I love how a few of the fiends are just sort of weirdly wholesome. Like, the violence fiend comes across as just being sort of a chill person, and the angel devil is kind of pacifistic, and good old Beam is just the best boy in general.

Let's assume that Aki only touches his hand for 3 seconds, 3 seconds of contacts costs 2 months of the lifespans, so it will cost around a year of your total life spans just to be in physical contact with angel for 18 seconds. Average male life spans is around 72.75 worldwide, minus your current age (average age of anime fan is around 18-25), which mean you have around 47.75-54.75 years of lifespans to spare, 47.75*18 seconds = 859.5 seconds 859.5/60 14.325 minutes 54.75*18 seconds = 985.5 seconds 985.5/60 = 16.425 minutes In conclusion, you get to pound that angel bussy for 14-16 minutes straight before losing your life, which is more than enough for me cause wouldn't even last 10 seconds in him

I've always thought that Kobeni was contracted with the Luck Devil. Makes the most sense with all the terrible things happening around her, keeping her alive while feeding off of her constant anxiety and fear.

50:30 Just a reminder that aside from Denji, we shouldn’t trust when people say that Makima saved them. When she’s attacking with the other hybrids, they’re all saying that she saved them (same with Angel), and before Makima convinces Aki to join a contract, he wonders why he liked her so much. It’s implied that she brainwashes them all into loving her and believing she saved them when most of the time (as we see with Angel and the other hybrids) she’s actually the one who subdued them. Denji is the only exception (not really) cuz he just went along with her, so she didn’t have to subdue him like the others. She “saved” him by forcing him into a job, which gave him his basic necessities.
Fun fact, Aki is hinted at being the gun fiend from the start. His name is a reference to the gun 'AK 47', plus the way he wears his hair is a reference to the grip of a gun. You can also see when he is the gun fiend his ponytail turns into an actual grip of a gun.

My fav theory about Kobeni is that her contract could be with the bad luck, misfortune or chaos devil. Firstly, during the dinner party when she says its a secret, it could be because in alot of cultures not saying certain things out loud avoids bringing bad luck. Then there's all the awful things in her life like her family, finances, the whole infinity devil story, vehicle collisions (lol), falling down, people around her dying, etc. are all misfortune...yet she survives. Another reason is when Kobeni is suddenly overpowered, after the public safety agents are shot in the widespread hit job, she was in such a state of shock from trauma which could be essentially an ult booster for the devils abilities. Its not solid but I like this better than alot of other theories I've heard about her.
My theory is that she doesn't have a contract with any devils and just got into it because of her physical prowess alone but since devil hunters without a devil contract are so rare himeno or makima told her to tell others she has a contract with a secret devil

It isnt stated what time periods japanese goverment, so they couldve easily taken her in when she just got reincarnated at least over a hubdred years ago as Makima was there during WW2. Also the President says she and specifically Makimas name when he says she has been always shadowing humanity implying she could be thousands of years old. Hell, it could also be over 200k years

Another interpretation of the Makima Metaphor that I'm moved by is just how the nature of her and Denji's relationship isn't just abusive/pedophilic in nature, but that it's also supposed to represent an abusive mother/child dynamic. There was a whole thread I read about it with a lot more detail, but essentially Fujimoto stated in an interview that he based their dynamic (Denji and Makima's) off of child abuse documentaries, Makima has many maternal motifs-- If the "ki" in Makima's name is "cut out" her name is Mama, when Makima reveals herself as the Control Devil all the chains come out of her womb, when Chainsaw Man appears during that anniversary chapter he has guts all over him, specifically one around his neck (much like an umbilical cord, called Nuchal Cord), Fujimoto also says in an interview "Just look at what Chainsaw's were originally created for" and they were created... for childbirth (shocking tbh I didn't even know that til he said it) Obv you can go on and on, but this reading of their relationship has always made my re-reads of Chainsaw Man all the more impactful. Also Fujimoto said in the same Interview that he said her name is based of "mama", he also said partly the reason Denji is so indatuated with her is due to him looking for a maternal figure subconciously. He is also in general just after the relationships and closeness he never had

