.
Fish and chips has been around a long time. A great-grandfather of mine put his job down in the 1911 census as a "purveyor of fired fish and chipped potatoes". Chinese takeaways became popular in the 70s. The range has expanded but it is not new.
Much more interesting reaction and topic than I first thought, Steve, Good job 👍
I think one of the guys he interviewed hit the nail on the head:
He said "We're in a deprived area, and cheap food is fatty food" - A HUGE part of the problem -actually scrap that -the MAIN part of the problem when it comes to issues like these are areas of *socioeconomic depravity* with less access to affordable healthy food and practices around healthier food and lifestyles. The Mines and jobs shutting down in combination with cheap fast food is a recipe for what we see in this video. The same can also be said about many problems related to socioeconomic depravity, such as crime, unemployment, life expectancy, etc.
(But certain folks and politicians are too quick to be *hyper-individualistic* and would rather immediately judge the sole person without ever thinking about social and environmental conditions ever playing a part in the health and behaviour of a person or peoples. It's so much easier for them to blame the person/peoples themselves without ever acknowledging the reality of what could be done to help!)
There are too many fast food (junk food) outlets around these days. When I was a youngster they didn't exist, apart from fish and chips, and the odd Chinese takeaway.
I agree, there are too many fast food shops around. I can’t understand how people can afford to eat expensive takeaways when they’re all out of work, home cooked meals are cheaper to make especially if you have children to feed.
yep, as a child mum cooked real food every day, I even went home for lunch as we lived nearby, unfortunately times have changed and I had to work when my daughter was growing up so she had school dinners or a packed lunch but she always had a home cooked meal in the evenings at a fraction of the cost of takeaways
Great thought process on reasons behind why this town has issues with weight. I really enjoyed your take on this.
Thanks! Appreciate you watching.
Sheesh! I can understand restrictions on promoting unhealthy foods but dictating what people can and can't buy is a bit much!! Do they just mean they'll be scrapping meal deals? Or removing certain items from the meal deals? Knowing Mark Drakeford it will probably mean you have to stand on a set of scales before you can buy a chocolate bar.
@SmearCampaignUK 😂😂 Thank goodness I no longer go to Wales very often! That 20mph nonsense is crazy! We have a 20mph limit on the small back streets round here but no one takes much notice of it, most people don't go mad and do 60 but they definitely don't stick to 20
@SmearCampaignUK I would be getting road rage for sure! Drives me mad round here when someone sticks to dead on 20 😂 I just can't do it, it feels unnatural to drive that slow for some reason. I've even had police right behind me, I tried and tried to stick to 20 and couldn't do it
Obesity in the UK has been linked to the fast food industry which started in the '80s. Before that people were slim & cooking from scratch & not many processed foodstuffs were available as supermarkets were hard to come by. Red & processed meats are linked to bowel cancer with white meat & fish being the healthy option. To eat 3 kebabs a week is a lot (let alone every day) if they're eating the red meat. I found this a hard watch as it appears these people would be financially better off & much healthier if they had takeaway as a treat - not as their staple diet. The exercise class appears to be a godsend & I'm really happy for those people who are so doing well. The cruel bullies are a disgrace & should feel nothing but shame.
Something not a lot of peoppw acknowledge is, yes the uk is pretty damn overweight... but you almost never see insanely overweight people. Like the people on mobility scooters that have tv shows about them. We just have a lot of somewhat overweight people
morning Steve, Here we have the perfect storm, my town for instance is dead, proper shop are gone so fast food shops and charity shops move in, all to do with online shopping also during lockdown those who were lucky to be working was mainly working from home, those who are working now are under a lot of pressure compared to my day, they employ fewer staff to do the same work, so many just grab what they can on the way home rather than cook a meal, as you know we are a drinking nation so those who can afford it may drink heavy not all may I add, when i was growing up we could not afford cars so we walked or biked everywhere,
13 stone - what the lady had lost - is 182 pounds ( a stone is 14 pounds - in the UK we talk about our bodyweights in terms of stones and pounds) She has done amazingly!
