When you put yourself out there to help someone as an adult with another adult that you know needs help, and they don’t accept the help and still go back into that environment, it is hard to help someone in that situation. Even nowadays, it can still be hard to help someone who isn’t desperate enough to leave the situation. Not to mention this was in a time period where a lot of these things were not understood well by the public. So the adults stopped believing her because they weren’t educated about how women in abusive situations will act. I don’t think though that anyone can fathom why they didn’t take it way more serious with a child involved, even in those times. Like you said, it is really sad and tragic. 😔😔😔

Hailey Tanguay I never said the victim wanted to be there. I speak of this from experience when I failed to help a friend that I fought so hard to help escape from the situation. She got so scared that she ended up ruining the plan that I helped create with another friend that escaped from an abusive relationship, and she ended going back to him that day. Months after that, he did eventually got the idea and left her for another woman. She didn’t want to go back to him, but she didn’t have much of choice given her whole situation. I couldn’t help much as I wanted other than that plan since I still lived with my family and wouldn’t be very open on taking someone else in.

You have to understand how abusers see the world. In their minds, they are fully realized human beings with every right to everything they want, and they may acknowledge some other people in their lives are the same, but their partner and their children are property. Their spouse is there to provide whatever they want whenever they want it - food, sex, housework, children, companionship, etc. Children are like cars - something to show off, to make themselves look better, and to serve their needs as well.
Abusers don't see their children as unique human beings with their own wants, needs, desires, etc. They are extensions of themselves, and if they deviate from what the abuser wants, or they stop being useful, then they are useless.
Joseph was resentful and jealous of his daughter because she was more successful than him. Which, on the one hand made him look good, but on the other hand it makes him look bad. Plus, her acting career gave both her and her mother an outlet to get away from him and have their own Independence, which is unacceptable, however he also needed the money to meet his own desires.
From that perspective, of course he was angry and conflicted and jealous. He didn't see Judith as a person, she was *his*. His property, his workhorse, and she was starting to defy him.

The thing where Judith breaks down while “all dogs go to heaven” was being made during Anne Marie’s song segment, Judith was looking at the song she had to sing which is basically about wanting a loving family with a nice mommy and daddy, which would be a perfect life contrast to Judith’s which is why they had to get another child to sing it because Judith couldn’t and would have a breakdown and begin to cry. This is probably because Anne Marie’s family and home situation is so much like hers and the song could have been how Judith felt which is very sad to think about. This caused concern so Judith would be taken to a child psychologist to talk about it so it makes sense. Poor little child, she never got that chance

Her story is sad but what more sad is all the people who failed her and the mom. The child was apparently exhibiting odd and depressed behavior because of it and failed to investigate. The Hollywood producers were more concerned about her missing work and losing money than about their safety.
The people who were aware of the dad abusing the mom and daughter naively turned a blind eye after the dad justified is actions as “normal discipline”. Hardly anyone bothered to check up on the mom and daughter.

Just hearing about how many times the mother and the girl told people about what happened in their house and noone taking them seriously seriously pisses me off. I personally had a friend in high school who's mother got into a relationship with my fathers eldest brother. My dads brother was a drunk, he ruined himself so much that he doesn't even resemble my dad or the rest of their brothers, an example would be that my dad and all of his brothers are big guys but his eldest brother was nothing but skin and bones. Anyway he never physically harmed my friend but he abused her mentally by always telling her that she would never amount to anything, that she dressed like a slut and always complained about her around me and the family. I never talked back to him because I was 17 and my family had brought me up to respect our elders but that all changed the week I turned 18, not even a week after my 18th birthday my friend calls me crying and begging me to help her and I try to ask her what was wrong but she wouldn't calm down, after a few minutes she finally said something, and It caused me to run over to her house Immediately, she said, "It won't stop bleeding" I didn't know what had happened then but frankly I didn't give 2 shits and after quickly grabbing some bandages and whatever medicine I could shove into my pockets I ran over to her house and entered her room, what I saw nearly sent me over. She was curled in the corner of her room, there was blood all over her body and she was clutching her wrist breathing hysterically. I patched her up and cleaned up as much as I could, while also taking the knife that was on her floor and shoving it into my pocket. After I got her to calm down and tell me what happened I told her to cover her ears and wait for me to come back in, I then closed her door and went into his room where he was laying on the bed acting like everything was fine and locked his door while I tried to talk with him, after a few minutes of him cutting me off in every subject relating to my friends, his step daughter's well-being and continuing to talk trash about her I couldn't take it anymore and beat the ever loving shit out of him. ( mind you I'm not that big, I'm a female about 110 pounds and a height around 5,7 and have no muscles to show for but the fact that I could have pushed and held him down says something about how badly he's trashed his body ) I was so angry that I wouldn't stop until he stopped talking over me and paid attention to what I had to say. Among other things I told him that it was either the alchohol or family and screamed in his ear to PICK ONE! after ensuring that my friend was safe by locking him in his room and removing any weapons he had into his garage and waiting for her mom to come home I walked back home and proceeded to cry like a baby. I'm not trying to paint myself as a hero or a good person. Main thing I am trying to say is, no matter how fake it may sound always take matters like abuse seriously and take action to ensure that your loved ones are safe! Because if you ignore obvious signals for help then your friend, family even acquaintance could end up like this poor girl and her mom. That man was a peice of shit and a coward for taking his own life afterwards.

