My custom SNES Classic Mini

- Modded my SNES Classic Mini using Hakchi 2 and added more SNES games, NES, Genesis, Gameboy and GBA games.
I couldn't add much GBA games because they eat storage for breakfast.
And yes during recording I noticed that I made a mistake with one of the box arts.
I find it hilarious that Sega games sound amazing on a Nintendo console 🤣
Does that surprise you? The SNES had a much more advanced sound chip than the Sega Genesis/Megadrive. Gen/MD had only one set of sounds and a few selected slots for samples. Those were most often used for sound effects and not as instrument channels. This is why sega games from that era all sounded the same, with very few exceptions. All games used that same waveform library the chip could generate. Crystal clear sound, but very raw and quite limited. Like trying to produce hundreds of albums with varied music using only one synthesizer.
The SNES was all sampled based instruments, which also had its drawbacks especially if the game was big, and where they had to compress the instuments making the music sound muffled (most often in skimped, fast cashgrab multi platform ports). But if done right, the SNES had just as crystal clear sound as the Gen/MD, even in huge games like Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, and Donkey Kong Country.
But to address you comment, the reality is, you could make a SNES sound like a Genesis via samples, but never make a Genesis sound like a SNES. It just wasn’t built for that.
In this case however, it’s all kinda irrelevant because the Mini consoles aren’t actual consoles. They are glorified Raspberry Pi:s designed to run emulators. (Although amazing and adorable... yeah I got NES/SNES/Genesis/PS1... because I want them assembled on my game shelf 😊)
The Genesis games run on what essentially is a software version of a Sega Genesis, not a SNES.
You probably know all this, but wtf I just had to. ;))
Well i want to say that if it has only gba games on it not snes and other systems games on it. The reason is simple titles. Gba has much better and variety of titles you can play from arcade graphics style street fighter 2 final fight to snes graphics style and nes style fds collection.
@@My2Cents1 Sorry but you can't make a SNES sound like a Genesis and you can't make a Genesis sound like a SNES. The YM2612 sound the Genesis has if very specific soumd just like the SPC700 on the SNES is specific. Not all Sega games from that era sounded the same, their were differences I think you need to do more reading my friend because you clearly sound ignorant making such outlandish comments.
@@VirajKathwadia
I know and love both consoles very well. They both had their strengths, but for Genny, music versatility sure wasn't one of them.
SNES music was sample based whereas the Genny worked off its own internal Yamaha2612 synthesizer chip which made up most of its sound resources. As such, in theory you could sample all the most signature sounds from the YM2612, them use SNES a game, effectively making it sound like the Genesis.
You could never do that in reverse, because the Genesis have very limited sample capabilities, especially for use in music. That's why all the Genny games sounded the the same, which made their music feel a bit generic. The advantage of that was of course that the resources for music took up very little space, whereas on the SNES they took up a lot.
@@My2Cents1 Sorry I wholeheartedly have to disagree with you when you talk about music versatility when it comes to the Mega Drive. The Sample based stuff on the SNES was great when listening to some of the lovely orchastra themes from ActRaiser, Terranigma and Chronotrigger, this is something the YM2612 could not do. You talk about sampling the signature sounds from the chip, but lets be blunt that hasn't happened and the clarity would not be crisp and if it could happen I'd like to think Tommy Tallerico would have given Earth Worm Jim (A Mega Drive Game) a proper sound unlike with the inferior sound the SNES gave out. Frequency Modulation was a skill to learn to make music for and it took some talented sound programmers to get it right such as Yuzo Koshiro with the streets of rage soundtrack and Revenge of Shinobi, you can't replicate that on SNES. I have no idea what you are talking about stating that all the sounds on Mega Drive sounded the same, the soundtrack and tones from Masato Nakamuras Sonic the Hedgehog to Rob Hubbard's theme to Desert Strike are on two different levels you must tone deaf if you think they are the same. Whether or not more or less was taken up was irrelevant, you clearly need to play more Sega Mega Drive games because it appears you are one of these Nintendrones that lack experience in hearing just how great and varied Mega Drive music is. Music is subjective and I get you have your preference but you're wrong in thinking that the SNES could replicate Mega Drive sound, it can't. Guitar and Bass sounds weak on SNES compared to Mega Drive.
I want this so I can play Pokémon on the tv before the Switch
Would you be willing to share your console icons(SNES, NES, GENESIS, Gameboy, GBA) and back folder icon?