Another theory as to why she says "Halloween" is that it is a subtle reference to Jujutsu Kaisen. Gojo's Domain Expansion "Unlimited Void" basically does the same thing that Cosmos does to her victims. And something very major goes down with Gojo on Halloween. Fujimoto and Akutami are both fans of each other's work so I wouldn't be surprised if this were the case.
spoilers down below for chapter 70+!!!! i think with the aki becoming destined to become the gun devil theory essentially stems with makima being in control of the gun devil from the very beginning of the story. makima planned to make the perfect family for denji so she could crush it all down and take it away from him, so aki becoming the gun fiend could also represent him being used as another tool for makima while also becoming the very thing he hates. it's very sad to see that aki's sacrifices was for nothing :(
i love the theory that kobeni is contracted with the black cat devil - from her superhuman agility to her insane luck, her battle characteristics line up with folk legends of cats almost perfectly. and while cats aren't known for their fearsomness, there's sillier devils in csm and some people are legitimately afraid of cats (especially black cats nd their association with witchcraft)
Considering how overall weak Kobeni's power is and how (if her bad luck is part of it) big the downside is, it does make sense for her contract to be with something not too feared.
I think the point "csm erased the sun" is definitely similar to him killing the Nazi devil. Makima tells Kishibe that among the things the Chainsaw Man erased was the Star that used to turn children insane when they look at it (or something along those lines) like you mentioned. Which I always interpreted as a second sun. This, in addition to Makima being able to remember the secret 6th sense that was also erased by the Csm makes me think she is actually ancient, like your second guess says.

I think the “no” was referring to when Denji asks Makima if in her perfect world would there be bad movies. This was the turning point for Denji being convinced he had to stop her. 11:57
It's also a really neat instance of Denji both being far smarter and vastly more emotionally intelligent than Makima gives him credit for and that just going over her head completely because she has this idealised version of Chainsaw Man in her head into which the real Denji simply does not factor. Excellent bit of character writing.

36:00 when you're talking about aki being destined to be the gun fiend, this is stemming from when he made his contract with the future devil, who laughed at his death and said it wouldn't cost much bc of how "funny" his death would be. which can be referencing one of 2 things, the gun fiend thing, when aki's entire life mission was to destroy it, only to become it, or that the boy he considered like a brother, the prolific chainsaw man who the future devil would also hate and fear, would kill him.
No, at that time he wanted to see it first-hand and stated that he would die in "The worst way possible" I don't know where or what translation your read where he said any of the above lines. There are multiple times and references to Aki becoming the gun devil especially when Kurose and Tendo drive him to the public safety building. Also it didnt just originally stem from the future devils contracts because absolutely nobody would have pinned down the exact route of plot except him either "Dying to the gun devil" or "Being killing by denji" they were more prominent theories in later chapters. The "Worst Way possible" was also referencing when Denji kills Aki and Future Devil states "You died in the worst way POSSIBLE for the chainsaw boy" but obviously it is probably nuancing to Aki dying as the Gun fiend.

all the characters are doomed by the narrative from the START and you as the reader realize at the same time as the characters, too late. and I adore the manga for that it was insane to read
for those of you who like csm and jjk i highly recommend hell’s paradise. it has a similar tone to csm and the world building is pretty cool (plus the art style is absolutely gorgeous). not to mention the anime should be coming out in a couple months so it’s perfect timing. it is a completed series last time i checked but i suggest you guys at least check it out 😭💗
Also highly recommend DanDaDan. The mangaka for that as well as Hells Paradise and SpyxFamily were all former assistants to Fujimoto. In my opinion DanDaDan has a fun/weird style very reminiscent of CSM while being it’s own story with its own atmosphere.
Don't forget they did the same for genshin impact The worst part is that you can tell they put some thought into it because the one's with the dirtiest butts are either zombies or cannonicaly don't shower
The fucking saddest thing about Aki is that if he wasn't so head strong and edgy when it came to the gun devil and getting power to hunt it down, the future devil would have straight up told him what was gonna happen. But he didn't care about how he was going to die. Depending on the details he could have even possibly learned what Mackima is in the second arc of the manga and possibly he wouldn't have become the gun fiend. Though this is a huge branch off from the timeline. Also I have no Idea if the future would just happen regardless of what Aki knows (self fulfilling prophecy style)
I’d imagine the future would stay the same the future devil offered to tell aki how he dies and doing that would probably make aki change that outcome but since he offered anyway I’d say the outcome was set in stone

