Chase Bliss should be very pleased with this video. You have done an absolutely incredible job, thank you for going through this for us. So much it's hard not to make a video of this length.
Man, this drop was a complete surprise. With the Gen Loss MKii, they announced it in advance and later took preorders, but this announcement just hit my inbox today like "haha look what we did, btw you can get one right now" (Not that I'm complaining, the wait for the gen loss was almost painful). And here Mark is with a whole assed infosession on the same day. MARK HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN KEEPING THIS SECRET
@@markjohnstonofficialYou made a feature length film about a pedal in a couple of weeks? Did you sleep? Or do you have someone who edits while you slumber?
Nah I’m just obsessive. And it helps that I already knew the lossy plugin pretty well. Honestly once I know the workings I’m doing a video on and how the video is going to be structured the actual shoot / edit process is only about 2-3 days. “Only”
32:45 absolutely sold me. End of chain texturizer sounds on this thing are unbelievably sweet. I haven’t even got to the evolving slush/freeze dynamics in your vid lol this is a no brainer for me
Great demo, Mark! Has me considering actually buying this pedal. Would be fun to run Gen Loss in stereo through this and hear what the digital copy of an old cassette tape would sound like. Haha.
Maan at 39:00 when turning up the global knob, and the microcosm feeding a beautiful delay, it kind of reminds me of my favourite sound on my dark world with the mod-mode on. But this is stereo and it sound so good!
Your way of framing the purpose of the device and preparing the viewer for the experience is fabulous! Things always come full circle. Having "vintage digital degradation" as an effect will probably increase in popularity and people might even place higher value on old multifx and such when they become more scarce. One day it will feel nostalgic to have our instruments sounds as if they're on a skype call with a poor connection haha. Your video is such cool timing for me as I have begun to integrate this digital lo-fi concept into my own sound. I got my hands on an old Zoom 505ii for 10$ and the first part of your track reminded me of it as it also has these slow attack and pitch shifting abilities. Several of the effects sound rather artificial and lo-fi but that's what makes it great, especially through a massive modulated reverb. It's a new world of discovery we have here.
This plug in is instant Phoebe Bridgers. I am going to have to show some SERIOUS restraint with this one or just get it if it’s on some Black Friday deal.
Continuing your long trend of doing better demos of pedals than the actual pedal designers. (And CB or EQD or OBNE or any of the rest are pretty dang good at demos!) Thanks!
Watching this a second time, one of the things you do here that other folks haven't done is to show how effective the Lossy is at the end of the chain. That "loss mode switch to left" after the Microcosm: amazing.
Hello Mark, May i ask you if you can do a video on the most special effect pedals , A complete guide, witch one are better in there categorie…. Dream pedal board without using 2 times almost same effect…like CHASE BLISS ( Mood mk2, Lossy…. ) / WALRUS ( Fable )/ Hologram ( Microcosm…. ). / STRYMON ( Bigsky, Nightsky… ) / Eventide ( H90 ) / Poly Verbs…. Just to name those there’s a lot more out there, that’s exactly the purpose of my demand / All other like granular effect…. You’re the best do to it please🙏 Let say somebody strat from scratch on whant to make a dream pedal board to experiment sound Also most of us dream of infinite collection of pedals but can’t afford more than ( let say ) more than 8 or 10 pedals, including volume pedal, expression pedal, gain pedal ( basic one’s… ) Not the most affordable pedal board, but the BEST compact pedal board Thank you so much in advance.
Okay I’m just gonna say it..this sounds like a shit 90s chorus pedal your depressed uncle left you in his will along with a set of sad He-Man figurines. It also captures the tones of every really cheap electric guitar we have all ever owned just as we realised the electronics were made by drunk elderly folks randomly dropping cigarette ash into the soldering as they sweat through their unmotivated work day. There are also the nostalgic tones of an 80’s TV set from cold war Russia as the KGB activated their surveillance tech while you tried to watch illegal satellite shows from Bucharest. At certain points during this demo..I’m pretty sure I also felt a touch of the brown sound in there (if you know you know) - overall..it makes me want to grow a beret and start a RUclips channel soley focused on the benefits of writing with quill and inkwell. Is that a good thing? Is that the target market? Is this where guitar gear is going now? I think this pedal will be a success but not because the pedal is amazing (it might be) but because of how it will create a universe of musicians who use it and those who don’t. There will be a musical tribal warfare like never before..one side hissing and warbling into battle the other wiring and frantically screwing rack gear into flight cases to roll down hills to the backdrop of Van Halen solos, pristine, high fidelity solos. Everyone will eventually collide in a surreal melee and right before the cacophony descends into hellish grey noise, Josh Scott will collaborate with Chase Bless (yes I spelled it that way) to create the ‘Clean-up’ pedal, one side noise nostalgia, the other side klon clone and everyone will rejoice. So..overall..I like it.
