Noname: Tiny Desk Concert

- Bobby Carter | April 3, 2017 - Here's a fun fact about Noname's Tiny Desk Concert: It almost didn't happen. Around the time of their D.C. stop, she (born Fatimah Warner) and her bandmates got their first dose of tour sickness. Thanks to rest, medicine and our mutual excitement, she made her way into the NPR offices the following day. If there ever was a 'Noname' way of doing things, this is definitely her signature method. It's in the way she's able to muster a smile while performing a heartbreaking tale of abortion. It's those sometimes bleak, melancholy lyrics over brilliant, colorful production.
These intriguing juxtapositions are what propelled Telefone to our top 50 albums of 2016. She prefaced her performance of "Reality Check" by saying: "I kind of talk in like, scramble-think, so hopefully you guys follow it." "Scramble-think" refers to the clever metaphors she weaves in detailing the many ways she's dodged destiny. On "Bye Bye Baby," she raps:
Somebody let the yellow in
Bye bye blue
I'm gonna fall in love again
These lyrics, their colors, represent the sector she commands in hip-hop today. The yellow: The bright side. (Of course, there's plenty of gloom and doom to rap about - especially coming from Chicago - but there's also plenty of light.)
There's an appropriate moment of silence in the office, before the applause, following her emotional medley. She asked us if we liked it. We loved it - and you likely will too.
Telefone is available now.

How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back? From Rico Nasty’s harassment from toxic Carti fans, to Saucy Santana's unapologetically femme aesthetics in a queerphobic industry, to the assault case that put Megan Thee Stallion’s entire image on trial, each episode of Louder Than A Riot - the second season of our investigative hip-hop podcast - unpacks the unspoken rules of rap that hold the entire culture back. Tap in to our first episode at n.pr/louder-season-2.

Jesus, attaching the same spiel to every NPR performance, going back like forever, it’s too much. Is your show tanking?? The 1st series was way better, btw!
Is this produced and directed by Black people, or is this white-written and performed rk further cast Black men as everyone's enemy? I'd imagine the former, but maybe you'll surprise me.
"How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back?" --- appropo that Noname hates her white fans & goes to predominantly white countries & is confused why most of her audience is white & says she will quit rapping if the majority of her listeners continue to be white. imagine being this racist & still being able to be hosted on respected platforms like Tiny Desk smh
Noname is beautiful on every level

She’s got a certain type of calm, chill charisma that mixes in an interesting way with her radical politics. She’s going places, whether that’s starting a new socialist society or just becoming a superstar I can’t tell yet, but Noname is on the rise.
Isn't it interesting though? It speaks to me strongly, like CHIKA. You can feel her-love for her community, her grief for her community, her longing for a better country. It keeps me coming back.

Noname, if u ever frequent RUclips comments I want you to know you’ve reached the ears and hearts of so many black kids and adults. You’ve inspired many of us to great and been a muse to us when we figured that chasing music or art in was nothing more than a pipe dream. U made it seem real, u made it seem possible.

Why hasn't NPR made an album for their Tiny Desks? Forget the totes and coffee mugs, cut an album and I'm sure they'd have no problem meeting their donation goals.
Licensing other people's music is expensive in its own right. They'd have to sign a different deal with each artist, and a lot of them don't want to appear on an album with someone else's music.
You can also listen to audio-only versions in their NPR Tiny Desk podcast. You can stream them or download them from iTunes. You can even make your own album out of your favorites!
Please please make an album of this music that feeds my soul from outside within. I needs this!
@@alwaysfallingshort Or they might write it off as a donation knowing that it will be used for fundraising for NPR. Just one or two tracks for a space that gave them a platform when they needed it and that they may believe in? They may even see it as an extension of whatever deal they have to allow it on so many different platforms for streaming. You never know unless you ask.
