  • It was long and hard, but this story has drawn to a close.
To my subscribers who motivated me to see this walkthrough to the end... I thank you!
My final thoughts on the game:
This game tried to be more than it ended up being. All the hints needed to progress the game were there, hidden among random NPC dialog, but as there are around four different "times of day," you miss most of the NPC's and their useful hints. That is the biggest disaster for this game in terms of directions.
The combat was really cool, but unbalanced. Magic was almost useless and then BOOM, suddenly it's the most overpowered thing ever. Half of the characters you get aren't even really worth putting into your party for half the game. But lots of the skills have cool, unique animations.
The exploration was awesome, although it got too confusing once you leave town... Exploring stopped being fun when there was very few landmarks and, worst of all, never ending random encounters. It was easier for me when I discovered enemy repelling items, but I doubt most players realize those exist and how useful they are.
The characters are interesting, but most of them don't get enough screen time. And the screen time they do get isn't satisfying except for a couple examples (Rummy).
The guitar minigame is fun, but it came out of no where and most people accidentally start it before seeing the instructions. There's also only a few songs in the game- not enough to satisfy me for a game where you play as a guitarist!
Honestly, this game is good but also very, very bad. I would say it's a bad game with good features. Compare this game to Zelda: Majora's Mask (no I'm not a Zelda fan). See what made Zelda all around good and how Ephemeral Fantasia falls just a bit short in every category. Just a bit more polish here and there could have made this a great game, but oh well. The PS2 was new and this game just felt like an experiment.

I own this game since I was young and I never could beat it. I tried it many years later with guides etc. but I always gave up at some point. If I'm not completly wrong, you're like the first person on RUclips, who uploaded a compelte walkthrough of this game (finally). Really nice work!

Thank you for making this playthrough.
I'm part of the many who tried this game many years back blind with little success.
Now I couldn't play it myself very readily, so it was very nice to finally see what I'd missed out on.
Definitely a flawed game, but somehow I always got reminded of it. It's got charm, but it sure gives little direction.
I'd say I wished for a remaster of it that adds much desired quality of life changes, but I guess this wasn't quite famous enough to warrant that.
Still, I hope I'll continue remembering this game.
Also, all the way through I was reminded of Suikoden games. Maybe 3 or 4. Just in the enemy designs and the whole weapon upgrade thing.

I can't believe I finally got to see the ending after all these years. I tried SO HARD as a kid to play this game, but I just couldn't figure out where to go. The furthest I EVER got in this game was discovering Claire and finding the perverted old man. But after that, I would become hopelessly lost and frustrated.
In fact, I tried playing this game from the beginning THREE times, just because I thought I was being stupid and wasn't paying enough attention to where I was going or what to do.
I can't believe how freaking vague this game was when it came to trying to point you in the direction you needed to go and what to do. I'm glad it wasn't just me being dumb.
The story line was actually really interesting for its time, but I just can't get over how little direction you get or how weirdly unbalanced the combat system could be.
Thanks for playing anyway. I REALLY appreciate the shit you had to put up with.

A lovable, nostalgic, and deeply flawed game. I remember it fondly.

I LOVED this game as a kid! I played it with my friend, and we beat it a long time ago, but I couldn't remember it very well. We did have to use a guide to get Rummy and getting into the Celestial village (and probably some other things I've forgotten), but this was a long time ago and neither of us had reliable access to the internet, so getting to a guide was really a big hassle, and we were on our on for the majority of it.
Anyway, I understand why so few people make/finish a playthrough of this game, given it's difficulty, and I guess it is objectively a "bad" game (my view is severely tainted by nostalgia, so I think it's great), so I THANK YOU so much for going through all the trouble for this series! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it!

