I love the common sight of bandaids all over the hands of knife youtubers, lol, so authentic.
I'd consider this to be just a fixed angle system you can use much better stones for. I think it's incredibly smart
That’s my biggest beef with all of the systems. I’ve invested a lot of money into stones and want to use them
@@magnusmagnuson2862I had used the Lansky system for almost 8 years straight since I was 17. Best system of the time but you could only use their hones and then I upgraded to the KME. Much better quality hones and overall consistency in edges but you were still only limited to that kind of product. The ability to use such a wide variety of not just diamond hones but also soaking stones and splash and go stones is such a better option
It's better in a simple way. If you're super ocd like me about having your blade sharpened at specific angles, a fixed angle system only maintains that angle for the part of the blade right in front of the clamp. The further left or right you move, the shallower the angle gets. It's not noticeable enough on small blades but on longer blades, you'll definitely see it in the thickness of the edge changing. Also it makes things weird if you want to freehand grind the same knives down the line because it will create a double bevel towards the extremities.
I struggle sharpening, I always pick up some good information with your videos. I still struggle but I am learning...lol
I feel like you stole the words out of my mouth!
This is definitely the best non-motorized sharpening system I have seen so far.
It looks like it would be small enough to fit into a backpack too.
Bingo!!!🎉❤
I've had the pro model for 6 months now. It doesn't have the play in the swivel like the version you are demonstrating. Vertical rod more solid as well. Mine also came with the rotating dual clamp.
More versatile. The pro allows you to use stones in
lengths of 6 to 10 inches and variable widths.
As someone who owns a TSProf Pro Hunter,
Hapstone V8, and a KME, I find this usefull on
some projects. Especially sinse I have a large
collection of full size bench stones. Great at
starting a bevel and/or reprofiling, then finish up
with freehand. I use angle cube on both the stone and the guide rod when switching stones. I bet
A person could set the guide rod at a certain angle to do convex edges. I've been wanting to try that.
Not sure why Mark didn't send you the pro straight up. He was suppose to send DBK a sample several months ago for a review but I've never seen it on their channel. If you want Jerad, I can ship you my copy for a review. Interested in your thoughts. Peace.
I appreciate the offer, however I'm going to reach back out and see if he wants to send what ever his best option is, I'm surprised he didn't when I got the attachment but I'm OK with doing both. Hopefully we will see that soon, I have a lot of great Sharpening content coming up as well 👊
I checked his sight and my pro model isn't on there.
Always looking forward to your content.
Curious of your opinion of Bladebinge for buying. Thanks Jerad. @@NeevesKnives
I have the other model of this one, it’s very solid and doesn’t wobble like the version you have. I paid $174 for it and enjoying it so far.
Looks pretty good. I try freehand most of the time and your instructions help a lot. Thanks Jared
Dude, you make it look so easy. With your video help,I'm def.improving.Doesnt help that I started getting serious about sharpening at 64,with my killer arthritis, keeps me off the streets at night!!😂
Great review, just ordered one as I’ve always wanted an angled system for all the stones I already own. I too, would like all the improvements you suggested, but it certainly won’t cost $120 then. I’ve owned a lot of sharpening systems and think this design is the best as it allowes the use of multiple stones people already own. You’re not limited to what the manufacturer says you can use.
Please invent one. I have lost count of the number of sharpeners I bought and still couldn’t get a good edge. I want to try one more version.
Freehand is truly not that hard. Everyone sucks at first. You just have to dive in, stick with it, and suffer through the first few attempts like we all do. You will very quickly get exponentially better. If you're intimidated just minimize all the variables you can initially, like starting with a friendly steel and a straight edge utility blade shape.
Cannot recommend large bench stones enough for learning. The bigger the better. It is much easier to precisely control your movements with two hands on the knife and you want as much of the edge length in constant contact with the stone as possible. The stability makes it *much* easier to feel and hold your angle.
