- The tragic back story of black team. If you're anything like some of my friends, and reading is not your thing, or you just simply don’t have the time, I’ve created a summary video to outline the entire story of Black Team to give you your Halo lore fix. Keeping track of all these stories can be difficult and time consuming, which is why I made this video.
Black Teams story is told throughout 2 comics and 1 novel.

I actually think the Rookies death was ok. The Didact was stupid though. Technically, he isn’t dead. He should still be around somewhere.
343s mission is to destroy everything that came before them so it’s no surprise they’d get rid of old characters so unceremoniously
@@Ghost-ql3hl there were trailers that were Buck interviewing all the ODSTs on his team. You can't find the videos anymore, but there are still summaries and transcripts online, and Mickey was showing some signs of being sympathetic to the insurrectionist even then.
Roma "dying" and then coming back to life is pretty much the definition of when you are playing a game and make a character die but later you regret that so you think of a way that they really survived.

I think infinite will be an off and on experience. DLC and new seasons bring in players who then log off until next season or DLC.
@@commanderhurst3283 perphaps season 2 looks great so far but what they need to revive halo infinite is forge, custom browser and co op campaign but they have been delaying them too much.

Actually 17 active Spartan II because there’s 6 members of Omega team. I’m aware Halo Wars 2 in multiplayer and the encyclopedia only show 3 of its members causing confusion.
All of them who died along the way went out like a badass.

Huh? No they weren’t. Escalation is still very much canon.
@@Woodyisasexybeast there were so many inconsistencies that directly conflict with the canon which sometimes happens with halo’s extended lore either because of lazy writing or because the lore was provided with later halo games like the fall of reach that was rewritten after halo reach released
Regardless, it definitely hasn’t been retconned. With that logic, you’d have to say Halo Reach isn’t canon. Which is definitely not the case, It’s most definitely canon. When a universe exists this long and has been fleshed out this much, there are bound to be inconsistencies from time to time. That’s just the nature of building a huge universe with multiple writers.
Escalation is definitely not the only Halo story with inconsistencies. Halo Wars, the Kilo 5 trilogy, and Halo Reach all have inconsistencies as well. So that would mean they’d have to be retconned too. This is why retconning is a slippery slope. Everything mentioned above is still canon, regardless of inconsistencies.

This actually give me a new insight on the covenant, me realizing that a lot of races were forced into the covenant like the grunts and the taming of the hunters. Even if a lot of them end up being loyal as shit, some actually did want to leave and kinda makes me wonder if I did kill some that didn't want to actually kill me

As someone who hates reading, I really enjoy having a good summary that provides details about the story alongside the story itself. This was a great video and I’m excited to learn more about Halo’s deep lore

Audible has all the Halo novels. If you don't like to read or have a hard time with reading due to eye problems I reccomend Audible. Turns into almost a podcast feel. Listen Whilst doin other shit
Ayye, a suggestion. You should listen to the audiobooks and audiobooks in general. Good single narrators usually have good voice acting and change voice per character. Its like watching a movie but you can get shit done while you're doing it lol. edit* ah Raizen beat me to the punch

@@raizenr2387 hahaha dude thats how I got started pretty much; just a bunch of halo novels. Lots a good military scifi out there. Try "Frontlines" by Marko Kloos for godzilla sized aliens or "Lost Fleet" by Campbell for something more to do with space battles. Oh for something hilarious I highly recommend "Hard Luck Hank" for Sci Fi comedy. You won't regret that last one.
I just absolutely adore the lore of the way the armor interacts with the Spartans in the suit. And it seems so realistic in description, it's just awesome the care that went into Halos lore.
And even more terrifying is the plausibility of REAL SPARTANS. It might not be as far away as you think, still probably as unethical. (That's why I say "terrifying.")

I always got the vibe reading the books that if circumstances had been different Chief and Linda might have had something. But obviously nothing could have ever come from it.

I recall reading about black team in halo evolutions and I felt really invested in them throughout this video, Halo just seems to do that I guess. Great content man.

Black teams story is told across a short story in a novel and two comics so I don’t blame you for forgetting certain details. There isn’t exactly a clear path to experience their storyline

Unfortunately. The most frustrating thing about Escalation is it actually has some good parts too. It’s just that the handling of black team and the Didact was done so poorly that they over shadow the more well written aspects.
There’s one issue in particular where Gabriel Thorne returns to his home town, the city that was composed by the Didact. It’s a very good issue. It’s a very solemn and sad glimpse into the event.
Lord Hood being responsible for the Spirit of Fire being lost was an interesting idea as well.

