I would not attempt to fix a car that was in a flood. It’s not worth it, but if you give me 3 months with one of those bikes, and it’ll be back on the road.
I personally restored 2 bikes after Sandy flooded underground garages in NY in 2012. Honda VTX 1800 N and Kawasaki Voyager 1700 full dresser. Both bikes were fully submerged in 12 ft of water for several days. The key is to jump on this right away carefully. Wash the bikes in and out with salt away, I mean flood them with this, several times. If you had water in the engine, pull the plugs, remove oil drain bolt, oil filter, and flush it out with lots of water with salt off. You already had water in it so its not gonna hurt it any more. This is where you have to time yourself. You need to be able to turn the motor over to spit the water out of cylinders, flush the motor, dry it out as best you can, fill it with oil and turn it over. Best of course is to take the motor out and disassemble it. I opted not to do that. Use vacuum to suck out whats left as much as possible. When complete, fill it with oil and turn the engine over. I put acf 50 with each oil change right into the oil. Get to the frame openings and flood frame with salt away. Use vacuum to suck stuff outta there. Repeat several times. Order new electronics and harnesses, fuses, relays, battery. While that's on the way, keep working on that frame, rear swing arm, etc. Flood the frame with acf 50 or any corrosion inhibitor. disassemble wheels, drive shaft if applicable. Clean everything, lube everything. Put it back together. When electronics arrive, replace all wiring and crank up the bike. Start riding it slowly. Ride for a bit and dump oil and filter. I did probably 10-12 oil changes before I hit 30 miles. I would say you can use "cheaper" oil for first couple changes Its a pricey project and time consuming. Just get it done if you want to keep the bike. In 2024 they still run good with 0 oil burn.
I have a friend who lives near the coast and just the air coming off the water corrodes everything metal…His vehicle has rust and oxidation issues as well as all the metal fixtures on his house… A motorcycle submerged in salt water is a death sentence for the engine and all metal parts…It’s a very expensive loss
I have to say that Bert's Barracuda H.D. is an amazing dealership. I have heard so many good things about them. Kudos to them for being such a professional dealership who definitely looks after their customers.
Frames and engines can be saved for building customs. Anywhere thete is a hole where water could get into the frame tubing needs to be flushed with a salt neutealizer like salt away. After it dries, wax coat the inside.
Of course this is just my opinion but after a bike is being flooded it's like a car electronics is not worth a damn if it's been underwater more than three or four hours maybe 12 the motor is going to need new seals and bearings in it I've done my share of Parts alone is going to cost you a lot but what bothers me about this video is is these folks down there telling you that they're going to do all this stuff they're doing it for the parts you get more money out of parts for a Harley than you ever do selling a Harley that's my take on it the best thing that you can do is probably sell the bike for parts and don't refinance just go out and find you another bike you can find there's plenty of cheap Harleys out there right now that's why these guys are on there because they can't sell no Harleys right now come on be real
In my opinion, if the frame is powder coated and there’s no holes I think you can rebuild that bike because we buy a new harness and replace everything and rebuild the motor. I know it would be very expensive but seems to be a waste to say all right, let’s scrap them.
Because the dude can't just be tired today. I could care less about him. But you have the nerve to talk crap on him, while voting for people that don't even know what planet they are on. But Paul is the senile one and the issue..right
The biggest problem with the bikes is that Salt water got into the engine. Corroded the bearings. And crank pins and rods and Cylinder walls.. It will cost to much to fix all that is wrong with them better off to staying away from them
Foreign & domestic companies are growing in total salvage & sell parts only distribution. Fits the parts shortage problems & boosts the support the sport family.
My bike is currently at Bert's Barracuda Harley-Davidson because of storm surge damage, however, my insurance company is refusing to cover the damages because they say they can't see evidence of flood damage. 🤬
Some parts (plastics, for example) may be salvageable. Electronics, electrics, wiring, metal parts and frames are done. The hours of work and cost of replacement parts is prohibitive on an industrial basis. Better to let the bikes be totaled and get another ride. Good advice about unscrupulous sellers trying to market these bikes to the unsuspecting.
If it's your bike that you have an attachment to, you more than likely can't see the extent of the damage and think it's fixable. Salt water is not forgiving when it meets metal and wiring. The cost to sand the metal down and powdercoat it along with changing the wiring is going to be just the start. Engines and transmissions are just far too much to take a chance on.
Saltwater is death to the internals and electronics, forget it! Fiberglass parts can probably be saved. So sorry for those affected as your Bike is a big part of your life!
Cost to repair vs. pre damaged value. It isn’t that they can not be saved it comes down to the cost to save it or rebuild it. Then there is the salvaged title loss of value. In most cases you can replace it for less than you can repair it. I would buy one to rebuild if the cost wasnt so high to purchase one from the insurance co. My labor is for the passion not for the profits and that would make it worth it if it does not have a salvaged title or I planned to keep it forever. You would never get your investment or out of pocket expense back if you ever tried to sell it with a salvage title.
Most of those are parts bikes and there will be lots of parts that can be used. Seats need to have leather taken off and the foam cleaned and dried out, I'd never buy a salt water soaked bike that sat. Good news is Harley may finally be able to sell some bikes off in their over stretched inventory. So much disassembly is going to be needed to fully evaluate.

