Nice bike! I just restored a 1991 Goldwing GL1500SE. It has 250,000km. Once restored I took it on a 6,800km trip and it ran perfectly. They don't make motorcycles like they used to. Ride safe

Brother I’m about to buy a 1994 Voyager with 32000km from a very nice old gentleman who loves the bike but can’t ride it anymore. It was last plated in 2008. Your video gave me confidence that I’m not crazy for wanting this old bike. If only my wife could be so understanding. We shall see :)

As pretty as it is, the camera just doesn't do it justice. Still happy to have these memories on video and audio. The Voyager does have a growl. I wasn't reacclimated enough to riding yet to really let her rip. You could see that I was practicing hitting my lines through the curves. I couldn't take care of my bikes for many years. Going out to the garage wasn't worth the pain. But you've done an excellent job keeping your old girl looking and running great. She's a keeper. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend.
The Japanese bikes are engineered and built to last. They tend to be a bit more technologically advanced. Take care of them and they will take care of you.
Spot on. And just as important, Japanese bikes changed the benchmark for the whole world. Excellent engineering became paramount. It's one of the reasons HD, Triumph, Ducati etc .....began to fail. They fell behind in engineering and execution. I think they've mostly caught up.

Oh Hell yeah! Anywhere around Denver (except in the middle of the night) is pure misery. It is very hard to get thru a long trip with friends or family without a little drama. Main thing is not let it be permanent. You guys did good! I have seen friends part company on long rides! I will not leave anybody behind or separated. That is one thing that really pisses me off. The lead bike should never ride like he is just by himself. Very nice videos. I have ridden these same roads/areas several times. I never get tired of it.

You keep bringing back memories! That same trip, the wife and I went through Rocky Mountain National Park (absolutely beautiful, by the way), and were to meet up with an old high school buddy for a late lunch. Traffic was sooo bad, that it took us about 4 hours to get from Boulder to our motel in Centennial, and we ended up having a late dinner instead. Now, I live in Southern California, but that was as bad as any L.A. traffic I’ve ever been in. And boy, it was hot! Started the trek back home the next day back through the Rockies; much cooler at higher altitudes! Great roads in Colorado for sure!

Yes, Ive definitely thought about it. I have a GoPro 8 and a Sena Prism Tube from a few years back. I don't have the video editing skills, but I'm sure I can figure that stuff out. What I'm lacking is time! You moto-vloggers put a lot of time into your videos; unfortunately I still work about 12 hours a day, and with my wife's health issues, I'm doing most of the work around the house as well. But I'm finally able to get away for a week, starting 9/4 - heading to the top of central Oregon, then following the coast the entire way back to So Cal. I will be filming stretches of the trip, maybe for a future channel? Time will tell...