The future devil telling aki how he's going to die reminds me of that scene in matrix where the oracle tells neo to watch out for the vase before he breaks it and then he subsequently breaks it while looking for the vase and the oracle tells him "now what's really going to boggle your mind is weather or not you would have broken the vase if I didn't say anything" Like the future devil clearly has a hand on aki's downfall as much as he pretends to be a neutral observer

Arai is actually all but confirmed to be the violence fiend. In CSM’s 11th ending, all of the original crew are shown with the sole exception being Arai, having been replaced by Galgali. Outside of Fujimoto coming out and announcing it I’d say that’s confirmation enough. Side note, have watched a couple of your vids and enjoyed them, but randomly seeing a CSM video by you pop up = instant sub.
I personally already consider this as the case, but there is still the possibility that the studio that made that episode's music video had a person that believed the Arai=Violence theory and wanted to showcase it in the ED. So it's not actually Fujimoto confirming it, but the people who made the ED.
Reze being connected to the darkness devil is a theory simply based on reze wearing a t-shirt with a bell at one point This same style of bell chimes when the darkness devil appears and his sword has some of these bells hanging from the hilt. Possible further links are that santa claus is possibly from the soviet Union and was looking for the darkness devil's power. Therefore, Reze also being a Soviet might have been hunting denji to use his heart in a similar deal.
The theory I heard about cosmo and ‘Halloween’ is like this: Cosmo grants the victim of her attack meta-knowledge, i.e. you know you’re in a comic called chainsaw man. Chainsaw man is heavily inspired by western horror films and tv shows. This western horror phenomenon is quite heavily intertwined with and often inspired by the holiday, Halloween. Essentially, the reason any given character exists in chainsaw man is because of Halloween.

Cosmos Fiend and the Halloween catchphrase, I think, is a Jujutsu Kaisen reference. The fear of the cosmos relates to Gojo Satoru's ability of Infinity, and the Shibuya Arc Incident, the arc where the villains conspire to capture and seal Gojo Satoru, occurs on the 31st of October in-universe.

I believe the "no" at 11:20 is what Himeno says in the part where she is visiting her old partners' graves. Kishibe leaves after telling her that she should take care of Aki and how he seems keen on collecting all of the gun devil pieces she just stands there for a while after he leaves, before saying something along the lines of "I don't want that happening", and then "no, no, no". I can't possibly think of anything else that would be "surface level" iceberg knowledge that this is referring to. If anyone is interested, this is from chapter 19 of part 1 of the manga and I believe it was animated in episode 7 of the anime.

For the question, "what darkness devil said to violence fiend", it's already been cleared up on twitter that it's just Fujimoto mixing random characters from the Katakana syllable chart, an offset writing system composed of different parts of complex Kanji. Fujimoto then inverts those Katakana characters vertically or horizontally to facilitate the meaning of incomprehensibility. Because darkness and the unknown go hand to hand. But yeah you're right about the meaning of the spell, it's most likely just a speech command to create holes in anything similar to Makima's "bang" word.
Regarding "Yuko is Denji": during the early chapters of part 2 there was a bit of a joke theory in the fandom that Yuko was transfem Denji because of their similar personalities and the fact that Denji hadn't appeared in the story yet at that point. People even jokingly called her "Denise" after it became a meme to call Denji "Dennis" because someone's autocorrect screwed up.
As for the Reze/ Darkness connection I believe it's regarding the fact that she was attempting to get CSM's heart, just like Santa Claus, and given that Santa Claus was in Russia as well as Reze being a Russian agent that she could have been the first attempt to fulfill the contract with the Darkness Devil.
I was extremely inebriated when I read CSM because I wanted to know what happened without spoiling all the details. It worked pretty well. But I still remember reading the chapter where Aki shows up as the Gun Fiend, and actually having to stop and go back to make sure I just read all that correctly.
I literally cried for 15 chapters ( a few hours straight), while reading that arc because I could sense something was extremely wrong once Makima was waving at Aki/Aki was going to die. And the moment Makima said it posssesed a dead body I was already done for, cuz her control ability is the perfect thing to arrange for that.
Makima's dogs could be symbolic of the weapon hybrids, but I doubt they are literally the dogs themselves, because devils active abilities are nullified upon death, as seen with the eternity devil, and makimas dogs are still in the care of denji by the end of chainsaw man part one.
I agree, plus it makes zero sense on how the dogs would be literal people. I think she just likes animals and since she can control most animes and humans it makes sense.

