Millions of Filipinos suffer from hunger and are malnourished. According to the World Hunger Report, there are still some 14 million undernourished Filipinos and 13 million food-insecure Filipinos. Taken together, these account for nearly a third of the country’s population.
Many of these people cannot afford a single meal, so they resort to buying pagpag--leftover food collected from garbage and dumps, which are recycled for selling. We visited Tondo, one of the slums located in Manila, where we met up with Mama Rosita, a cook and vendor of pagpag.
Special thanks to our Asian Boss team in Manila, Philippines.

I was visiting Vietnam years ago. I was eating in a restaurant and I saw a young guy and a small child sitting there staring at me. I didn’t know why After I was done they came and asked if they could finish my soup and soda. I said “of course not.” I told them to sit down and ordered them each a big bowl of noodles soup and each a soda. They were so happy. Best couple bucks I’ve ever spent. Just be thankful for what you have.

@@durian111Well you're half way right here. First off America cannot solve everyone else's problems and America should not solely be looked at as the only financial contributor to this issue countries, such as China, South Korea, North Korea, and Japan should be contributing to this as well given that these are also Asian countries it makes sense that they too should be looked at to help out their brethren. NATO they could certainly help in this matter but looking solely at America to fund this is stupid. As far as food goes I would use part of that funding to kick start farming in those areas. There's a saying that goes if you give a man a fish you have fed him for a day but if you teach a man to fish you've fed him for a lifetime that heavily applies here. Raise livestock, grow crops, go hunting, go fishing. Resources for that would feed generations to come.

I remember when I was around 8 years old, me and my family didn't have enough money to buy from carinderias (food stalls) and even though they knew us, we're so deep in debt that they started saying no to us. So, papa left to look for food one night with what money he had left and came back carrying a bag of fried pagpags. I didn't know what it was other than the fact that it was chicken and asked mama what it was and she just said it was called 'pagpag'. I ate it and actually really liked it. I always wondered why we never ate it again after so many years. Fast forward to my 20s, I finally knew where it came from and it doesn't really bother me in the slightest. I'm grateful that my parents still looked for ways to feed us in spite not really telling us where it came from. It's just sad though that so many people have to resort to this in order to keep themselves from starving.

She says that the dry stuff inside containers is ideal because they likely haven’t made contact with anything actually dirty. The stuff that is touching the nasty water at the bottom of trash bags are too far gone because who knows how many chemicals and bacteria is in that. Mold also grows quicker on warm, wet stuff. As for cooking, frying the stuff in hot oil will kill anything that managed to stick on when they washed them.

Sadly, with the corruption being prevalent in our country, I doubt they'd get the help they need. These people are most likely to go back to cooking "Pagpag" food again just to survive, sort of like a thing they are used to doing and it cost what? Not even 10 cents to buy this food compared to spending dollars on normal ones, yet alone newly cooked food from the fastfood. This is the equivalent to Haiti's dirt cookies. Crazy how humans digestive system adapt to these kind of food when they don't have any choice but to risk eating it.

Poverty exist in all countries. As a military brat, my family moved from one city to another and from one country to another. I lived in California, New York, Texas, Hawaii, Chicago and saw homeless people begging for food and looking for food in the dumpsters all the time. I remember when this kid who was standing for I don't know how long beside the restaurant asked me if he could eat the fries on the floor under our table. I didn't realize that I had dropped some of my fries. We were outside of this restaurant so you can just imagine the dirt that was already covering the fries. He was about the same age as me, I was 5 years old. My mom felt so bad for him that she bought him his own fries. He was so happy. I don't know what happened to him after that. But there are a lot of kids out there who are just like him. When we travelled in Asia and Latin America, I saw the same thing happening. Starving kids everywhere.

In December 2019 I went to the Philippines for the first time in my 21 years of life to visit my family in Bulacan. I downloaded and watched this video on the plane, preparing myself for what was to come. I took a day to visit one of these slums in Manila and bought ice cream for the kids. One thing that has stuck with me to this day was the smell. the smell of sewage lingering in the humid air, people opening bags of smelly, rotten food, and dead dogs full of mange lying on the street. I could not mentally comprehend how anyone could live like this. To think that for most of these people, this is all they will ever know, with no realistic hope of ever escaping it. I was on the verge of crying when a group of kids in their underwear started running around, laughing uncontrollably as they played tag. It was then that i realized the full extent of how little it takes to be happy. I, someone who had been born into a middle class family, was struggling with depression while these kids had nothing and were truly happy. I could not enjoy the rest of my vacation after that. How could I enjoy the finer aspects of this country (vacationing in El Nido, sleeping in A/C hotels, etc) that i barely have a connection to while there are kids born and raised here that will forever live in poverty? To this day, I still don't have an answer to that question. All I know is that those of us in the first world need to start counting our blessings. Stop complaining and making issues for yourself so you have something to cry about. Count your blessings, material pursuits don't bring any lasting happiness, and start being there for people in need.

Hey man, thanks for your honesty. I think all of us balikbayans experience a similar dissonance.
Half of my family still live very "simply," while the other half did grow up streetwise and are doing better now, but know what super first-world pleasures look like (thanks to a caring, admittedly overgenerous and indebted parent). Luckily no one would ever stoop to the level of money vulture since they're good people. Both sides of the family are happy with how they live, and I came to learn and adapt to that quickly.
It was frustrating to see how strangers were living, though, knowing most don't get the kind of support my family does. The weirder shock is seeing how close the disparities can be in the same neighborhood. One block could be simple livable apartments, then around the corner are blocks of rundown shacks. Then less than a mile away from the shacks, the tall shiny office buildings, hotels and malls. Do the fancy rich people not realize what surrounds them?

I really respect Pinay people. They are tough people. I traveled there several times many years ago and the poverty was shocking. As a first world person, I seriously doubt I could do what these people have to do just to survive.

Sana. 💖

I’m an American living in Cebu, the Philippines. Watch this is still so hard. I live in a poorer neighborhood and feed all the kids at least once a month all at the same time- a big meal. I know it’s not enough, but I don’t have enough resources to feed everyone. It hurts to see the poverty. I’ll never get used to it. I have never been to Manila, but after watching this video I can only imagine it’s worse. At least in my Barangay, any kid knows if they are really hungry they can come to my house and they’ll get some oatmeal or rice and pork or pancit or whatever we have at the moment- anytime. I can’t turn kids away and they are kind and never over abuse being able to come for food. Good kids.
Update: I left Cebu and I’ve moved to Laguna in Southern Luzon.

Just recently he gave $1M to a fan after winning a challenge.
