Many of these comments are from many years ago. I saw this when it first aired in the 90’s and I thoroughly enjoyed the show. It’s been over 30 years and the world sure has changed so much and Sandra Dee passed away almost 30 years ago. I read Dodd Darin’s book “Dream Lovers” it gave much insight about his parents. I’d like to purchase it and read it again. Love her or dislike Sally Jesse, she was on the air for many years. I watched her and lots of other talk show hosts back then. Comedy: he played Mary Tyler Moore's date in an episode of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." One of my favorite "Bold Ones" has Saxon's Dr. Stuart preparing his patient (guest star Tisha Sterling in a stellar performance) whose malady is causing her to go blind; a truly heartbreaking episode where Saxon's 'bedside manner' as a skilled surgeon is called into play in 'What's the Price of a Pair of Eyes?' . . . "The Virginian"'s Sara Lane (Elizabeth Granger, ranch owner's 18-year old daughter) grows up right in front of the audience's eyes when she has her first, serious love story via guest star Saxon's reformed outlaw who guides her -- physically and emotionally -- through the rugged mountains following a stagecoach accident that's blinded her ('Vision of Blindness'). And while considered by his peers as being one of 'the nicer guys' in Hollywood, his acting prowess seemingly makes him tailor-made for playing 'bad guys' in the proliferation of cop shows such as "The Streets of San Francisco," ""Police Story," "The Rookies," "Banyon," "Ironside." Oh my I just found this. It made my day. I saw the original movie as a young girl and till this day I talk about this movie to everyone. Love sandra Dee ..........disapointed in the Interview; all sally does is interrupt her, when sandra is sharing her thoughts... lots of respect for sandra...
She did it all the time! Can see why her show is no longer on the air! Horrible interviewer! I see so many interviewers make the same mistake of interrupting the person they are interviewing! They make the interview all about “THEM” instead of the person they are interviewing! “THEY” want to be the “big star” monopolizing the conversation & doing all the talking! Sally was so irritating because seeing poor Sandra Dee passed away, we will never get a chance to hear “her amazing stories” sadly, ever again!
@@karenstrycharz1499 Not only that but Sally interrupts Sandra from answering the question from the first guy in the audience. That was a really important question. Sally just seemed to be all about herself and bringing on more celebrities instead of letting Sandra Dee address real issues that she was willing to talk about.
She went through a lot with a dominating mom and abusive stepfather - and a controlling husband name Bobbie Darin. It all bothers me how she was vulnerable to the world and to Bobbie.
They were “my favorites too!” My two all time favorite actresses along with Hayley Mills! Those three I adored! I loved Shirley Temple movies as a little girl , watching all her movies with my dear mother( miss her & my Nana) along with Tammy movie mom loved when I was ten yrs old. I was so devastated when both Sandra Dee & Annette Funicello sadly died so young. Now, only Hayley Mills is left of my teenage idols ( role models) I adored! Loved them all & miss them!
I thought she was very brave here. Never mind about the Hollywood glitz and glamour. She came through as a recovering individual with tremendous poise and determination. Well done, Sandra ! loved you in 'A Summer Place'....
I agree with you, although that movie, "A Summer Place" kind of upset me, since I was a Sandra Dee fan and young, and it seemed too real to me. I don't think I saw it in the theater, probably afterwards somewhere, maybe on TV, but it had some strong scenes in it -- I just remember Sandra and Troy there and Sandra telling her mother and an angry father: "we didn't do anything" repeatedly, and not much else about it. I don't know how it turned out! But I always liked and admired Sandra Dee. And of course, she and Bobby were the "it" couple of the early to mid-'60s. I never knew about her health problems until much later.
So happy to find these of Sally's shows about Sandra Dee, adorable Sandra, will always love her. I only wish she could have given us a lifetime more of her movies. James Darren and John Saxon...the two handsomest men in Hollywood ever!
Who couldn't Love Sandra Dee,a very warm experience to listen to her,i grew up in N.J. so to hear her talk about, Camden, & so many good friends &fans, she will be missed,,by all of the above!!!!💕💕💕💕💔💔💔🤗🤗🤗🤔🤔🤔🤔👍👍👍
Fabulous. Thank you for sharing. This is such a joy to those of us who remember and still love Sandra Dee and this era. Gidget, Shelly Fabares, James Darren, Bobby Rydell... And of course her wonderful, talented husband, Bobby Darin.