Also in the OP when they are sitting in the cinema we can see all the characters and even some of the fiends such as Beam or the Angel Devil but the Violence Fiend is missing but Arai is there.

Why are they saying Halloween? Because the veil between them and the knowledge of the cosmos has been lifted, and they keep asking themselves why, only to get more or less a jumbled answer: Halloween, meaning "the veils are thin like its Halloween"

50:30 Just a reminder that aside from Denji, we shouldn’t trust when people say that Makima saved them. When she’s attacking with the other hybrids, they’re all saying that she saved them (same with Angel), and before Makima convinces Aki to join a contract, he wonders why he liked her so much. It’s implied that she brainwashes them all into loving her and believing she saved them when most of the time (as we see with Angel and the other hybrids) she’s actually the one who subdued them. Denji is the only exception (not really) cuz he just went along with her, so she didn’t have to subdue him like the others. She “saved” him by forcing him into a job, which gave him his basic necessities.
Fun fact, Aki is hinted at being the gun fiend from the start. His name is a reference to the gun 'AK 47', plus the way he wears his hair is a reference to the grip of a gun. You can also see when he is the gun fiend his ponytail turns into an actual grip of a gun.

My fav theory about Kobeni is that her contract could be with the bad luck, misfortune or chaos devil. Firstly, during the dinner party when she says its a secret, it could be because in alot of cultures not saying certain things out loud avoids bringing bad luck. Then there's all the awful things in her life like her family, finances, the whole infinity devil story, vehicle collisions (lol), falling down, people around her dying, etc. are all misfortune...yet she survives. Another reason is when Kobeni is suddenly overpowered, after the public safety agents are shot in the widespread hit job, she was in such a state of shock from trauma which could be essentially an ult booster for the devils abilities.
Its not solid but I like this better than alot of other theories I've heard about her.

Another interpretation of the Makima Metaphor that I'm moved by is just how the nature of her and Denji's relationship isn't just abusive/pedophilic in nature, but that it's also supposed to represent an abusive mother/child dynamic. There was a whole thread I read about it with a lot more detail, but essentially Fujimoto stated in an interview that he based their dynamic (Denji and Makima's) off of child abuse documentaries, Makima has many maternal motifs-- If the "ki" in Makima's name is "cut out" her name is Mama, when Makima reveals herself as the Control Devil all the chains come out of her womb, when Chainsaw Man appears during that anniversary chapter he has guts all over him, specifically one around his neck (much like an umbilical cord, called Nuchal Cord), Fujimoto also says in an interview "Just look at what Chainsaw's were originally created for" and they were created... for childbirth (shocking tbh I didn't even know that til he said it)
Obv you can go on and on, but this reading of their relationship has always made my re-reads of Chainsaw Man all the more impactful.

