This was a horrible, horrible case, partly because it might have been prevented if Michael Taylor had gotten appropriate mental health care for his depression and never met that awful cult. Religion is a great comfort to many, but it's also one of the most destructive forces when misused
While I agree completely, I also think they could have just _started_ with exorcising "murder" and "insanity," and sent him home with, I dunno, the demons of being lazy and eating too much or something, which might be the part of this case that has always infuriated me the most. They sent a _clearly_ mentally unstable man home with the promise that they'd remove murder and insanity _later?!_ And only ONE person thought to point out that might not be smart?! What a relief that Christine (as I understand it) had sent the kids away
My faith in Jesus does help my depression but God also gives wisdom to seek professional help. This cult was already run by the enemy (Satan). It probably led to full blown crazy or possible possession. Sad when people fall into the trap of false teachers. Praying that all will come to know God through the one and only way, His Son, Yeshua (Jesus).
Studies have shown that chronic depression changes your brain chemistry. Religious nonsense would have done nothing. Even counseling and meds might not have helped. But doctors exist for a reason. If religion actually helped heal, medicine wouldn't exist

The cult and then the people who cling to it. Everyone who belonged did not become a brutal killer. It is nice when occasionally a cult and its leaders are taken to task, but it is not common for some reason.
I have a pretty strong stomach for stuff like this but this one made me uneasy. Those cult members took advantage of a clearly sick man and took no notice to a woman’s plea for help. Instead of getting him the help he needed they exacerbated his delusions. They are just as guilty as he was of this murder.
I am actually starting mortuary school in January, I also do not have a weak stomach either, but there is something about knowing what a human did to the deceased in real time, than the aftermath of it. It's possible for him to be a psychopath AND the church to be a cult. Honestly, I think he saw in all this flailing and religious nonsense a way to avoid responsibility. He wanted to kill his wife and cheat on her, now he had the perfect excuse. The fact that he was allowed to see those kids again and to go on living as normal is especially cruel. If you are that mentally ill, you are too mentally ill to be around the public. The courts clearly have no clear grasp on what to do in these cases.

I usually agree with light sentences when dealing with insanity, but not with this case. I have 2 points. 1, 4 years of treatment for the horrors that he committed would be not sufficient to make him not a danger to society. 2, I personally think that he wasn't insane, as he never showed any symptoms of psychosis before he joined the religious group. He had depression and that isn't always psychosis. His was depressed because of his chronic pain. I think he just wanted to get rid of his wife. I mean, if he was possessed by evil, why would he want to kill his wife whom he thought was also evil? He also said he was relieved after the murder. He was telling the truth this time. It's funny that when he was released, there were no reports of him relapsing and subsequent hospitalizations? There is no cure for psychosis and even with medication, there are always relapses. Just thinking?
That's fair, but there is plenty of evidence of people have psychotic breaks and heaps of evidence for how incredibly susceptible the human mind is to cults and their subsequent mind-warping nature. Personally, I do think he had some sort of psychotic break, though I do agree that 4 years of treatment probably weren't a big help. I've heard about this case before this video, and I believe he actually tried to commit suicide several times following his release/prior to the incident mentioned in this video. As for there being no reports of him relapsing/etc., he changed his name at some point so it's possible there have been and we simply do not know.
I agree. He only flipped out when he was accused of having an affair with Marie, the (21-year-old!) cult leader. Based on the amount of time they were spending together; I'd say the accusation was warranted. When his wife's accusation put a stop to the affair, he was enraged and decided she had to go. I would be interested to know if he and Marie kept in touch after the trial. Her nonsense about being the "demon's target" and only saving herself through saying the magic words was pure deflection. If it wasn't for Marie, Christine (and the dog) wouldn't have been killed. Today, in cases of violent offenders being deemed not guilty on grounds of mental illness, the judges don't decide how long the offender spends in hospital. They are held indefinitely, and only ever released if the treating doctors are confident that they won't be a risk. I wonder if this case led to those changes.

