- On this video I undertake an attempt to activate Silver Hill Mountain, Co. Donegal, Ireland for Ham Radio SOTA (Summits on the Air).
It was my first time using my newly purchased Xiegu X6100 on the field.
I also carried my overnight gear including tent and cooking utensils etc. to see how it all fitted with my radio gear.

Great video and activation Dave good to see you out and about. It's all in the name of science.
Fab work dude

Thanks Lee😊
If you don't have a soggy foot story doing SOTA in Ireland, it never happenned lol. Great job Dave!
Exactly! 😝
Thoroughly enjoyed that Dave and something i am just organising to do myself minus the tent although listening to that wind i may have to.
😜 hehe,
Thank You! 😊
Looks like fresh weather for hiking and tenting 😁 Cool that you got the Norwegian hiking food 😉 I usually use about a cm more water than it says, and leave it for 10-15 minutes, depending on the type
Hi Kjetil,
Yep that was actually tasty stuff…
And like you said and like I was advised at the shop… a little extra water and a little extra time works well 😊
👋
Great video Dave!
Thanks Paraic 😊
Well done Dave. It’s a shame about the speaker on the Xiegu. You are not the first person to notice this. 73
Thanks Tim..
Yeah and in fairness I’ve used it a few times since with more success (but not on a windy SOTA yet).
I noticed that if I turn the volume to max and then switch to RX gain, I can use the gain to essentially get higher volume again.
My activation of Belmore and Tullybrack required a tent too.
😊…
My plan is to do an overnight soon with 2 or 3 summits.
I run my x6100 with a old BHI Noise Cancelling Speaker [NES 10-2] from a spiltter on the external battery, makes a very useable set when not using the internal battery
Thanks Julian…
I’ll look into that👌🏻
Thanks for the great video. Fun fact: I bought the x6100 for the 2024 holiday in Ireland!
Now I'm looking for information to get the best out of the 5W of the device. Your video today brought me a little closer to my goal.

Great to hear Micha…
We’ll that was recorded a few months back and I’ve used the radio a good few time since so I’ll be giving more feedback on the 6100 soon!
Nice one Dave, Pity about the speaker setup. I use headphones on mine and it's 100%
Receive wise, i find it excellent. That said ive only used it a few times so far in far less windy situations. Phil 9kp had a loan of it and found it ok. His only feedback was the screen was hard to see in the bright.
Yep I’ve had that issue with the screen too… on my list Campervan portable op.. (short video recently on channel)…

Doing your bit for the Irish tourist authority. The waist deep bogs will have the visitors flocking in.
Interesting that I could hear the stations calling you on the video. The flapping tent surely didn't help.
Anyway, well done for getting up there. Let me know when you get your overnight pack down to
Thanks Fraser..😊
I might have to travel to Scotland to get a lesson from you on the pack front to get down to that weight!
My foot massager alone is 2.5kg. 🦶
@@IrishHamRadio and here's me thinking it was your jammies and hot water bottle.
@@theradiorover that’s 1.3kg (not including water)
@@IrishHamRadio I thought you'd carry it pre-filled. 😂
@@theradiorover don’t need to… my bladder is pre-filled.
Well done Dave. I did wonder about the speaker on the X6100. I've got the X5105 & the speaker is horrendous (pretty much unusable), which is a real shame as I absolutely love the form factor.
I have been looking at the X6100 wondering if they had used a better speaker than the X5105. Apparently they haven't!
Thanks James..

Good effort Dave under those awful windy conditions. Looks another interesting location, any Geocaches up there? 20m has been poor here for a few days yet all of a sudden the band is wide open due to a contest 😏73 Chris M0RSF
Thanks Chris 😊..
No geocaches on that one unfortunately…
But I did get one or two in Tenerife (videos pending) 😜
You really should feed tht dog.😊
😂
What model is the sunglasses 😎
@oakley Ridge Back 😎
I’ve heard the x6100 speaker is terrible. Is it possible to use the headphone jack with a small external speaker to bypass the internal speaker?
Yes it is, and yes you can.
As Leonard says.. yep…
I don’t really want to carry anything else though to be honest! 🫣
@@IrishHamRadio good deal, extra weight adds up quickly. I’m still on the fence with the xiegu 6100. But the price just can’t be beat for a portable HF with an ATU.
@@dugbohamradio to be honest from what I’ve seen so far (used it a good bit since this video), it is definitely worth the money… and I haven’t even got into experimenting with different firmwares.