Lol. When I write smthg like that in the comments people tell me to get a life. Here you go. 😂 and your right: while the gen loss and shallow water vids gave me gas, this one is like „aha. Who would want that?“ i have valhalla supermassive vst running on an intel stick inside A pedal.. maybe i try the original lossy plugin. But 400 for this… dunno.
“Lofi” is not a monolith anymore than “delay” is or “reverb” is. A tape delay that is designed to specifically excel at tape machine emulation (think the el cap or volante) is going to have a combination of both features and sound design elements that’ll be starkly different from an analog bucket brigade style delay or an 80’s rack digital dual delay. In that same way, something emulating the way old tape, either VHS in the case of the original Gen loss or the various tape and cassette machine models of the mkii, has both w sonic thumbprint and control scheme that’s totally different from something emulating the way audio is compressed and degraded via the digital compression of burning and ripping cd’s as well as the way early RUclips / cell phones compressed audio. Also Gen loss classic has hi/low filters and two modulation control. This has band pass, reverb, and a speed / depth / jitter / drop out control scheme.
Totally. The gear I’m reviewing tends to prefer a direction and I just lean into it. Like I’m not gonna write aggressive, touche amore style post hardcore if I’m reviewing a big lush reverb or a chorus and I’m not likely to write big, swimming ambience if the pedal is a jcm in a box.
My initial reaction is that this is the absolute worst idea for a pedal of all time!!! Lol! Being from chase bliss though, I'm sure I will end up loving it eventually though.
I am a big Chase Bliss fan, but this, no thanks. From HIFI to LOFI like generation loss is wonderful and great, but a devolution to NOFI. Just like Fairfield Circuitry’s Roger That! , definitely not my cup of tea. But I guess there is a niche market for everyone.
About half way thru the video he runs it post some long wet effects and you go “OKAY WOW!” I agree that it’s not an everyday effect for everyone. It may even be better suited for keyboard players / multi instrument home studio guys, but I can see a niche market for it. In that way, it’s perfectly on brand for chase bliss.
That's a big "why ?" for me. Digital artefacts are already widely available and that's the type of effect that gets old really fast (no pun intended). I really miss the "analog heart digital brain" days where they pushed the boundaries of everyday effects...
Not easy to do well though or to package in a thoughtful way. Lossy is a well loved plugin for a reason and chase bliss is smart to bring it to a physical format. I do agree that it’s such a bummer that most of the analog stuff is dead though. Parts shortages and a small team serving a niche but demanding audience is a tough place to be.
I love how CBA is partnering with other companies in this way. I'd LOVE to see them partner with Valhalla reverb next :)
I feel like chase bliss is one of the only pedal companies taking real swings at creating legitimately original pedals and I appreciate it 👏👏👏
Hologram I feel does a great job as well.
It’s literally a plugin that already exists

Professor Mark with another dissertation on a wonderful pedal! Professor Mark, love your content!
This will be the standard reference demo of the Lossy. Thank you so much for this awesome video 🙌👏👏👏👏👏

One of my favorite intros you’ve ever done. Well done…..
Such a good demo of this pedal, tysm.
Oh Lordy that lofi mangling at the 21 minute mark was a thing of pure beauty. This can’t be anything but an instant buy ❤❤❤❤
Yeah idk about this pedal 😂 sounds like the most deep fried mp3 you can get pedal.
Great demo, Mark! Has me considering actually buying this pedal. Would be fun to run Gen Loss in stereo through this and hear what the digital copy of an old cassette tape would sound like. Haha.
Strong Digimon the movie vibes all up in this pedal lol

do you use a regular power outlet for all the pedals? and do you use a power conditioner as well for less noise from the pedals?

It’s seems like either a parallel effect or that it requires other effects to complete it. Seems better suited for synths and drum machines