Untreated mental illnesses combined with delusional religious beliefs combined to create this horrific situation. More proof to me of my choice to leave religions Behind has been the best decision I’ve made. To each his own. Poor woman and children.
Please don’t judge ALL religions on this one case. That is the same as denying ALL medical care because of one bad Doctor- or forgoing ALL hair salons because you once got a bad hair cut, or never going out to a restaurant again because you once had an awful meal at a restaurant AND the list goes on. Educate yourself.
Isn't it good that there are true Christians out there doing God's work and protecting us against those scary atheists who have no morals and who go around brutally killing people?
Yeah 'cause mental health professionals are so much better than clergy, always treating mental patients with the best care, before they lobotomize them, or I guess these days they just give them chemicals to create the effect of a lobotomy
While I'm an atheist too, and think the actions of the cult and priests absolutely encouraged, fed into, and actively pushed him further into his delusional state, it wasn't religion or the cult alone that made him do this. There had to have been a severe underlying psychotic illness in this case. The manner in which he murdered her is so horrific, I absolutely think he believed in his delusions, and then had sick people who made it much, much worse.
Well I never thought I'd have a penchant for this content, but I have thoroughly enjoyed what I have seen so far. So much so it is now a staple to my daily routine.
Oh good lord. When I had the video paused I checked the release date for “The Exorcist” - October 1973. Wonder if he saw that movie. This also reminded me of a story I read about an interview with a retired Scotland Yard detective around 1960. His most vivid memory was his first night as an 18-year-old patrolman, responding to one of the Jack the Ripper murders. As a Christian I’ve had occasions when I wondered about the central image of Christ crucified, if it sometimes inspires violence in individuals, congregations, or governments.
My thoughts entirely. Also pretended belief,so you can blame your actions on "satanic/demonic/evil spirit possessions". "An admirable evasion of whoremaster Man; to lay his goatish disposition to be charge of a star!" (Edmund, "King Lear, 1; 2).
@@davidhollingdale5408 “Thou, Nature, art my goddess. To thy laws my services are bound.” Edmond makes such a beautiful and persuasive speech - but he doesn’t turn out to be such a fine fellow in the end. I love ‘Lear’. I’ve captured so many passages in my mind, and they come up to my consciousness all the time. “Nothing?? Nothing will come of nothing.” “He hates him much that would upon this rack of life stretch him out longer.”
The misery, horror and wholesale slaughter religions have caused it this world is truly astounding. I ended this episode saying "And this is why I hate religion" instead of "Well, I never!"