Another theory as to why she says "Halloween" is that it is a subtle reference to Jujutsu Kaisen. Gojo's Domain Expansion "Unlimited Void" basically does the same thing that Cosmos does to her victims. And something very major goes down with Gojo on Halloween. Fujimoto and Akutami are both fans of each other's work so I wouldn't be surprised if this were the case.
It also coincides with her zombie aesthetic and being literally the mind blown emoji lol it's such a good design I refuse to get over it

i think with the aki becoming destined to become the gun devil theory essentially stems with makima being in control of the gun devil from the very beginning of the story. makima planned to make the perfect family for denji so she could crush it all down and take it away from him, so aki becoming the gun fiend could also represent him being used as another tool for makima while also becoming the very thing he hates. it's very sad to see that aki's sacrifices was for nothing :(
i love the theory that kobeni is contracted with the black cat devil - from her superhuman agility to her insane luck, her battle characteristics line up with folk legends of cats almost perfectly.
and while cats aren't known for their fearsomness, there's sillier devils in csm and some people are legitimately afraid of cats (especially black cats nd their association with witchcraft)
Considering how overall weak Kobeni's power is and how (if her bad luck is part of it) big the downside is, it does make sense for her contract to be with something not too feared.
I think the point "csm erased the sun" is definitely similar to him killing the Nazi devil. Makima tells Kishibe that among the things the Chainsaw Man erased was the Star that used to turn children insane when they look at it (or something along those lines) like you mentioned. Which I always interpreted as a second sun. This, in addition to Makima being able to remember the secret 6th sense that was also erased by the Csm makes me think she is actually ancient, like your second guess says.

It's also a really neat instance of Denji both being far smarter and vastly more emotionally intelligent than Makima gives him credit for and that just going over her head completely because she has this idealised version of Chainsaw Man in her head into which the real Denji simply does not factor. Excellent bit of character writing.

36:00 when you're talking about aki being destined to be the gun fiend, this is stemming from when he made his contract with the future devil, who laughed at his death and said it wouldn't cost much bc of how "funny" his death would be. which can be referencing one of 2 things, the gun fiend thing, when aki's entire life mission was to destroy it, only to become it, or that the boy he considered like a brother, the prolific chainsaw man who the future devil would also hate and fear, would kill him.
No, at that time he wanted to see it first-hand and stated that he would die in "The worst way possible" I don't know where or what translation your read where he said any of the above lines. There are multiple times and references to Aki becoming the gun devil especially when Kurose and Tendo drive him to the public safety building. Also it didnt just originally stem from the future devils contracts because absolutely nobody would have pinned down the exact route of plot except him either "Dying to the gun devil" or "Being killing by denji" they were more prominent theories in later chapters. The "Worst Way possible" was also referencing when Denji kills Aki and Future Devil states "You died in the worst way POSSIBLE for the chainsaw boy" but obviously it is probably nuancing to Aki dying as the Gun fiend.

Depending on the details he could have even possibly learned what Mackima is in the second arc of the manga and possibly he wouldn't have become the gun fiend. Though this is a huge branch off from the timeline.

Arai is actually all but confirmed to be the violence fiend. In CSM’s 11th ending, all of the original crew are shown with the sole exception being Arai, having been replaced by Galgali. Outside of Fujimoto coming out and announcing it I’d say that’s confirmation enough.

Reze being connected to the darkness devil is a theory simply based on reze wearing a t-shirt with a bell at one point This same style of bell chimes when the darkness devil appears and his sword has some of these bells hanging from the hilt. Possible further links are that santa claus is possibly from the soviet Union and was looking for the darkness devil's power. Therefore, Reze also being a Soviet might have been hunting denji to use his heart in a similar deal.
The theory I heard about cosmo and ‘Halloween’ is like this: Cosmo grants the victim of her attack meta-knowledge, i.e. you know you’re in a comic called chainsaw man. Chainsaw man is heavily inspired by western horror films and tv shows. This western horror phenomenon is quite heavily intertwined with and often inspired by the holiday, Halloween. Essentially, the reason any given character exists in chainsaw man is because of Halloween.

Cosmos Fiend and the Halloween catchphrase, I think, is a Jujutsu Kaisen reference. The fear of the cosmos relates to Gojo Satoru's ability of Infinity, and the Shibuya Arc Incident, the arc where the villains conspire to capture and seal Gojo Satoru, occurs on the 31st of October in-universe.

