  • 15-year-old Kelly Cook received a call on April 22, 1981 requesting her babysitting services by a man named Bill Christensen. Bill picked Kelly up that night and she was never seen alive again. Kelly's body was discovered months later, but as of now, no one has been arrested for her murder. This week, Savannah examines Kelly's life, a few of the possible suspects, and explains why this case is one of highest profile cases in Alberta, Canada's history.

It blows my mind that there was ever a time when you would send your daughter out the door to go drive off with a man no one knows. Wow.

@Last Chance I'm assuming she knows that, but is just blown away her parents let her go with him. I'm really frustrated they did too..
Although, there was never a time when you could do that, there was definitely a time when people got into stranger's vehicles.
It's not the same situation as Kelly & her parents, but hitch hiking used to happen all the time. Which doesn't happen much now, but we do have ubers which to me also doesn't sound safe.
I hope everybody stays safe out there!

I grew up in the same time as Kelly. No way in hell my mom would have let me get into a stranger's car. What the heck was the mom thinking. You just can't do that. Very sad.

    • @Jeskers18
      @Jeskers18 2 года назад +3

The mom was a bit suspiscous and made sure Kelly asked around if they knew a Bill Christensen. I grow up someone close to the area and that name is incredibly common so of course everyone would say yes, that they knew him. Kelly's mom even wanted to meet the guy before they drove off but Kelly assured her it was fine and to not be so paranoid. I am sure she regretted it until her last day and that truly breaks my heart. I would watch Crime Beat with Nancy Hixt. She does an incredible job covering this case and she even grew up in the same area as Kelly.

Times may have been very innocent back then, but if they were then so were each gender's roles defined even more so that today, so why didn't they wonder why the mother/wife hadn't called to make such arrangements? Even today it would be more normal for a female to make the first approach to a baby sitter to assuage any worries.

Wonder if “Bill” provided any info as far as an address for his residence. Even during that era I am surprised the parents wouldn’t have asked for an address for where Kelly would be. Also, was it possible to trace the phone calls Bill made to the girls. Did the autopsy provide an estimated time of death? Bill could have possibly held her captive for awhile before killing her and dumping her body in the lake. Such a tragic death that could have been prevented.

What if Bill Christenson grew up in Standard or spent some time there in the past and hadn't been a local in a long time by 1981 ?? I think this could be likely especially since there were Christensons in the area but would someone have used their real last time or last name or a family member ? That's risking being connected fairly easily.. I assume all the Christenson's relatives were looked into but with police investigations I've learned to never assume even the most seemingly obvious things.. so that's where I'd look.. relatives (blood and non blood) of the local Christenson's (possibly having another last name) and who had spent time in Standard but wasn't a local by 1981..
I think the likelihood that the perp has some connection to Standard is very very high opposed to someone who picked the town by random with no connection to it whatsoever.. that's possible but IMO pretty unlikely.

I understand that things were done differently back then but I think its incredibly naive to believe that no bad things could ever happen.
I just find it really bizarre to let your daughter go off with a stranger that you didn't even make the effort to talk to. Im sure they wish every day that they did things differently, and obviously the only person to blame for Kelly's death is her killer, its just frustrating hearing that things weren't handled differently.

I know everyone uses the excuses of "it was a small town. These kinds of things never happened there" and "it was different at the time". But my grandparents who would be in their 90s if they were alive, were very careful with their two daughters. They would have never allowed their kids to babysit in a stranger's house. I will never understand why some people are so naive. Mean people has always existed.
I also grew up in a small town and everything happens there, just not as often as in big cities. Plus, people also make a bigger effort to hide gruesome incidents. So, not everything goes public.

Why is it a thousand other creators have ONE sponsorship in a video & she has 4. Bc she’s greedy! Any of those will give you great cases and great coverage without it sounding like their reading off Wikipedia and newspapers.org those ppl are PASSIONATE about these cases and put their all into them. And best of all at most u get a 2 min sponsor at the beginning and that’s it! Some don’t do sponsors at all. I want to know more about the phone call that was to the school by the Christensen guy. Didn't he tell the first girl that he got her name or her phone number from the school. I'd like to know if that was looked into and if the school really gave out a child's/first girls phone number to this man to call for babysitting. Because schools do not give out that information. I want to know if they really did get that phone number from the school have they talked to the person at the school who gave out the phone number. If he did not get it from the school then he had the first girl's phone number. That means he knew the first girl or got the number from the other person who's involved. I'm not sure but I would really like to know about that connection.
Also I feel like the reason that she died it's maybe she fought them too hard I mean you said that was a two-and-a-half-hour drive. I wonder how long the body had been in the water. Maybe she gave them hell. And I didn't know what to do and so they killed her. You would think if this was trafficking or something like that they would have moved her quickly which it seems like they did because she was already two and a half hours away but we don't know how long the body was there.