These bikes 1000% can be saved. These are not ready to be parted or scraped. It’s a loss to the current owners and insurance companies but yes I agree with the “that’s what winters for” mentality. If these bikes sell cheap enough they’re worth turning into customs with new wiring, electronics powdercoat the rusted chrome (too expensive to replace all the chrome with oem chrome). Without a doubt if I got one cheap enough I can put it back on the road literally better than ever. What these guys are taking about is how expensive it would be to repair back to the way it was with genuine Harley parts, Harley dealer labor costs, etc. The frames as well can be treated to neutralize the rust and prevent any future rust.
Sad to say but I think the majority of those bikes are parts bikes, some may be salvageable but all work will have to be well thought out and thorough.
The TRUE expert on RESTORING motorcycles would be the guy Jack Korpela dissed by trying to start a feud with these losers at Bert's. Jay Leno has forgotten more about motorcycles than these guys put together will ever know. Jay spoke the TRUTH about OCC junk, and probably wouldn't wipe his ass with Jack or any of these drunkards at Bert's.
OCC bikes were never meant as daily riders. They show pieces, bar bikes that make a conversation piece. Call it what you want but he become very rich from his so called junk bikes and still doing very well. Leno is rich and spoiled having everything done for him including a staff that clean and maintain his cars and bikes. At least Paul is a real biker that builds them. What you call junk is something you can’t afford.
Jack, hay in Florida any motorcycle, car, truck or plane totaled cannot be titled in this state, that said the frame, engine cases are done! There good only as parts bikes. In other states that may be different. I am a retired PHD instructor having spent most of my life here in central Florida, I know what I am talking about.
Ruined the electronics. If this was 30-40 years ago, put a magneto in it, new generator/alternator and rewire it with 7 wires but this is the price we pay for technology that is not needed.
Bikes will probably parted out to used parts vendors for what is salvageable. Each bike will be a different story and there is no common answer for all of them.
what a load of total BS these guys are spewing,,,you included Jack. the rust on that chainguard was from above. they are easy to saveif the insurance company sells the bike as write off .
I believe I could save most of them, the rust arresting chemicals aren't going to work on chrome. Sell me one for cheap and I'll make a channel stripping them and doing rust treatment, alternatively, I can just do the minimum and show the deterioration over time
I would not attempt to fix a car that was in a flood. It’s not worth it, but if you give me 3 months with one of those bikes, and it’ll be back on the road.
If Paul Sr, told me that it's raining, I would have to check for myself. Legend my Aunt Fanny...
I'd take a hurricane bike over an OCC bike.
Could be used for wall display for restaurant.....
Flooded bikes can be saved. They will have to be disassembled cleaned etc.If you have the time anything can be fixed.

The only thing you can do is chalk them up as a loss

Lots of Spare parts there. The frames won't rust out short term .
Very risky business as you need to do a complete restoration taking it down to frame and build it back up!
Electrolysis can stop the rust on the frame" and metal parts!
Salvage yards will part them out and sell what they can
Yes, I think there are some good parts on there
That looks like a lot to take on.
I've seen guys who go to auctions & bought bikes that had flood damage & made off good
Done over 15 flooded Harleys since hurricane Sandy in 2011. Couple now have over 115k on them. Not that hard to do.