Narcissists are the worst especially with addictions. Whether it is gambling, alcohol, drugs or both. You get people with addictions who are only a danger to themselves and are harmless as not everyone is awful. With the narcissists, addictions makes them even worse than they already are. They will scream so neighbours hear, they will smash property belonging to everyone but themselves. Someone you are supposed to rely on and grow from. Fortunately I have a great mother. Unfortunately not everyone had that such as Judith. Even with a good parent, they might not necessarily have the mental or physical strength to stop the other parent. One can say are partially to blame but life is not black and white despite what judges and the jury believe. They make snappy judgments such as taking away children from goof families for missing children, which does far more damage to a child than missing a bit of school as it destroyed a family and that child will end up being abused in various ways by other children and authorities in general. They also make children stay with abusive families despite the evidence and warnings by virtually everyone who knows the child. If someone protects the child, they get arrested for trying to do more for the child than the worthless authorities. Some people were just born to be awful people. Truly evil people. People say having villains be evil for the sake of it is cartoonish yet we live among like that. Where they had a good upbringing and everything but somehow they seek to harm people and destroy everything and everyone. It is more understanding (although not an excuse) if they suffered PTSD through an event or something that made cold towards people but I do not see how one can murder their own child or harm their loving wife/husband or whatever the status may be. I know their logic is warped and everything but killing your own kin for nothing is awful. Possibly some of the darker cases out there.

Unfortunately, people living in an abusive relationship most often won't leave because they're afraid of what'll happen if they actually end up leaving. They're afraid that their partner ends up hunting them down and hurting and/or killing them and their children. They might also still love their wife or husband even though their family life might be pure hell and think that it might be better if they just stay. Judith's mother definitely should have taken her daughter and left while they had the chance, but in most cases it just doesn't happen. I grew up in an abusive household, my dad used to drink a lot. There were death threats, especially towards my mom. Christmases and all other holidays were hell, they were just an excuse to drink. Whenever he was drunk, I never knew exactly what would be going on at home when I came home from school. On two occasions we had to flee to the neighbor's house to call the police when he was getting out of control and breaking things. On so many occasions I wished they'd just divorce. They are still together to this day, and while he still sometimes drinks these days, it's nowhere near as bad is it used to be. Because of what my life was like growing up, I've sworn to myself that I'm never going to drink alcohol. I'm 32 and I've never had a single drop, and I'm much happier this way. Most importantly I never want to end up like my dad. I want to be better.

