Melia is one of the best keepers ever at blocking pk's. I wonder why he never even got a shot at USMNT.
Pretty sure he had trails in his prime with the national team (though he still looks prime to me a lot of the time). I think one of the issues with him is that he doesn't have the biggest wing span and his height is on the lower end of average for a GK.
Doesn't take away from anything imo and he still should have been given a chance on the bench at least with USMNT.
Aggressive keeper that takes risk and comes out too far or too soon sometimes.

Because San Jose actually did well but they just can’t win the penalty shootout both the Red Bulls, and sporting lost to Inter Miami, and they still made it to advance

Compulsory penalty shootouts are not a bad idea. These players will get used to them and have an advantage should they raise their game to compete with European and South American teams.

Lol, those penalties were hilarious.
I just have to laugh at MLS players try to copy what the big boys do - that attempted...I want to say Panenka, but it was definitely not a Panenka as executed...might be the most embarrassing penalty I've ever seen.
How is it "penalties" when the attempts weren't awarded for a foul?
The LOTG calls them KFTM (kicks from the mark). For those that term exceeds their attention span, you can all them a "spot kick." That's even one less syllable than "penalty."
Oh well. Maybe the real offense is having the spectators sit there for 90+, or even 120+ minutes and not being able to decide the outcome during the run of play.
This is a lousy way to determine who advances. Just go back to, as they call it in HS rules, "instant victory" goals. (I guess they're averse to analogizing losing to sudden death.)
If the players get tired, they can just keep running.

The West in a nutshell. All defense, no goals, shots going everywhere but at the nets themselves, and neither team being any good at penalties (shot into the upper deck, stupid attempted Panenka so slow that if the keeper hadn't stopped it it might have not made it over the goal line). At least the crowd were having a good time.
"The nets" have absolutely nothing to do with the outcome of the match. One of the dumbest commentator cliché's is "the back of the net" when anyone who knows anything about Association Football knows that the ball doesn't have to touch the net for a goal to be scored.
