  • Just a few weeks back, Sony released their 20mm f1.8 G lens and MAN, I was excited to get this thing in my hand, and here it finally is. My name is David Zhou, and today I wanted to share my review of the Sony FE 20mm f1.8 G Lens. I want to talk about its build quality, share some images and videos shot with the lens, compare it to the Sony FE 24mm f1.4 G Master lens, and tell you whether or not I think you should buy it.

    I bought the 24 mm a little over a month ago and just got the 20 mm I pre-ordered last week and it’s lived on my camera perfect for my needs. I enjoyed the wider focal length and didn’t really miss the difference between the 1.4 and the 1.8. Now gonna be selling my 24 1.4 GM and keeping the 20!

    • @DavidZhou

      Definitely comes down to the FOV you want/need! They’re both great lenses, and you get a lil money back for selling the more expensive lens haha

      I’m with you. And for video, the 20mm is more like a 24mm when you add the crop factor for Focus Breathing comp and Active Stabilization. And thus essentially a 35mm in APS-C mode.

    1) Great Video David! Simple, Clear and message delivered. Like your tone and your pace. Well Done.
    2) I was comparing 24 and 20 for the last two weeks and I bought the 20 at the end. I always love to buy the top of the line lens from the brand. When I was with Canon, all L lens. Even though I am not a professional photographer nor I can't even know how to bring out the potential from every lens I bought, I believe that top of the line always give you the best result. However, this 20 is something special. As you said, built and design are the same. It has 95% GM performance but A LOL cheaper. I really like the wider angle this time.
    3) Another reason I moved from DSLR to mirroless because of the compact size and weight. I want my gear to be as light as possible and it maintains the quality. Sony camera and lens are doing good so far. Very happy with it.

    • @DavidZhou
      @DavidZhou  4 года назад +1

      Thanks! And yeah, I 100% vibe with that sentiment of loving buying the top end gear, but the 20 really is something incredible. Hope you’re enjoying that lightweight setup, it’s a great match!

    Hi! very nice review! What do you think about distortion in portraits compared to the 24mm GM? Can I get the same result by cropping a photo taken with the 20mm to reach 24 than taking it with the 24? Will there be any difference in perspective and distortion in the case of cropping? Thanks

    • @DavidZhou
      @DavidZhou  3 года назад +1

      I think the distortion control on both are about equal to each other, so if composition was identical (and you were further away on the 20mm) and you cropped, you should expect the same photo! Of course, this would be best done on higher MP sensors so you have more room to crop :)

    So now I am torn between the Tamron 17-28mm vs the Sony 20mm f/1.8. The reason for wanting the f/1.8 is not only do I shoot astro, but I like shooting day time wide portraits, however, AT A DISTANCE. Would shooting f/2.8 vs f/1.8 actually make a difference in subject separation if my subject was say, 20 feet away? I love to shoot "little person in a big landscape photos" Thank you, David

    • @DavidZhou
      @DavidZhou  4 года назад +1

      Hey! At 20ft, there will likely be no difference in background separation, both backgrounds will be quite in focus. I find 0-4 feet distance with the 20mm will yield a shallow DOF, but any farther it all really comes into focus.
      I think the 1.8 could help w/ Astro, but since I’m not super into that field, I can’t give the best suggestion. Likely the tamron will offer more versatility w/ the zoom, but idk about the image quality! I can say for certain the 20mm is very sharp!

    Hi! You make very nice and useful videos!... Here in my country I can buy a used sony 20mm 1.8 at the same price as a new sigma 16 mm 1.4. I currently own an a6400 and I can't decide between these two... Which one would you buy if they cost the same? Thank you!!!

    • @DavidZhou
      @DavidZhou  3 года назад +1

      If you ever plan on switching to full frame, definitely get the 20mm f/1.8! It's SUCH a good lens! But, if you plan on staying on APS-C for a while (1+ years) AND you want a wider focal length, then get the Sigma 16 f/1.4. As much as I LOVE the Sony 20mm f/1.8, it's no use if the focal length is wrong for what you want to capture.

    What camera would be good for recording my exercise videos ???? 24-70mm g master ?

    • @DavidZhou
      @DavidZhou  3 года назад +1

      24-70mm GM would be the most versatile in a gym and outdoors. The f/2.8 will allow enough light in and the zoom range gives you options to "mix up your look" by cutting between wide angle shots and close-up shots.

    As an enthusiast price is very important to me. The Sigmas you listed (thanks for doing this) are between 50% to 80% cheaper than these very expensive Sony lenses. Sigma image quality is so phenomenal that I would really like you to show the Sigma lenses in comparison to the two Sony lenses you shared with us today. Thanks, again, and I appreciate the listing of the Sigma lenses here.

    • @DavidZhou
      @DavidZhou  4 года назад

      I love the Sigma lenses but they are APS-C lenses, so if you plan on shooting full-frame, that's the only time they won't suffice. Sigma's FF lenses are pretty expensive too, but you're right though = a Sony a6600 + Sigma lenses can really produce some great footage!

    • @DavidZhou
      @DavidZhou  4 года назад +2

      Ooh that's a very good question, well personally, if you can get a $1400 lens for $900, do that. Aside from the technical reasons: 1) it's not as wide so it's easier to use it for a LOT of shots (vs. using a super wide for a ton of shots, it can be limiting) and 2) it's still a better lens optically. But ALSO, it's going to have better re-sale value AND you need 2 Sony FF cameras and 2 Sony GM lenses to get into their Pro Support program, which if you plan on becoming a professional videographer, I recommend checking out :)

      The talking-head portion of this video was shot on the a6600 and the 20mm G, for videos, I think they perform phenomenally together! It'll give you a 30mm FF equiv. focal length which I think is a solid field of view and it's very sharp and has great contrast :)

    • @DavidZhou
      @DavidZhou  4 года назад

      That'll be tough! Personally, I can't because I wouldn't utilize both as much as I'd like, because in most situations, either would do. But, if you have use cases for both, I'd definitely say so. For example, I love the 20mm for videos for RUclips BUT the 24mm is much more useful for my client work (as the field-of-view isn't wide enough to be noticed as "wide"). For now, I'm just keeping the 24mm since I have an irrational desire to collect all of the GM lenses :)

  • @Crutch456

    Just for astrophotography alone, I'll stay with the 24GM. To not have the corners sharp defeats the purpose. If I have to crop to cut that out, 20mm is out the window. Of all my pictures, the edges are the same as the center, everytime. Nice review though.