@@Duckkis I understand that abusive marriages (or relationships in general) can lead to this type of stuff
Where the abused doesn't wanna leave, either through Stockholm syndrome or through fear.
However If i find out my significant other has put a knife to my child's throat and threatened to kill me and her, I'm sorry but that's the final straw and I'd do anything in my power to not only get my child away from this person but to make sure that person is atleast legally punished
I know, I've never personally been in an abusive relationship and i understand the physiological effects of one. However surely there must be some line logically drawn, even if I was scared for my own life from this abusive partner, I would much rather risk my life if it meant saving my child.
Loving parents will do whatever it is they have to do if it means keeping their children safe, it's a natural parent instinct that I find hard to believe can be erased from an abusive relationship.
I'm not saying what happened was this mother's fault, however she definitely could have done alot more than she did. She doesn't deserve blame but her lack of actions still should be addressed as she still was a grownup with the responsibilitys of a parent

Thank you for this comment. This is exactly what I was looking for in the comment section. When it is only you who is in that situation you are a victim, but when you bring a child into an abusive household/situation you become guilty of it as well. Saying that Maria had nothing to do with what happened or that she could not have not known is bullshit. She knew, she cared only for money and material items (even if it was just an excuse - she still stayed) instead of the safety of her child. I have seen this happen several times in real life, where women stay in abusive relationship and I know how hard it is to leave an abusive spouse/boyfriend, but the moment you have a child and you let the child suffer and see the child basically wither away - you are no longer a victim to me. Sorry, but she was deliberately staying in this situation (and I know women who left with nothing - Maria had money, had an apartment, had friends and family…), she was the person who could have taken her away, save her from her father, but she decided to stay instead and made the environment even FUCKING WORSE for her OWN DAUGHTER. To me she is guilty of Judith's death as well. Maria failed Judith in every way imaginable. The fact that she seemed to live her own dreams through her own daughter is just a cherry on top. JUDITH is the only real victim here, every adult around her failed her. This is so horrible, my heart breaks for this little innocent girl.

I'm only a few minutes in, but wanted to correct some things:
    1. Maria was incredibly harsh with Judith and constantly coached her into being a "perfect" little girl. Judith didn't have a choice in whether or not to become an actress, so it's not really fair to say she liked it. She was living her mother's dream.
    2. Maria got together with Jozsef because he showered her with gifts. She stayed with him because she enjoyed the lifestyle he provided her.
    3. Maria took Judith to that skate rink regularly on purpose in hopes of Judith getting recognized by someone in the business. She had coached her daughter ahead of time to laugh loudly and act like she was having the time of her life.
    4. While Jozsef was solely to blame for the murders, of course Maria knew what he was capable of. She had seen him abuse her and Judith, had heard him threaten to burn the house down, and had countless warnings from concerned friends. It's not really honest to say that Maria "did everything right". She might have spoken to friends about what was happening, but when they encouraged her to leave and offered her a place to stay, she ignored it. They displayed their horror and concern, but she ignored it.
In fact, the one time she called police, was due to her abuse, not Judith's. There was no physical evidence, as the abuse hadn't been recent. Then she dropped the case.

i knew a woman who left her abusive husband around the same time as this case. she would put one bag of shoes and clothes into the trash every day, then take the bags in the boot of the car to drop at the refuse station, when she was there she would retrieve the items and drop them at a friends place. After 3 months she finally had enough squirrelled away that she was able to pick the kids up from school, stop at her friends place, pack the car and leave town. Seriously though, if anyone is in a similar position and doesn't feel they can involve the police or a child welfare agency (for a multitude of valid reasons) there are organisations who are volunteer run who will help shelter you anonymously, relocate you and your kids, or even just support you in the home as a friend. Please don't stay with an abusive person, even if it isn't physical, you are still putting yourself in danger. This goes for same sex couples, and men who are being abused too. Thanks for sharing this case, El. As an 80s baby I remember Judith Barsi as a tragic figure but had never heard as much detail around it till now. x

I went through child abuse and I sympathize so much with Judith, especially with her father physically threatening to kill her/cause her great bodily harm and then also how she was pulling her hairs out and having disordered eating. When you got to the part describing her breakdown while at the audition it hit so close to home for me.
I moved out of their house in my early teens and since then my parents- both were physically and mentally abusive- sought tons of help and treatment. They're completely different people now than they were and, though it took a lot of work I now have a good relationship with both of them. I wish more children going through abuse had the same experience, but, though it does happen, it's extremely rare and I hate that. I feel like a lot of times the abuse victims stay, just hoping that their partner or parent will change. I think that was a lot of Maria's problem- she wanted the man she fell in love with back and held on to the hope of that eventually happening- it just sucks so much how she and ESPECIALLY her daughter had to suffer because that was the choice she made. There were so many chances they had to get away and it kills me. Poor Judith was innocent and she was so utterly failed by both her parents