Nicholas Willoughby
Hackchi has them
default icon pack
btw u can also use the retro redux icon pack (its so cool)
Im paying a kid to mod mine tonight. Hes going to put 270 games on it. Im excited. I play the hell out of my SNES already. I grew up on NES and SNES and Sega and Arcade rooms... Since getting this SNES I realized I still prefer retro games over modern games.. I wish it could go online. I love high scors games too..
How is it?
If you got a computer that's basically a steal 😆
unless the guy solders an sd card to the board...
But anyway you can fit more than 120 games for sure
I wish I got this thing when I had the chance, even found it on store shelves too
The emulation potential is staggering.....
I now appreciate my dad +10 for giving me his a few years ago
I bought terranigma on Snes for $50, turned out to be the German version. Glad you showed it as it doesn’t play as nice as the other roms
Ik im late on this but i have a suggestion for the nes games. It would take up more space but u can add a hsqs file to ur snes classic making it so u can launch the nes classic os/kernel from ur snes classic. Im not a expert at tech but its like a rom except instead of loading a game it reboots the system to the nes kernel/os making it a nes classic but in a snes classic. You can also add the japan versions of them too.
you can add more storage with an otg adapter and one usb
I’m a total sucker for these mini consoles. I know I can put games from multiple consoles on one Mini, but that’s not the point for me. I want all the consoles on my game shelf. So far I got NES Mini, SNES Mini, Sega Genesis Mini, and Playstation Classic (which btw is an amazing little mini console once properly modded). As such I installed only GB/GBC core on the NES, and GBA core on the SNES.
I know I sound totally OCD... lol.
Sounds great👌
How to creat the separete folders with the differents Icons for each games?
Yes
I'm curious too
Yall know hakchi has tutorials same as RUclips right? Lol
@@PrivateBryan son of a lbitch
hello, just discovered this very old video, wanted to ask: how did you achieve the structure in the menu where you have the SNES first, then NES then Megadrive, then GBC & GBA? when I manually make those folders in hakchi it will always default to sorting them by alphabet in the Menu, for example, my GBA folder is of course before my GBC folder.
I know that GBA games can be played on the SNES Classic but Im currently trying to fix an issue on it. Games work fine but I cant get gba games to save state. Everytime I get a C9 error then a C7 error and saves inside the rom get wiped. Would you have a solution by sny chance? Would greatly appreciate it! Using newest hakchi with web installer and have retroarch with cores already installed
Great video! Roughly how many additional snes games can you fit on the console given the storage isn't exactly massive?
the snes has 280mb internal storage, it can be used for games ;)
Ok this is old but both the snes and nes classic can also be modded to allow an external USB to be used, people have 250gb snes classics.
So, I just wanna add 3 games to my console: Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Do I just use hakchi to do that?
King Dedede?? Does that apply just Genesis titles?
Will other consoles supported on the Wii U's virtual console will be natively supported on this device?
The only games that run on the "native" emulator are snes games. Everything else runs on retroarch cores (other emulators like genesis plus, snes9x, mame etc)
But define what you mean natively.. they seem to run perfectly and launch from the snes mini menu as normal so that's all you want right? :)
Jonathan Beattie nothing that needs me to install anything else other than the ROM
Search "install retroarch on snes mini" That should explain everything you need within 5 minutes.. its quite simple. It's basically drag and drop and ticking boxes lol.
Yeah man, is too easy
Is there a way to put the original 21 games in a folder alphabetical with over loaded games or does it have to be separate? I noticed you have a folder that says more SNES games.
Yes, you can put any game in one folder. but you can't have more than 63 games in one folder otherwise the system will malfunction.
When you hack it and add othere systems do the original snes games use the built in emulator or is everything running on retroarch? nice build!
Jon Lennins it’s running on Linux
Jon Lennins The original games still run on the systems native snes emulator (which is called kanoe) anything else can run on retroarch (even other SNES games that can't play on the native one.)
Hi, that's a nice tidy setup!
Is there anyway to make the gameboy games screens smaller with maybe a gameboy border around it? They look way too blown up on a big screen for me :p I believe retroarch can do this but I'm not sure how.