My friend and I bought from Mark at the same time, we got the red, heavy base that does not move when in use. It came with a water stone with 2 grits. The looseness at the magnetic head on mine was from the bolt at the top bottoming out, solved with a metric flat washer under the head of the bolt. Did the same treatment to the pivot parts also, allows parts to be snugged up a little. I tried my dollar tree knife on my friend's sharpener and was not pleased with how it worked. I will most likely sell mine "as new" and build a guided sharpener instead. The lifting force generated when sharpening is caused by the knife not being mounted directly under the swivel point of the holder, IMHO.
Great video! I’ve seen guys using this and complaining that it has to be used with the spine facing you, and the blade edge toward the post. I didn’t understand this but you proved my theory. Clever idea!
Seems like a pretty cool idea that needs some work and some adjustments. I could see how this could be helpful for some folks that want more of a freehand style experience to learn but don’t quite have the skills yet. Better stones, better materials for the arms and joints, protection for the blade. It’s got potential to be helpful for some people I’m sure but needs improvement.
I prototypee a design like this 10 times. Glad someone is beating me to it
Thanks for checking this out for us
This is similar to a system Warthog Sharpeners put out years ago before the V-sharp
Thank you for doing these reviews! I feel like after you have fiddled that much with it...I could have been done with a fixed angle sharpening system. I could be wrong though.
The downside of it is you have to keep the rod on the mount parralel to the stone surface. Otherwise youll be creating a convex edge as your knive is move away and back from the "not so fixed" pivot point. But if ther rod would be straight and bend in the near of knive cleam or the knive cclamp would be attached to the rod at a certain angle You would not have any problem with not keeping the constant angle. Still that only goes for straight edges where knive belly would be an issue with every fixed or "not so fixed" sharpening system.
add a washer on the clamp screws..it removes the play
How is this a fixed angle? Simple geometry knowledge would tell you the angle changes depending on how close you are to that vertical rod.
User error, he didnt set the height for the rod to be parallel to the stone.
This is Helpful, informative!
Thanks Jerad! Great instruction!
Been looking at this system and others from them for over a year since you should be able to use whatever stones you like but they still seem to be in the prototype stage, not really meant for end users. Hope they settle on a or a few designs and up the quality of the materials somewhat. I think it could be a great product!
I sold these around 1988 to '91 in a sporting goods store. I think Lansing offered them back then.
YES! I've seen this advertised so much for awhile and always wanted to know your opinion..
I just ordered this one, but only with the gate, without the attachment. Didn't use it yet. The videos of the maker using it look easy; how come you had a problem using the gate? What was wrong with it?
Definitely interested to see if you can get the Master 2 model to try out. From what I've seen, it might fix some of your concerns.
Impressive when you do the high speed shot how consistent you are with each stroke. Im working on that, but have a bit to go..
The angle of the blade changes from one end of the stone to the other. You will have a convex edge at best.
How so, and why should it matter? Adjusting for the same final edge angle / apex stability, a convex will cut better.
What sharpener would work on a 1 1/16" blade for whittling ?
I find it harder to do with a fixed stone on the table, I like to sharpen with a smaller stone in my hand, guess I feel more control like that!?
I been following him on this project for a while I think it has great potential but I would like to see better quality more accurate and just more features and the price to go down
This is brilliant!! I'll be ordering me one soon😉.... thanks Neeves
Learned something today. Again. Thank you so much, Jerad.
Thanks for the thorough and honest review.
This is cool. I wanted to ask, you really make it look simple since you’re quite the sharpener, Is their room to really Fug up your edge if you don’t have a steady hand or ar a newbie… I’m an ok sharpener and understand the whole process of sharpening. I’m just curious if like someone really sucked at freehand sharpening if this system will take out all of the human inconsistencies a poor sharpener may have? Thanks, I really like these types of videos….
P.S. Did you know that prior to your videos the most POS Mytatso kitchen knife with a hole in it advertises…. I would only think this would drive you crazy having garbage knives advertise prior to your content playing.?.?
i think the places that can go wrong is the bar can pop out, and litte things like that, i think after a couple sharpenings you would get the hang of it pretty quickly im going to get the upgraded one very soon
great instruction
Jared. What microscope are you currently using to check the edges?