When my stepdaughter was in elementary school a girl in her class was kidnapped and missing a few days (thankfully found alive), and this experience had a profound effect on her; I can only imagine the impact of your experiences.
I was in my late teens and 20s during the 80s so I was unfamiliar with Judith, and it's nice to know she was as sweet in person as described in this video. Your name sounded familiar and I looked at the wiki page about you. Two things caught my attention. First, I see you appeared on My Sister Sam, the show where the young star was murdered (Rebecca last-name-on-the-tip-of-my-tongue). So you were touched by two horrible violent crimes against people you worked with twice. My sincere condolences for experiencing losses from such awful violent crimes twice while you were so young yourself. Rebecca Shaeffer, her name just came to me (the correct spelling may not have however, my apologies if so).
The other thing is, holy cow you are insanely talented! Your long and successful career includes acting, starting a band, playing ukulele, vocalist, songwriter, composer, author of several children's books, illustrator, graphic design, album cover and poster designer, voiceovers, character creator and nominated for 4 Emmys for costume design, styling and set & art decoration and other talents. It also says you bake cakes and you've posted a drawing on your website every day since 2008. Had to laugh that the first reference is to an article called "Parker Jacobs is SO good at everything." Is there anything you can't do?
But seriously, congratulations on finding success and developing so many creative talents. I detect no hint of ego or self-importance in your thoughts about Judith and it's nice to see a good person found success in the entertainment business. (Fun fact, I also worked in the corporate headquarters of a Viacom company for several years.)
For anyone who made it to the end of this long comment, here's the link to his wiki page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parker_Jacobs#Acting

@@leslie6938 Thank you for the sincere and very thorough response. Yes, I have had a lot of experiences I could share about the acting business. I did work on My Sister Sam. I remember trying to play it cool around Pam Dawber because she was a TV crush I had from Mork & Mindy and I was aware of course I was just a silly little boy. Rebecca was personable, talkative and full of energy. You could tell she loved what she was doing and excited about things ahead. Her loss was also quite a tragic shocker. I knew the area she lived in and had a friend living there. Seeing her apartment on the news added to the reality of the horror.
Thanks for the deep dive into my kooky "career", but don't believe everything you find on the internet ;) Best wishes on your channel. You do an excellent job.

      Happy Birthday Judith Barsi 💖
You deserved more than you got
So many children have been harmed by evil abusive patriarchs and couldn't get help even begging for it.
I understand your mother could only do so much, I understand Maria. The police wouldn't protect you. The courts could have taken more than you could recover from, you thought it should have been simpler.
Bless both your souls, every day children will be harmed by their own fathers. In every way abuse happens.
People remember you both, and you are meant to show us that the only time that's too late to get out of an abusive relationship is if you are gone. I hope women are inspired to get out while they can.
Get out, you are beautiful warriors.
Even after so much abuse, never too late.

It should all be put into a trust in the child’s name, and only some of it should be allowed out every month to help pay for things that would benefit the CHILD. Like rent, schooling, clothing, etc.

It is a horrible system. They dismissed me when I talked about my sexual abuse. I feel like they should of had someone keep in contact with the mom atleast because sometimes it’s both parents that fail their child. I know she probably thought she was doing the best she could but when it comes to protecting your child no house or amount of jewelry should matter. This could have been prevented. 😔

    • @Uhhhitsgabby
      @Uhhhitsgabby 4 года назад

9600GTMAN cos should still step in and keep in touch just to be sure. It was no ones fault except that monster of a dad. Cos tried to take the right steps I believe but maybe if they would have tried to keep contact or made her keep her daughter in a different place for the time being besides the apartment it could have been different. Cps still fails people though and it saves some. My experience with cps was really aggressive and I think because of things like this they are that way. They instead tried to break up my family and made it hard for us instead of getting my mom and everyone else the help they needed. It just made my stepdad even more mad when he was able to come back.

And yes, I had to fire it once, he never came past the fence again but would yell from the fence. When I found out about bullying at her school, I reported, fought, transferred.
