    For bright work, another advantage of cutting returns continuously from the same piece of stock, rather than batch cutting, is visual continuity of grain and color as the molding shape wraps around the corner. Always good times when your client appreciates (and will pay you for) that level of attention to detail...

    We'll done Spencer. Another good video. 2P-10 and other CA glue has been a huge game changer for me. I can now do high end prefinished crown/riser/light rail in about 1/3 the time than before. BTW, wood glue does not adhere to mitered end grain so it is really being supported by your 23gauge pins only.

    • @InsiderCarpentry
      @InsiderCarpentry  Год назад +4

      For a simple return I am very comfortable with the adhesion. I use it all the time without pins for returns.

    • @alexlazarevich2656
      @alexlazarevich2656 Год назад +3

      Wood glue DOES adhere to "mitered end grain". You need to coat both pieces of wood then, apply pressure for approximately 1 hour before it sets. 24 hours full cure strength (stronger than CA glue). Although, CA glue is plenty strong on it's own for trim.

Anyway based on priors I skipped the returns and router the edges over and offset is a 1/2” & bottom 1x2 is a 1/4”. Once painted not bad? I did remove one of the double beaded profile to make it flow better? Very fiddly but in the end at least they all match and fit their taste! ?

    Is CA glue more economical than HyperPUR for the miter returns? Or do you use CA glue because there's no setup required to use it (plugging in HyPUR or charged batteries etc)?

    • @InsiderCarpentry
      @InsiderCarpentry  Год назад +1

      Hipur is too thick and not necessary for this type of application. CA glue is the best choice for a variety of reasons. Easy to grab and use. Super thin so it creates a perfectly tight joint. The joint won't be stressed so you don't need the strength of hipur.

    Spencer, that is exactly how I have been doing it for over 30 years. The only difference between you and me is that I normally have to pry my fingertips from the trim. In some areas I just CA glue the trim in place, especially where I think a nail might split the wood. By the way, I noticed you use a mechanical pencil to mark with. I hired a "trim carpenter" one time and first thing he does is drag out the flat carpenter pencil that was marking a quarter inch line. I asked to see his pencil and promptly threw it out into the woods somewhere and told him to go out and get a .5mm mechanical pencil. He started doing better work after that. Excellent video my friend.