I love Sandra Dee and the role she played in Imitation of Life. She is so down to earth and humble and sweet. SJR kept interrupting her and she couldn't finish her thoughts...😐
Oh gosh!!!!! I always loved James Darren! He looks just as amazing now as he did when he was young! How I lived him in the movie “GIDGET” with Sandra Dee! Cutest movie!
Shelly Fabares was also one of my favorites as a child. She had that dynamite hit Johnny Angel. But Sandra Dee is one of the most beautiful people Hollywood ever produced, she looked as good as Elvis and just blew us away .And Bobby Darin had so many great hits, and died to young. People just looked better more healthy or something?
💙☃️💙She’s a Beautiful Lady. If I had seen this show, back in the day, it would have made my life easier. Even if i had read her book, it would have helped me. She is soooo brave here - talking about the abuses.💙🙏💙Peace💙☃️💙❄️💙🙏💙😷
As much as I like Bobby Rydell and Shelley Fabares, I wish either they would've just been brought on to visit with Sandra outside the show or maybe make this show into a 2 hour special. That way EVERYONE got to talk. Sandra could get her thoughts together, could answer some questions, and she and Saxon could've shared their experiences together. I can't believe that John Saxon, Dee's 3 time co-star whom she has an upcoming play with, doesn't get to talk at all! After taking the time to come to show and even bringing flowers! What a waste! I wish it would've just been limited to Sandra, James, and John together.
I remember watching this when it originally aired on TV. Though I don't remember the date or year exactly . . . It must have been around early to mid-80's. I hope she enjoyed many happy, memorable moments full of the joys of love. I pray the remainder of her years were spent feeling better about herself, and successful in overcoming her addiction, and better health. God bless her loved ones, family, friends, and fans.
I feel badly for what this woman kept bottled up inside her. She is as fragile as a potato chip, and she is so loved by everyone. She died in 2005. I would have enjoyed seeing her work
Sally was a horrible interviewer! Let her finish a sentence & answer a question. So much information was lost & never answered due to Sally cutting her off.... REPEATEDLY!
She tried to monopolize the conversation & push her into talking about things she thought would “drum up ratings/publicity” & not what we all wanted to hear about her exciting recollections. Sally kept interrupting & talking over Sandra too & cutting her off, mid sentence ( so darn rude ) & drove me crazy, too. I so wanted to hear Sandra’s memories & now sadly, Sandra is gone!😢
I can't watch Kevin Spacey now, since the accusations. In fact I barely watch any movies though I think Sandra Dee was a good actress and person, I respect her.
She was in one of my all time favorite movies. Can not believe they did not mention it. It was called "Imitation of Life." Our parents let us watch their favorrite movies, and this wass one of the best. I will never forget it.
For those of you who are confused by the heading, John Saxon appears on the stage in the last few minutes of the clip. James Darren came on stage in the previous clip. It's clear that Saxon cared very deeply for Sandra.
So sad the way people can hurt you in this world you never no what has happen to people sandra was alway so bright and sunny beautiful her pass so dark the movie are movie and real life is real sometimes very dark i hope the after life is peace this life is up and down and all a around until we are taken off rip sandra dee bright star ❤❤❤.
Shelley Fabares is the prettiest of that era!! I had never heard of Sandra Dee but did of Shelley Fabares through "Coach", one of my favorite shows ever! I'm from a different generation but love the old shows.
I had such a crush on him too! Him “pinning” Sandra Dee made my heart beat faster! Oh gosh.... Shelley Fabares coming out on this stage too( Annette Funicello’s best friend & her maid of honor in Annette’s wedding) was so exciting , as well for I loved Shelley too! These are all my dear favorites from the ‘60’s!
