  • Amazing device that uses a circular saw as a panel saw.
    I made a manual panel saw with a parallel link for easy clamping.

      Where do you live because panel saws are F'n expensive and super hard to find? The lowest price I've seen is $1400 and I can buy the 80/20 profiles for a couple of hundred. There's an 80/20 rep in my city... Plus Amazon prices aren't that bad. I call BS!

      I bought an old panel saw in 1990 from a bankrupt lumber yard. I fot the pansaw, a radial arm saw, a table saw, and one hundred used 7.25, 10, 12 and 14 in saw blades. All for 500.00$ American. Sharpened the blades, mounted the panel saw, sold the table saw, and radial arm saw for 500 each. I've gone through a Dewalt circular saw every 2 years. The last one I bought was a Chicago Electric from Harbor Freight.

    Absolutely 💯 the best panel saw build I have ever seen. You should mass produce a panel saw kit and sell them! Before track saws...this is and was the OG for breaking down sheet products. Local home stores seem to always breakdown and are not nearly as nice as yours. I prefer a panel saw over a track saw. Especially 1 like yours. That thing is perfect!

    That is a very clever design. I'm particularly impressed by the modified riving blade used to move the saw. The work clamp mechanism is very clever too.
    I originally became interested in your work when I found your ornithopter video - maybe 8 or 9 years ago (wow time has flown 😁) If you were to revisit that project again and show us how you built it, myself, and I'm sure many of your viewers would appreciate it. The workmanship is always masterful, and the designs are innovative in every one of your projects. A joy to watch.

    • @AERuffy
      @AERuffy 3 месяца назад +1

      Thats my problem with it. It's too expensive for what it is. If you're tearing down panels over and over again then a panel saw is faster. But for the home DIYer a tracksaw will have more use for roughly the same cost.

    • @Phazaar
      @Phazaar 2 месяца назад +1

      @@AERuffy Until you said 'same cost as a track saw' I was in my head saying 'YEAH BUT IT'S THE SAME COST AS A TRACK SAW!' A vertical panel saw comes in at ~£15k, it's seriously hard to come by one that doesn't need 16' of wall space when you're likely not wanting more than 8' of capacity, whilst a sliding table saw will be about half that cost, but take up even more space and provide a ton of handling challenges, whether you're a DIYer or a pro. Being able to make this for 5% of those costs, to your own specifications, fitted to your own costs is why it's worth it.
      I couldn't justify a full size panel saw, and in fact tend to rip boards in half with a track saw. Things then slow down a lot when you need to cut a bunch of lengths of 600mm width as you can't use a mitre saw, can't have a table saw big enough to do this safely (and again, radial arm saws are massive). As soon as I clear a little spare wall space though, a 600mm capacity version of this will save me hours of repetitive crosscuts, and probably retire my mitre saw too. Can't see how it isn't worth it really.

    That clamping mechanism using simple parallelogram is clever. Not sure about riving knife being used to move a saw around, but it could be OK-ish as I guess you set your counterweight flawlessly so forces will be minimal. Tilting is very nice addon. But what I'm not so sure I like is access to the saw and depth of cut adjustment. As your other panel saw with circular saw on front side allows you to not just format panel materials, but also to scribe and cut groves in them, as it gives more control over the saw settings. Maybe I just missed some hidden lead-screw to set depth of cut here. Nevermind, I like your design style clean definition and videos straight to point.

    This is genius and i could see great use for it especially for hardware stores that don't provide a cutting service for sheet material as the other versions of the type of wall mounted saw wouldn't be as safe as this one is due to the blade being exposed the whole time. Therefore insurance is usually the problem. But with this one, its super clever and a hell of a lot safer so I'd imagine insurance wouldn't be as expensive. You deserve all the views and likes you get, master creator. Respect

      I understand where you are coming from, but any panel saw you can buy off the shelf would cost much more than the materials to make this. Also, just because he built it a specific way doesn't mean you have to, maybe you can cut cost by altering the design a bit? Those sliding rails aren't super expensive either.

I wonder if these beefy thick rails are really a must as it seems there are minial forces on these rails. That's something to think about to lower the BOM. I think I'm going to use this video as a basis to work on the design and extend it so that it's able to substitute a majority of table saw cuts but with increased safety. Thanks for the video!

    Fantastic build-but...
    Cannot help feeling that the linear bearings are a bit overkill - especially to carry a Ryobi circular saw. Tempted to try side mounted ball-races on the rails.
    Upper surface clamp would benefit from a 'sacrificial strip' to support the cut against tear-out.
    Some blade height adjustment- best cuts are when the blade clears the material by just a few mm.
    Not often I say 'I want one'- but I want one!

      Most of the aluminum rails and brackets could be replaced with wood. The aluminum just makes acquiring long straight pieces simple for the project. I'd probably laminate plywood together where needed.

    The problem is... Need.
    Everyone does different projects and has different needs.
    One struggles with beams, another with panels. That's why you have such different opinions.
    JSK did a great job designing this slab cutting panel.
    But will it be used by someone making frames, for example?
    Well, not really. And such a guy will complain.
    The idea and execution are 150%. Not to mention its accuracy. Every hole, every cut is a masterpiece.
    Japanese patience and accuracy.
    It's worth learning, gentlemen...