Lock Michael in a room and have someone keep watch until we get the worst demons out? ❌ Let him go back home with his wife while still possessed by angry demons. Even though Jesus spoke to the girl to get rid of now? ✅
Thank you especially for this one, Paul. I forget sometimes that we here in the US don't have exclusive rights to brutal and tragic killings. My Mum and Dad are from Brighouse and Barnsley, respectively. They never really spoke of anything about any religion that they might have been exposed to in their youth, but later in life, Dad did join, with some fervency, the Episcopalian church here in America. It definitely changed him and I can't say that they were all positive changes. Keep up the great work. Cheers!
Episcopalian is Anglican/CofE which is most likely what would have been familiar to them growing up, though non conformism was popular in the industrial heartlands like West and South Yorkshire. Didn’t know there was any fervency in the Church of England to be honest, it’s more tea, cake and flower rotas. Very benign as religions go in modern times. I am shocked a CofE and Methodist minister were involved in this. Very bizarre.
Another interesting story, well read/spoken Paul, it makes you wonder was the guy genuinely possessed or suffered with underlying mental health issues, such a shame, and so sad to all involved, I hope his wife is at peace, and the dog too, and I hope their five children managed to find some peace and future happiness xxx 🤗😘💜
i want to be shocked at the year being 1974, but then i remember as a kid various stories that would surface in the rag-tag newspapers and you always hoped they were made up, then of course there was the barrage of novels and movies. At this young age i already had seen my share of what a decline in health and mental health could do to people and even then I wished for kindness and medical recovery for those effected. Thank-you for exposing all the person's involved in this tragedy. my hopes that the children were well taken care of.
Religious psychosis is one hell of a thing. So many cases like this where religious people kill while believing they are some religious figure evil or otherwise (or just lying about being a religious figure to try to escape consequences)
Not that this was the cause of the whole incident, but there is no way Marie could have sufficiently led any group of people let alone a religious group at the tender age of 21. People don't have enough life experience by that age (even in earlier decades where people seemingly "grew up quicker") to deal with any kind of problem that emerges in a group setting.
"Charismatic leaders" don't need any qualifications, other than the gullibility of their congregation. Not only was she leading the group, she was seducing the new members. It's called "root and recruit". It was only after they were called out for carrying on their affair that either of them started talking about "demons". It's probably just a coincidence that the "demon" targeted their exposer.
Poor Christine! What a brutal and painful way to die! It must have been horrible for her knowing that her own husband was murdering her. I wonder what happened to their 5 children. They lost a mother and a father that night. I'm sure it was impossible for the children to have a relationship with the man who killed their mother. :(
Those "exorcists" forgot too remove the 3 most dangerous ones, and were too tired too remove them, well then they are guilty aswel for doing the worst job ever, exorcism is not done by shoving a cross in a guys mouth. Great story thnx
the only way to get rid of sin is by visiting the roman catholic confessional box, pentacostal protestants think that they can whip GOD up like an instant cup off coffee
Question ; _(superstitious mythology Vs. medical science)_ How do you tell the difference between someone that is possessed by a demon, and someone who is also convinced of the same but is merely having a schizophrenic breakdown ?
If someone has several demons, you cannot let them go. They are a danger to themselves and others. If one is still there, several others will soon arrive to replace the others. They must be removed and the entryway shut through fasting, prayer and sealing it off forever. If you are performing the exorcism, you have to be spiritually strong and purify yourself first, before even attempting it. Also, you have to know exactly what to do.
Talk about getting away with torture and murder! He blamed his wife for her murder by saying she was possessed. Was the dog possessed? 🤦🏻♀️Christianity has never made a lot of sense to me. Not a dig, it just doesn’t. And the court catered to him. Lovely. 🙄 Nice one guys, Thank you. 🩵 I freakin’ love this channel!

Excellent point about the dog. The Old Testament has a lot to answer for in encouraging a mindset where humanity doesn't even consider the rights of our fellow creatures , but teaches us instead that animals were only created for the use of human beings.

Even from a Christian theological stand point , the devil doesn't "make " people do anything . The doctrine is that he is a tempter who exploits people's inherent weaknesses and proclivities . He does not remove people's free wiil and they are at liberty to choose the right path . The Satan of the Old Testament , from which the later figure of the devil evolved , is a tester of faith , as in the Book of Job and acts on God's direction . You cannot have a supreme god that allows a rogue angel to openly defy him and do what it likes . To posit an autonomous evil power with comparable or equal power to the good God is dualism , which is traditionally a heresy within both Judaism and Christianity .

Please don’t judge ALL religions on this one case. @@pocho689 it has no relevance? Are you honestly saying there is a religion that is not bullshit? Do please demonstrate that
Isn't it good that there are true Christians out there doing God's work and protecting us against those scary atheists who have no morals and who go around brutally killing people?
Love it! 😂
Oh yeah, those human-loving atheists like Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong. Right.
Praise those holy rollers!
Sir Paul, i appreciate all you do.
Howdy, from Texas.
Smith: the only demons left are violence, insanity and murder.
Vincent: 37 down and onky 3 to go. That's close enough. We will send him home for now.
Those are probably the only things he was ever really 'possessed' with. Oh, and infidelity.
Vincent should have been charged as an accessory.
Stories like this make me glad that I’m a secular humanist. Religion can be so destructive. Excellent presentation!
agree 100%
I refer to myself as a child of God
I don't do organized religion
Exactly, lunacy is the thing, not religion itself.
Murder would have been the first demon I exorcised but ig that's just me lol
Yep!
I must say Paul, you have the perfect appearance & voice for this sort of content.I always look forward to your well researched videos.Thank-you.👏👏👏👍
Well I never thought I'd have a penchant for this content, but I have thoroughly enjoyed what I have seen so far. So much so it is now a staple to my daily routine.
The exorcism should have been performed at Barking, because that is a good description of this disgusting affair.
I woke up this morning with the thought yay it's Friday a new video from Paul. Thank you so much
Thank you for another great episode. I would have been in my early 20s at the time but have no recollection of the case.
The evil that mankind does in the name of their deity. Belief has seen the death of millions.
My thoughts entirely. Also pretended belief,so you can blame your actions on "satanic/demonic/evil spirit possessions".
"An admirable evasion of whoremaster Man; to lay his goatish disposition to be charge of a star!" (Edmund, "King Lear, 1; 2).