Sandra Dee was really a talented actress. I thought that she should have been nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for Imitation of Life, with Lana Turner. Two other actresses from the movie, Juanita Moore and Susan Kohner, were nominated, but Sandra should've been, too. That movie showed me that she was more than just a teen idol. She was a real actress as well.
i watched susan kohner in sal mineo/james darren movie of GENE KRUPA's life tonight. i didn't recognize her, but did HER VOICE from imitation of life! bgordon, ames, iowa
Sandra, I have experienced what you have by another male relative. How I wish there were people who loved me the way you are loved. You deserve it. I love you too 😘🤗
Sandra Dee is one of those rare people that you never forget. I wrote a poem in tribute to her because she was more than a person, she became a symbol of an era in entertainment. The rarest thing of all.
This just breaks my heart....he loved her...but couldn't have her..(when they made Gidget) they were going in different directions but..I would have loved if they got together when they were young. Her death is just so sad. Isn't it amazing how our feelings can never change about certain things.
I think Darren turned out fine. He married again not too long after anyway. John Saxon is the one I feel really bad for. He gave Sandra his number when they did "Love Letters" together. He said she could call anytime and they would get together. Sadly, she never called. John's last divorce was in 1992 and he didn't remarry again until 2008, 3 years after Sandra's death. I think it might've been a lovely relationship if only Sandra would've struck up the nerve to call him. Might have brought her some much needed peace and happiness. So frustrating!
No need for rude remarks. Sally was only doing her job. I loved Sandra Dee. I loved the movie where Kevin Spacey did the real life movie of Sandra Dee & Bobby Darrin. His life was extended for longer that we thought. By the Sea. What was the name of the movie -- Anyone know? So glad Sandy got to re-unite with all the lovely people on the show. I love them all. You are gone home now Sandy, but, you'll always be in our hearts. R.I.P.
oh my goodness - my 12 y.o. idols. i loved John Saxon - he was just soo gorgeous and still was here. and what a surprise to see Bobby Rydel. Do you guys remember that hair of his? - i don't know what you would call it, but it was came down over his forehead - oh my - fluttering heart - LOL. I remember Paul Anka, too. I had this tinny radio and i would read these teenage magazines. When Sandra Dee and Bobby got married, I was soo excited - what a dream couple. . . jeeminy, 12 years old. i was so upset when Bobby died. He would have been like Tony Bennet is now, I'm sure. i am amazed that Sandra had all those problems - and i'm so glad she recovered and went on to enjoy her life. Here's to Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee as I knew them. . . at 12, i can't believe i was ever that young - when you have problems of your own, it is good to have people like them - thank you . . . :}
Why would Sally Jessy Raphael keep surprising Sandra Dee like that?..one guest star after another...Terrible!!!!..and she never got to finish a thought...she was interrupted so much..wow!..sad!
It bugged me that Sally kept interrupting Sandra too! We weren’t there to listen to Sally but to hear Sandra talk & her recollections!!! After 20 yrs of Sandra Dee not giving interviews , Sally should have kept her mouth shut & let Sandra steer the conversation where Sandra wanted to go, not “SALLY.” She kept steering it back to her being molested & her alcoholism, which to touch on it briefly, letting Sandra talk is fine but Sandra had so many other wonderful stories & recollections we would love to have heard about, too. It was so irritating w/ Sally interrupting her & having those in audience come up( which was sweet mind you) but here she had, James, Shelley etc on stage with her but Sally just didn’t let her talk. Would have loved to hear about their making the movie Gidget too & their recollections! What a shame, for Sandra has sadly passed away since this interview & those recollections will sadly never be told. May Sandra Rest In Peace!❤️
I really wish someone else had done the interviewing. I watched all 3 parts and was very disappointed that she didn't get to finish her thoughts. We never really heard how the incest impacted her marriage or what Bobby Darin was like as a husband. Asking her intimate questions, after the appearance of other guests changed the tone of the show, was in such bad taste. I wish Oprah or Dr Phil had done this interview instead. We learned nothing new about her at all.
+BLFulle I have to agree. I mean it was okay seeing the others but I would have rather just had the one on one with Sandra. But really Sally wasn't the best interviewer.