I cannot understand people who think they can judge others- for whatever reason- when thy know little or nothing about them! My family has recently experienced the upset of someone coming over to us to give unsolicited 'advice' (which was basically criticising us for something they understoood nothing about) - not relating to weight, but something else entirely, but it's just not on!
Weight is something far more complex than some people would like to think. If yo are blessed with a high metabolism, are able to live an active day-to-day life, and can afford the healtiest food, then you probably have no idea what it's like not to have those things.
You are judging those people for judging though. Maybe they can't help it. 🤷
@@c_n_b Maybe the fact that they are judgemental isn't entirely their fault - it's the way they have been brought up, or what they've experienced - but there is no excuse for expressing that judgement in hurtful ways to complete strangers!
Ebbw Vale ISN'T the only place in the UK that has GP prescribed exercise classes. I know because I go to one every Thursday morning and I live in Scotland. (I should add that I go because of disability that means I need modified exercises).
They live among beautiful countryside and mountains. There's really no excuse for not keeping in shape. Go for a walk for gods sake.
Love Wales best countryside in the world in my book.
I personally think bmi should be used as a loose guide at best. Look at most rugby players, they will undoubtedly be classed as overweight or obese but clearly they will be much healthier and fitter than your average person. My bracket for healthy would be between 8 stone something and 11 stone something. I can honestly say i would look dreadful in the 8-9 stone weight. I'm quite tall for a women with broad shoulders and not much of a waist. I judge my body on weight, how i feel in myself and clothes size. People shouldn't fixate on an arbitrary number on a graph.
@noggintube You make a reasonable point, but I'm not really sure why you've replied to me specifically as nowhere did i state it shouldn't be used at all. I was talking on an individual basis, 'people shouldn't fixate on an arbitrary number'. Unfortunately, though, people do, and doctors very much judge patients by their bmi, further reinforcing it. I've had a gp state it as a reason for why I have psoriasis! 😐 If you want a snapshot of an entire town or region then fine, but on a person to person aspect, it's often worse than useless. An anorexic person could well have a bmi in the 'healthy range' but I would be considered far healthier in every other metric even though mine is probably in the obese category.
@noggintube it was my opinion in regard to the individuals watching this video and people in general...I doubt the minister for health or the director of my local hospital is watching this video for tips. They were also talking to individuals regarding their own weightloss. I've stated several times now that it's only really useful on a large scale. If you're still not getting that, then it's on you.
@noggintube hahaha aggressive 😂that's your idea of aggressive? It's alright, I realised after your first comment that you were being deliberately obtuse and argumentative, so let's agree that you don't bother replying, and I'll not bother checking this farce of a thread again. 😉
Food is not necessarily cooked in seed oil in UK.
Try telling your Doctor that they should take the BMI measurement with a pinch of salt!
Infact they will start by telling you to cut out the salt, then cut out the fat , then cut down your processed meat & other foods, then red meat only 3 days a week!
I eat home cooked meals from scratch, minimal fat, lots & lots of fruit & veges & salads, minimal meat, no salt & still they say i should eat a healthy diet.!
In the UK, rapeseed oil is the most used oil. Otherwise known as vegetable oil. Also, sunflower oil but palm oil is creeping into lots of ready prepared food
Meat isn’t healthy, you can tell because it tastes so good
80%! 😯 I've just checked my local area for reference and round here it's 19.5% and even round here I often sit in the car waiting for my kids to come out of school and there are so many very overweight people compared to when I was a kid. We had maybe 1 chubby kid in our class, now there are loads coming out of the school.
It's 11.9 percent in my area. Thought it would have been higher tbh 😂
@@101steel4same! I thought round here would have been higher too
yes you are right we had one chubby child in my class of 32,
One of the big differences I have noticed with kids, when you pass an area of grass, you dont see children playing football outside.
As a child in the 70s, we played a game of football most nights.
@@pauldurkee4764 the kids still do round here, obviously weather permitting. There is a favourite spot for kids where my son used to have a kick around 20 odd years ago and the kids still play there, it actually has a big sign up saying No Ball Games, the kids tell their parents 'we're playing footy on the no ball games field'
Plus we've got a local field with a little patch of trees in the middle, there must be a dozen dens built in there made of all sorts of discarded stuff. Maybe the kids round here are just feral 😂
We have an epidemic of obesity in this country just like that States. America still shocks me when I visit cos it’s off the scale, but we are well on our way to meeting you.