Sounds like the communicators are a good idea! I have always enjoyed conversing with my riding partner on a trip, it makes things more shareable and an extra set of eyes regarding safety as well. That being said I have found that I can't understand or be understood at highway speeds because of wind noise, how do your Sena's do?
I agree 100% Robert. Being able to communicate is a game changer as far as I'm concerned. This trip was my first experience with a Bluetooth unit and although mine failed, once we got a replacement it was awesome. You'll see how good the Sena system is in future videos. They're very clear, for the most part, and plenty loud at 80+. Speaker placement is critical but if you find them comfortable, you can use your own earbuds. I'm back on the Sena in the next video and both of us for the first time in the video after that. Stay tuned. Thanks for watching Robert. YUP the speedo cable broke on my 2000 - bummer because the cruise and auto volume control for the stereo are tied into that system - so neither of those will work without speed. And yes, they are prone for that breaking because of the 'extreme' bends in the cable. I believe there is one other design flaw with these because on mine the lower radiator hose was actually touching one of the exhaust pipes, causing it to develop a minute hole and spring a leak. The clearances down there are super tight. The hose was/is discontinued so I took it down to an 'old skool' auto parts store here in Pueblo. They pulled out a massive hose catalog (with pics) and matched the bad hose to an automotive hose. I did need to do some trimming on the ends, but it was a perfect fit. When I installed it, I wrapped the hose in some of that 'gutter guard' stuff that keeps debris out of the gutter, to create a 'heat barrier' to prevent the problem from happening again. Otherwise, I was SUPER LUCKY to find mine from the original owner in Colorado Springs in September of 2011. It had only 8700 miles on the clock. I ran I think 2 containers of fuel system cleaner through it right away and have never looked back. And you are right about that engine smoothness. You hit the perfect RPM range and it is an absolute hummer. SO addictive. I have a plaque that says "you will never see a biker at a psychiatrist office"......
Hello Gerald. Thanks for a great comment. You're right about the extreme bends in the speedo cable. In fact, when I replaced mine, I installed it the way you'd think it goes but it was upside down and I redid it the "right way". It's funny you mentioned the radiator hose. I had that minute leak. It was just before I was leaving NH for AZ. I couldn't see where it was coming from and it led to the purchase of a Goldwing. (I still have the Voyager). I'm on a trip right now, I just went through Colorado, but I'm going to check it out when I get home. Thanks for the tip. I didn't know about that problem. I'm looking forward to taking the Voyager for a ride. I'll be riding it to NC and ultimately to Florida in the fall. It's such a great touring platform. Better than my goldwing in many ways. I'll take a look and if I have it, I will reply back. So many of the 'old skool' parts stores have disappeared over the years. The major chains can't do anything without 'year, make and model'. Riding to NC? Are you headed for The Dragon? Me and the wife just did that last month - but in her car. All I can say is WOW. Maybe we'll return on the Voyager some day......
Thanks Gerald. If you have the hose number, I'd really appreciate that info. I don't know if I'll take the Voyager to the dragon. I've been on that road several times and while I love the road, I'm not a fan of some of the people who ride it. Too many dangerous riders who aren't skilled enough to ride it fast but try to anyway. I've had some close calls there. Some riders tend to cross over onto the wrong side of the road to compensate for their lack of skill. More than likely, I'll stick to the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's very pretty in the fall.
@@HaveMotoWillTravel OK I found my invoice from 2019. It indicates a Gates hose #22644. Same curves, you will just need to trim the ends. While I was in there, I also removed the thermostat. 3 years and 7K miles later, I have never had a problem with the engine not getting hot enough. You will just need to replace the o-ring if you do that. If you ride a lot in the summer, I think it would be a good idea (thermostats can fail after all). For winter riding, I literally cover at least the top half of the radiator with a piece of thick plastic to keep the temp up, and still no problems.
Nope. We're still using the Sena 20s evos. We're cheap and will use these until they die or we do. 😂🤣 But..... I've heard nothing but good stuff about the Cardo brand. Thanks for watching. I almost bought a Cavalcade. I think they were great bikes, way ahead of their time. I've never ridden one, and ultimately, parts availability kept me from buying one. I just rode the Voyager yesterday. Really a great bike.

In my defense, this is Episode 12 of this series and there are pictures in some of the other episodes so I never thought to include any. The other thing is, I never shot any of this for RUclips. I didn't have a channel until a year later. I really did these to have my own video journal. I started with a Flandria Floret 49cc back in 1975, then got a Flandria Double exhaust 50cc, then a Yamaha SS 49cc (fdhx) and after that a Yamaha 50RD 50cc. From there I went straight to a Honda 750 Four K7 and then a Honda 750 F2. Got a Suzuki 750GT and again to Honda 750F1. Drove it for about ten years and got me a Yamaha V-Max with a 140HP kit and after two years got me a Benelli 750 with compressor. Then had a Moto-Guzzi California and then a Harley Fat Boy Hard Tail which I regretted immediately and got me a Kawasaki 1300. This was mid-nineties. Got me a GoldWing 1200 Interstate cuz I didn't like the feel of the Kawa, and never looked back. Had several GoldWings since 1996 and now own a 2022 GoldWing DCT and never wanna go back to anything else. Am 62 and still go crossing with a MaicoTwo-Stroke from 1975. Cross machine. I beat Nationals with it at Tielt-Winge near Schaffen in Belgium, where a lot of pros go to rain. I beat the lot because, A) I'm good, and B) the Maico is a two-stroke and has far better accelleration. Lower top speed than the four-strokes, but the accellertion beats 'em everytime...
What a great comment Jimmy! You've had quite a motorcycling "career". I'm 69 so I remember all the bikes you mention. Some of them weren't available here in the states but, as a young man, I lusted for some of the same machines. The Kawasaki 1300 was a beast of a bike. Large and unwieldy but oh that 6 cylinder engine. You can still find them for sale here in the states, some in very good shape. Parts are a hassle. I never rode a Suzuki 750GT. It was out of production by the time I bought my first big bike. I bought the 1st year Suzuki GS850G and absolutely loved it. I wish I still owned that bike. I still have the Voyager xii, and still enjoy it, but for the last 4 yrs most of my long distance riding has been on my 2007 Goldwing. I can confirm my suspicion that the Voyager has more luggage capacity. Great bikes all. I love motorcycles and I sense that you feel the same I'm thrilled to have a viewer in Belgium. It had 19000 miles on it when I bought it. It has about 32,000 miles on it now. 10,000 of those were put on on this Cripple 2 Cross Contry trip. I still have the bike and I still love it. Thanks for watching.
Tom, I've never ridden a GL1200 so I only know what I've read. The comparisons were very favorable to the voyager 12. The Goldwings of the era won out in refinement but the voyager 12 was a better value. I own a 2007 Goldwing which cost 3 times the money. Both bikes were 12 years old when I bought them. Sounds like the communicators are a good idea! I have always enjoyed conversing with my riding partner on a trip, it makes things more shareable and an extra set of eyes regarding safety as well. That being said I have found that I can't understand or be understood at highway speeds because of wind noise, how do your Sena's do?
I agree 100% Robert. Being able to communicate is a game changer as far as I'm concerned. This trip was my first experience with a Bluetooth unit and although mine failed, once we got a replacement it was awesome. You'll see how good the Sena system is in future videos. They're very clear, for the most part, and plenty loud at 80+.
Speaker placement is critical but if you find them comfortable, you can use your own earbuds.
I'm back on the Sena in the next video and both of us for the first time in the video after that. Stay tuned.

