I'm pretty sure it's a combo (of Nate's parents' letting him down), but MOSTLY "older Nate" looking back with regrets about how he let himself down. Heartbreaking stuff. Masterful stuff.
Yes! I always thought the part he raps is his younger self talking about his life with his parents/family and the older Nate is singing his apologies for letting himself down at that time...
This is what Nate said about the meaning behind the song: “I mean, all my music’s pretty personal, but for this song specifically, kinda got two meanings for me. I’m kind of like, a perfectionist, and so I feel like I constantly am letting myself down, like nothing’s ever good enough…but also, just kind of growing up as a kid, feeling like I wasn’t really listened to, or my voice wasn’t really worth much. So, this song kind of has several meanings for me, but, a lot of my music has a lot of different meanings for, you know, different parts of my life.” But yes, the older man is himself. NF also shares in future track “Nate” this last verse :”I wish that I could look at you with empathy Sometimes I feel like I've become what you were scared to be Which makes it really hard to look at you with sympathy 'Cause if I'm feeling bad for you, then I have to feel bad for me And that's just something I feel like we don't deserve That's why I'm always looking down on you, I know it hurts I'm sure you have a lot of questions I've been tryna search to find us both some answers I'll be here for you if things get worse” This explains why he feels he shouldn’t help his younger self get out of the mess he’s in. LOVE your reactions man, keep up the amazing work!
I always saw it as the older Nate singing to himself, looking back at all the moments he thinks he failed and apologizing. For when he was drowning under the pressure, to the crash, to when he felt like he killed and buried the person he used to be. From the way the older actor stands out from the background, the tattoo on his arm, to the boots that NF wears, he's the spitting image in my mind.
Oh man, this made me cry like baby! I have felt like I have failed myself and others many times in the course of my life and it hit hard! 😢😢🤧 BTW, you ARE my favorite reactor❣️❣️🍊🍊
This was my very first NF song I heard and I was instantly hooked. I was going through some shit and it resonated so much. It restored my faith in the power of music. He is MY GOAT and Therapist.
AB, isn't this journey amazing!? I am telling you what I am a HUGE fan of Stevie Nicks , Prince, Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, and a few others, and I have NEVER been more invested in any of their catalogs like I have with NF's. I have listened to every album beginning with Momentsand on. I took my 11 & 13 year old grandsons to see him in concert last September and we had a blast. He is so good! You have surpassed my other favorite NF reactors now! Keep it up!
I do have to say AB always makes me smile while listening to REAL music. Lost my brother on Wednesday and getting a daily does of this man giving me much needed smiles is appreciated! Keep this up
Great reaction as always Nf once said that it can be both it has multiple meaning to him it could mean older nate looking at younger nate and how he feels like he let himself down and also look back and see how he feels about his childhood and his parents but he also said that the music he rights is up for interpretation and when you listen to it you can put it into your own prospective and apply it to you own life
Loving the reactions. REMEMBER THIS WILL BE YOUR FAVORITE!! P.S would love for you to react to sik world. Ivan b. Witt lowery. And Lucidous!!! Keep up the great reactions!!!
I’m shocked that you haven’t heard this song … I was sure you be like I’ve heard this.. this was one oh his first song I heard on the radio .. when I heard it after I found NF I was like that’s NF …
This is definitely a banger, not my personal favorite, but this helped skyrocket his career as it went “triple platinum “ and a lot of non-NF fans got exposed to him
It’s definitely one of his top songs but certainly not my top 5, makes me wonder why do you think this song exploded the way it did and why did this song specifically get radio play?
@@2491kridge probably bc it’s got a catchier hook, and is a little more casual listener friendly. Most people prob just hear it and like the smooth chorus, assume it’s a basic relationship song, etc. A lot of his songs are so deep and have meaning and references back to precious songs that most people don’t know what it’s actually saying. I know most the people I’ve shown NF too like it, and then when I show them this song they go “Oh that’s him? I know that song!”
@@MansterBear yeh for sure, I’ve definitely showed people NF before and then when they hear this song they go “OOO I’ve heard this before”, and like you said it’s one of those songs that you can listen to without ever hearing any of his other songs and you can just vibe out to and relate
AB, don't fret about dissecting and trying to figure out the meaning of this song, or any other NF tracks... NF's content is often complex, deeply personal and introspective. I enjoy your content and perspective.