Love your videos!!!
Following ;-)
I'm sure you put a lot of work into this video - thanks Jerad!
Fantastic video, but what I'm getting from all these contraptions is they will never be as good taking the time to learn freehand well..I think that's what you're thinking when you review these science experiments 😅....great job Jarad 👏
What was the folder you used in the video, the one with the tall sheepsfoot blade and the Vox tear drop shaped opening hole? Looks familiar?
It’s currently out of stock, but the Hapstone T1 is a more rudimentary (and much cheaper) version of this.
My issue with the hapstone T1 is that it has an infinite amount of adjustments and you have the screw the threads perfectly on both sides to get the angle perfect most likely having to use an angle cube. I’m checking the DMT aligner clamp. I think it has 7 adjustments but at least you’d know that you’re getting the same angle on both sides and seems to be a lot faster.
@@Huero87 Thanks, I’ll take a look at the DMT aligner clamp. If you want to see the T1 in use, Jef Jewell has a good video on it.
Have you done a similar review on the KME sharpener. Do you think the KME is worth purchasing?
How are you able to get a convex edge with that system ?
I'm not a fan of magnets near my blades, once they get magnetized, all the little metal filings cling to the edge making it hard to see when i get a burr... Everytime I think I have a bur, I wipe the filings off & its back to the stone. Makes me say bad words really loud. 🧲+🔪= 🤬
Jared, I have a question I hope you can see this comment I really like this system, however I like my work sharp professional gen 2 I'm buying the adapter for use of other stones I'm looking through stone options I cannot afford the diamonds right now can I get a good sharpening going from diamond to Boride PC recommended stones set, I want to spend about $90 or even a lil more for a set of course 220, 600, 800, to about 1200 grit out of the non diamond what do you think i should go with? I'm pretty good at sharpening now cuz of you, will these stones work with the work sharp adapter? Thank you hope to hear back 💯🤙🔥
The base should be much heavier to prevent it from rocking. Otherwise nice. 👍🏼
23:19 no edge would look like this xD
Also is the guiderod not set parallel to the stone in some shots, or is it just the camera angle?
I keep getting ads for this. I'm pretty skeptical.
Good stuff dude!! Just got into your channel!! I like it!
U from southern Wisco? Sure sounds like it
Smart idea but idk if all stones will fit in it
The opposite of my Lanksy system. Instead of the stone moving across the blade, the blade moves across the stone or plate in this case. Probably costs a lot more too.
Thanks Jared 😎
Ok so you don’t like this what would you recommend
their is a new version that is greatly improved
Yeah I got it and will be testing
@@NeevesKnivesI have it and it's junk. The amount of slop in all of the articulating joints is astounding and the magnetic clamp is just horrible and unsafe. I'm trying to return the thing but they aren't responding after an email from them offering to sell me the mechanical clamp for $60 that will fix the problems that come with the junk magnetic clamp. Total shit customer service for a less than mediocre sharpening system
You should ha Kara use it. Would be very interesting.
Best invention ever!!
I like the idea of this
The band aid on the thumb 😂 .
I've seen similar systems online but the ones I saw had a clamp installed vs the magnets and could take different size stones. The magnets would be better for tiny knives like slipjoints and such but the clamp looked more stable with these way it was made. With how loose everything is right now I'd imagine it would get much worse over time due to the materials used on this one. Idea is good but quality Seems lacking in this model at least and the lack of adjustable stone holder means you are locked into buying only from them (depending on size). Thanks for the great vid and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.
What degree angle does hinderer use for their xm18 spanto blade?
Sharpie trick will help you.
Where is the link for that?
I don't have a link but you can easily search sorry
Variety……. Nailed it. Top ta Bottoom. Thank
I have a work sharp fixed angle system. I wanna upgrade. Any recommendations anyone?
The new worksharp pro looks nice. I really like the KME. I’ve used it for a couple years and it works great!
Innovation...go figure !
Ya ever a have a steel that seems to react differently than all other steels?