OMG...Sally Jessy brings on James Darren for light moments, then, suddenly, an audience member is asking about her incest experience, as she tries to answer, Sally interrupts her, then she flips to introducing Shelley. I mean, what the f***!!! I've been watching interviewers since the days of Phil Donohue and never have I ever heard such a horrendous, disrespectful interview. And the show's hairdresser? Seriously, was that the best he could do. We have such great memories of Sandra Dee....I wonder what she thought of that mess. She certainly was gracious to put up with it. I mean, I don't she ever got to finish a thought with all the interruptions. Guess we know why we don't see Sally anymore. Yikes! No one but Oprah should have done this interview.
BLFulle. What details do you wanna know about her sexual molestation?? Its hard enough talking about it . Secondly; that's non of your business . She openly talked about her sexual molestation and that's hard to do , you figure out the rest .
that bothers me too. Sandra was in the middle of answering an important question and Sally interrupted her with the introduciton of Shelley, which frankly I could do without all together. I really don't care what Shelley has to say. It's NOT about her!
There really was a special chemistry between Sandra and James. He seemed protective of her. If the fates had been kinder to her, they would have gotten together in '59 and very likely would have stayed together.
Sandra’s mom disabled her for life I am glad she married Bobby and he gave her Dodd. Dodd was definitely there for his mom. People showered her with love in this video, I’m glad!
I am a Gidget fan and saw it five times the first day it was in theater which meant I was at the movies all day since they had double features then. When I heard Sandra DEE got married I told my sister...she made a mistake...she was supposed to marry James Darren, not Bobby Darrin......it took me awhile to realize Bobby was da man. Loved this time in our lives and Gidget is still one of my go to movies when I need to be pepped up. All my grands have sat through it with me several times.
I believe this was longer than 8 yrs ago but it really doesn’t matter. Always adored Sandra Dee. I had no idea how bad life was for her from her past. My only wish was that I wish could of seen this whole program from beginning to end. I truly enjoyed it.
I think Sandra Dee never really knew how much influence she had on us when we were young. I always admired her and never knew about her physical and mental-health problems until after she was gone. I loved her in those movies she made, I probably didn't see them when they were in the theater, but later) and when she and Bobby were THE "it" couple of the 1960's, I probably wasn't aware of that either, until later. I guess she became pretty reclusive after she and Bobby divorced, concentrating on raising their son. I don't care for her hair-do above, but maybe that was the style then. It is so "un-moveable" compared to her hair of the '60's! But it's also kind of shocking to see James Darren with gray hair! Well, we all age, but we only see ourselves in the mirror, not how other's see us.
6.10.2020 today; he's now 84!! i watched a clip of him singing in 2011; still got that great voice & looks!! betty gordon, ames, iowa lifelong fan since gidget/tj hooker. james was in the movie SAL MINEO.... GENE KRUPA story tonight.
“The Reluctant Debutante” was right up there with “Gidget” in story quality, casting and acting, although less known. Both Sandra and John Saxon were excellent in it.
great find! there's a movie that she and bobby darin starred in called "that funny feeling". i think it's a really funny movie that i don't hear much about. i recommend it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm so so happy that I found this interview with Sandra Dee, along with my Biggest Crush Ever, James Darren!!! However, How Much Time did James Darren get to even speak during this entire episode??! I don't know about Sandra and James, but I was under the assumption, that this interview was going to be with Sandra and James Darren together (Moondoggie!). SO Happy to have seen them and finally together, but.. So very disappointed in this entire interview Sally!!
Did she and James Darren date after this reconnection, I wonder? She did seem so nice and down-to-earth, no diva attitude, despite her stardom! It's funny how some of our stars who were our All-American sweethearts," beautiful, carefree, and outgoing on film, have had such troubled childhoods--Sandra, Maureen "Marcia Brady" McCormick, and Pam "Baywatch" Anderson! I guess it only fueled their desire to escape, and is a testament to their acting abilities!
+myeyesinside out @myeyesinside out, I noticed in many James Darren related videos, you comment on them. Are you a big James Darren fan, if so, I don't blame you! I also noticed in one with James and Barbara McNair You Tube video you had addressed how you heard a rumor(s) that the 2 hooked up! I would love to know more, like how did you hear about it! From the information I found of the 2, I kinda think it was true! From what you know about James, would you say he may've during his early days in his marriage to his wife since 1960, he may've had an open-marriage? Which if true, may explain in this appearance with Sandra Dee, he wasn't wearing his ring and wanted to "pen" her and etc. You know getting flirty with her and so forth.