Just a little clarification, a pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat. So contrary to popular belief, muscle does not weigh more than fat.
I think one of the main issues is routines. I find using an exercise bike whilst watching RUclips or TV at the end of the day allows exercise and fun at the same time. A slight change in routine may help without it feeling too difficult
I totally agree!
Too much food, massive helpings. Can't eat 5000 calories and then sit in a chair, could if willing to work it off. Having said that BMI has to be replaced with something that works so no excuses about big bones etc. At 6'2" with a very active job, cover 50 mpw and some heavy lifting I am apparantly morbidly obese. We need something accurate and then targets set or penalties paid for health care etc If obese.
Always great video's, but , please google more (learn )weights ,meters vs mi., pounds vs dollar, you have more insight.
I read a study that found that in terms of activity levels & food intake, in Britain at least, little has changed since the 1970's. You saw very few obese people in Britain even as recently as the 1980's & diabetes in this country was virtually non existent 100 years ago. What has changed is WHAT we eat, not how much.
That said, whilst the causes may be open to debate, the solution to weight gain remains constant- eat moderately & eat healthily. Crucially this needs to be taught at an early age as poor eating habits are *learned* & once learned they become virtually hardwired & very hard to break. The statistics for the overweight are not good, the vast majority who lose weight put the weight back on.
It's like any other destructive habit, it needs to be addressed before it becomes a problem. Once it is a problem you're usually fighting a lifelong battle, be it food or alcohol.
Here a video of an Australian couple trying a full English, scones, fish and chips and a Sunday roast. I thought it might answer a few of your questions with a little more detail from some of your other videos you’ve posted. 👍🏻

One of my old mates (a Muay Thai World Champion), used to have a sign by his door...
It said: Never mind the f*cking dog, Beware The Owner! With a picture of him with Championship Belts in Thailand.
My uncle came from Scotland to North America and couldn't believe how large the portions of food were. Calories should be on menus and besides fast food in the food board.
If people haven't got a job, how do they afford takeaways 7 days a week?
Benefits
Yeah some benefits are pretty good! A friend of my partner is morbidly obese, he's got anxiety problems, physical problems (caused by his obesity) he gets top PIP benefits, plus his rent, CT etc all paid. His wife is also morbidly obese and gets pip too, both his kids are obese and 1 is autistic so the wife gets carers allowance for the kid, they are pretty well off financially.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing people on benefits at all, I know some people are on them for no fault of their own and don't get enough to get by on. My own father in law was proper scammed by DWP, he worked all his life in pretty high paying jobs £80-100k per year so paid a lot of tax and NI , he got made redundant at 64yo and signed on for the first time in his life, he knew he wouldn't get a job at his age and was just waiting for his pension. He got 90 quid a fortnight for 6 months then they cut him off with nothing despite all the contributions he's made over his life.
Some people just know how to work the system and they're better off than in a full time minimum wage job
Exactly, they are not cheap options.
The more unhealthy you become the more likely you are to be entitled to sickness/disability benefits.

We say it Ke-Bab, instead of 'bob'. A lot of people usually go to them after a a night out drinking etc.. greasy kebab afterwards.
I still use butter, and I cook with lard (made from animals).
A friend of mine who is a recovering alcoholic was always blown away with my weight loss journey because despite his additiction he actively considered my food addicition / eating disorder worse than his alcoholism. He said it was much easier to avoid alcohol triggers than food, and its "not like you can go cold turkey from food" which always inspired me to really see how difficult food addiction is in this current era.
A stone is 14lbs.
It is a Fact that with most People who can't get a Job go into a depression. You make Phone calls, write letters and go everywhere you can looking for work. When you finally realise it is pointless doing all that you have no choice but to sit at home. That is when the depression starts and because of that you eat more. Sooner or later the Medical Problems start.
You Sir, are a gentleman!
If people aren't working but living on benefits how do they afford take-aways?
