  • We've had solar panels on our roof for the past year. A lot of people have asked us if it has been worth it and if we produced enough energy to charge our Mustang Mach-E. The answer is YES and we cover all the details in this video!

Glad your solar is doing well. We've had our panels for 14 years, and they have generated over 181,756 kWh -180,113 of them have fully powered our home and EVs, with the rest "donated" to our utility. Alas, just last week one of our Powerwalls stopped working, and it is proving very difficult to get Tesla to cooperate with the repair. Tsk.

love my home solar, especially when the sunlight goes straight into my mach e’s battery.

Net Metering: If you applied / documented plans to install solar before April 15, 2023 - you then had 2 years to actually do the install but still get paid with the Net Metering 2.0 rules. The trick was to get the power company to approve the panels & capacity.

Looove the graph from the day of the eclipse! Thanks Patrick

On the day of the eclipse, I was watching in real time as the solar production dipped. Since we only had 60% coverage, that was just as exciting as watching the sun!

We have a similar system and love it.

Thanks for posting this. Looking forward to the automation videos in the future. We live in Ramona (read hot summers) and did our analysis of our electrical usage to determine if solar made sense for us. The analysis alone showed how we could better utilize our energy consumption including charging our Mach E. Everybody’s situation is different but we went with the SDG&E EV plan with the $16/mo charge to get the best rates. Over the last year we averaged $146/mo with a high of $246/mo in Sept of last year.

    Finally, awaiting this review 🎉🎉🎉
Patrick, you know you can set a background image for that array tab that will affect both the webpage and the phone app that actually has an overhead view of your roof. You have that drone footage, which would be awesome, I always just use some Google satellite imagery from my homes that use Enphase.

We will be moving to central Florida (NW of Orlando) next year and am very interested in what your ideas are going forward. The home we are having built will be 100% electric from cooling, water heating, appliances and, of course, the Mach-e. So, yeah, where ever you decide to share your findings, upgrades, etc. I'll be watching!

I would also say to make sure that your roof is fairly new and not needing replacement prior to installing solar. Always enjoy your videos Patrick and Liv.

What rate does the utility offer you for electricity? Is it the same rate as what they charge you? There should be a difference because transmission needs funding.

I enjoyed this deep dive into the savings of solar panels. I have a 2021 Mach-E, I was told that we don't have chargers in the map app in the car, so it won't precondition or navigate to a charger because we don't pay for Connected Services? Anybody else running into this?? Help, please!

The car needs to be connected to find chargers.
