      22grena I'm not trolling. I couldn't give a shite what Scotland means in ancient languages ffs. When people think of the kilt and bagpipes they think of Scotland, not Ireland. Imagine us on St. Andrew's day running around in Irish clothing??

      History lesson: The modern Scots are an amalgam of the Irish settlers who set up the Irish kingdom of Dal Riada and the Picts. Tartan is not Scottish, its an import to Scotland. The pipes are Irish in origin i.e. the Irish Warpipes which the Scots took and added a drone to. The Scottish language is a dialect of Irish. The Word Scotland comes from Scotti and means Irishman. Mac or Mc comes from the Irish language and means son of. Whiskey or Uisce beatha is Irish for water of life. The Scottish long kilt was derived from the Irish Leine but an Englishman invented the modern short kilt. In any case the kilt was only worn by a minority of Scots, the Highlanders. The kilt almost disappeared after the Highland clearances. It only came back into use because of the influence of people like Sir Walter Scott and his fictional romantic tales of Scotland (Scott organised the trip of George 1V to Scotland and George arrived wearing a kilt and started the rage for tartan that has lasted to this day). This association between the Highlands and British monarchy was cemented by the patronage of a German prince and his English Queen Victoria and by the recruitment of Scots into the British army. BTW to the numpty Stuart Findlay dng, the bearskin was copied from the French army by the British army i.e. the English army, and it is the British army which has created many of the affectations you see in marching bands; the defeated Scots had nothing to do with it.

      you seem very desperate to claim anything Scottish as Irish when in fact the peoples of Ireland and Argyll were basically the same people .Dal Riada was but a small part of the population and you confuse Gaelic language (which was adopted by Alba before being replaced by Scots) with the actual people . When Alba was created the first three kings were still called King of the Picts before becoming King of Scots.
      Tartan was in China and found in Austria in celtic archaeological digs and the pipes are played all over the world .Kilts as we know them were invented by rawlinson and most tartans by lowland companies such as wilsons of bannockburn who were not subject to the restriction placed on those north of the highland boundary fault after Culloden. Kilts/tartan became popular as you say after Sir Walter Scott and were adopted by the rest of Scotland.
      At a later time with a resurgence in irish nationalism this was copied by the irish (plain kilts)to help create a particular identity .
      The creation of Highland regiments happened after Culloden although there were already some at that time. This is where the pipes and drums marching bands originated ,Scots regiments in the british army .Plainly daft to say Scots had nothing to do with it.
      I don't have a problem with Irish in tartan kilts, and wearing Scots military dress...after all "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" and I am sure you know who were deservedly crowned world champions (once again) in the pipe band championships in Glasgow. Clue they are not Scottish
      However if you really wish to separate Irish and Scottish cultures there are plenty of examples of Scottish tunes being passed off as Irish for you to get going on
      Mairis wedding, Fear a bhata, westering home ,the gael,the parting glass,raggle taggle gypsy, etc

