Morning Tony, well its never dull moment when you're here in Surrey, this morning I was at football with the eldest grandkid Sam who's 11 and plays for Walton and Hersham junior side. ---- Tony your kitbashing and scratch building is totally inspirational, I love the way you can look at something and visualise what it will look like on the layout. I so wish now I'd had the foresight when I'd started building my kits to put inside details and lighting. I've managed to do some by removing sections of roof carefully and something close to keyhole surgery, not to your standards but me and Alfie are happy. I can go around your layout and remember you building so many buildings some of which I did my own version, one of which was the watertower at South Shields. Talking of South Shields that station is second to none, I enjoyed following the whole process from the very beginnings the fencing and footbridge going in to the crown and glory that magnificent roof. I still think the moment when your attention to detail shone through was the Magpie painted on the ceiling of the station entrance, you told us "I know you can't see it but I know it's there ". I enjoy your stories and the adventures of the boys, I know I'm jumping around a lot but smiling at dear old Fred Dibnah up the colliery chimney, and the glimpse of the ship through the bridge at Tyne Dock. You take care of yourselfs and keep inspiring us mere mortals. It's a privilege to be able to call you a friend, Eddy and his lot, xxx

Good morning Eddy. i have really missed our comment exchanges. sounds like a bright lad, Sam.
you will have to send me some pictures of your version of the Shields water tower. the good thing with you at the moment is that you have a blank canvas. with a new layout. with that in mind you can make buildings to fit those new area's.
I have some found memories when looking back at some of the builds that i have done. mostly trying to work things out. how i can do this. and that. its great to hear from you. keep safe and take care. best wishes Tony & my bunch....lol

The camera seems to be performing well.
I think, from my point of view, making buildings either as a kit or scratch really gets my creative juices flowing. At the moment i don't have room for a layout..

Dear Tony, great vid, love the crispness of the shots. Some very cool angles you took there.
Humbly think I started watching your videos shortly after you dove into ‘the deep end’ of scratch building. As far as I’m concerned, you absolutely hit the nail on the head with what you conveyed about building from scratch, freely translated; that it’s the way to give our own touch to our layouts and representations of what we’re modeling.
As so many others, I too started modeling and model railroading as a kid. I had this little corner in the house I grew up in where I had my train set. Just on a board, really simple setup, way before DCC. Anyhow, because of the space restrictions, I had to compromise for my station building. So, there was no other option than to cut up the station kit, I had before used on the ‘carpet layout.’ Taking this ‘branch line’ opened up a whole new world of balsa, acetate, brick sheets and so on. The fun came in plenty opportunities of fascinations along the track, taken from the real world, or as iterations of whatever I had seen and observed on a trip or holiday.
Years later, i got back into model railroading, after a back injury from a bicycle accident. I had plenty of time and was severely restricted on what I could do. Then I saw an article on the introduction of Tim Warris’s FastTracks rail jigs and subsequently several of his videos on his Bronx Terminal CNJ layout. I was simply astounded by his track work. To upkeep my skillset during the timeframe of the restrictions I started to build my own track from scratch.
Through Tim Warris I got acquainted with the NMRA, their standards and their clinics on scratch building. But what possibly fascinated me most was the fact that this organization even initiated a program for veterans and other folks, with either disabilities or illnesses, to kinda therapeutically help these people in creating their own worlds. It’s just another way to learn to cope, get our minds of things we worry about, and foremost opens new doors to tell a story of a world ‘hurt’ eyes sometimes need to see to heal.
Hey, i know, there’s other things too. Also got into writing at that similar timeframe, just as an example. But the power of making something with one’s own hands is something very significant, where it comes to a healing process. It is a source through which we all can tap in to our imagination and creativity more easily. Maybe, because it touches upon the fascinations we’ve encountered as a little kid. Or, otherwise said, because it rejuvenates the very ability to be able to play. To touch base with our ‘inner child.’
Anyhow, since then I’ve returned to modeling, almost finished the shed in which I’m gonna build my very own small world. As I said before in one of my comments, I will start filming the build of the layout. I’ll show the sweethearts I built the last years and what my imagination and representation of the world I imagine will bring.
For now, have a great weekend, love the invite through this vid of yours. Definitely wanted to give a more in depth answer to your bidding for making more scratch builds.
    Cheerio

Hi Malcom. there are large station kits out there, going for around £70 quid. street scenes do one. I think i must have spent around £300. that is a very good estimate. but it was the time that it took it to build the station. we where in lock down at the time of this build. and i was only working at reduced hours at the time. 4 hours a day on average was spent on this project for 18 months. funny how things have changed. but now i am lucky if i do 8 hours all week. it was a project of a lifetime. and a childhood memory brought back to life. thanks again for you kind words and appreciation. cheer's for now Tony

Hi Tony, a lovely engine and ease of access to cab. I didn’t realise how big a step up SSS was as you expanded your skill set, just shows what you can - do a bit like Neil Armstrong one giant step…. I think you missed a large chunk of your skill base - all that internal detailing, perhaps worth a set of stills - you covered so much ground that RTB just do not, from duke boxes, benches and chairs, tables, bars, staircases & bannisters, tea urns, ticket machines the list just goes on! So inspirational and there is nothing wrong with replacing RTB with your own more detailed models later on which I can see myself doing. All the best Stephen.

I think I need to build some more Metcalfs before I start scratch building but I want to scratch build a factory which has coal delivered and goods sent out plus empty coal wagons and I will kit bash some of the metcalf kits to do that you have been my inspiration to attempt this but first I have to finish my work on the house Thank you Tony

Hi James. why not have a go my friend. do some research on what you want to build. study the photos. see what type of doors and windows that are available that are already made. but most of all do some drawings to get the idea of sizes. and check the location to see if what space you have and make the necessary changes to the drawings. before you make a start. but most of have fun. good luck and all the best. you can do this....cheer's for now Tony

Hi Tony, I was just beginning to wonder if you were ok as I was missing my North Eastern Fix!
Great subject matter it was really good to go back and have a look at what you’ve done and achieved. Of course South Shields is the masterpiece but I have a feeling we may be in for another one with New Hassle at some point.
Camera works a treat mate, lovely sharp images, looking forward to getting back to normal, cheers Tony, John

Would Mrs Simms meet the personal spec to apply to be a member of the crew for the LNER Passenger Tank? Could she ask the Station Master at Tyne Dock for a reference? I trust that she has an exemplary work history and an outstanding Curriculum Vitae, and is able to demonstrate excellent customer care skills.

Now you have got me puzzled. How did the public access the platforms at South Shields? Was there no height difference? Your description of kit bashing underplays your technique. I would describe it as kit modification. No bashing with you!

    • @TONYNORTHEASTERN
      @TONYNORTHEASTERN  Год назад

Evening Alan. that is very true. the south shields station was level with the ground at the entrance originally. and built on a slight slop from king street. for me to make it the same i would have had to make the platform to come to edge of the baseboard. and then slope up from both sides up to the entrance. but yes, that would have been the way to go. if i was to build it again. so in the end i came to bit of a compromise to meet up to height of the platform. i dont know if have watch the full build of south shields. there is a full explanation as i went along. but in the end its worked out quite well.
thanks again for commenting. cheer's for now Tony.
