I think the railway modelling hobby has so many aspects now and different appeal to different modelling interests. I am like you and have no interest in DCC. It's complicated and expensive and my enjoyment comes from the world of analogue control, block sections and manual routing of my stock. There are those who enjoy the automation, the modern day approach to routing and control, but there is still a lot that can be done with good old "analogue". I cannot get inspired for the current standard of sound effects which to me sound like a child's toy without a decent speaker size in the loco, but there are those who love these aspects of DCC and that is why this hobby caters for everyone. It's what you make of it, not what others do. Thank you for not forgetting a large community of followers who enjoy manual control of their layout.
Loving the dismantling videos. Strangely satisfying and actually really useful as how things come apart is useful in itself but also help on how to build things with ease of removal in mind in the first place. Good to see how much can be salvaged.
Really like your dismantling videos, might come in handy when e.g. you change your mind on a certain part of your layout. I can imagine thinking "gosh, what have I done here" or "that was actually very clever". Also, your approach to reuse as many stuff as possible is great, especially with todays prices... Thank you for sharing!
Hi bill very interesting video on taking your layout apart I have enjoyed all the videos and the way you show and explain what you are doing keep up with your good work and videos Bernard
The fun of building new :0) 10 years ago my little bedroom layout was sadly pulled apart but now I've had fun building a loft layout, yes I'm still working on it, and outside in the rear garden is my large up and down line double tail chaser all on good old D.C. :0). Look forward to your new build.
Just starting to build mine …50 years have passed since my childhood one…..crikey….where’s the time gone…..the really exciting bit is opening the boxes which have moved with me since leaving home…..keep us DC boys running Bill….
I find it sad to see a layout go, but at the same time you have the excitement of the new build to look forward to. I can think of a couple of layouts on RUclips that have been taken apart, probably the most famous one being Everard Junction. There was also an artist chap that was building a model of the Folkstone harbour area. He had to dismantle it before completion due to needing the space. But in your case we have a nice new build to look forward to!
This is fascinating Bill. I'm really looking forward to your new layout and the related videos on making and wiring a traditional DC control setup. I plan to do exactly the same on my next proper (TT 120) layout. Despite having several layouts as a youngster I've never wired for electric points, signals or any form of section control so this will be a real education for me and a great help.
Well, there's no turning back now! haha I think that the anticipation of the new layout overshadows any apprehension about demolishing the old one and it gives the opportunity to learn in the process. Can't wait to follow the journey. The new mic is good too. 😊
Just looking at the buildings in the village, indicates the level of thought you have put in to the surroundings and how realistic it looks. But I also look forward to seeing your progress and I am sure your next layout will be just as interesting if not even better, based on what you have learned from your first layout.
Looking forward to seeing the empty room and the start of the new build. I suspect that starting was difficult for you but I think that now you are getting quite excited (I know I would be).
Actually you are right , there is not that many videos showing dismantling , and it is very interesting as you can see how you constructed it in the first place . I’ve always wondered about ballasting and reusing track ,so that was particularly interesting . I just lay mine on textured sheet .
I think this is the first take down of a layout I have seen. I have seen one where track is taken up but no scenery. This is the first where scenery and buildings have all come off.
It's a brave thing pulling up a layout that took months maybe a year or two do build adding as well a you go along ,but when you start your new layout you will start to feel better and when your trains are running that another great feeling .so don't get down hearted about smashing up things as you watch the whole new world open up and that's a great feeling to .so all the best building you new layout I did it and many others have done the same .what ever you do just remember it's your layout ......
Excellent video, thanks, seeing a layout dismantled actually says a lot about layout construction which is always useful. I'm with you on DCC, I think it's great, but I have so many loco's it would be too costly to chip, having said that I do have quite a bit of Zero 1, Hornby's pioneer DCC system, which has it's faults, however I may use that at some point or on part of the layout. Your lift out section inspired me, I reckon I may make mine a bit more modular. Thanks again.
You could always provide passive provision for DCC in the future i.e. put in a bus wire and some droppers whilst building as it will be a pain to do so retrospectively at some future stage if you ever decide to run DCC locos.
I found it quite traumatic dismantling my lockdown layout recently. just waiting to start the next project. 2 years approximately until our house is built.
Strictly DC myself. I have nothing against DCC, other than my relatively poor grasp of the electrics involved, and my aversion to spending money! Cheers ;-)
@oobill, re. Track paint, I found my method worked well. I bought a can of satin brown spray paint and sprayed it when first laid. (I did find out that polystyrene melts with it though so be careful lol) 😂 but it still looks great still after ballast
Makes me sad this,,there where some really beautiful little random accidental scenes in this layout,,especially when you stopped ur trains .....that lovely little scene with the trees on the background and the natural sunlight coming through the windows. Progress I guess...Great video
Think I may have mentioned I had to take down a friend’s very large layout. It was daunting to say the least as it was L shaped and covered most of a 20x30 area, mist of which was finished. As I was finishing his widow told me she wanted to keep the one section. This was frustrating as she had already lifted the track in that area and I had disconnected all the wiring including a number of points. Not sure how I will get that section back together again. I use my iPhone 11 plus two webcams and have often considered buying a video camera. I think the benefit would be I could zoom in and out easily. I am not sure how that would work live? I run off my Apple laptop with usb extensions. Interested in your thoughts on this. Haven’t figured how I could zoom my iPhone or webcams yet
A bit sad, but less so because at least you have a new one planned imminently. When I took my pride and joy to bits before a house move in 2013, with no prospect of a replacement even in the middle term it was a real heartbreaker😢. I should be able to make a start on its replacement somewhere around 2026… As far as DC wiring is concerned, don’t Peco still do their « shows you how » leaflets? « wiring the layout » tells you everything you’d ever need for DC, including cab control. I couldn’t advise you strong enough to get hold of it before you start on your new layout. All the best mate. Rob
I'm very excited to see what you build to replace this layout; did it have a name? Does the new one? I found your channel after this layout was mostly done, insofar as a layout is ever 'done', but it'll be really interesting to watch the new one taking shape from scratch. Since you mentioned it, I believe this is the only layout destruction video I've seen, and you are indeed one of few channels I follow that is DC (same as my layout), AND by far the best for repair and service.
DC or DCC? Now you have me thinking. I am at point zero presently so can go either way really and I was thinking DCC. Hmm more thinking to be done. Strangely I am enjoying the rip up of your old layout tinged with a touch of sadness. But as you say something new is planned so looking forward to that.
The Track is Dead 💀RIP💀 - Dc 4 me Please - some of my locos are nearly as old as me, and they all have their own individual sounds and Characteristics. Thanks for showing this process Bill - Gr8 Job as Always 🌟👍🏻✨
Please don`t risk all that grit in the bath . We get plenty of rain in this country . Just leave the track out side for a couple of weeks , and a stiff brush will see it all cleaned up .
Very interesting video Bill I've never seen a dismantling layout video before you can borrow my old Hornby dcc controller for a year if you want to change your mind about dcc.
Some DSLRs shoot video better than others. My D7200 doesn't shoot good video. Not 4K and there is way too much background noise. Also focusing is tricky too without being able to see down the lens and autofocus way to noisy. More up to date mirrorless cameras are much better for shooting video or a dedicated video camera.
The difficult part is making the first cut, after that it all goes “tickety-boo”…long live the DC model railroad! Good stuff, Bill.🇨🇦