Aaaaand the didact killed them all in a comic because 343 did a shit job of making him seem like a threat in halo 4. Hmm yes let's have him kill a team that maybe 5% of the players even know about, I'm sure that 5% will really see how formidable he is now!

After the fall of Sparta, the Sacred Band were the most elite military formation in Greece. They not only beat the Spartans, but the rest of Greece. They were only defeated by Alexander the Great who cried when they died to the last man. What was the rationale behind the Sacred Band? The thinking by the Thebans was that lovers would have higher morale and never leave the battlefield because it would mean leaving their lover behind. *Well, it worked. The bromance was real and genuine*

6:05 That would depend upon if this occurred before or after augmentation.
Jerome, Alice, and Douglas were actually ‘washouts’, where the augmentation failed and almost killed them, so they were removed from the program.
Halsey kept them and the other washouts around and attempted to repair the damage from augmentation, and actually managed to do so successfully, which allowed Red Team to enter active service.
So if this was post Augmentation, it could not have been the Red Team of Halo Wars.

There’s not much to distinguish between them. It’s just how the story is told. That’s why there’s visual indications such as the numbers on their visors.

"next recorded mission" this line tells me that it was a significant enough mission that ONI pushed it as propaganda of the Spartans. there wasn't too much black ink on the mission report.
Honestly, when I say “next recorded mission”, it’s just fancy talk for “this was the next story written about black team”.
The time of Halo 4 / 5 features some fantastic writing in the EU, but the writing on the game itself is mostly ill-constructed plots unworthy of fan fiction. While in the comics, wiping out Black team like that was also ill advised and such a waste.

I'm not trying to argue that these Spartans shouldn't have emotions but these are Spartan IIs. Despite their feelings toward each other, they should have had better control over their emotions. I'm surprised they weren't even reassigned to different units considering the fact that they nearly killed each other over love.
They didn’t nearly kill each other. Red team nearly killed Margaret. Black team may have retaliated but no members of red team were permanently disfigured like Margaret.
Love is love, you can’t really control that.
In the end, Spartans are still human. And at the time, young kids that just didn’t know better. Despite their intelligence and training, they’re still just kids.

How does Infinite throw any of this out? I rather enjoyed Infinites campaign. I thought they told the story well, it was just a bit small in regards to characters.

@@Woodyisasexybeast You cannot imagine the whiplash I felt the first time I was introduced to these characters, learned about their lore, got invested in their story, only to find out right after that they got fucking offed in the most asinine way possible like throwaway characters due to lazy writing. This all happened in the span of less than an hour.
@@WatchMan283 I, and many others feel the same. I still find it hard to believe that they made such a ridiculous decision. The worst thing about it: the guy who wrote all of their story prior to their deaths wasn’t even the one that was responsible for killing them off. Somebody else stepped in and killed characters that they never even once wrote for.
@@Woodyisasexybeast It's infuriating. I've heard some people say they shouldn't retcon it for the sake of "literary integrity" but there was no integrity in the way that was written to begin with.
Retconning is just such a slippery slope. Retconning one story leads to another and then another. If they’ll retcon this it’s possible that they’ll retcon a story we actually like. So I don’t think it should be straight up retconned. It should just be explained away. Like I said, maybe it wasn’t even black team? Perhaps it was a group of IV’s field testing some new tech for them? Something like that. That way we don’t run the risk of any more major retcons in the future. It’s still fixable without straight up voiding the entire story.

@@Woodyisasexybeast, Not even that, give them an end that relates to their character arc. Not to some edgy forerunner. Let them save an ODST unit that went through similar events. And let the members of Black team give their lessons to the ODST members.

I like the fact they died disappointing deaths tbh. In a way, it shows the reality that not all people who’ve been built from the ground up their whole lives are gonna go out in the most awesome or meaningful way. Sometimes people in life, let’s say anyone in the Army, trained for combat, then they go out onto the field and one of them instantly dies the moment they’re deployed. If you think about it, what if that person trained for years just to go out like that? I’d say it’s realistic. Realities often disappointing.

All I got to say is it’s a comic it can be reckoned
Nah. Retconning is a slippery slope. If they retcon the comic, they could retcon a book, if they retcon a book, they could retcon a game. Unfortunately, they have to just role with it now. Much like how Thor was handled in the MCU. Thor and Thor the Dark World were not fantastic but they didn’t retcon them. They simply soft rebooted the character by changing the direction of the story. This would be the best way to handle the situation, I believe.
As I suggested in the video, a light retcon could work. One that doesn’t invalidate the whole story. Such as my original suggestion: The Spartans that died were Spartan IVs testing new tech for black team.
Just my 2 cents.

It’s impossible to say for sure but it is one possibility.