    history lesson..the mythical tale of the irish invading scotland is what it is....a tale written by irish medieval irish monks to give ireland an identity. noo, the tale is that these fictional irish scotti are supposed to have invaded scotland, wales, the west coast of england, the isle o man and one irish historian claims parts of europe. well, that then would put them on a par with the romans(which was the intended purpose of these made up writings mostly copied from the bible) noo, when i watch archaeological/history programmes on tv they mention the picts of scotland raiding roman britain , the saxons,normans and vikings but in all my many years of watching these programmes they never mention this mighty mythical irish tribe scotti. that,s because it,s a mythical tale to give ireland an identity. noo, the kilt the three drone bagpipes are scottish adopted by irish nationalists in the 1800s. the kilt has nothing to do with a "leine" cloth. you can type in.....duplicate of irish dress scottish tartans authority.....you can type in........a guide to traditiona irish clothing the history of fashion in iireland......you will see where they mention the irish jumper from the island of aran was first made in the late 19th/20th century. scottish woman were invited to aran to teach them how to make these jumpers as were scottish fishermen to teach them fishing skills. tweed also taken over to ireland from scotland. type in.....the history of the aran sweater the sweater shop.....altough the original concept came from guernsey an island off england. noo, irish fiddle music ...the fiddle was introduced to ireland from scotland.....there are 100s of scottish fiddle tunes went to ireland in the 1800s.(the next time you listen to an "irish" fiddle tune google it,s origins). many scottish sangs also made there way to ireland auld and modern (you can google them too) when the first irish bands appeared in the 60s (i.e the clancies who were actually actors who turned to singing as their acting career flopped) the readily adopted the lively scots style. many english sangs auld and new made their way to ireland. i know because i was actually around then. the macs/mcs and o prefixes would have entered ireland in the 1200s when irish chiefs hired scottish clans to help fight the normans( just like the prefix "fitz" entered ireland with the normans. the macdonalds etc were given huge tracts of land in ireland in return.the name macdonald is pronounced in scotlans as...mac/mc donal/mac/mcdonnel/ and o.donnel which simply means "of"the clan donald. the irish nationalists started to adopt the macs/mcs and o,s (mc just being an abbreviation of mac. noo...whisky... usige beatha....this is the name ancient peoples in scotland used when they cut wee hole in a tree and drank the waters that came out...hence..water of life. the worlds oldest whisky still has been found in scotland in a town called lindores in fife. noo, irish whiskey may wel have entered ireland from scotland when high taxes forced many distillers over to ireland . jamiesons famous irish whisky is actually scottish. just type in .....origins john jamiesons irish whiskey(the irish bit was added later jamieson. ian anderson who founded bushmills was also a protestant/ presbyterian which suggests he was scottish. type in....irish whiskey myth or fact potstilled.....noo, ceilidhs... adopted by the irish in the 1920s alang with scottish stepdance and music.......type in history ireland reinventing the boundaries of irish dance helen brennan .....then the accordian entered ireland in 1910 from scotland . the first irish ceilidh band started inthe 1920s adopted from the scots ceilidh bands. type in........irish folk duo foster and allen set to bring their traditional magic to fife venue.......fife being a county in scotland......you will see where they met their hero scottish accordianist jimmy shand. he and will starr had a huge influence on irish accordianists. fiddlers like james hill, james scott skinner , niel gow and his son nathaniel also had a huge influence on "irish" fiddle music. like i wrote 100s of scottish fiddle reels made their way to ireland. most of the titles were changed in ireland. type in.........music essays traditional irish ireland......dolly parton, bill monroe(he even wrote a tune called scotland) woody guthrie all credit scotlands fiddle sang input to appalacian music. you can type in.....ireland and the celtic culture in search of ancient ireland knowth......irish nationalists in the late 1800s deliberately set out to create an identity to distance themselves from their english colonial roots. whose better to adopt than the scots culture and music.....there,s more but too much to write.

    Everything here, in the parade, is Scottish ... NOT IRISH. The uniform is Scottish. The kilt is Scottish, the sporran is Scottish, The bearskin is Scottish and the plaid is Scottish. No Irishman ever went into battle wearing a kilt; but multi thousands of Scots died wearing the kilt. When adapting the Scottish kilt to the Irish bands they used the green kilt or the saffron kilt. The Tartan is Scottish - NOT Irish. The 'band' is playing the Scottish pipes with the drone; not the Irish pipes which do not have the drone. The only way an Irishman would have died in battle wearing the kilt with the sound of the pipes in his ears would have been if he was in a Scottish regiment ... where were the Irish when Prince Charlie was trying to regain his throne?

    • @PiobGuy
      @PiobGuy 6 лет назад +5

      Just a little historical correction. The "Piob Mor" or "Irish War Pipes" have had a drone (or 2) since about 65 B.C. and likely came from the Middle East. The Highland Pipes were brought to Ireland in about 470 AD. While FDNY is certainly wearing Scottish attire, the tartan is their own and has been since at least 1965. The Irish do have tartans, mostly county tartans but they would have been worn as a brat (a wrap or cloak) rather than a kilt but they are tartans nonetheless. So that said, eveyone is entitled to their opinion but, what the heck, how about just enjoying the parade, the celebration, etc. and respecting FDNY for the job they do?