I love this game to bits, but I think to make the game better the story should have been more linear as in helping you on getting the other characters and where to go in the dungeons to get out of them, like the one that started collapsing without using a guide :| Anyway awesome walkthrough, I am so happy that you actually got through the whole game and it was played in English :D

Theres actually 3 endings to this game. This one where all three musicians get together. The solo ending where you don’t recruit beak and fang. And the rummy ending where you don’t recruit fang.
Solo ending = ignore saving kyle the sailor from the monster in the dungeon
Rummy ending= kill the boss in less than 3 turns before fang arrives.

Really, there is a way to get Rummy to leave with Mouse?!?!
      What boss is it?

    • @giovanbisbal2706
      @giovanbisbal2706 5 лет назад

Christopher McSherry i believe its twinboom or something its been years. The boss you fight when fang arrives late in the game. You gotta power level very hard i rememeber being level 71 and still struggling to defeat him in 3 turns. You defeat him and fang never arrives and rummy ends up leaving with mouse.

@@giovanbisbal2706 Hi man, thanks for responding and that sounds like a much better ending. The last time I played this game was way back in 2005 (I still have my save file). I played it for a long time but after a while I just didn't know what the hell to do or where to go and just gave up on it... but now I think I might give it another shot especially since I might be able to get a better ending then this (but this time I'm having a walkthough at hand haha).

Christopher McSherry yeah i started when this game came out i rented it and ended up at level 50 with only Rinna recruited by a miracle i guess i didnt know what to do for so long i ended up doing the steps to recruit her without a guide by sheer massive luck. Then in 2004 i did the guide and finished it. I was one shotting EVERYTHING and the rummy ending was still hard to achieve even at level 71+.

Christopher McSherry and yes now that you mentioned it this is I believe 100% the only game which no one not even a genius can beat WITHOUT a walkthrough. I mean seriously think about it, everything you need to do in specific order and time and days 1-5 until you recruit everyone then MORE cryptic stuff and then the ending.
Seriously there is not a single soul in this world that can beat Ephemeral Fantasia without previous knowledge or a guide. That to me gives this game more lore and a special charm and flavor to the game. It’s kinda like an incomplete game that is complete at the same time if it makes sense.
Fun fact: this game was first shown in game magazines with screenshots as a dreamcast exclusive. The game was supposed to feature sonic in it too. I think since this was konamis first attempt at an RPG like Final Fantasy they kinda came up with this bizarre but still cool and very unique game. I give this game a 4/5 just because I am an RPG classic fan and this game had so many memories and when you gave it a try everything seemed so cryptic that you became frustrated and just made you want to beat the game even more.

Thank you so much for uploading a full playthrough of this game. I played this game years ago when I was in middle school. Back then, I wasn’t able to get very far in the game. Everything was too confusing for me. I was very excited to see this game’s ending. Now that I’ve seen it, I must say it is quite lackluster. I remember you saying this game has 3 different endings. Is this true? I was thinking that the ending would result in Mouse staying on the island and living with the princess in the castle. Is this one of the endings? I appreciate any information on this topic. Thanks in advance.

Holton Sagen Thanks for the information. I would have also preferred the endings with Gallhint and Rummy. They deserved a better life outside of the island. I’ve tried searching RUclips for these other endings, but I didn’t find them. Do you have any links to them?

It's a shame we couldn't get to see the other endings but I am glad we got to see a full playthrough, finally, after all these years! Good show CarrotShticks, good show. *claps*
For those of you that are curious of the other endings, I found a thread on GameFAQs with a script of two. :) Enjoy!

I gotta say, although this game had a weak start, it had a fairly strong finish. I wish the soundtrack was out somewhere to buy/download...

I beat this game once, but I was only able to barely scratch the content as I got no optional character and probably very little optional scenes. Need to give it another whirl sometime. Like you I don't think it's great, but I'm a sucker for time loop stories.

Wow, I remembering trying to play this game 12+ years ago. Had no idea what to do and gave up. The ending was pretty neat. thanks for the upload, very glad to have seen it.
Would of loved some live commentary from you though. Maybe next time!
    Much love from Vancouver.