I kno this is two years old but I just figured out how to do it. you would click start and select to get to the hack menu. Press back and go to settings, under settings you’ll see video. Click on video then click on aspect ratio. From there you can change the ratio for gba games. I make them the 1:1 ratio since it looks the best for gba games. I now play legacy of goku on tv without it being stretched
Ryan Davadi thanks! I've since been learning alot about retroarch and have learned how to do it, even applying Gameboy overlays.
Jonathan Beattie that’s dope bro! I made my nes classic into a gba player. I love playing these games on a tv lol. Then I got snes and sega games on my snes classic. Wbu
@@Itsfayd is there a way to trade pokemon on gba on this? Curious if anyone knows
How do you get that structure? when I upload games they just end up alphabetically, not per platform
you can organize them and make folders within hackchi
How did you make the custom folder icons?
You can apply them through Hakchi
Terranigma, good choice
Wonder if you can hack Nintendo DS games on to it yet, would be nice to have Platinum, Heart Gold & Black.
err the performance would probably not be the best, and not to mention that you only have around 260MB free storage for games.
Yeah I guess, eh well I'm happy with Pokemon Yellow, Gold & Ruby.
Thx for inspiring me to look up how to hack a snes mini I already had one but I am so glad to now that it’s possible to play sonic games on snes also this is I think my 2nd time watching and thx 😊
Do you use the controller that comes with it?
Little Questionen. I want Kingdom Hearts Chain of memories, pkmn fire Red and mystery doungen on my snes Mini. Would they fit? And Play?
And have someone some recommended Games they are Fun ? ^^ pls and thx
yes but GBA rom you would have to compress because they can be big, if you want to fit more roms on your mini
How did u get the boxes for the certain emus(consoles) with the games inside like the gba box etc
hakchi let you create folders
@@NexXxus86ty
Can you use Super Game Boy colors and borders with Game Boy games?
ColeNadsProductions If the emulator supports it, yes. Otherwise there is mods to import your own
how stable is pokemon on the snes mini?
The games work fine enough, the only problem is that it's imposible to do a get all pokemon because of the lack of a link cable or anything like that
We just need a way to do a fast forward hack
okay pokemon on snes mini .... i need to know how i can fix the problem with the REAL-TIME-CLOCK because berrys wont grow & stuff, does anyone know how to make that work?
And I already have like 100 something games i just want to add 6 more without resetting the whole thing can I do that?
Yes
do you know how to fix the c8 error?
dave_mx85
I guess just reflash OG kernel and then go back to the snes mini. Do restore factory settings. Then reinstall hackchi
wow no streets of rage?
Where do you get your Roms from. I Use to use Emuparadise but a lot of the Nintendo stuff has been removed.
kgcyoutubeaccount
the eye.net has rom files for every game ever. They store files to ”preserve history”. Otherwise Romhustler or Romsmania/Loveroms
Easy to find. Just google
Very nice.. Why don't you release a tutorial so I can do the same to my nes classic?
They're everywhere on youtube...
How did you do this?!?!?!
I wasn't going to buy one but I may now knowing that you can hack it.
did u end up buying it? I did and modded it lol.
Hi, is there a noticeable input lag ? Thanks.
depends on the core and retroarch version you're using.
But you can have it so there is barely any input lag.
@@NexXxus86 All right thanks.
Hello, please tell me, I have on snes mini installed hakchi2 ce 3.8.0, Sega 32x games especially mortal kombat 2 slow down and fps drawdown, picodrive 1.92 emulator, how to fix or what installations on the emulator to set? Thanks.
Use the properly emulation core such as Genesis Plus GX. If that doesn't help, then the game was not made properly to be played on snes. Same thing happens when you try to play DS Games.
Juegos de arcade no funcionan acá. No⁉️😥
What website did you use for the genesis roms??
He can't tell you that
Is there any way to trade Pokemon on the SNES?
Nice!!
Can you run sega Dreamcast emulator on this as well. Just a question i thought could be useful.
Will this run Crysis 3?
Oliver Martinez
I don’t think it could run Dreamcast because that’s a different chip
Will all these games last forever on the system
And how do you play duck hunt on snes mini with out the gun?
Nothing is permanent, unless you want them to be, on this console. Meaning, you can add and remove them, if you wish it so. They won't just disappear one day.
Unfortunately, there is no simple solution, to play lightgun games, without a functioning lightgun and a crt television. Maybe some day, someone will come up with a way to make it happen, with some hardware modifications, but as far as I know, they're still reliant on old TV tech, to work. (phosphors, and such).