Great job breaking it down! As you look back thru these albums and as you go to new albums you’ll see they are all enter connected as one story! I so enjoy ☺️ you going on the NF journey! Love ❤️ this album but I still can’t wait till you get to The Search album!!
I honest to God believe this is another connection to when he burries fear in his back yard in INTRO III….and he let fear down….holding onto fear through his entire life…
This song is exclusively about his dad (Biological). His dad said that line to Nate, "I wish I could say I'm proud." Nate in the casket is Nate saying to his dad, I am dead to you. It is an anger AND a sadness towards his dad. The woman at the end saying Nathan is his mom's spirit/ voice.
It’s a song to his past self. He feels like he let his past self wants down. But the way he writes everything it has a double meaning with his parents.
I feel the old man is actually nf and it's about letting himself down thats what's exciting about reaction videos and especially nfs music because we all interpret things differently
Remember back in Intro lll he said he wrote a song about “John” but fear didn’t like it. If I’m not mistaken “John” is his dad and this song is about him.
All of the vocals are Nate’s, just tuned. I think it’s the future him reflecting on points of his life when he let himself down. P. S. This is one of his few tracks that actually got a tiny bit of radio time.
It's future Nate looking back on his life and all of the times he felt like he was drowning/suffocating/being buried and couldn't do anything about it and still feeling like he let his younger self down.
The old man is Nate himself reflecting on his life the young boy drowning then his teen life burning in the car and then his present self in the casket the home is his own head and all the fear anger and his emotions saying they had memories and were friends now that they are old but that wasn’t the case just like how when we reflect on the past we remember only the good things or make it seem good on hindsight cause the fear and anger cause him problems he might feel like he failed in life but from fears prospective it brought him fame and a career cause all his raps are based on what he feels.
These are all good questions for NF. It seems to me he leaves a lot open for the listener to decide. But, in some fashion it is older Nate feeling like he let himself down in certain instances through out his life.
I believe it was mostly supposed to be older nf apologizing to himself for not letting himself live the way he wants. My biggest clue on that is everything he talks about sounds mostly like self reflection and the album title is perception so it sounds to me like this is his perception of his feelings when he reflects on his life.
whether you do it during or after this you should react to his song called chasing-demo, it came out before the cloud's mixtape. but i think the reason he didn't put it in there is he didnt think it was good enough. if you don't do a reaction for it that's fine. but definitely give it a listen
5 o'clock? That's over 3 1/2 hours still?!?! *sighs* Okay, I will try to be patient. I have seen this video SO many times and just the other day something about it hit me differently. Can't WAIT to hear your insight!!
@@ABtheKreator FINALLY got to watch!! GREAT reaction, love your facial expressions!! I think part of it is fear and him having a conversation in the future, maybe. All the events are fear related... drowning, being in a burning car, death. Note the REAL tattoo on his right forearm... key that it must be older Nate. Soooooo many ways to go with this one.
All I hear is TRAUMA. I also agree with others who have already said it appears older NF is talking to younger NF. It's pretty typical for an adult who went through childhood trauma to blame themeselves for everything, including not being able to save their younger self from what they went through.... "I don't see you like I should You look so misunderstood And I wish I could help But it's hard when I hate myself"
No and no....He's talking about himself. He let himself down as a person. I think this song represents NF feeling like he's let himself down, like it's his older self looking back on his younger years. He's realizing he just stood back and let his real, or good, or important parts of himself "die".

Wow thanks 🙏🏾
No problem guys! I always get to videos late so people always explain it first so I finally got the chance with this one 😂😂
yeah you are reaching a bit too hard on this one
That was Nate (voice electronically manipulated) singing the child's voice in the beginning
Yes, you nailed… old NF feeling like he let his younger self down… old man has NF’s tattoo on his forearm
Yeeesssssssirrrr lol 😂 thanks
Unless someone else is credited in the title as a feature, the singer is always Nate even on the pitched voices.
I think they played this on the radio for half a second, then they couldnt handle the rest of NF!!! Hahaha
