    Great video! I have enough vision for smart glasses to be helpful and I use those to color in adult coloring books. I also have a dollhouse that is an ongoing project to decorate and furnish. Cooking I also hate, lol. There is a sign in my kitchen that says : I serve three kinds of meals- microwave, freezer, and take out. :-)

    Metal detecting... I am legally blind and have been mental detecting for almost 9 years. It is the perfect hobby because it is a equal opportunity hobby. No one can see what's in the ground. You learn the sounds on the detector and a pinpointer locates the precise area to dig up your item. I wear gloves to protect my hands. I love the historical items I have found. The first few times you might want to take someone who is knowledgeable in the hobby but after that you can plan your trip solo.

    Hi Alisha, I'm Dave and I've just recently entered the low vision community. I appreciate what you said about community in this video. I have been looking for a support group that has been where I'm at. I went thinking, where better to get resources for blind people than the CNIB. (I'm in Vancouver, BC btw.) We'll let me say this about that organization. I was deeply disappointed. I had a benign tumor removed from my brain leaving me with some vision loss. I've been at home re-couperating since late August. Slowly I've come to terms that my life is different now, I may need to look for a new line of work. Funny thing is it took me 30 years to find my dream job!! I no longer can drive my daughter to her hockey games let alone watch her on the ice, same with my son who just started high school and joined the football team. My life revolves around the kitchen preparing breakfast lunch and dinner, doing dishes!! Watching my wife go to work and shuffling the kids off to their activities is a painful new reality. I figured it was a good time to go look for a support group. Who better than the CNIB to point me in the right direction!! Let me just say this about my experience with the local CNIB. The lady was rude, confrontational and very off putting. I left feeling worse than when I arrived. At least I was feeling hopeful!! Anyway perseverance is the key. I appreciate your videos. I did go on line and found the white came society which is now defunct because of COVID. I also met a Helen on the same website who is 87 years young who invited me for coffee. Anyway I've babbled long enough. Thanks again for your video content. It was reassuring for me to see and hear some real life possibilities.

      Hey Dave, firstly so sorry for the late response. Secondly thank you so much for taking the time to share your story with me. I hope that you are continuing to recover and things are looking up for you.
      It's unfortunate that there are not better support groups in Vancouver, maybe you can start one like I did years ago? It really helps knowing other visually impaired people on this journey we're on. If you have any questions or wanna talk don't hesitate to reach out
      Take care!

      It really is, but you'll be even more grateful when you do meet and build friendships with those that take the time to understand you and your struggles. Hi Alisha... Thanks for this :)
    The one thing that bugs me is when people say 'impaired"... How am I impaired?
    I've been reading and writing for 55 years. You don't need eyes to read... Just a brain.
    I'm a b very good thrown together cook.
    The best thing for me: conversation. Talking to people helps me stretch my brainal unit.

    I can't ride a 2 wheeler but I ride a recumbent trike. I'm functionally blind and can see just enough. No fear of falling over and on 3 wheels there is no minimum speed.

    This may sound crazy, But I love driving. I'm a 23 year old man who has septo optic dysplasia, which makes me labeled legally blind, but I love cars, I love driving go karts, riding bikes, and driving 4 wheelers. Legally blind is just a label. Yes I only see from my left eye, but My vision is actually pretty good. 20/60 which is good enough to drive during the day only. I've been this way since birth, so when I hear people doubt me, saying that I'll never be able to drive, I take them to a go kart track and say "watch me." When I'm on the track, the stress, doubt, anxiety, and negativity of this world slides right off my back, and all of a sudden, I'm not just driving the go kart, I'm one with the machine. It just feels natural to me. Lap after lap, the sound of the engine, the wind through my hair, my left eye focused on the turn coming up, it's paradise, and something that I won't stop doing.

    • @alishainc
      @alishainc  2 года назад

      I'm glad you've found something that gives you peace and space to be yourself. You're lucky you're able to go kart hope you are able to for years to come!