I believe the "no" at 11:20 is what Himeno says in the part where she is visiting her old partners' graves. Kishibe leaves after telling her that she should take care of Aki and how he seems keen on collecting all of the gun devil pieces she just stands there for a while after he leaves, before saying something along the lines of "I don't want that happening", and then "no, no, no". I can't possibly think of anything else that would be "surface level" iceberg knowledge that this is referring to. If anyone is interested, this is from chapter 19 of part 1 of the manga and I believe it was animated in episode 7 of the anime.

For the question, "what darkness devil said to violence fiend", it's already been cleared up on twitter that it's just Fujimoto mixing random characters from the Katakana syllable chart, an offset writing system composed of different parts of complex Kanji. Fujimoto then inverts those Katakana characters vertically or horizontally to facilitate the meaning of incomprehensibility. Because darkness and the unknown go hand to hand. But yeah you're right about the meaning of the spell, it's most likely just a speech command to create holes in anything similar to Makima's "bang" word.

Regarding "Yuko is Denji": during the early chapters of part 2 there was a bit of a joke theory in the fandom that Yuko was transfem Denji because of their similar personalities and the fact that Denji hadn't appeared in the story yet at that point. People even jokingly called her "Denise" after it became a meme to call Denji "Dennis" because someone's autocorrect screwed up.
As for the Reze/ Darkness connection I believe it's regarding the fact that she was attempting to get CSM's heart, just like Santa Claus, and given that Santa Claus was in Russia as well as Reze being a Russian agent that she could have been the first attempt to fulfill the contract with the Darkness Devil.
I was extremely inebriated when I read CSM because I wanted to know what happened without spoiling all the details. It worked pretty well. But I still remember reading the chapter where Aki shows up as the Gun Fiend, and actually having to stop and go back to make sure I just read all that correctly.
I literally cried for 15 chapters ( a few hours straight), while reading that arc because I could sense something was extremely wrong once Makima was waving at Aki/Aki was going to die.
And the moment Makima said it posssesed a dead body I was already done for, cuz her control ability is the perfect thing to arrange for that.
Makima's dogs could be symbolic of the weapon hybrids, but I doubt they are literally the dogs themselves, because devils active abilities are nullified upon death, as seen with the eternity devil, and makimas dogs are still in the care of denji by the end of chainsaw man part one.
I agree, plus it makes zero sense on how the dogs would be literal people. I think she just likes animals and since she can control most animes and humans it makes sense.
@@darkequinox_yt7613Fujimoto intentionally made her dogs eyes and expressions human-like to make her pets symbolic for her position for humans. And she can control them, so them making those faces could be intentional as a hint that she wants human connection.

Also in ED 11 of the Chainsaw Man Anime every character was shown besides Arai but instead we saw the Violence Fiend. Also in the OP when they are sitting in the cinema we can see all the characters and even some of the fiends such as Beam or the Angel Devil but the Violence Fiend is missing but Arai is there.

The Death Devil was mentioned by Yoshida in chapter 115. Nothing other than being name dropped, but the fact that a character who’s still shrouded in mystery, Yoshida, is the one name dropping it is definitely odd…
Its because death is a normal concept. While its weird how Yoshida says it, its not like it doesnt exist. Also Yoshida probably knows about Chainsaw Mans powers because hes close to Kishibe and Makima told Kishibe everything and therefore Yoshida knows.

The "Yuko is Denji" sport refers to a theory created early in part 2. People theorized that because we hadn't seen denji at all at the time, he was actually disguising himself as Yuko

Makima planned and manipulated Aki, saying they are after the gun devil, and getting closer but only to find out that it was captured a long time ago. Having Aki go to these great lengths of bonding with Denji to get him to be brothers. Makima knew Aki’s history and personality and used his powers to trick him into making all of the desicions he did. Aki yes became what he swore to destroy, but at an earlier time in his life. Aki didn’t care about the Gun devil anymore, he said he wasn’t going on the mission anymore, he wants to exclude Denji, Power and Angel from being dragged into it. As his revenge plot is diminished by his loving bonds with Angel and Power, Denji

The gun devil did attack in 1997, but that was when it attacked at the end of the series. This then leads to the fight between Denji and the gun devil after it merged with a certain person
