Part 3: Alexandra of Mecklenburg-Schwerin's Tiara

  • A robbery, an arrest, another arrest, Soviet prison, and the threat of nuclear war. No big deal, right?
This is final installment of the story of Alexandra of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and her Fabergé tiara. When we last left Alix and her family near the end of World War II, they had fled Mecklenburg for Schloss Glücksburg, near the Danish border.
But there was someone else at Glücksburg - someone the Allies wanted to get their hands on at any cost. Alix and her family got caught up in the manhunt for a famous Nazi, while her second son ran into trouble trying to safeguard their home, Schloss Ludwigslust, which was about to be occupied by the Red Army.
The final years of Alix's life were as full of drama as the early years we've already covered. The good news? Although it's a little hard to track what happened to this tiara during the war years, we know exactly where it ended up...and it's a happy ending for tiara lovers like us.

ABOUT THE GIRL IN THE TIARA
    ----------------------------------------------------
I tell stories about tiaras and the fascinating royal women who wore them. Join me as I follow these tiaras across generations and countries, through wars and revolutions and-sometimes-into darkness and disappearance and destruction.
This isn't the kind of history your professor lectured about. Instead, think of this as conversational history, like a mash-up of Drunk History and The Crown. Yes, there's a little swearing. There's also humor and heart and a boatload of compassion for these amazing royal women.
    ABOUT ME
    -------------------
I never intended to start a channel or a website about tiaras and royal history. But a midlife crisis forced me to re-examine my life. I gave up fiction writing after self-publishing 9 of the 10 books I'd written and earning next to nothing.
Instead of the misery of marketing books, I turned to my first love...royal history. So here I am, a 40-something burnout, trying to start over by recapturing her love of history, royal women, and their jewels.

I absolutely loved this series. I know a little bit about past English royalty but not too much about other European royalty. I loved learning about Alex and her family. It is hard though to keep track of who married who especially when alot of them have such large families with even longer names! Lol. You do such an awesome job of narrating, your voice is so calm and soothing! I'm looking forward to more videos!!! Hugs from Wilmington NC!

You're so welcome - thank *you* for watching! I'm so glad Alix had a happy ending to her story, too. I always get a little nervous when I start researching in case terrible things happen to the lady I'm working on, but in this case, all's well that ends well. 💜

Thank you for a lovely biography of Alexandra of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. I am glad that she received the best gift in the end. Her son was returned to her and the family. No matter what your station in life, what matters most is your family. She was a
very strong woman and had such fortitude in surviving two world wars. I am so very happy that she had her family with her in the end. Thanks for making such interesting programs about such outstanding women.

What a story, thank you. It makes you realise that sometimes you have no choice on what side you end up on in times of war.
She was very honest in identifying her jewels . In a way it’s not the cost of the jewellery , it’s the heritage that they represent. Sad. Thank you, been looking forward to this 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

I wonder do you ever inform the families, that your plan is to write an article and present a video that over 5.5 000 people will be watching in the first month!
I ask because in this case there are living members of the family you discuss who may have been happy to assist and contribute... After all your a serious historian with an ability to keep things light and interesting... This 3 part series has been the best ever.

As my username may give away, I live in Sønderborg, very close to the German border and basically just across the water from Glücksburg and the naval academy in Flensburg. I’ve never heard the stories about Speer hiding there before, the broken caskets and missing jewelry, thank you for that information.

    • @TheGirlintheTiara
      @TheGirlintheTiara  3 года назад +4

You're very welcome - thanks for watching! I had no idea any of that had happened, either. I stumbled onto the Speer connection and couldn't believe what I was seeing. There are more files in the British archives regarding the looting of Schloss Glücksburg. I submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to try and view them, but it was rejected since some people who were there are still alive. There may be more to the story that comes out later. We'll have to wait and see.

@@TheGirlintheTiara It’s no surprise that the German nobility had close connections to the nazis. But yes, as long as there’s living relatives, we’ll most likely never know the full story. At Sønderborg Castle we have a crypt, where some members of the Glücksborg family are buried along with our former dukes, duchesses and some members of the royal family too. But since there’s still living relatives - our queen is one of them - it’s closed to the public.

Why are you so sympathetic to a bunch of Nazis? This family could have simply left for Denmark and spent the Nazi years there. When the Nazis invaded Denmark, they could have gone to England, where they had close relatives in the royal family. Instead, they served the Nazis, and at least one of them was an officer in the infamous S.S. What crimes against humanity did he commit? This family betrayed their heritage.
Whatever happened to this S.S.-member son of “Alix" when testified at the Nuremberg trials? What was the nature of his testimony? Who was his superior officer on whose behalf he testified?

I like your content, research and delivery. But, I'm searching through your videos and I can't find a single featured royal that isn't white. There were Korean royals, many varieties of African royals, Hawaiian royals and so many more. I admit that in some cases it might be more difficult to find information and photos about themselves and their jewels. But, would it not be worth it? Genuine opulence cannot exist in the absence of diversity.