The family may have lived in a small town, but how naive would you have to be to allow that to happen? Even hearing this now gives me a sickening feeling. Wouldn't you think common sense or gut instinct would come into play?

“bill” had to be a local who was familiar with the area and the family. maybe someone who was a part of the school staff? that would explain how he got the girls phone numbers AND how he knew christensen was a common last name.

the length of the sponsorship isn’t the problem- it’s that it’s in the middle of the video.
just say “this video is sponsored by _____” in the beginning and do the ad read at the end like every other youtuber. you know we don’t like it and we’re trying to give you polite constructive criticism but you won’t listen.

Either Savannah is right and there are TWO people involved, one local and one not local, or there is another explanation. The fact that he seemed to be so familiar with the local community and was using the last name of a family who was prominent in the community leads me to believe that perhaps the suspect had grown up in the community, was known by the locals but not well enough to be remembered over a period of time. Either his family or he himself moved away during his high school years, or shortly thereafter and he returned to the community years later when he was much older and his physical appearance had changed enough so that he was not recognizable to the locals. The reason I believe that he returned to the community when he was much older is because none of the locals seemed to know who he was, even though he himself seemed to know so much about the community itself.

So the autopsy right they think she was strangled. The person who killed her could have been to simple minded to not wear gloves. It sounds dumb but hear me out, if it was a two man job and one person had the brains the brains guys wasnt that smart when he told the guy who was doing it to just pick her up cause what if her parents went out to me him. That didnt happen but that was a simple minded move so could they have found finger prints on her body when she was strangled? And seeing as she was found on the shores of the lake why didnt they search the lake for anything. Also why didn't the police ask around to the people who lived around the lake cause maybe they saw somthing and they new what it was.

Let's talk about the school? Why are you handing out student's phone numbers? Did anyone talk to the school to see if someone called looking for the girl's number, and if so maybe they gave their real info? Idk seems crazy to me that the school was like sure random man who says he is Bill Christiansen, I will gladly give you a child's contact info over the phone. Also, like maybe if he was local-ish he knew the 1st girl to ask for her by name?

Not if “Bill” was a kid when he lived in Standard. Motive either a babysitter assaulted him and his sibling when younger or lost/ caused death of friend or child so revenge. Most likely sounds like babysitter allowed the child to go missing so “ Bill” made the babysitter go missing.

I wonder if the initial 17-year-old victim was on a sports team, like cheerleading or something, and had a game in the perpetrator’s town which is how he became aware of her? I feel so strongly too that the perpetrator had kids so maybe he was watching his child’s game?

Although this could’ve easily been prevented, I can never blame parents for their children being kidnapped. I’m sure it’s hard work to constantly keep tabs on all your kids 24/7. Seems like they tried to have safety protocols in place like verifying the family and having the girls call when arriving. Sounds like the girls did these baby sitting gigs all time and I’m sure there have been times when the parents didn’t really know the family but because of the familiar last name or relation to someone in town, they let them go in the past. It’s just sad they were too unassuming this time where this murderer had the perfect opportunity.

I watched this video after watching your video on Margaret Fox...and hear me out...this could very well be the same guy. Yes, two different geographical locations, but also two very different time frames. The guy who abducted Margaret Fox could have decided to move, start fresh in a small town in another country and blend in with a common name. The strategy for the abductions were the same. Just my thought after watching these videos back to back 🤷‍♀️

The image of the sketch looked like foreign writing. Just me? And I don’t care how different the time was I don’t understand how you don’t even walk out and meet the guy. However I’m sure her parents lived with that decision, or at least her mother for the rest of her life. So sad! And wait I mean what was this guy planning if someone DID go out to the car to meet him? Like there seems like there would be such a high likelihood of that happening where the parents did go out to meet this stranger who was picking up her daughter. Idk- by the way, “seeked” isn’t a word girl, It’s sought. Anyways I pray for her family I’m sure there was Justice for “Bill” and all involved in the afterlife
