    It goes without saying, for design engineers that love Apple, the lack off Solidworks Native compatibility, is a absolute heart break.

      @@imperfectxennial3008 Needs to be much more than made available. Apple needs to have a proper sitdown with the Devs, and forge a longterm plan to support and introduce their software to the OS for decades to come. Apple needs to show why it will be worth the effort and time and money. Makes no sense we get these softwares in a version this year, and then there is no support after for future updates etc.

    I'd recommend Macbook Air for productivity and a Windows desktop for everything else.
    Being realistic, a laptop is not appropriate to run real FEM simulations or to do intensive CAD modelling. A desktop Mac, like a MacPro, is badly overpriced. Now think about games!
    Again, a Windows desktop is the best option for high performance tasks and almost every single productivity app is compatible with MacOS.

      Do you recommend iMac on 16gb RAM and 1tr for softwares that a mechanical engineer would use ?

    • @danielgiraldoguzman
      @danielgiraldoguzman 2 года назад +3

      @@G_made Definitely no.
      Not because the 16Gb or the iMac itself, but because iOS is not friendly with engineering software in general.
      If you just need to do simple simulations or very small 3D models, maybe yes, that iMac could be fine. But if you're working on real simulations or large 3D models, a Windows desktop is better, both in value and stability.

      But with a huge performance drop off. In most cases, 30% decrease. Example: M3 Max 16-inch gets near 3100 single core performance according to Geekbench 6. A 30% reduction would lead to lower performance of 2170.
      Then there is the pricing issue with RAM & SSD. $200 for an extra tier of RAM or SSD. With Lenovo ThinkPad P16 series laptops can easily upgrade at a low cost for RAM and/or SSD after buying the lowest RAM and SSD specs.

    I'm doing some research for choosing my next laptop, and I found out that MacBooks' M1 or newer processors (especially the Pro versions) are very powerful for Machine Learning tasks. Moreover, its specs suggests a high performance FEA capabilities. So I'm considering it, not sure because of Apple's prices.
    A good feature I appreciate in Macbook Pros is the XDR display. It's hard to find HDR displays on laptops. This is a good thing too for streaming and also for professional color grading and editing.

    Shapr 3D is a really good app as well for 3D modeling on a Mac. Free for students and I’ve used it for 3D prints as well. Personally I wish I would’ve went with a Microsoft pc for college but I do love my MacBook for everything else. Not being able to use solid works and inventor in my senior year has been somewhat of a detriment. Main reason I got a MacBook was for longevity as I’ve had mine for 7 years and it’s running stronger than ever

    for those who use Archicad like us, the choice of Mac seems logical... given that Archicad was born 100% together with Mac. The problem is for other types of software that are used in an architectural studio, such as cad dwg or quantity takeoffs. Every three or four years, when we have to renew our PCs, we think it's the right time to switch to Mac, but then we never do it because the right balance can never be found between cost (including maintenance, which on Mac is terribly expensive) and software compatibility

    I'm a civil engineering student, and I was thinking of buying the M1 MacBook Pro 14" (mainly for the battery life and the portability), but I must admit, switching from Windows to MacOS is pretty scary for me. The main concern I have as a civil engineering student is the software compatibility on the MacOS. I have been doing a lot of research on it, but I seem to get a 50-50 answers. Could you or anyone else advise me on this. Thank you.

    • @isa_L
      @isa_L Год назад +4

      i said go for windows, you cant just fix software compatibility using a tweak in newer gen MacBook (M1 and M2),
      the only fix for this issue is dev of these apps must rewrite all the codes in ARM language and the reason why they dont do it is because you cant just rewrite or "convert" millions of code in different programming languages and call it a day.
      my brother is an Architect, he already tried M1 mac Pro to run AutoCad, mathCad, and some FEM and Laser Leveling Device, and he realizes he cant install driver in mac, and M1 cant run Bootcamp or rosetta.

      Bad idea. People have tried before and it turns out bad.
      - Parallel reduces Macbook performance by nearly 30%.
      - M1 Air doesn't have the GPU horsepower to do the work on a professional level.
      - 8GB is far too low for any professional work, especially for engineering. RAM will get used up and the laptop will start pulling from the SSD.
