@Swag Dispenser context matters. In her video, she mentions she went with her particular vehicle style so she didn't have to leave the vehicle to start driving it. In a truck camper situation, you're separate from your cabin when you're living in the vehicle, so you'd have to leave the bed, go outside around your truck, and then get in the driver's seat.

First time viewer of your channel. Wonderful build! I'm glad you're safety-minded, especially as to a solo woman (I'm an older woman, so you bet I know!). It's not paranoia, it's societal fact. Don't hesitate to use your safety equipment and plans. Pay close attention to your gut feelings - they're almost always right. Don't ever dismiss them. Women are taught to be "polite" - I'm telling you don't stifle your instinct to accommodate anyone else. "Intuitions are not to be ignored. They represent data processed too fast for the conscious mind to comprehend." I'm happy to hear that your mom and dad and you all built your Element together. I wish you all safe, long, healthy, happy lives!

I would say, make do with what you have. I had a Toyota Yaris, I just folded the back seats, and in order to make the trunk level surfaced, I added some small wood supports in the trunk and a plywood piece on top. After that I put a my camping gear on, (sleeping pad and inflatable mattress). People over-complicate things. The car doesn't have to be modeled after the "ideals of a big house home". What you need is a shelter for sleeping and a way to store the essentials. You don't really need to fit a convertible sofa into a small car, will you really sit on that thing compared to the comfortable passenger seat in the front? I know I didn't when I traveled through Sweden. I worked on my laptop comfortably in the front seat with an Ikea "öjulf" laptop support.
What helped me was the experience of fitting my whole life into a 33l backpack when traveling around Asia. I forced myself to fit everything I needed into that bag; Clothes, toiletries, 3x jackets (fleece, wind, dawn), a cap, gloves, laptop, battery bank, phone, documents. It helps being minimalist and having practical layered outdoor clothing as well as camping gear. Although I didn't bring it on the trip I also have a Trangia 27-3 camping kitchen, which takes very little space and is honestly the only thing anyone would need to cook a good meal. I would never use any kind of burner kitchen inside a car anyway, so no need for a 'real' kitchen unless you have a bigger camper. it's just so much safer and nicer to do outside. With a car, you could even bring a pop up tent, foldable chair + table. That way you don't have to live inside such a small vehicle.
I would start making small adventures with what you have. and get an idea of what you ACTUALLY need. :) More often than not the ideals of homes/campers cloud our perception of enjoying the freedom of the outdoors.

Hey, Man - just put a piece of plywood on the floor for flatness, and a camp pad on that. $50total for your 1st build that will work! Upgrade to camp cot, and you'll get a bit of storage underneath. No need to "build" anything to try out the lifestyle. Those DBs in their $100k Sprinter conversions are a joke!

Cool job converting your Element and protecting your privacy -- major props to you and your mom and dad. Elements are such highly functional and cool vehicles and I really wanted to buy one, but I needed a vehicle that got higher MPG. I ended up waiting and buying a Subaru Forester -- both the Element and Forester (and other Subaru SUVs) have their cult followings and for good reasons! BTW, those metal loops in the rear of your Element are for securing / tying down things with adjustable straps or rope so that they don't move around when driving, e.g., furniture, a bicycle, etc. lt looks like you're already using them for their intended purpose!

This is an awesome build! I just recently put in a platform in my mini van to camp in and used it in my first solo camping trip a couple weeks ago! Your design is awesome and simple enough that it wouldnt be so out of my league to one day take some inspiration from :) my step dad also had to do most of the building and cutting as he does carpentry and building lol so I related to you there. At first I felt like I had to do it all on my own but realized that I had so little wood working experience, no tools, and no idea what I actually needed as a design and starting out simpler was probably better. All of this my step dad rightfully mentioned haha and said, "look, I have everything we need to get you on the road in the barn and it will take 3 hours... do you wanna build a fancy van or do you wanna go travel?" Thanks for showing me that starting somewhere is better then starting nowhere, and that one day maybe I can work up to something as cool and functional as you!