We all come to this life to learn how to love and to fight and beat our demons and each and everyone of us will have battle with them..Death just moves us up to another level in the game is all....that is the game of life.
This is so tone deaf and exploitive. The way interviewer Sally Jesse Raphael orchestrated this whole thing to make a big public production out of the most intimate and vulnerable details of Sandra Dee's life was opportunist and callous beyond words. She made a self-serving spectacle of the unspeakably difficult and soul killing experiences this beautiful soul endured. My heart goes out to you Sandra Dee wherever you are. The beautiful theme from "A Summer Place" brings hope you're in a better place

Yeah that's Sally for ya how rude.

JAMES DARREN WAS STILL HANDSOME EVEN AS HE GOT OLDER
Oh gosh!!!!! I always loved James Darren! He looks just as amazing now as he did when he was young! How I lived him in the movie “GIDGET” with Sandra Dee! Cutest movie!
GREAT post - can hardly believe Sandra is gone - breaks my heart. such a darling person. thank you thank you.
Life was way more wholesome then.
So nice that she had this moment with these people.
I agree and could live without all the negative comments here.
@@stj971Amen!
A Summer Place, Gidget and Imitation of Life, 3 of my favorite movies of all time ❤
I love all of them!!! ❤❤❤❤....
Hands down, the cutest movie actress ever. Like a living doll. Had no idea what she endured.
Shelley was so LUCKY.....She Played In 3 films with the most talented & beautiful man & a voice was so perfect...ELVIS PRESLEY....
She looks amazing. You would never know she went through so many trials.

She so put together, I really enjoyed this interview.
Credits say this originally aired in 1991.
REPEATEDLY!
I agree! I know Sally was trying to move things along but, she rushed her too much.
THE KEVIN SPACEY MOVIE ABOUT THE LIFE OF BOBBY DARIN WAS CALLED "BEYOND THE SEA".EXCELLENT PORTRAYAL OF BOBBY BY KEVIN SPACEY,HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
But the actress who played Sandra failed to capture her.
Kevin Espace is a man bad, 😵😖
I can't watch Kevin Spacey now, since the accusations. In fact I barely watch any movies though I think Sandra Dee was a good actress and person, I respect her.
I don't think I could watch it knowing what a creep Spacey is.
She was in one of my all time favorite movies. Can not believe they did not mention it. It was called "Imitation of Life." Our parents let us watch their favorrite movies, and this wass one of the best. I will never forget it.
I met Jimmy Darren on the set of "TJ Hooker," and he was an hilarious guy. Very funny.
RIP, Sandra Dee, and thank you for your heroism.
He was sooooo handsome!
just love her sandra Dee
For those of you who are confused by the heading, John Saxon appears on the stage in the last few minutes of the clip. James Darren came on stage in the previous clip. It's clear that Saxon cared very deeply for Sandra.
Muirmaiden 🌩
John Saxon appeared in films with Sandra multiple times and should have had a larger role in this show.
Geeze she was Loved...I always Loved her..My Favorite Movie she did, was A Summer Place.
Shelley Fabares is the prettiest of that era!! I had never heard of Sandra Dee but did of Shelley Fabares through "Coach", one of my favorite shows ever! I'm from a different generation but love the old shows.
Wow! What a story! I had no idea that she had gone through so much. Incredible!!!
This interview is a disgrace, Sally what's her face was so disrespectful...
Oh my god, I was so so in love with James Darren when I was a kid its not funny. I can't believe he's so handsome still at his age.
You realize this was 25 years ago, right?
He's still alive and he's 82.
Yes he is fabulous! I had a big crush on him too...wow
I agree. Sandra was an excellent actress. She was amazing in A Summer Place, too, among others.
@@waynej2608 Yes, I still have never seen A Summer Place, but would like to. I'm especially interested if Dee did good work in it.
What wonderful women in this episode - I love them all
I loved Sandra Dee. Thank you for posting! Janice
Sandra, I have experienced what you have by another male relative. How I wish there were people who loved me the way you are loved. You deserve it. I love you too 😘🤗
I loved her in A Summer Place!