“Thou, Nature, art my goddess. To thy laws my services are bound.”
Edmond makes such a beautiful and persuasive speech - but he doesn’t turn out to be such a fine fellow in the end.
I love ‘Lear’. I’ve captured so many passages in my mind, and they come up to my consciousness all the time.
“Nothing?? Nothing will come of nothing.”
“He hates him much that would upon this rack of life stretch him out longer.”
The misery, horror and wholesale slaughter religions have caused it this world is truly astounding. I ended this episode saying "And this is why I hate religion" instead of "Well, I never!"
Great story....great reading and channel!
Great video!
They did go in for those holy roller stuff in the 70s. We had a neighbor who attended one and claimed it healed his eyesight so he didn't need glasses but only for the drive home. 😂
it’s hard to keep a straight face when they say stupid stuff like that
@@boosqueezy2418 nothing beats a long time customer of mine who told me he put habenero juice in his eyes and then could see all the way to the Moon. Honest...a very interesting man. Had a lot of interesting stories...seemed well educated.

Great as always, thank you! ❤ from Wisconsin USA
Awful. It's so sad that he wasn't able to get treatment - for whatever reasons.
i love your videos they are very good thanks
Lock Michael in a room and have someone keep watch until we get the worst demons out? ❌
Let him go back home with his wife while still possessed by angry demons. Even though Jesus spoke to the girl to get rid of now? ✅
This story would seem less incredible in West Virginia rather than West Yorkshire.
Indeed.
Yowza... just wow.
Thanks as always.
Watching the exorcist had an odd effect on some people already open to the reality of such things. 1974 was the year the film opened in the UK.
Great storytelling❤
This story really did make me say well i never. . .😱
So they left him with Insanity, Murder, and Violence? Seriously?
Another interesting story, well read/spoken Paul, it makes you wonder was the guy genuinely possessed or suffered with underlying mental health issues, such a shame, and so sad to all involved, I hope his wife is at peace, and the dog too, and I hope their five children managed to find some peace and future happiness xxx 🤗😘💜
Was he genuinely possessed? No of course not, because there is no such thing!
Sir you are in my fondest thoughts day and night.
i want to be shocked at the year being 1974, but then i remember as a kid various stories that would surface in the rag-tag newspapers and you always hoped they were made up, then of course there was the barrage of novels and movies. At this young age i already had seen my share of what a decline in health and mental health could do to people and even then I wished for kindness and medical recovery for those effected. Thank-you for exposing all the person's involved in this tragedy. my hopes that the children were well taken care of.
The Exorcist movie was released in 1973. I don't think the date is coincidence.
Some lady can’t give anyone a “full Church absolution.”
Religious psychosis is one hell of a thing. So many cases like this where religious people kill while believing they are some religious figure evil or otherwise (or just lying about being a religious figure to try to escape consequences)
My partner met this man a few times. He was a nice man by all accounts until religion exacerbated his problems.
Religion is a belief in the unbelievable.
Thank you.
Wow. The officer’s quote at the end was powerful.
Iron age ignorance never solved anything
He could have been saved if he went to a psychiatric hospital instead of a church. Certainly, that would have saved his wife and dog.
The sheer insanity of religion
You know, they actually had film that didn't crackle in 1974??😇
So today is the anniversary of the ending of Daniel's first exorcism. And the murder, yeah? It's October 6th.
the only way to get rid of sin is by visiting the roman catholic confessional box, pentacostal protestants think that they can whip GOD up like an instant cup off coffee
Question ; _(superstitious mythology Vs. medical science)_
How do you tell the difference between someone that is possessed by a demon, and someone
who is also convinced of the same but is merely having a schizophrenic breakdown ?
I could understand this being believed in the 1770s but in the 1970s?!
Thanks Paul.
The irony that a Christian ad about the power of praying airs right in the middle of the exorcism segment is... Not the best timing on their part.