My evil nemesis is 154cm, I could imagine using this method on my Ontatio SK5 Blackbird 10 years ago and throwing everything in the trash under knife rage 😂 I'm a huge fan of carbon steel esp 10 Years ago so me and stainless didn't get along to well.
That 154cm on that knife is the craziest steel I've ever worked with. I have reprofiled 100s of knives and delt with lots of steels and nothing is like 154cm. ...Well atleat the 154cm on that specific knife. I've owned two and both were identical to sharpen.
It always develops the smallest micro wire bur and fools users into a falls sense of accomplishment ..
"Come and see, LOOK UPON THE SHARPEST KNIFE DAD HAD EVER MADE, BEHOLD ITS GLORY MY FAMILY " then ya proceed to try and cut paper again and all that joy leaves your body as your kids laugh and your wife says "was that supposed to be sharp" 😡 LOL
I've honed my skills with sharpening and profiling now so the knife is easy for me.
Ya just have to strop that steel aggressively with green compound and it will begin to sing.
I used to hate that knife but now I love it and its the only knife I haven't gotten rid of.
If you sharpen freehand for 30 or 40 years you can get your bevel pretty even, but if you use one of those fancy jigs you will never develop that skill, just sayin'.
You will have good days and bad days, no matter what system you choose.
I love this channel but would love to see a video about Opinel knives or more Cold Steel knife reviews.
Thank you for your dedication!
I will do what I can, I'm not the biggest opinel fan tbh, as far as freehand if you actually put forth time effort into it while watching and learning from those who do know, you can get decent in a month, good in a couplw months really good in about a year, after 2 years you will be a pro, like anything practice
@@NeevesKnivesYep practice make perfect. I admit that I was dissapointed in my recent Opinel purchase. The blade steel is high carbon and takes a good edge but they took weight off the blade which makes it too weak for really strong cuts pushing with your arm.
Locking mechanism not so hot either. They don't make them like they used to...
Again, thanks.
Fixed angle is almost always superior to free hand... Loose less material and get an edge quicker
I like it for setting a 10dps transition bevel, but that also can be done by hand.
For setting a 15dps microbevel edge its ONLY viable if its fast at apexing, so being able to work both sides without reclamping.
Otherwise it can be done freehand with 10 light alternating passes on a 1k.
The massive mistake people do is only sharpening on one angle, which is way too much surface / steel volume for fast apexing / touchups.
Oh God no! That is just entirely too clunky. I have an OG Worksharp system that works well but rarely gets used. I have a diamond plate and a few stones for free hand. I can't freehand very well nor can I roll a good joint. What I can do is reach in the drawer and pull out my Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker and in seconds I am laying down an accurate edge (as long as I want a 20° or 30° angle).
Another quick thought. Being a mechanic in a prior life I generally hated my tools picking up a magnetic charge. Seems to me you are magnetizing your blade slapping it on that big magnet. Now the blade will attract the shavings when you sharpen and some may eventually find their way into the pivot bearings. Just a thought.
All you have to do is tough it with a dryer sheet after, even regular Sharpeners with no magnets will create a magnetic effect after Sharpening on an all metal fixed angled system, there's upgraded version I woulda go if I had known
Dudeeeee 😲
a lowercase comment
No chance in hell I’m putting magnets in my knife blades scratching them all to shit just to get a sharp edge . Stick to the TsProf💯
Not such a new idea. Warthog Multi-Edge does the same thing, but way better IMHO.
Customer service is horrible compared to its competitors
Now stop whacking at the paper . That does not show a sharp knife. slow down and cut a very good symmetrical, smooth circle 6' in diameter. It has to be very smooth along the edge. Show you doing in on video. Please.
haha this is a stoner idea
“omg what if we REVERSED the sharpening angle onto the hand!”
too Cumbersome for even Freehand learning
That sound is awful.
Genius
Thanks bro
Yeah just like the hapatone T1, these are not going to teach anyone to free hand. I tell people that all the time. It's a cruch and it teaches some bad habits that are incredibly difficult to break once they are set in muscle memory.