Man I wish I can just pay you todo this for me PLEASE!!!
I have the system I just need it moded.
Do it yourself. It takes ten mins unless you want custom folders and custom menu music
That menu music is hilarious, where is it from?
eh? from the SNES Classic Mini? I never changed the music.
It’s a SNES midi tune they put together using the Super Mario World instrument set, I think. Needless to say it sounds VERY snes. ;P
I put on command line global --retroarch and add module for genesis but it doesn't work. It is possible you to help me? Thanks.
did you install the retroarch and corepack?
--retroarch is for snes games that are packed with sfrom header.
For Genesis you use the script /bin/md script
i need tutorial for this pls give me a link
Well. Now i can buy 😂😂
One question: if you have the 21 original snes games and want to mod the console and add GBA games. How many GBA games would fit in. Im looking to add gba games only on my snes
It depends. you have around 300MB of free memory to add new roms.
How do you get the games working
Hey Friend. Looks like you have too many games in a folder. You might want to limit the amount of games to around 40 max per page. Also you can change the icon for the back folder.
How do I change the back icon? That's the last thing I don't know how to do lol.
How did you get Teranigma and Illusion of Gaia to work? I've tried using them in Retroarch to no avail. Maybe you can point me in the direction of Rom files that actually works for it.
Nophoria you need to put --retroarch at the end of the commandline otherwise they gonna run on nintendos emulator. Rom files I used are good dumps with the [!] at the end
I did that but these two won't work, maybe you got good roms.
He's right, just add the command line changes and try different roms. Took me a couple times. Hardest ones for my game line up were the English translated Dragon quest vi and Der Langrisser ... Those took some tinkering
Nice, similar to mine. You should add star ocean and tales of phantasia, and secret of mana 2
How are you perfectly recording this without anyone?
anyone? I have an HDMI capture card in my PC.
I envy the fuck out of you. I couldn't do this even if I tried
Bs it's easy as pie
can somebody tell me the links for all the things he has?
Well now you can play ds games on this!
When I put Games from other consoles, I can play them but I can’t leave them or use save states. If anybody sees this please help. I can’t find any way to fix this
you need to set up a soft reset button combination for the controller in hakchi.
You Can actually get a classic nes with 800 games of every consele no game card slot tho
Yeah those are Chinese knockoffs tho
Just get a NES Classic instead
So you basically turn this thing into the Virtual Console
Can I add gameboy color games into my Mini NES??
yes
Can I please tell me where to find rom s emuparadise got rid of most of these Nintendo ones please reply
The Meeper Laper romsmania.com or Loveroms.com or the-eye.net
Will there be a tutorial on the boy abvanse game?
whats boy abvanse?
@@NexXxus86lol i thinj they meant game boy advanced maybe
which site you downloaded the games?
emuparadise to name one of them.
¿Porqué tienes 2 Pokemon red, 2 blue y 2 silver?
Would I be able to get a PSP emulator?
only a few less demanding games would run, snes mini CPU is not very powerful, you would be better off buying a used PSTV for around 100 bucks and hack it to play PSP using Adrenaline, it plays 100% of all PSP games.
Can this be made to run on pc ? Has anyone done it. I know there's emulators but I want the snes interface
you can use a skin for other interfaces like emulationstation. The original snes mini interface can't run on PCs because it was compile for ARM CPUs.
you could however get it to run on a raspberry pi probably with some effort by reconstructing the file structure and installing the neccessary depencies.
Cuantos años de editacion
1º Es edicion no editacion.
2ºSi piensas que es falso,no no lo es hay programas para moddear la consola y añadir mas juegos.
How many games can it hold up in there? How much space this board is giving in there?Because i am thinking to buy one of those allot!
T@wesomE uhm about 260MB free space for roms. The system and preinstalled games are taking the rest. If you want more storage look for the USB OTG mod
how bad dose gba games eat your storage and is there a solution to fix a bricked snes classic
awesomecat3345 the awesomest
I’ve never heard of anybody bricking one and the GBA games do take up a lot of space.
How do i get this??!!
Can I do this with sonic mania?
I don't think sonic mania would work cause its so new. Even though it has an old art style it's probably way more demanding than n64 or gamecube games and n64 games are already kinda iffy on the snes classic.
what rom site did you use
How did you get the GBA Emulator ? Please can you send me a Link ? :D