Since I gather that something bad happened to the dog, going to skip this one. Animal abuse is a serious trigger for me.
Humans are animals too but that would be ok?
Good afternoon Paul 😊
I lost my testimony watching this video.
Talk about getting away with torture and murder! He blamed his wife for her murder by saying she was possessed. Was the dog possessed? 🤦🏻♀️Christianity has never made a lot of sense to me. Not a dig, it just doesn’t. And the court catered to him. Lovely. 🙄
Nice one guys, Thank you. 🩵 I freakin’ love this channel!
The reason why Christianity doesn't make sense to you is because it is utter nonsense.
@@Tumbledweeb It is full of contradictions, which people inside seem to not notice, but genuinely spiritual people are very nice.
@@addie_is_me They do notice them, but they are dishonest and refuse to acknowledge them. If you were to point out contradictions in literally any other religious text but their own, they'd be all over themselves in agreement with you, but as soon as you do the same with theirs, nope!
I've even shown them verses from their own Bible but told them that it was from another religious text, and they are 100% agreeing with me. Then as soon as I reveal that I bullshitted them and where verses are really from? They start backtracking like fucking crazy.
Excellent point about the dog. The Old Testament has a lot to answer for in encouraging a mindset where humanity doesn't even consider the rights of our fellow creatures , but teaches us instead that animals were only created for the use of human beings.
@@lorrainedalgleish7616 The Old Testament doesn't even consider the rights of humans; Slavery is perfectly fine in the Old Testament. Including the sexual slavery of CHILDREN.
Absolutely insane
Why is it always the "mild mannered, well liked and quiet" types who turn decidedly stabby and killy?
_Just for once I'd like to hear, "Yeah,we always knew he was a wrongun with his horse sacrifices, his terrible habit of skinning small marsupials alive while listening to Bauhaus and his naked romping in the woods late at night with all the village strumpets!"._
Because that is what happens when people do not get the mental health help that they need, they go into psychotic episodes and do not know what they are doing. Those priests also need to receive mental health help - believing they can 'cure' mental illness with exorcism is beyond belief and criminal.
@@janetpendlebury6808
_Slow hand clap for your obvious inability to recognise a slightly humourous rhetorical question and your compulsion to believe that you have all of the answers to lifes ills... which of course raises the question of your own mental health and your obvious need for ameliorative help. People don’t want to acknowledge the abuse that is going on behind other people’s closed doors.
@@kellydalstok8900 People also don't want to acknowledge the abuse that goes on at the very top of society either, and THAT is out in the open & widely publicised.
Ipso facto: People are sh1t.
The same amount of desperation one feels apart from religion re-appears in religion, often enough.
I have seen this first hand.
In my opinion, it's very important that anyone who enters a faith system still attend to their psychological state, from a more secular perspective. This has been crucial for me in my faith.
1974! My birth year. 😊
Me too. Great year.
Man killed his wife and dog and was out in two years as I have always said if you take a life you get life no mater the excuses and there is no god so there is no satan

A terrible case that even change a lot of people's lives, including a police officer's beliefs.
Not the doggo :(
He wanted to get rid of his wife, that's all.
so much hate done in the name of God or religion…
Perhaps it's time to teach people to stop blaming fictional characters for their gross behavior?
Religion is the greatest work of fiction and the biggest evil.
That has got to be the Most horrafing and disturbing cases I've heard in a long time and if that is what Religion can do to you then I Must be very careful and the Blaim lays fairly with those Men who did the Exsoisum on that Poor Man who left Poor Michael's children Motherless and I hope that Religious groups like that will soon get banned as they destroyed not only a Man's life but also an entire family and I hope that Michael will soon be Reunited with his own Children