YUP the speedo cable broke on my 2000 - bummer because the cruise and auto volume control for the stereo are tied into that system - so neither of those will work without speed. And yes, they are prone for that breaking because of the 'extreme' bends in the cable. I believe there is one other design flaw with these because on mine the lower radiator hose was actually touching one of the exhaust pipes, causing it to develop a minute hole and spring a leak. The clearances down there are super tight. The hose was/is discontinued so I took it down to an 'old skool' auto parts store here in Pueblo. They pulled out a massive hose catalog (with pics) and matched the bad hose to an automotive hose. I did need to do some trimming on the ends, but it was a perfect fit. When I installed it, I wrapped the hose in some of that 'gutter guard' stuff that keeps debris out of the gutter, to create a 'heat barrier' to prevent the problem from happening again.
Otherwise, I was SUPER LUCKY to find mine from the original owner in Colorado Springs in September of 2011. It had only 8700 miles on the clock. I ran I think 2 containers of fuel system cleaner through it right away and have never looked back. And you are right about that engine smoothness. You hit the perfect RPM range and it is an absolute hummer. SO addictive. I have a plaque that says "you will never see a biker at a psychiatrist office"......
Hello Gerald. Thanks for a great comment. You're right about the extreme bends in the speedo cable. In fact, when I replaced mine, I installed it the way you'd think it goes but it was upside down and I redid it the "right way".
It's funny you mentioned the radiator hose. I had that minute leak. It was just before I was leaving NH for AZ. I couldn't see where it was coming from and it led to the purchase of a Goldwing. (I still have the Voyager).
I'm on a trip right now, I just went through Colorado, but I'm going to check it out when I get home. Thanks for the tip. I didn't know about that problem. I'm looking forward to taking the Voyager for a ride. I'll be riding it to NC and ultimately to Florida in the fall. It's such a great touring platform. Better than my goldwing in many ways.

@@HaveMotoWillTravel I think you will need to remove that bottom air scoop thingy to get a better perspective. I may have saved the hose # that works. I'll take a look and if I have it, I will reply back. So many of the 'old skool' parts stores have disappeared over the years. The major chains can't do anything without 'year, make and model'.
Riding to NC? Are you headed for The Dragon? Me and the wife just did that last month - but in her car. All I can say is WOW. Maybe we'll return on the Voyager some day......