Often better off on benefits. There's a reason a many don't want to move to where the work is at 😉

Yes as it would make them sound lighter too 😂
I’ve been working in Ebbw Vale for the past few months, conducting pretty in-depth surveys, mostly for government departments. My impression is it’s bouncing back. Most I’ve interviewed are working and housing is pretty affordable. Transport links are also pretty good and the people I’ve met are probably the most friendly of all the areas I’ve worked.
Glad to hear this!
People have to take responsibility for their actions. If you eat too much food with too many calories, you get very fat over the long term. Why you do it is your business, but you're responsible for your size. Addictions exist and that's the individual's responsibility to overcome, it's not a free pass to be a powerless victim automatically deserving of sympathy and force society to tend to your every need.
Yes totallt agree you what you I thanks an undercover BBC They aired about 5 year ago most Hotels are filthy in the kitchen put me off I love Home cooked food its worhy waiting for a nice meal.Greeting from LONDON

plenty of work out there .......
That's the problem. They can sit back and live a comfortable life on benefits, and often better off than working.
Seed oils and vegetable spreads came in as a health option in the early 80's. The same time the obesity epidemic started. I am sure that is no coincidence. Also swapping fat for sugar in "diet" foods has does the opposite of helping.
BMI does not take in to account, bone density, muscle or height. When a very fit athlete was told he was obese that’s when I questioned the chart they use. No one person is exactly the same as another so how can one size chart fits all be used. We all know when we have put on weight by the clothes we wear. If you have to go up or down more that two clothes size that should be a wake up call. I agree it’s the food we now eat. I was taught in school about food and how to cook it, both boys and girls got these lessons once a week. I never had a pre prepared meal while growing up. Either of my parents took turns in cooking meals. At weekend us kids did it. It was fun. Now I know how to budget for my food shopping, for that last ten years I’ve only had to raise my monthly budget recently. I shop once a month as that’s how I am paid. Going weekly makes you spend more.
@@cannyexplorer5357 I thought it was only me that shops one a month. I can easy get a months worth of real food that lasts when freezing. As for BMI, I have a 30 inch waist and am considered over weight.... it is just a basic guide.
Agreed ish I'm not replacing sunflower oil for lard anytime soon
@@noggintubebut the food you eat effects your metabolism and satiety which therefore effects how easy it is to eat the correct amount of calories to maintain or lose fat. Also yes if you don't overeat McDonald's won't make you gain weight but that doesn't make it balanced in terms of nutrients which would have a toll over time as his body ran out of stored vitamins and built up fat related health issues or issues to do with the body not being able to repair itself as efficiently. Which would eventually make you crave something nutritious but if you aren't in the habit of cooking your own food you'd just interpret those signals as craving more fast food.
Hi Steve. You are correct in what you say about it being where you live in the UK and the lifestyle.
In the area I live in, though it's surrounded by countryside, the town itself is almost completely reliant for it's economy on industry and manufacturing.
In the industrial environment I work in we eat a lot of junk food. Some people will eat more than one takeaway a day. This is due the the heavy manual nature of the jobs in the area whereby we burn/sweat off thousands of calories in a 12 hour shift doing "hot work" in heavy fire proof overalls. We also consume a lot more water than normal to keep hydrated but we also drink a lot of bad things like lucozade and energy drinks to keep our sugar levels up in order to keep lethargy away.
Many of these towns where obesity is so bad are located either in the north of England or in Wales because this is where such a high percentage of our industrial and manufacturing or former industrial and manufacturing towns are clustered. They are home to higher unemployment rates, lower wages and jobs that don't need any qualifications to get. Towns like mine also suffer from less government investment and poor or no public transport infrastructure so the personal motor car is the only option when you have to be at work for 5.30am. These are what are called deprived towns here in the UK and my hometown ranks almost in the top third of England's most deprived towns. This is why there is such a big north/south divide here in England which is something you might want to check out.
Appreciate your explanation--I'll have to take a look at your suggestion :)
Interesting, as I recently found out that the the universal assumption that Scotland had the most obese population in the UK was not true. When I was growing we didn't have an obesity problem, because we burnt off so much energy just working, travelling and keeping ourselves warm. In the days before central heating, and travelling everywhere in overheated cars.
