I've said it once, I'll say it again... Tool is the kind of band where any fan can make a playlist of their favorite tool songs and it will be enjoyed by any tool fan. It is impossible to put together a list of unenjoyable tool songs. Everyone is a tool fan. Some just don't know it yet.

You gotta look up Maynards battle with himself. His mother was bound to a wheelchair for a long period of time. 10.000 days. But the beauty of it she never lost her faith. He couldn't understand that or fathom it. A Perfect Circle's 1st album reiterates this. The song Judith on that album is the greatest song I've ever heard.

Every time I watch someone react to Jambi, it brings tears to my eyes. Maynard's musical poetry is "moisturized" with powerful metaphors. The loss of a family member or a friend often makes people wish they could give up all their earthly possessions just to have them back in their life. But I love the reference to worship of the sun. I can see the sun, and I know the sun exists, and it doesn't judge, unlike all other gods that I've been told to believe in. Live for the day in peace, love and unity with your family and friends. Tomorrow is not promised to any of us.

Maynard's mother was very sick for a very long time. The band has given him great success, but he would wish it all away if it meant that she could not be sick and continue to live. Many Tool songs are about Maynard's mother and her sickness. Check out Wings for Marie (both parts, obv).

    • @aaronmueller1560

As a further explanation of this, a talkbox essentially has the guitar sound traveling through a tube into the guitarist’s mouth/throat. A mic then picks up whatever sound is coming out of the mouth, so the guitarist can form shapes with their mouth to affect the sound and make it sound like the guitar is talking.

It almost sounds like a voice because it is almost a voice. It's called a talkbox. Peter Frampton is famous for using it. Also bon Jovi's guitarist richie Sambora in slippery when wet used it.

    • @joechurch7
      @joechurch7 9 месяцев назад

The earliest incarnation of the talk box was invented by Jazz steel guitarist Alvino Rey in the late 1930's and later adopted by Pete Drake in the 50's. They weren't commercially available until audio wizard Bob Heil made one for Joe Walsh to use on the song rocky Mountain Way. Bob showed it to Peter Frampton and Peter had to have one. The Frampton Comes Alive album brought the device to the mainstream.

The solo uses a talkbox, which is a guitar amp that send the sound through a tube that you stick in your mouth. Then you can move your mouth like your talking, and it changes the sound accordingly. Then you use a vocal mic to capture that sound.
Ecfectively, the guitar replaces your vocal chords. So that's why it sounds like the guitar is talking. Adam isn't really saying anything, though. He's just mouthing through different vowels.

It's about not losing his connection to the transcendent ("my peace of mind, my all, my center"), and therefore his humanity, due to success and its resulting arrogance and overindulgence.
    ".....But I
    And I would
    If I could
    And I would
    Wish it away
    Wish it away
    Wish it all away
    Wanna wish it all away
No prize that could hold sway
Or justify my giving away my center
So if I could I'd wish it all away
If I thought tomorrow would take you away
You, my peace of mind, my all, my center
Just trying to hold on one more day
    Damn my eyes!
    Damn my eyes!
Damn my eyes if they should compromise the fulcrum
Wants and needs divide me then I might as well be gone..."

I mean if Tool songs are open to interpretation then I think it's both. It's definitely about a genie, but there's a line between Pee-Wee's Jambi and the lines about wishing it all away, to hold on to one more day. Genies in stories sometimes have a "devil's deal" or "monkey's paw" aspect to them. Genies are jokers and tricksters!
To me it sounds like he's talking about a wealth of stuff, when he would give this wish away for more time, so he fell into the genie's trap
also I think "compromise the fulcrum" is a Lateralus spiral reference, like he's stepped up his understanding and can see the genie's trick (or joke) for what it is, a gift but also ultimately a bad bargain!

Rub the top of Jambi's box, and change the color of your socks. Wish for rain and wish for snow, wish that Jambi makes it so. Long live Jambi.

Correct. This song was kind of a "joke" yet I certainly didn't take it that way until I heard one the band members (Danny I think) talk about the genie etc.

13:40...as i understand it, it is an effecy Adam uses that kinda makes a voice sound like a "transformer"...not 100% sure of what it is officially called, but it is a "vocal" effect Adam uses along side his guitar.

I don't know if you've been told, or if you realize it yet, but Tool is a drug! Almost every new song you hear will leave you with wanting more. The "algorithm" sent me to your channel so forgive me for not knowing this but were you aware that the drummer, guitarist and bassist write and record the music and then Maynard puts words to it when they are done.

I love how you break down the lyrics man! Tool songs are ment to make you think and process. Tool definitely has an art of making listeners do this but not everyone gets that it’s not just “music” it’s about making you use your brain.

A song they did make as a joke is called “Maynard’s di*k.” It’s the hidden track at the end of salival, I believe, and it’s different side of tool, but actually sounds pretty good! May be worth a video sometime if you’re willing and get the time to.

I believe that it's about an awakening of self and stepping out of the darkness to find value in life and others. Realizing that earthly pleasures are temporary and insignificant in the face of love and honor and that you'd gladly "wish them all away" if keeping them meant losing what was truly important and eternal. "If wants and needs divide me, then I might as well be gone".

I love how Tool lyrics can be interpreted multiple ways. Like a painting, you take from it based on your life experiences.
You could say it’s about a man who is wanting to avoid temptations of cheating on his wife with more attractive women (if my eyes should compromise I might as well be done). He is willing to give all of his success away if it means he could be with her.