I love Sandra Dee!
Loved Sandra,, James Darren, she should have marrrried him he is gorgeous....❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
She was so beautiful and sweet. Loved Gigot as a teenager and her in it!
Sandra Dee is one of those rare people that you never forget. I wrote a poem in tribute to her because she was more than a person, she became a symbol of an era in entertainment. The rarest thing of all.
What a great interview. Thank you so much for posting this.

Sandra Dee the sweetest girl in the world ..!
+J Beyond the Sea
Beyond the Sea
I often thought that John Saxon deserved an A-List career rather than the B- one he had.
But what a great b movie career he's had!
He was real impressive in The Appalosa, with Brando.
oh my goodness - my 12 y.o. idols. i loved John Saxon - he was just soo gorgeous and still was here. and what a surprise to see Bobby Rydel. Do you guys remember that hair of his? - i don't know what you would call it, but it was came down over his forehead - oh my - fluttering heart - LOL. I remember Paul Anka, too. I had this tinny radio and i would read these teenage magazines. When Sandra Dee and Bobby got married, I was soo excited - what a dream couple. . . jeeminy, 12 years old. i was so upset when Bobby died. He would have been like Tony Bennet is now, I'm sure. i am amazed that Sandra had all those problems - and i'm so glad she recovered and went on to enjoy her life. Here's to Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee as I knew them. . . at 12, i can't believe i was ever that young - when you have problems of your own, it is good to have people like them - thank you . . . :}
That was wonderful.Thank you!!
Excellent - brought back SO MANY memories of my youth
Sally makes for a horrible interviewer- She won't let anybody finish a damn answer. She keeps cutting people off- really annoying!!
Darreyl Henderson: She ire did! I really wish she had let Sandra tell us more about her and Bobby.
sure not ire
+Cathy Delorme. (Cocod) dwd9990,
Never liked "Salley"..ugg!
Darreyl Henderson Agree!
I was working and didn't see this interview. Thanks for posting!
john Fun.....Thanks for sharing this! She is still my favorite actress! I would like to see and know more about her!
Why would Sally Jessy Raphael keep surprising Sandra Dee like that?..one guest star after another...Terrible!!!!..and she never got to finish a thought...she was interrupted so much..wow!..sad!
They weren't even people she was friends with. Just people that were distant fans.
I know. Right? Sally is a horrible host & interviewer.
+BLFulle Yes Worst Interviewer Ever!!!
+BLFulle I have to agree. I mean it was okay seeing the others but I would have rather just had the one on one with Sandra. But really Sally wasn't the best interviewer.
+Shannon Lindley I agree. I have no patience with interviewers who interrupt.
She openly talked about
her sexual molestation and that's hard to do , you figure out the rest .
I was going to marry James Darrin when I was a KId. Still Handsome at his age
This is a important historical program thanks for posting it
Rest in peace, James Darren
that bothers me too.
Sandra dee still looks great after her problems; I have read her sons Bio,Dodd Mitchell Darin.
Wow! Remember when talk shows had substance and brought us these reunions. Not any more.
Sally I use to watch all your shows this one took the cake, I loved these four stars especially Sandra Dee, what a cutie she never changed😊
GENE KRUPA story tonight.
yes, sally's hair dressers did an awful job on her hair!! bg, iowa
How wonderful seeing all these great people. ..
I just watched Gidget 1959 "The Original" starring Ms. Sandra Dee on youtube And I Loved it!
Ditto!
"If A Man Answers, Hang Up" was much cuter but I loved them both.
Like every other teen boy of 14, I had the biggest crush on her. What a DOLL ! She was an important part of my teen years.
I feel like shelly does. Sandra we love you.
How did I miss this when I was a kid! Great set of guests.
Wow what wonderful people and stars ! (BRENDA CONSTABLE)
Shelly Fab and Sandra Dee lightful🥰❤️❤️
My god I still love him fell in love in the 70's looking at gidget reruns ,I'm 49 yrs now
+myeyesinside out @myeyesinside out, I noticed in many James Darren related videos, you comment on them.
Vile
Sandra didn't seem to have a problem w it,why do you??? 🤦