Still however, walk around most British towns and there are more slim people than fat !
Back in the 60s/70s, if you had a house with coal fires, cutting kindling, carrying coal, chopping logs, I remember cleaning out the grate and laying the fires in the mornings at my grandparents.
In a lot of ways life is comfortable today, perhaps a bit too comfortable.👍
I got up in an unheated house and walked a mile to and from school. No matter how cold it was, to save sixpence on the bus fare. I ate a full school dinner and stodgy pudding, and a cooked "meat and 2 veg" dinner every night. Spent my bus fare and pocket money on sweets and crisps. So I was as thin as a rake at the time. @@pauldurkee4764
It isn't that Scottish people are obese, as much that we have an unhealthier lifestyle, Scottish men are among the shortest life expectancies in the UK with some areas of Glasgow the life expectancy being as low as 66.
13 stone? How was she still alive? There would be nothing left of me if i lost that. I have to admit, I went to Wales a couple of years ago in Cardiff and my husband and I immediately noticed how many young people there were so over weight. We noticed a big drink culture in Wales. I disagree with the poverty excuse. I live in Cornwall - one of the poorest areas in Britain since the tin mines closed. The obesity rates here are very low. There are not many takeaways here that’s why.
13 stones is the average weight of a healthy male adult, 182lbs
I honestly didn't know it was Ebbw Vale.
You can't judge overweight people for over eating.......some might have thyroid problems which a couple of friends I had who unfortunately have died
I don't think people should be directly bullied for their weight, bullying is always wrong, however obesity shouldn't become a normalised thing that everyone accepts either, at the end of the day at least 98% of the time it's personal choice, you choose to eat 10 mc Donald's a day or 3 kebabs a day etc, no one is forcing it down their throats.
Small amounts of overeating each day add up. I know you probably were just being hyperbolic 😅 but fat people don't eat 10 McDonald's a day. I think however well meaning ignorant healthy eating "advice" just leads to more mental health issues and eating disorders like binge eating or people hiding what they eat.
As someone who used to live in this town, I am shocked. I do not remember an overwhelming number of takeaways, or a large amount of obese people. But I did move away from this town around 9 years ago, so maybe it changed.
I live in Telford, Shropshire the Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution
A lot of hard industry involved
Sadly the area I’m in now has the highest level of childhood obesity in England
We’re far more reliant on cars, rather walking and cycling or catching the bus to work. So far less day to day physical exercise.
Hi Steve, have you heard of Britain's nuclear bomb development and testing site on a spectacular shingle spit at Orford, Suffolk in East Anglia England? A region sadly neglected by responders!
US has gone from 30% obese to 39,6% obese over the last 20 years. Then add around 31,6% overweight and 7.7% is severely obese (Morbid obese). I myself are Obese so im not judging anyone.
It's so sad that a lack of places of employment is the issue here. A condition brought on by political choices.
Just so you know, GP (General Practitioner) referrals are available in London, too. You can get a GP referral for most medical conditions. It's all free and most council funded leisure centres will allow all inclusive access to their facilities.
They are also now providing reduce cost access for people and families on low wages.
Why are they still using BMI? It’s not an accurate way of measuring obesity because it doesn’t take into account bone and muscle density.
I once knew an international rugby player, according to his BMI he was morbidly obese! 😂
Too true - mental health: remove the stigma. Food addiction is a mental issue. But obesity can also result from certain medical conditions and medications people need to take. Overriding message: Don’t judge - ever
I'm not surprised that people who struggle with their health and diet. They need to find solutions for overweight and support in community with fitness and teaching people to eat healthy foods. I have have same problem with my fitness but I never give up and keep make progress with myself 😊
There are too meny kibab shops, migrants when they get here open kibab shops or a barbers with the help of the Governments,so they are to blame for all these shops, don't get me wrong i'm not calling the migrants but the Government should cut down on giving out licenses.

I think a lot of the "obesity" I see around me. is learned behaviour. Bad eating habits passed on from parents to their children. The "trauma" they describe is caused by the reaction that they get when they leave home, and find out that their family norms are not shared by other people.
