I'm a track coach at the youth level but no a relay coach. And just to hear Mechelle speak and breakdown relay sprinting is insane!!! I hope to get my daughter down to AP Ranch for a clinic or 2 as she gets older. I'm learning a lot just hearing her speak. Please more of this type of content with high level coaches!

I was a relay specialist for Jamaica 1984 Olympic Silver and 1988 Olympics Relay finalist 4th place 4x100m 2nd lef both times. These technologies with data used to analyze speed of baton passes and velocity, A
plus all the technicalities 0 to 3 sec in the zone and the measure of which athletes perform the task best running the different relay legs is amazing and I didn't have none of these considerations when I competed. No wonder the USA women team 4x100 is having success they getting now. Congratulations.

Bc she didn’t use her own reasoning. Gabby and Sha’Carri had terrible handoffs. Gabby and teetee had terrible handoffs. The common issue: gabby lacking relay iq. She said the opposite here. First of all, amazing interview with Coach Freeman. The detailed look into what makes relays work and the complexities involved was truly educational. Second, the dream 4x100m teams might need to consider bringing in Bob Hayes. With max velocity in excess of 12m/s on a cinder track...how could he not be in the mix. Coleman might be a great starter, but the first leg is still 100m and Justin Gatlin was consistently an amazing starter...with great top end speed. Gatlin 1st leg, Gay 2nd leg, Lyles 3rd leg, Hayes 4th leg.

I feel like Mechelle and USATF knew their star Allyson Felix would probably get passed (maybe by Femke Bol) the same way she got passed by Paulino if Felix were to run anchor leg. So they gave Simon the anchor position to preserve Felix's reputation in case Felix had ran 4th & given up USA’s lead...

If the best women's team ever (all in their prime) were based purely on speed I'd go with Flo-jo, Carmelita Jeter, Sha'Carri Richardson & Marion Jones. The slowest PB of this bunch is 10.65... With decent hand-offs I feel like sub-40.50 would be theoretically possible with this team. Idk the order though, I'm unsure who is good out of the blocks relative to the other 3.
Men you could have Tyson Gay, Justin Gatlin, Christian Coleman & Trayvon Bromell. I'd probably go with Christian Coleman first, Tyson Gay 2nd, Trayvon 3rd, & Gatlin to anchor. Coleman has the best start, but is probably going the slowest from 90-100m out of these 4. So I actually think you want the guy with the worst start out of these 4 (I'd say Tyson) to go 2nd so they don't run away from Coleman, luckily even with a not so great start Tyson Gay has still ran multiple 9.7s & the one 9.6x. If I remember correctly Trayvon has a pretty good start & Tyson will probably have the fastest 90-100m so a good starter won't get run up on too badly, then the most experienced Gatlin anchors. I think a 36.7ish would be do-able by this team with practiced handoffs.

I’m sorry she’s never going to convince me that gabby was a good choice. Never. The budapest win and Paris wins were because of Sha’Carri. Especially Paris. If she was not on the team. That team loses worlds and Olympics. To not acknowledge that here is crazy. To pretend that gabby has relay iq is laughable. And YES. I could put together a team that incudes spears and handoff. The teams I’d have chose. Tamari to teetee to Melissa to Sha’Carri. Tamari is the best lead off the USA has had in a while. TeeTee Melissa and Sha’Carri are teammates. That connection already exists. That would have been an Olympic record. Gabby was picked bc of politics that’s it. She’s a “better” star for the white gaze than Sha’Carri. Just wait until Sha’Carri understands the 200m better. Nobody except Julien Alfred has a top end speed close to Sha’Carri. Elaine Thompson is the next closest then Shericka Jackson. Healthy shericka = another silver medal for gabby. A better start = 100m gold even if Shericka and Shelly were in the final. Those are facts. In no world using real objective, best handoff, and speed is gabby the choice unless it was political.