I am converting my 2011 subaru outback into my camping home! And i saw a comment where you replied to a person who was pretty discouraged on a full build, and i will say, i bought a $150 soft and cooling ‘mattress’ from amazon, a few smart storage options, a generator, window covers, hiking and camping supplies such as fans, sleeping bags, and one duffel bag for me and my boyfriend. Plus some extra hiking bags duh! plus floor board space for our water stash and on the road filling snacks. So far i have not spent over $500 for the entire ‘build’/conversion, starting from a minimum wage job with no essentials for car camping, which is pretty good but you can go even cheaper! i am so happy with it just to get out there. I dont think a heater is necessary, but for me fans and cooling systems are so so so clutch, especially since the desert is where i ❤️ to be. Alsoooo! Mine is also a hatch back; and i feel so super safe to have my boyfriend, but man or woman, two people or one, it is a MUST to have safety game plans and worse case scenario practice. I can jump to my drivers seat in a instant from practice. Im so happy for you! Some people are weird about saying i love you. But from this video i grew a human love for you and your journey!

A passive air vent can help in the summer.
I had a friend take the heat down a lot by storing things in an insulated box in the summer Basically, you heat up everything in the car during the day and that radiates back out at night, making the car hotter than it has to be. Getting extra bedding, clothes, etc., from doing that will make it less hot, if not actually cool.

As far as as I know, no other car has that ability.

I love seeing a simple conversion like this. It’s the most practical tyoe. People have been living in cars since there were cars. It’s not new. In 2006-8 or so we were called “van dwellers”. I lived in my Chevy Blazer in 2006-8 with plastic drawers stacked and long closet shelf planks on top to make a bed platform. I had a Yakima rack on top for extra storage, camp gear and a cooler for a “kitchen”, and a 5gallon jug with a hand pumo on top for drinking water. Reflextix with black fabric for blackout shades, black velvet fabric with string across for curtains, a foam pad doubled up and a sleeping bag. It was GREAT! Anywhere I went, I was home. When I wanted to go somewhere, I climbed up front and drove off. Not having all the fancy stuff like some folks do makes it far more “stealthy” and safer. Good on you for keeping it simple and meeting your needs. It doesn’t need to be fancy, and fancy makes you more of a target anyway. Zip ties are awesome!!! They work for so many things. No need for all the time consuming or costly attachments - zip ties work ;-)

Cool mods. Luv the way you can easily convert it back to a normal car!
Here is a recommendation I'd like to make to your camping gear.
A cool little multipurpose tool I would recommend is a huge knife from Nepal called a Kukri. It can function as an axe, machete, bowie style knife that you can baton split wood. It is a great wood processing tool without having to bring other tools that would cramp up your vehicle. Not to mension if you have to, you could add it to your self defense arsenal if you have to. Because knife laws vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, Iock it up in a hard case when I keep it in the car for camping and only take it out when camping so if I get any questioning from any authorities I can demonstrate that it is used as a "machete for recreational and tool use" which many jurisdictions have allow you to do. I'm not a lawyer, but if you keep it locked up with a nice folding saw and don't carry it out while you're doing things like hiking you should be okay. One of these paired with a folding saw should be compact enough and serve any wood processing needs when camping. Carry a nice rugged legal folder when you're hiking as your EDC.
I use a kukri hand made from Nepal with a traditional handle that you need to get used to and know how to use to get the most use of. However, they make a version with a more familiar handle and is straight forward. For that I highly recommend the "Ka-Bar Kukri" which you can pick up for well under $100.

@@lifeinmyelement yeah, after a few muggy and rainy nights in the car, I really needed ventilation, but couldn't crack a window because of the rain. Thus...deflectors. You can get the cheaper ones that are cut for your car. Self install is pretty easy/small pain...

I have a black Honda Element as well but mines a 2006 that I live in full time here in San Diego. We are blessed to live in such a reliable car that is very stealthy. I removed my left side seat and bought a cot that fits in somehow too perfect and just fold down my driver seat and move it forward when it’s sleep mode. My element came with a roof rack and fits a 200w solar panel in between them perfectly and put two 1000cca batteries where the spare tires goes and fits there perfectly hidden away. This is my home now I added a 24inch tv with bungee cables in back of it that hangs the tv anywhere to play good movies and play my Nintendo and PlayStation on, so comfy the head room :). You’re very inspirational and wish we can catch some views here in San Diego and hang out