You can be slim and have high cholesterol and high blood pressure
Cwm the town I grew up lesss goooo Wales Wales 🏴
Just cut any benefits they are claiming let them starve, they will soon start to lose weight!
no mention of the deregulation of sugar and ever increasing amouts of sugar being added to our food?
So the fattest place in Britain is wells? 😁
Is that wells in Somerset, not far from me but do not go there very often,
@@lesdonovan7911 I think it was a joke about the way Steve pronounces Wales :D
A kebab is probably one of the most unhealthy foods you can get here they do taste good though
Thank you for being genuine and compassionate. I love watching your channel .
Thanks for watching. :)
Us obese in wales have emotions like everyone else, big cwtch to all xx
You are a really nice person ❤❤❤❤you are absolutely right people must learnto people who are over weight
Thanks for the kind words!
Interesting fact - Ebbw Vale Iron/Steel Works produced over 50 % of the steel used by the Confederate Army for their weaponry during the US Civil war.
That is quite interesting! Thanks for sharing
Thank-you for being so understanding, Steve. The world needs many more people with your knowledge and maturity. Yes, trauma is a massive problem - for all the reasons you mention in the case of Ebbw Vale and countless other communities in the UK and elsewhere that have undergone a complete social and economic transformation during our lifetimes - as well as all those intensely personal traumas that, as defenceless children and as vulnerable teenagers, we most certainly did not choose. I met a lovely doctor today, who said to me, "Remember, you have had quite significant mental health issues going back over many years; you therefore have a really good excuse for finding weight loss really difficult." None of us can change what has already occurred in our lives, but with that kind of really positive affirmation from people in positions of responsibility, we will be all the better prepared to change what is yet to come!
I love your comparison program, Steve
Funding mental health services would go a long way to combating obesity - and poverty too.
I glad you said that..❤
yes, I agree
If there are no jobs you have no hope and I believe likely to suffer from low self esteem which may translate into comfort eating. Portion control is one answer and this plus good nutrition should be taught at school. I was taught to allow 4ozs (113 gr) of meat per person for a meal. I gained weight when I had chemotherapy. So when everyone else was stick thin I put on 5 stone (70 lbs) I was comatose for 5 days after each treatment and was being sick constantly. I had several different types of anti emetic. When I could eat all I could manage was milky porridge. I think my weight gain was not food but lack of exercise and my body being poisoned on a regular basis. I now have heart lung and stomach disorders and no cartilage left in my knees. I now eat one meal per day plus a mouthful at breakfast so I can safely take the myriad of drugs I need. I do a 3 day fast each month but it really doesn't make much difference because I can't move about. I use olive oil and butter for cooking, no seed, corn or vegetables oil. My diet low carb vegetables, beef, lamb, chicken, eggs, lemons, high carbs once or twice a week (pasta, rice, potatoes) avocado and kiwi fruit occasionally. I'm not pre or diabetic. I feel sorry for people who are overweight. My friend is a skinny 8 stone she eats far more than me. Even she didn't believe me until we went on holiday together and she saw exactly what I ate. So some nurture some nature?
I'm sorry to hear that! Frustrating to say the least. I hope you're doing better now.
13 stibe us 13. stones x 14lbs. = 184 lbs. I was raised during WW2 all of our food was rationed. I had started school before the startof WW2 - this was the rations for each adult, was " but on average one adult's weekly ration was 113g bacon and ham (about 4 thin slices), one shilling and ten pence worth of meat (about 227g minced beef), 57g butter, 57g cheese, 113g margarine, 113g cooking fat, 3 pints of milk, 227g sugar, 57g tea, and 1 egg.- sweets where also rationed, and at times there where hugh=e queues at shops. if people found out a=that if canned food that was not on ration came available in other shops, the queues where huge,. As a result \i got malnutrition very badly, and never got to the same weight as the others in my class. size of my school
Sorry to hear that! Sounds like a very hard time. Now we have the opposite problem--a plethora of food but no nutrition at all and just empty calories that cause weight gain.
14 pounds is 1 stone, so 13 stones is 182 pounds - and that’s just what she’s lost! - and she doesn’t look thin now. Historicallly the poor were thinner, the wealthy were fatter, in most western countries now it’s the other way round, and in western countries it’s usually the wealthier that are thinner, or at least normal, in weight.
