  • On this video I undertake an attempt to activate Silver Hill Mountain, Co. Donegal, Ireland for Ham Radio SOTA (Summits on the Air).
It was my first time using my newly purchased Xiegu X6100 on the field.
I also carried my overnight gear including tent and cooking utensils etc. to see how it all fitted with my radio gear.

Thoroughly enjoyed that Dave and something i am just organising to do myself minus the tent although listening to that wind i may have to.

Looks like fresh weather for hiking and tenting 😁 Cool that you got the Norwegian hiking food 😉 I usually use about a cm more water than it says, and leave it for 10-15 minutes, depending on the type

      Hi Kjetil,
Yep that was actually tasty stuff…
And like you said and like I was advised at the shop… a little extra water and a little extra time works well 😊

Yeah and in fairness I’ve used it a few times since with more success (but not on a windy SOTA yet).
I noticed that if I turn the volume to max and then switch to RX gain, I can use the gain to essentially get higher volume again.

I run my x6100 with a old BHI Noise Cancelling Speaker [NES 10-2] from a spiltter on the external battery, makes a very useable set when not using the internal battery

Thanks for the great video. Fun fact: I bought the x6100 for the 2024 holiday in Ireland!
Now I'm looking for information to get the best out of the 5W of the device. Your video today brought me a little closer to my goal.

Nice one Dave, Pity about the speaker setup. I use headphones on mine and it's 100%
Receive wise, i find it excellent. That said ive only used it a few times so far in far less windy situations. Phil 9kp had a loan of it and found it ok. His only feedback was the screen was hard to see in the bright.

Yep I’ve had that issue with the screen too… on my list Campervan portable op.. (short video recently on channel)…

Doing your bit for the Irish tourist authority. The waist deep bogs will have the visitors flocking in.
Interesting that I could hear the stations calling you on the video. The flapping tent surely didn't help.
Anyway, well done for getting up there. Let me know when you get your overnight pack down to

Well done Dave. I did wonder about the speaker on the X6100. I've got the X5105 & the speaker is horrendous (pretty much unusable), which is a real shame as I absolutely love the form factor.
I have been looking at the X6100 wondering if they had used a better speaker than the X5105. Apparently they haven't!
