I know this is old but you really helped me solve a lens dilemma (for now at least). I'm using the exact same combo of 24/35mm G Masters and like you I always want to use the 35. It's just a ridiculously beautiful lens. I don't end up wanting to switch to the 24 because it's wide-angle is not dramatic enough to outweigh the positives of the 35. So I'll give the 20mm a shot. I'll probably end up going on a hike, wishing I had that 24mm 1.4 as my one lens to do it all, and just regret the whole thing...
Hi Marc, great review. Quick question, I just bought the Sony A7IV and im trying to get a good bang for the buck portrait lens to pair with the Tamron 28-200 f2.8 - 5.6. zoom. Wondering what you would suggest? this 20mm or 35mm, 50mm? minimum 1.8 and as versatile as possible. not 85 or 135. Thanks for your feedback.
I definitely would not recommend this for portraits, it’s extremely wide. Can’t go wrong with a 35 or 50. I personally gravitate towards a 35. But that’s just me.
20f18g lens focus breathing (from the corrected Sony camera body) may be because the minimum focal length is very short, so the corrected angle of view is almost 24mm. It is a top mtf section with a slight disappointing depth expression and a slight crop, but satisfactory video shooting is possible
Hi! very nice review! What do you think about distortion in portraits compared to the 24mm GM? Can I get the same result by cropping a photo taken with the 20mm to reach 24 than taking it with the 24? Will there be any difference in perspective and distortion in the case of cropping?
There is definitely more distortion of the subject with the wider angle. You're not gonna get the same result as a 24 even if you crop in. There's definitely a wider angle look to the 20
Here's another reason to get this lens. If you're like me and also have both FF and crop, you can use it on your crop sensor camera as a great street lens at 30mm equiiv. It's small enough that it won't look or feel out of place on your 6000 series Sony.
I got a A7 Mk1 with no ibis and I already got FE 50 F1.8 so i want to lens with good autofocus? I thinking of getting FE 24mm F1.4 GM or FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM vs FE 20mm F1.8 and next year I want to travel to Japan? I am planning to get a new A7 camera in 2023. I like to take picture of airplane, Landscape, Astro, Street photography and travel?
Bought the 24mm GM and only found out about how good the 20mm G is afterwards. Probably would have gone for the 20 otherwise. Lots of people saying that chromatic aberration is worse on the 24mm, around the bokeh balls too. Oh well. She'll be right.
Re the movement inside... THANK YOU! I have bee really worried about this and you are the ONLY one I've seen mention it in a review! The only thing I don't quite like with this lens is if your tilted up for the stars, but with the ground still visible bottom third. Any houses, poles etc on the side of the frame look really bowed. I'm not sure if that's normal?
I appreciate your review. I own the 35mm 1.8 and sadly the CA is just too much for my environmental portraits. I am debating on getting this lens for environmental portraits. I own the Sony ZA 50 1.4 and the 85mm 1.8 so I hope this would be a good lens to give me some more variety to my portraits.
Can someone help me, I mainly shoot landscapes, im moving from an apsc to my first ever full frame (sony a7r ii) I have the 20mm 1.8 on order, but I’m contemplating whenever or not I should go for the 24mm which would be slightly better for portraits, how close could I get with the 20mm for portraiture before I see distortion? I’m mainly interested in landscape photography, but also portraiture from time to time, I can’t afford a variable zoom like a 16-35gm, is it safe to go with a 20mm for a all purpose lens? I’m not very experienced as you can tell 😅
You may get a very cheap ($70) and rather nice lens quality manual ttartisan 50 f2 e-mount as an occasional portrait lens - and the decide if you want to dig deeper.
I just got this and already had the 24 gm and 35gm . 20g ,24gm,35gm and Sigma 65mm f/2 . I know these are all pretty close . I plan on getting the Sigma 85 Art f/1.4 dg dn , Sony 135 gm and probably the Sony 14 f/1.8 gm. I’m a lens changing fool when shooting my live music photography. These will all be used on my a7siii and the 14-65 on a gimbal . I have a video productions company and we will use all these on Sony e mount fx cinema cameras. I’m a Nikon guy forever and plan on still shooting with Nikon but my productions company is going Sony fx . I’m diggin these Sony primes especially the G Masters . Damn they are good and light too . Peace
Man your video production skills are next level teach me your ways 😍
Lol stfu you're amazing and wayyyyyyy ahead of me compared to when I started. Love you bro

The constant struggle of someone trying to create. I feel you
Thank you for this video Marc. Keep pushing your great content and you will be on the way to the top no question about it!!

Would you recommend this for wedding over Tamron 17-28 or the new Sony 16-35 F4?
What you said about the 24 vs 35 really helped me to justify this lens! thanks and subb'd
Glad I could help!

@@MarcTaraz Ok Marc. Thanks!
Thank Marc for great quick review
Thank you for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed!
It does have a rubber gasket to seal it. It's just very thin. But you do have a great review.
Mines does too.

Thanks for the details review. I think I will get this lens recently. It has high quality and provides more different view with 20mm.
It definitely does! I'm really happy with how well this lens performs!

Great video man
Thank you! Greatly appreciate it!
Great lens, great review video. Well done.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful!

How does the 20mm on a a7R3 in crop mode? Is it comparable to the 24mm GM?

Is it equipped with image stabiliser and sensor cleaner?
What did you record this video with?
Shot on my a7riii! All my gear is linked in the description

Very useful 👍 thanks for sharing
Nice work!
Thank you so much!
What Nd fiter u used and what size
What do you recommend for a cinematic dance video with a compressions/ sharp background?
I'd say probably the 24mm or 35mm focal lengths
Marc Taraz Steiner thank you!
Can you use the 24mm gm for macro?
No you cannot
Now i know what kind of lens I want next 😂😂👌🏻
Those ultra wide angles hit different
Same. This lens looks like so much fun!
i have 35 1.8...when i shake its shaking something inside.so i thought it has broken.oh thanks a lot for acknowledging about that...

Does this work with Sony a6000
Yes! But it's a 30mm on the apsc bodies
Marc Taraz Steiner would that be goof for vlogging? And will I still get the bouquet quality even though it’s 30mm?
It would be too tight for vlogging on the a6000. If you want to vlog id look into the sigma 16mm
Marc Taraz Steiner ok. Is there a model in particular. Bc I want the 16mm wide look with good bouquet, and fast snappy auto focus
nice video. planning to sell my 24mm to get this lens. 😊
I think you're gonna love it!
don't do that! I much prefer the GM 24mm. It has such a unique look over this 20mm
@@IanSnape yeah bro...better for b roll shots...I like 24mm
@@IanSnape it has better colour rendition I think, slightly better bokeh.
My copy has a rubber seal on the back.
Same here. My copy did I should say, sold it after 2 weeks to go back to the 24GM.
Mine also has it
6:53 zoom -> tele
$900 lens and no weather sealing gas kit ... it’s a shame
It is sealed.
thats only 40mp camera you have thats like so 2018 get with the times ...
Peter McKinon rip off 🤣