Yes, isn't it funny (not in a humorous way) how that has switched in our modern day?
Hi Steve, just been watching another one of your videos, I believe you like watching Gordon Ramsey (me too!). You should check out 'The Hotel Inspector' with Alex Polizzi, she takes no BS like Gordon Ramsey which makes for some very funny moments. It also shows a lot of information about English hotels and how they function 🙂
Thanks for the suggestion! Yes, I do love Gordon Ramsey :) haha
I will be 100% honest with you Steve, although I was NEVER a bully (having suffered years of it at school), I did tend to judge overweight folks with ease, BUT, once I became Transgender, and with the amount of negativity we get (I personally suffer abuse and threats of violence), I can now sympathise with these folks. It is not until one is on the receiving end of it that one can really know how it feels.
Yes, it's easy for us to judge that (and those) which we don't know! We're all guilty of it.
Hi Steve, you are absolutely right, we are.
Being over weight can also cause other problems which in turn puts a strain on the NHS .
Yes, this is true.
@@reactingtomyroots you don’t even need to be classed as ‘obese’ to notice the impact of weight gain.
I was always naturally skinny (49kg at my heaviest) and went back to that weight within a couple of weeks after giving birth.
But after I put on 10kg when my autoimmune disease (rheumatoid arthritis) went haywire and I was on a crap load of steroid tablets and injections added to the reduced movement due to swollen joints I put the weight on.
Despite still being within my normal BMI range I absolutely notice the extra strain that weight is putting on my deformed and damaged joints.
As a nurse I know that we also need to account what is natural for a person regarding weight also - while I was skinny at 49kg I was also was obviously muscular and didn’t look sickly but the next person my height and weight would look sickly at that weight.
As a nurse I learnt quickly from the anaesthetic team that when taking BMIs of people going for surgery to add extra notes such as ‘extreme muscular’ (ie obvious they are constantly in the gym), also adding notes about lifestyle of work so noting if they are a labourer etc as BMI may say they are overweight but when you account for their lifestyle there is a small percentage of those people where BMI charts aren’t reliable due to muscle mass etc
Thank you for your comments Steve, I’m very lucky in that, if anyone has adversely commented about my weight, I haven’t heard it. The thing about a food addiction is that food is almost the only thing that an addict can’t give up, alcohol, smoking, and drugs can all be removed and never touched again…but you can’t stop eating!
I'm fat. 6' 3" tall and current weigh 342Ibs, however I've lost 61Ibs since the beginning of July. Ex rugby player however but that's no excuse. BMI is just one of the factors, but I agree with you, every rugby player would be regarded as unfit and obese when this obviously is not the case..
Congrats on your success! Sounds like you're doing great.
@@reactingtomyroots Thank you.
13 stone is 182 pounds
There is a political point here also, since the last of the big employers left the area in the 90s, i wonder how many quality jobs have been created with help from the Welsh Assembly in Cardiff, the welsh government came into being in the late 1990s.
God when I was in my mid 20’s I had a BMI of 11, at my most ripped a girl came up and kissed my bicep in a pub she said she had to it was so perfect, I’m not like that now at 42 but will get back to that in the next year Steve
The medical definition whilst it has flaws is a simple method of calculation. The intake of this some of food is not a problem if you are regularly doing physical work like mining and heavy industries is not a problem.....you are going to work through those calories in a day's work. When those industries close but diet does not change you have a problem with obesity.
Where you have access to good public transportation, good healthcare, and good unprocessed food you have a healthy nation
Where you design with car dependency, have crap public transportation, and massive health and wealth inequality you get an obese unhealthy population.
Not sure what the Netherlands comes out in that table but it’s supposed one of the healthiest, happiest nations.
One of my sayings is "A diet is for life, not just for Christmas. I have experienced so called "middle age spread" where you find you have to cut down on food input just to slow down the rate of putting on weight. My waist size has gone up by about four inches over the last ten years, despite me eating a lot less. I live alone so if I have to cook for guests I have to remember that most people eat more than me.
Robots took over my G, Just say it 😂