"It's not much fun getting older". It's when that process comes to a halt that I'm trying to put off for as long as I can manage.
I'll be at Model Rail Scotland on the Saturday. Have a good one Bill 👍

Oh no, not the engine shed. really liked that piece!!! Moving on....
Out with the old, in with the new! Good going. Looking forward to the new baseboards getting in

There is something about pulling up a layout. It opens up different oportunityies and ideas.
Sad but interesting to see Bill.
My layout is DC, I like it that you are staying with DC. DCC is far too expensive, for what you get.
I thought the reason there were no video on dissambling a layout is because a layout is never finished, there is always something new to add to it.
A bit sad, but less so because at least you have a new one planned imminently. You are channelling me to make some alterations to my layout
I'm very excited to see what you build to replace this layout; did it have a name? Does the new one? 100% agree! I'm fully into reuse, restoration and recycling as a life philosophy, so Bill you are the go-to guru for railway modelling 👍
I think he mentioned in one video that his layout doesn't have a name.
DC or DCC? Now you have me thinking. I am at point zero presently so can go either way really and I was thinking DCC. Hmm more thinking to be done. Strangely I am enjoying the rip up of your old layout tinged with a touch of sadness. But as you say something new is planned so looking forward to that.
I think DCC is a hobby on it's own with computer programming and control systems. The big problem is the expense. You just can't do it on a budget.
The Track is Dead 💀RIP💀 - Dc 4 me Please - some of my locos are nearly as old as me, and they all have their own individual sounds and Characteristics. Thanks for showing this process Bill - Gr8 Job as Always 🌟👍🏻✨
Yous stay DC Bill !!

Coming on really well Bill

Maybe the original engine shed Doors were taken by the Riders on the storm?
Well that's it when the track comes up
It was sad watching the Repair barn being removed.
It's possible to wire your layout so you can change between DC and DCC with the flick of a switch.
But you have to be extra careful not to leave the 'wrong' locos on the track in case you fry them. Probably worth making it a little difficult!
I've just started doing the same with mine.👍
Point of no return is fast approaching
Have you considered shooting your video with the DSLR, good results from using mine.

@@oobill I hear you on the 4K. Yes dedicated is better.
Good video thanks lee
i prefer to look at it as a beeching moment
get yourself a Canon R7 great camera, its Mirrorless, shoots 4K video and has subject tracking
😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨
Nice 👍🏻 me Bill 👍🏻
See how you get on
Why is it the stuff you don’t want to keep comes off easily and the stuff you want to keep doesn’t 😂.
Esther Rantzen. She knows... 😉