I don't know if I'll take the Voyager to the dragon. I've been on that road several times and while I love the road, I'm not a fan of some of the people who ride it. Too many dangerous riders who aren't skilled enough to ride it fast but try to anyway. I've had some close calls there. Some riders tend to cross over onto the wrong side of the road to compensate for their lack of skill. More than likely, I'll stick to the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's very pretty in the fall.
@@HaveMotoWillTravel OK I found my invoice from 2019. It indicates a Gates hose #22644. Same curves, you will just need to trim the ends. While I was in there, I also removed the thermostat. 3 years and 7K miles later, I have never had a problem with the engine not getting hot enough. You will just need to replace the o-ring if you do that. If you ride a lot in the summer, I think it would be a good idea (thermostats can fail after all). For winter riding, I literally cover at least the top half of the radiator with a piece of thick plastic to keep the temp up, and still no problems.
I hope you and Carl have upgraded to a Cardo with mesh networking. Ranges over a mile..lol.
Nope. We're still using the Sena 20s evos. We're cheap and will use these until they die or we do. 😂🤣 But..... I've heard nothing but good stuff about the Cardo brand.

I almost bought a Cavalcade. I think they were great bikes, way ahead of their time. I've never ridden one, and ultimately, parts availability kept me from buying one. I just rode the Voyager yesterday. Really a great bike.

They're great bikes aren't they? Do you have a 2003 or a 1999? I think that's the two years for that color. I saw a green one for sale right after I bought mine. Really nice. But it had 43k miles mine only had 19k miles.

First, thanks for visiting the channel and watching this video. Second, great point. There's the picture in the title page but....... In my defense, this is Episode 12 of this series and there are pictures in some of the other episodes so I never thought to include any. The other thing is, I never shot any of this for RUclips. I didn't have a channel until a year later. I really did these to have my own video journal. And I know what the Voyager looks like. 😂😉 But you're right, it would have made for a better, more informative video. I appreciate the constructive comment. I'm still learning. Please visit again.
I started with a Flandria Floret 49cc back in 1975, then got a Flandria Double exhaust 50cc, then a Yamaha SS 49cc (fdhx) and after that a Yamaha 50RD 50cc. From there I went straight to a Honda 750 Four K7 and then a Honda 750 F2. Got a Suzuki 750GT and again to Honda 750F1. Drove it for about ten years and got me a Yamaha V-Max with a 140HP kit and after two years got me a Benelli 750 with compressor. Then had a Moto-Guzzi California and then a Harley Fat Boy Hard Tail which I regretted immediately and got me a Kawasaki 1300. This was mid-nineties. Got me a GoldWing 1200 Interstate cuz I didn't like the feel of the Kawa, and never looked back. Had several GoldWings since 1996 and now own a 2022 GoldWing DCT and never wanna go back to anything else. Am 62 and still go crossing with a MaicoTwo-Stroke from 1975. Cross machine. I beat Nationals with it at Tielt-Winge near Schaffen in Belgium, where a lot of pros go to rain. I beat the lot because, A) I'm good, and B) the Maico is a two-stroke and has far better accelleration. Lower top speed than the four-strokes, but the accellertion beats 'em everytime...
What a great comment Jimmy! You've had quite a motorcycling "career". I'm 69 so I remember all the bikes you mention. Some of them weren't available here in the states but, as a young man, I lusted for some of the same machines.
The Kawasaki 1300 was a beast of a bike. Large and unwieldy but oh that 6 cylinder engine. You can still find them for sale here in the states, some in very good shape. Parts are a hassle.
I never rode a Suzuki 750GT. It was out of production by the time I bought my first big bike. I bought the 1st year Suzuki GS850G and absolutely loved it. I wish I still owned that bike. I still have the Voyager xii, and still enjoy it, but for the last 4 yrs most of my long distance riding has been on my 2007 Goldwing. I can confirm my suspicion that the Voyager has more luggage capacity. Great bikes all. I love motorcycles and I sense that you feel the same

How many miles on it ?
It had 19000 miles on it when I bought it. It has about 32,000 miles on it now. 10,000 of those were put on on this Cripple 2 Cross Contry trip. I still have the bike and I still love it.

This won't be popular but I have owned a gl 1200 and now own the voyager 12 .sorry goldwing fans the voyager is a better motorcycle in my opinion 😉
Tom, I've never ridden a GL1200 so I only know what I've read. The comparisons were very favorable to the voyager 12. The Goldwings of the era won out in refinement but the voyager 12 was a better value.
I own a 2007 Goldwing which cost 3 times the money. Both bikes were 12 years old when I bought them. The goldwing is NOT 3 times times the bike. I love my voyager.

I would say the Voyager is faster than any of the 4 cylinder Goldwings and maybe even the 1500 Wing. JMO
